Product Description
Focusing on the design of microwave circuits and components, this valuable reference offers professionals and students an introduction to the fundamental concepts necessary for real world design. The author successfully introduces Maxwell's equations, wave propagation, network analysis, and design principles as applied to modern microwave engineering. A considerable amount of material in this book is related to the design of specific microwave circuits and components, for both practical and motivational value. It also presents the analysis and logic behind these designs so that the reader can see and understand the process of applying the fundamental concepts to arrive at useful results.
The derivations are well laid out and the majority of each chapter's formulas are displayed in a nice tabular format every few pages. This Third Edition offers expanded coverage with new material on: Noise; Nonlinear effects; RF MEMs; transistor power amplifiers; FET mixers; oscillator phase noise; transistor oscillators and frequency multiplier. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but heavy on the math
Overall, I found Pozar's book to be a good handbook on pracical applications of microwave engineering. However, as one who has not been a design engineer in years, the long drawn out mathematical proofs of the theories behind the applications made for a sometimes tedious read. This would have been a great text for me right out of college, but in my current position I don't need to understand the theory to the depth that Pozar often goes into. The purists and hardcore design guys might say I've devolved into a mathematical whimp, but for my needs I like overviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I actually had the one written by Ludwig as my RF textbook, which as clearly written as it is, lacks more detail in couplers. So I bought this renowned one and it is worth its reputation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Microwave Engineering
This textbook was specified for a graduate level oourse in microwave engineering, it is very useful and covers the material in good detail. I found some solutions to problems on the authors website which have helped in understanding the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice book
Although, I have not read this book all of the way through, it looks like a really great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reference for Microwave Engineering
As a working engineer with high power RF for nearly 20 years, I found David Pozar's book to be one of the best references to microwave engineering that is available. There are many professional books available which cover the same topics, but they lack a sufficient mathematical electricity & magnetism explanation in comparison. One of the things I found is that I had to refresh myself on the math, which is a good thing, in order to complete the problems at end of every chapter.I recently met a microwave communications engineer who had a class taught by David Pozar and he said it was difficult since Pozar is demanding, but enjoyed the class.Well, this attitude is reflected in this book by treating most topics very quantitatively.

I would highly recommend Microwave Engineering to all mobile communications, RF, radar systems and electronic warfare engineers. And of course to all graduate electrical engineering students.

With this book, I also recommend as a complement RF Design Guide: Systems, Circuits, and Equations

The only negative I can say is about cost, but there are several used sources available and for this type of reference the new cost can be justified if you work in this field.

Product Description
This comprehensive revision of a popular text helps non-electrical engineering majors--the future users, rather than the designers of electrical devices, systems, and machines--gain a conceptual understanding of electrical engineering.Early coverage of systems and an emphasis on an IC (integrated circuits) "building block" approach motivates non-majors. The text features integration of analog and digital technology with cutting-edge coverage of op-amps, feedback and analog systems. A section on SPICE, the leading computer-aided circuit analysis software, introduces students to computerized analysis of circuits. Chapter-end Applications capture student interest by relating material to contemporary topics such as automobile suspension systems, high-fidelity audio, and hand-held computers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars awful and awesome
This book is awful because it is very hard to read when you are first exposed to electrical engineering field. It's even worst when you are a freshman does not have the patience to peruse the book. Too much material, nothing interesting... basically you are just flipping V=IR around for the whole course (really boring.) It will discourage students studying electrical engineering as it did for me.

Fast forward, 7 years later when you have forgotten everything about EE or something like current flow through a diode; it's an excellent book to look up for that. The book is really really easy to read after you have taken other upper and graduate EE classes or design real circuits. It's a light easy book to read to refresh some FUNDAMENTAL concepts.... but then that is defeating the purpose of an "INTRODUCTION" book. Look at other books like Allan R. Hambley or arts of electronics (this is more pratical) as alternative books.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is certainly not "An Introduction"
If you are a novice EE student, never buy this book. This is not an introduction in the sense we usually think. In a word, terrible!

1-0 out of 5 stars Most Horrible Textbook Ever
I used this book in my sophomore year Intro to EE class and it has to be the most horribly written technical textbook ever. I read from the book only once the whole semester and spent the rest of the time learning from tutors and lecture notes. The examples are cryptic and poorly explained and the chapters are haphazardly organized. I pity those who're forced to buy this for their EE classes, but if you have a choice, you can definitely find yourself a much better textbook than this piece of junk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Something is missing
I'm a retired EE and having other textbooks in my library on this subject I would conclude that this is not an easy book to follow, certainly not as an introduction to second year engineering students. For example, the write up on higher-order circuits is just too superficial and left too large a gap to follow up into the examples or homework in my opinion. This treatment of subject areas seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This book is not incomplete and has many classical examples but it's just difficult to follow. There are better books. Its probably best to have other references in hand such as Schaum's, Charles M. Close, Ralph J. Smith, Johnson/Hilburn/Johnson and a good set of class notes to fill in between the gaps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow, ...
This book is to hard to follow, with bad examples and explaining things so you can't tell what is going on. I hate this book. My advice to you is if you are taking a class that is using this book, get another book to use because this book is worthless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifies the complex and highlights the important
I have many texts on RF Engineering and quite a few on wireless networks. This has become the first port of call for understanding Antennae and propogation in this physically treacherous environment. Many real life designs rely on multi-path propogation to ensure access points and other such devices work. This is not often clear in the documentation however. This book will help you solve this thorny problem in your network and show you how to battle reflections effectively. It has the right amount of mathematics to make some predictions reasonably possible.A far cry from the norm in this rapidly evolving field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wireless without the hype
Dan Dobkin has managed to encompass in this book information that most people would take 15 to 20 years to learn. This book is useful not only for engineers researching wireless networks but also for theengineer/student that needs to understand the fundamentals of all aspects of radio systems.
This really is a reference book to keep on the shelf !
The section on Antennas is particularly informative and should be read by all involved with the RF medium.
Great work !

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless designers!
A must have for any wireless designer. The author's ability to clearly explain fundamental RF concepts makes this a perfect book for any student of radio. His real world examples, also makes this an indispensable tool for the accomplished professional. The pictures and graphs are extremely insightful and clearly illustrate the points that the author is trying to make.

The author's ability to break down complex technical concepts makes this a great book but the practical insights, into the real-world constraints of both indoor and outdoor networks, makes this book a must have for the engineering professional.I have not found one resource like this that covers so many practical issues faced by wireless designers today. For people designing and installing WiFi networks, this book provides a single resource for the propagation characteristics of common building materials. Carefully researched and clearly explained this is undoubtedly the best book I have found on modern day wireless and 802.11 networks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, inellectual and entertaining
Dan Dobkin has accomplished something close to impossible: an extremely useful, intelligent and entertaining book on Wireless Networks. This book is a must for wireless network designers or those just interested in how they operate.

The book is filled with extremely useful technical information on wireless networks and all of the building blocks. His real world network application examples compliment the detailed technical derivations.Dobkin writes this book as if he is telling a story without the stuffiness of typical technical books. The Illustrations are very well thought out and help to get the complex ideas across to the reader.Dobkin adds interesting historical facts and comical quips to the detailed technical discussions to make the journey through this book interesting and rewarding. He manages to convey a sense of enthusiasm for technology throughout the text.

Very few authors manage to write such useful technical books without putting the reader to sleep.Dan Dobkin is one of the few to have accomplished this feat.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to his next creation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book around for applied wireless networking
Probably the best book on the market for anyone affiliated with designing and/or deploying wireless networks. The book is very well written. Every curiousity of RF can be found in this book. The illustrations are great and the book is full of real world networking examples.Anyone planning on designing or operating a wireless network should have this book nearby. ... Product Description
Over the course of a little less than twenty years, inventor Frank J. Sprague (1857-1934) achieved an astonishing series of technological breakthroughs—from pioneering work in self-governing motors to developing the first full-scale operational electric railway system—all while commercializing his inventions and promoting them (and himself as their inventor) to financial backers and the public. In Engineering Invention, Frederick Dalzell tells Sprague's story, setting it against the backdrop of one of the most dynamic periods in the history of technology. In a burst of innovation during these years, Sprague and his contemporaries—Thomas Edison, Nicolas Tesla, Elmer Sperry, George Westinghouse, and others—transformed the technologies of electricity and reshaped modern life.

After working briefly for Edison, Sprague started the Sprague Electric Railway and Motor Company; designed and built an electric railroad system for Richmond, Virginia; sold his company to Edison and went into the field of electric elevators; almost accidentally discovered a multiple-control system that could equip electric train systems for mass transit; started a third company to commercialize this; then sold this company to Edison and retired (temporarily). Throughout his career, Dalzell tells us, Sprague framed technology as invention, cast himself as hero, and staged his technologies as dramas. He toiled against the odds, scraped together resources to found companies, bet those companies on technical feats—and pulled it off, multiple times.

The idea of the "heroic inventor" is not, of course, the only way to frame the history of technology. Nevertheless, as Dalzell shows, Sprague, Edison, and others crafted the role consciously and actively, using it to generate vital impetus behind the process of innovation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This is a list of words with a translation
If your looking for a book with just a simple translation this is it.For example, "boolean" is provided with a dozen different types (e.g. boolean algebra). "Boot" is given 2 possibilites "manguito aislador" and "cubierta aislante"; when to one or the other? and are these related to "boot your computer"?
No definitions or pronounciations anywhere in this EE word translator; definitely not a dictionary (i.e. no definitions).
It does have many 2 or more word translation; "tuned line"phrase provided: "linea sintonizada". Can't find that in any English to Spanish Dictionary but what does it mean and how to pronounce it is not provided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers what is promised.
It delivers exactly what it says, electrical and computer engineering terms. Its approach is straightforward, but rather technical. Most any imaginable term in these fields is here, but there is not a sufficient emphasis on the elementary terms in computers. However, most of the omitted terms are of such a general nature that these can be easily found elsewhere. This dictionary is for those whose do serious research or translations. There are other dictionaries for the more general terminology.

Product Description
Captivate your students - and entice new students to the electrical engineering major - with Roman Kuc's illuminating look at how commonplace information systems, like infra-red auto-focus cameras, compact disc systems, bar codes, credit and smart cards work, and how clever engineering solutions are used to solve technical problems.Designed for readers with no science background, the book introduces them to the thought processes used by electrical engineers to think quantitatively and then design useful systems. As a result, readers not only learn the facts behind information and transmission, coding and storage, but how these systems came to be developed in response to a shift of information to a digital medium.Unlike traditional science texts that begin with theory and then illustrate that theory with applications, this book starts with practical, real-world systems and then presents the physical theory and mathematical analysis required to understand their operation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars EE lite
Despite the authorship of a Yalie, this textbook serves as an excellent introduction to the wonderful world of electical engineering for the liberal arts student. It is mostly useless for those already familiar withthe basic concepts behind signals and systems.Nevertheless, the majorityof the population that is unfamiliar with the world of EE could definitelybenefit from this text.I personally found very easy to understand, almostchildish, but that is because it served as the text for a much hardercourse at Princeton. The reason the course at Yale which this book wasmade for is so popular is because it is a complete gut class.Although Iam inclined to write this book off, the unfortunate lack of tech-savvyamong much of the populace necessitates this book.It should provide acure for most who read it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Less practice
You can learn a lot of mathematics in this book but nothing about MATLAB. There is no good practice in this book.
A hint for the author. Try to make a CD-ROM with all examples on it. So everyone can get familiar with MATLAB and the surface. Best would be to double or triple the number of examples. (good examples in MATLAB Code)
Rethink it and I will be the first who buys the improved edition of this book otherwise you only have to change the title in :Advanced Engineering Mathematics pictures by MATLAB.
Thanks for reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized approach
The book organizes several complex topics in a very intuitive and logical manner, which makes it a good reference book for engineering students. A detailed section on statistics would have been helpful. ... Read more

Product Description
This market-leading textbook continues its standard of excellence and innovation built on the solid pedagogical foundation that instructors expect from Adel S. Sedra and Kenneth C. Smith. All material in the sixth edition of Microelectronic Circuits is thoroughly updated to reflect changes in technology--CMOS technology in particular. These technological changes have shaped the book's organization and topical coverage, making it the most current resource available for teaching tomorrow's engineers how to analyze and design electronic circuits.

Features:

* Streamlined organization. Short, modular chapters can be rearranged to suit any class organization. Topics that can be skipped on a first reading, while the student is grasping the basics, or that look ahead to advanced industrial applications, are clearly marked.
* Digital Integrated Circuits covered in a new, separate section, to make it easier to teach Computer Engineering students.
* Parallel Treatment of MOSFETs and BJTs. 90% of the market works with MOSFETs, so this vital topic is placed first in the textbook. The chapters on BJTs and MOSFETs are exactly parallel, so instructors can teach whichever one first that they prefer, and speed through the second topic by concentrating only on the differences between the two transistors.
* Frequency response in a separate chapter. Frequency response is now condensed into a single chapter, rather than being integrated within other topics.

New to this Edition:

* Digital Circuits Early and Modular: New chapters in Part III: Digital Integrated Circuits make it easier to teach digital topics to computer engineers in a single-semester course.
* New Chapter 13: CMOS Digital Logic Circuits lays the foundation for all digital material.
* Frequency response in a separate chapter: Frequency response is now condensed into a single chapter (Ch. 9), rather than being integrated within other topics.
* Streamlined and Signposted: Shorter, more modular chapters are easier to customize to any class. Visual cues and icons make the book easier to navigate. Explanations to the reader of why to read sections-and how multiple techniques might be used-are much more prominent. A new icon clearly marks topics that can be skipped on a first reading, while the student is grasping the basics, or that look ahead to advanced industrial applications.
* Semiconductor primer in a separate chapter: For students who have not taken a prior course in Semiconductor Device Physics, Chapter 3 concisely covers the basics necessary to study Microelectronics. (Students who have had a device physics course will also find this a handy refresher.)
* Lab-on-a-Disc: Offers complete simulations with activities, investigations, and directions to students for examples in the chapters and study problems from the ends of chapters. Simulated in MultisimTM and PSpice®. Also includes full student versions of MultisimTM and PSpice® so students can simulate their own activities and designs.
* New Technical Coverage, including: a unique development of cascoding techniques (Ch 7); modern techniques for the design of BJT op amps (Ch 12); and deep submicron design and technology scaling (Ch 13).Please see the Preface for a complete list of the exciting new additions.

Ancillaries:

2-0 out of 5 stars This was REALLY late
This was REALLY LATE. I ordered it on a Friday, and it took 32 days from then until I got it. NOT good. It was a textbook for a class, so I had to make do without a textbook for half of the class. The book itself is fine, it just took forever to get here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful if an expert
As a student this book is at times hard to understand and follow. It gives general explanations and then suddenly throws hard practice equations at you some of the times. However, if you have learned this topic already and is looking for a reference book, this would be a good choice as it has the necessary information to refresh you on the topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This book is well written, a little big for the content it has, I think it could have been shrunken by a few pages. It covers a great amount of information and it includes several pieces of software that aid in simulating your circuits! I think that's quite good. The only downside I find is the price, deamn. If you can get this book for cheaper do it, its not a bad book, I have definitely bought worse. The only reason im deducting a star is because of the price, other than that, the book is great, very intuitive and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, kinda expensive though
Its a great book for the classroom. The book does well to explain most concepts and it comes with NI-Multisim.For those of you who never used or heard of multisim, its a circuitry simulator that allows circuits to be built virtually and be simulated and analyzed. The only draw back is the price-tag.Decently hefty, but it is a 1200 page book with an never-ending student version licence of multisim
