Product Description
This book gives freshman engineering students a solid foundation for all their future coursework. It provides an overview to the engineering profession and of the skills they will need to develop, as well as an introduction to fundamental engineering topics such as thermodynamics, rate processes, and Newton's laws. An important aspect of the book's approach is the method of Engineering Accounting, which casts the basic conservation laws (e.g., of energy or mass) as simple "accounting" procedures. This is a unifying concept that facilitates problem-solving across all engineering disciplines. ... Read more

Product Description
The fourth edition of The Mechanical Design Process combines a practical overview of the design process with case material and real-life engineering insights. Ullman's work as an innovative designer comes through consistently, and has made this book a favorite with readers.

This book conveys the "flavor" of design, addressing both traditional engineering topics as well as real-world issues like creative thinking, synthesis of ideas, visualization, teamwork, sense of customer needs and product success factors, and the financial aspects of design alternatives, in a practical and motivating manner.New in this edition are examples from industry and over twenty online templates that help students prepare complete and consistent assignments while learnign the material.

This text is appropriate primarily for the Senior Design course taken by mechanical engineering students, though it can also be used in design courses offered earlier in the curriculum. Working engineers also find it to be a readable, practical overview of the modern design process. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The 'standard' for mechanical engineering design texts
A nice overview of the engineering design process. What is really nice is that the author includes a few examples per chapter--many design texts do not take this extra step.

One really good aspect of the text is that the topics flow well for a Capstone Design class.Even QFD is explained in detail without getting too bogged down with the different uses it could have.Though, the author did not explain exactly *how* to use QFD in the design process, there was plenty of detail for a good introduction.

It would be helpful to have problem assignments, to make the text more like a classroom text. But again, most design texts have difficulty taking this approach.

The irony with my review:I was a grad student when Ullman's 1st and 2nd editions were out, and I saw many omissions I would have liked to have filled (particularly on DFM and QFD).Now, as the capstone design professor at a small university, I see how difficult it can be to lay out a textbook on this topic (because I have tried!). The author did a fine job of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Design Fundamentals - Explained Clearly
This text has fast become a favorite at our company; reminding our engineers of some of the key fundamentals of the machine design process. As designers of advanced machine design software technologies, Dr. Ullman's book has inspired the team resulting in valuable brainstorm sessions and innovations. All have found this text to be a great and engergizing read.

I highly recommend this text and am glad that my son will have the opportunity of using it in his mechanical engineering studies at college.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of paper
The paper used for this book would be better used as toilet paper. It is a collection of general observations and data fron old projects that was out of date when it was written. Any designer with a couple years experience could have written a better book in their sleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed book for Mechanical Design Process
Ullman provides an easy to understand text on an extremely detailed subject matter. I used it in a sophomore design class to get an overview of the mechanical design process and will use it again for senior capstone design. The text starts off using techniques/tools we're already familiar with and segways into more detailed and specific methods of concept development. The bicycle example does a great job of showing a designer's thought process and is a good inclusion to the book. Also, it helps that Ullman knows how to get to the point.

However, some of the charts are difficult to grasp, and the material on cost and marketing are a bit dull. Although, that's probably due to the subject and not the author. ... Read more

Product Description
Plesha, Gray, and Costanzo’s Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics presents the fundamental concepts, clearly,in a modern context using applications and pedagogical devices that connect with today’s students.

The text features a five-part problem-solving methodology that is consistently used throughout all example problems. This methodology helps students lay out the steps necessary to correct problem-formulation and explains the steps needed to arrive at correct and realistic solutions. Once students have fully mastered the basic concepts, they are taught appropriate use of modern computational tools where applicable.

Further reinforcing the text's modern emphasis, the authors have brought engineering design considerations into selected problems where appropriate. This sensitizes students to the fact that engineering problems do not have a single answer and many different routes lead to a correct solution.

The first new mainstream text in engineering mechanics in nearly twenty years, Plesha, Gray, and Costanzo’s Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics will help your students learn this important material efficiently and effectively. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ug Statics
I am guessing you are buying this book because it is cheaper then the school bookstore, soo...The cool thing about this book is the thermometer a long side each problem to help you scale whether you are doing ok in the subject or should get help. It's a generic statics book, gives examples and definitions. For me the difficult part was bridging the gap between the examples and the more difficult problems, but this is with any statics book. Good first edition but wished my teachers waited for the second edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
I agree with Ryan Siefring, who reviewed this book:

It's a great overview of all elements in a mechanical design and the calculations necessary to make sure those elements do not fail under load.
The book is written in a way that makes it easy to use. Just the right blend of explanation, calculation, and Graphs are used to provide the user with an excellent resource for many years of engineering work. I would add that the book is very illustrative having plenty of figures and tables.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
The book was listed as new and did arrive quickly wrapped in plastic. However the corners of the book were bent significantly at one end, significantly reducing its resale value.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good for reference tables in the back...just xerox.
I bought it for my class and ended up only using it for the index tables in the back. If your teacher asks you to buy it for a thermodynamics class, unless your teacher xeroxes the reference tables for the substances in the back, which mine did end up doing, you're kind of stuck with this book, if only for those index tables (which you will most likely need for homework).

As for the actual book, and reading it...no. I didn't bother. One, it's not a textbook that easily facilitates the learning of Thermodynamics, and two, you waste time you should spend doing thermodynamics problems by reading the TEXT.

For my class we ended up going by our teacher's lectures and the practice we got from homework to learn the material. Aside from the reference tables in the back, the book didn't help. This would be a legitimately good purchase if it was only the reference tables, otherwise, have fun not using or needing 4/5 of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory text
This is a good introductory text, covering both very theoretical derivations and many practical problems related to real world performance of thermodynamic devices (ICs, VCCs, etc).It provides a reasonably sized group of tables for many common gases and refrigerants as an appendix, in both English and Metric units.Having taken a course from the author using the book, I can say that it presents the material in a way well suited for a 1st and 2nd level thermodynamics course. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enough to enlighten, enough to want another book!
Frankly, I have expected a little more of this book... It is fairly thin. But after reading through it, it really shows concepts and side remarks on many mechanical parts.

Majorly, it is filled with really fundamental parts, like basic gears and pulleys. It is something that I do not consider worth of buying. But, there are also parts and mechanical solutions to various problems that really are genius. Described are parts of old steam engines, various couplings and clutches, clockwork parts, and some oddities. Also, there are few mechanical marvels described for which alone the book would pay itself out.

All put together, for just a few $$ I got a book that gave me some useful ideas and solutions for my projects. On the other hand, Now I am planning of buying bigger book... Maybee I should have done just that in the beginning :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
Exactly what I was looking for. Enough detail to allow me to implement the movements.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book
I agree with a lot of what has been written, it is small print, with small photographs that were quite obviously taken a long time ago, however the lines are crisp and clean - possibly digitally retouched - and the print isn't as small as some novels that I have read. It is completely readable, and the diagrams are very easy to understand. Granted, I have had a small background in reading design templates for theatre and one architecture class so I know, in a general sense, what different circles and gear shapes are supposed to mean. This book is not designed for the absolute beginner at mechanics, but then again it isn't meant to be. It also isn't designed for the expert, because an expert should already know this stuff. This is an advanced beginner or beginning intermediate level book, expanding on what you already know, without being overly complicated.
Also, the designs just look cool. Great coffee table book, and gave me a few ideas for simplifying things around the house too. A good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars 507...But you may need a dictionary?
A broken down version of almost any link or leverage device known in simplistic forum of the time.
Only, you may need a College Dictionary to get the Full Flavor of the info discribed. Some words vage.
Found it very usefull and not too complicated for those who need a 'booster shot' of designs
and how to integrate them.I'd recomend this version to anybody looking for that sometimes
needed way to finish an unfinished invention that needs help.Very Satisfied!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book; mediocre printing
The copyright on the original book is, of course, expired, so several publishers have printings available. This one uses what seems like pretty cheap paper; more significantly, the pages are printed at an unusually small size - I have to believe it's been reduced from the original. The text is on the border of what my 40-year-old eyes can make out. Some of the figures appear to have some handwritten marks on them.

So, all in all, this printing feels like a photocopy, with some size reduction. The content is wonderful, and I've already learned a lot from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
i received the book in the shortest amount of days possible right in time for the big test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Established Thermo text is also most up to date
In the new 7th edition I saw for the first time an equation of state explicit for density.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental text !
As Chemical Engineering demands from you three Thermodynamics , this book is for you . I do not remember any other book so well written and with so clear explanation about the fugacity concepts for instance . The solved problems about the first and second law of Thermodynamics are extraordinary .
After you are engaged with this text you will forget your teacher without missing him .

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Ok, so i am a chemical engineering student, and this is supposed to be the textbook. Which allegedly would later on make it a forced reference for a student. However, the only useful information is the steam tables, because the properties and other things are insufficient, trust me, the book has sitted on my shelf unused for a year and a half. I have not sold it because no one here would buy it. The explanations are poor. If you want to know about thermodynamics, this is really not your book, I would rather recommend a Fisicochemistry book.

As for properties tables and the such, well, the information you are really going to use is all summed up in the Chemical Engineer's Handbook, which is a must for any ChE, even if you're just a student (believe me, it has saved me a lot of times).

2-0 out of 5 stars Old, outdated classic cant compete with modern thermo books!
Although the book is totally introductory, it does *not* serve well to teach you something. Contents, concepts, structure, didactics, writing style and layout are more than obsolete: this text is the worst US-textbook on thermo ever (engineering thermo/chemical thermo/chemical engineering thermo), believe me! If you do not share my opinion, then it must be due to your absolute ignorance regarding this field or your pretended incompetence. This book is neither worth buying, owning, working with, nor looking at. Do not waste your time with this superficial and totally introductory, conveying-nothing text. The reason why this has been a best-seller from the late 1940's to the late 1980's (four decades!) is its age: it has been the *very* first, (c)1949, and thus, the most well-known, popular book on chem eng thermo. 'The eldest' is always being respected the most ("a classic"), but this does not mean that a best-selling classic is the best. Forget this outdated title of the (outdated?) McGraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series and profit from the new fresh look and uptodate, modern approach taken by competitive book series (Wiley, Prentice Hall, Wiley-Interscience, and...McGraw-Hill ;). Smith's 6th edition book is an incredibly poor monograph! And by the way, it is rather a treatment of Engineering Thermodynamics than a treatment of Chemical (Engineering) Thermodynamics!! Since this obsolete classic cannot compete with the new titles, I give a 2-stars rating only. 50 years ago, Smith was the de facto standard intro text (and it remains an "Introducation" throughout the 800 pages!), now this has changed.
Please also read my pos reviews of thermo books by Stanley I. Sandler 1999 (for advanced learners), Noel de Nevers 2002 (for beginners), and Stanley M. Walas 1985 (for workers). For a complete listing of relevant thermo titles have a look at table 8-1, pages 8.2-8.4, in Poling/Prausnitz/O'Connell 5th ed. c2001. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A frequently misunderstood technology, die casting is considered the shortest route between raw material and near net shape. For many decades, high pressure die casting was viewed as an art based upon "seat of the pant" strategies. However, many of these crude reactions actually worked because the fundamental process is quite forgiving of eccentricities. Exploring these reactions with scientific logic, Die Casting Engineering presents a broad study of each procedure in the die casting process and clearly outlines its basic science and principles.

This guide is written in a reader-friendly and logical format by an experienced authority in quality and productivity enhancement, tooling design, metal feed system analysis, temperature management, and environmental regulation. While its scope is broad and covers the many facets of die casting, the book's main focus is on function, problem identification and solution, and strategic logic. Generously illustrated, it provides a comprehensive explanation of why high pressure die casting is reliable, predictable, and teachable. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This textbook fits courses on mechanical behavior of materials in mechanical engineering and materials science and includes numerous examples and problems. It emphasizes quantitative problem solving. This text differs from others because the treatment of plasticity emphasizes the interrelationship of the flow, effective strain, and effective stress and their use in conjunction with yield criteria to solve problems. The treatment of defects is new, as is the analysis of particulate composites. Schmid's law is generalized for complex stress states. Its use with strains allows for prediction of R-values for textures. Of note is the treatment of lattice rotations related to deformation textures. The chapter on fracture mechanics includes coverage of Gurney's approach. Among the highlights in this new edition are the treatment of the effects of texture on properties and microstructure in Chapter 7, a new chapter (12) on discontinuous and inhomogeneous deformation, and the treatment of foams in Chapter 21. ... Product Description

Featuring a non-calculus approach, this introduction to applied mechanics book combines a straightforward, readable foundation in underlying physics principles with a consistent method of problem solving. It presents the physics principles in small elementary steps; keeps the mathematics at a reasonable level; provides an abundance of worked examples; and features problems that are as practical as possible without becoming too involved with many extraneous details. This edition features 7% more problems, an enhanced layout and design and a logical, disciplined approach that gives readers a sound background in core statics and dynamics competencies.  The volume addresses forces, vectors, and resultants, moments and couples, equilibrium, structures and members, three-dimensional equilibrium, friction, centroids and center of gravity, moment of inertia, kinematics, kinetics, work, energy, and power and impulse and momentum.  For those interested in an introduction to applied mechanics.

Still have not received the product nor a conformation that the item was shipped. Tried to contact seller and no response. I don't suggest you buy anything from this seller.

1-0 out of 5 stars so many errors whats the point
This book is so full of errors and missing information that it is difficult to know if what you are doing is correct.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, good examples & HW problems
This text explains basic elements of applied mechanics and then gives good detailed examples. There are plenty of good homework problems at the end of each chapter. Some of them are harder than others, but enough information is given in each chapter to solve them. It is very easy to read and a good first book on applied mechanics.

2-0 out of 5 stars FULL OF ERRORS
This has to be one of the worst text book i've used in all of my semester of schooling. The examples are poor and not related to the questions. There are multiple incorrect answers in the back of the book. Be carefull.
