4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
This is a very nice book with a ton of history.I only wish it had more on how to get there and what to expect.Guess I'll need to augment with another book...

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best for Colorado Rockies ghosts

If there's a better book on the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado, I don't know about it. Eberhart's book is massive (almost 500 pages), detailed, and informative. It covers all the mountainous regions of the state where gold was mined by sections; all the towns/camps in each section are listed and described (many in great detail), and fairly precise sketch maps locating all the sites are included. The book also contains many excellent photographs. This is the 4th edition, last updated in 1969; a new edition would be worth consideringsince much of what is described as being visible to the visitor at many sites may no longer be there (thanks to fires, severe weather, vandalism, etc.); a lot can change in 35 years. But in terms of locating ghost towns and camps and learning what they were all about, this book can't be beat. It's an excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's really good!
I really like this book. It's got neat pictures and easy to read format.I highly recommend it. Buy this book NOW! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory survey to various technologies
The book serves its purpose of providing a introduction to the various technologies that make up data mining. There are three main topic sections. The first gives an overview of the technologies involved such as fuzzy logic, bayesian probability, and neural networks. The second topic area is more concentrated and focuses on how data mining works. This involves utilizing clustering, association, and classification of data. The final section covers advanced topics in web, spatial, and temporal mining. The only complaint that I would have is that most of the coverage at least in section one is cursory and one needs other reference books for serious work in the field.A very strong feature of the book is that pseudocode algorithms are offered in many sections.

5-0 out of 5 stars clarity in exposition
Dunham gives a clear explanation of the main ideas in data mining. It's a concise book, directed towards the researcher or programmer. Space considerations meant that some topics are only briefly but succinctly covered, like fuzzy logic.

More details are provided about neural networks, genetic algorithms and similarity measures. Bayesian classifications also get a good mention. Other classification measures involve distance-based methods to define clusters. For clustering, you should note that exactly what goes into a given cluster can be rather subjective. It could depend on your choice of metric.

There is a fair amount of maths. Accessible to someone with a couple of years of university level maths, especially involving linear algebra.

The section on Web mining is especially interesting. The Web is probably the largest database in the world. Certainly the most accessible. But with different characteristics from many other databases. Web data might be wrong, deliberately or otherwise. And some websites might be link farms, that try to pump up page rankings. Other databases simply don't have this concern about their contents. Dunham explains Google's PageRank and a competing idea from IBM.

The algorithms are given in pseudocode. Which should not be a problem to an experienced programmer. Translating these into your choice of language is (or at least it should be) a lesser conceptual task than understanding the methods themselves. Or devising new methods. The book also aids the latter. Dunham's descriptions of the overall logic behind each algorithm is a good lead into what is needed in construction new ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for those interested in Data Mining, Machine Learn
Currently I am taking a Machine Learning course. This book is really helpful and intuitive. My friends who are studying Bioinformatics also found it useful.

All algorithms are presented in pseudo-code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mining Group Gold is a Mandatory Book for Sales Professionals
Mining Group Gold is a Mandatory Book for Sales Professionals. It was my privilege to know and work with Tom Kayser at Xerox during the time he wrote the first edition of his book, Mining Group Gold. I encourage every sales manager to buy this 3rd Edition for your team. The principles in Mining Group Gold helped me close multi-milliondollar deals faster and more efficiently. In every step of the salescycle there are a gazillion meetings: uncovering requirements, presentations, demonstrations, customer engagement, negotiating T&C's,and closing-the-deal meetings. Following contract signatures are implementation, account management, problem resolution meetings. The Mining Group Gold principles guided my daily approach to meetings whether facilitating a room full of people, a conference call between Russia and Israel, or meeting someone over coffee at Starbucks. One memorable Fortune 100 company implementation kickoff was held in Oregon where a half dozen of us met with 20 senior technical engineering managers, program directors, and executive management. This two hour meeting was calculated to cost just under $7,000.00. At the beginning of the meeting, aside from stating desired mutual outcomes, setting an agenda, designating roles, I set expectations by asking each person to introduce themselves, their role, and what they needed from this meeting to get their job done. I explicitly encouraged everyone to talk, meet, and contact each other. At the end of the session after summarizing what's been discussed with assigned ownership and timeframes to the task, I asked each person in the room to comment on next steps. The results of this collaborative conversation exceeded my expectations. The group brought up critical timing schedules with design, test, prototypes, potential technical glitches. We talked about work travel, holiday schedules, potential conflicts, needed approvals, and much more. Nothing was too trivial to discuss. Within a year, a successful launch of a new medical device was introduced to the market. The elements of Mining Group Gold work;and they work well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mining Group Gold - Third Addition
What an outstanding update to one of the most effective books I have ever read and used in my 35 years in the business world. I found this book about five years ago. I work in a large corporate environment, and for many years I attended meetings that were not very effective and therefore, without much meaning. It was very seldom that we ever had a meeting that did much more than set a date for the next meeting. Since I started using the Mining Group Gold format, we have accomplished so much more, in much less time than I thought was possible. Not only have I made this format part of two very successful divisions I have been blessed to champion, but it has now been rolled out through-out the organization. For anyone who has struggled having an effective meeting at any company level, I strongly recommend Mining Group Gold. It has been extremely effective in helping align our entire company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless and always relevant information
I have been in several leadership roles throughout the years, and never have I come across something as simple and effective as Mining Group Gold.So many organizations struggle and even fail because they are made up of a group of people acting as individuals - not as a team.

One of the biggest frustrations I have come across in my career is ineffective meetings. We have meetings to plan meetings, meetings to re-cap meetings, and meetings just for the sake of meeting. It can be very easy to overlook the amount of time and money that is wasted on meetings that either never needed to happen or should have been conducted in an entirely different manner.Kayser lays out six critical questions to ask yourself when planning for a group meeting, and I have found that by going through this exercise I have saved significant time and money, as well as learned how to more effectively communicate with my team.

I feel that by reading this book, I am now a much better leader and have a better relationship with my staff.Everyone on my team knows that their opinion counts, and I am better able to assess the strengths of my team members and assign them tasks appropriately. No matter what stage you are in your career, Mining Group Gold will make you a better teammate, leader, and organization as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Most from Your Team - Get the Most from Your Meetings
Repetitive, non-productive meetings.Preaching meetings.Time wasting meetings.I know you've been there, just as I'd been there over many years. This book changed all that forever, for me as well as for my organization.

Mr. Kayser lays out an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and, best of all, easy to implement format for the reader to put into practice and turn her or his meetings into fruitful sessions of information sharing, of discussion whenever appropriate, of meaningful idea sharing and of satisfying accomplishment.Best of all, it works - in any "meeting", no matter the size, and no matter if it's business, if it's communuity, or if it's personal.

Some time ago, I read "Mining Group Gold".Skeptical at first, I was nonetheless intrigued by Mr. Kayser's processes that claim to turn meetings that are so often sessions of "reading the mail" or "preaching" into sessions of valuable insight instead. I, along with another individual, had a meeting with 60 people scheduled within a week after I completed the book. With this other individual, I dicussed a new approach - the MGG approach - to our meeting. It was a whiole new world for us, and we weren't entirely confident, but Mr. Kayser encourages the reader to just try the processes explained in the book.He advises that the 1st time may not be smooth & perfect, but it will be better than he would have otherwise had.So we literally ripped up the "agenda" we had, and started new, using templates and principles from "Mining Group Gold".The impact was powerful.During wrap up, meeting participants over & over exclaimed that they'd never been in such a productive meeting, or they never thought we would accomplish what we stated as our "desred outcome" at the start of the meeting, or that "it was the best meeting ever attended".

Read the book and benefit from Mr. Kayser's wealth of experience.Learn how to decide if you even need a meeting.Learn how to get the most "gold nuggets" out of the meeting participants - the willing as well as the not-so-willing. Learn how to assure "buy-in" to your group's ideas and plans of action.

I've been in business for over 30 years. No book has ever had as positive an impact on my business life as has "Mining Group Gold". Trust and practice the "Mining group Gold" fundamentals. You'll be glad you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a Beleiver!
At the suggestion of a co-worker I read Mining Group Gold and honestly, my first impression was the content was a basic rehash of a well-worn process. In fact, I questioned if MGG could deliver on its promises - to increase productivity of meetings and elevate the collaboration of meetings attendees.

After assisting with the development of a meeting, and subsequent attending meetings organized and managed using MGG I have become a believer. Since that time, I have attending many meetings - some following the MGG process and some not using the MGG process. The MGG process delivers everytime!I've also organized webinar type meetings using MGG and found that MGG works well for these meetings too!

The MGG process forces me as a meeting organizer to think through the "flow" and be well prepared for all challenges. As an attendee, the MGG meeting agenda provides a detailed "snapshot" of the who, what, when, where and why of the meeting and ensures I'm attend well prepared to participate.

Obviously, I'm a believer, and if you follow Kayser's teachings I'm positive you'll become one too!

4-0 out of 5 stars A strange vision of an important subject
Privacy is very important for any data manipulation and data mining gives the feeling to the large public to have the power to discover very private things in data. And it's true.
The authors try to find some methods to do data mining in avoiding of having access to the private part (too much private part) of these data but in staying able to learn something about individuals behind. It's not easy and very interesting to learn.
Of course the applications are limited because very often data mining has for purpose to score a particular individual.

I purchased this book for a class. It is very informative. The way they explain things can be annoying at times. There are lots of references in the middle of paragraphs that are unecessary. There are also many times where they say "go to this book to find out about this subject". It's good if you actually want to go look for other books, but annoying if you are just reading this one. The graphs and pictures are very helpful. Overall this book explains the concepts well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction
This book is an excellent introduction to data mining, concentrating primarily on decision tree induction. The material provided is presented clearly with no assumption of prior knowledge on the part of the reader. Product Description
"Geostatistics is the application of the formalism of random functions to the reconnaissance and estimation of natural phenomena."

With this definition, G. Matheron introduced the term geostatistics in 1962 to describe a scientific approach to evaluation problems in geology and mining, from ore reserve estimation to grade control. This approach provides, in application, a coherent and efficient set of techniques enabling the geologist, mining engineer or metallurgist to use available information and obtain more accurate estimates.

First published in 1978, this book was the first complete reference work on the subject of mining geostatistics, an attempt to synthesize the practical experience gained by researchers from the Centre de Morphologie Mathematique in France and by mining engineers and geologists all over the world who contributed their ideas. It was designed for students and engineers who wished to apply geostatistics to practical problems occurring in the lifetime of a mine and for this reason was built around typical problems, progressing from the simplest to the most complicated: structural analysis, guiding exploration, estimation of in situ resources and recoverable reserves, numerical models of deposits, simulation of mining and homogenization processes, ore grade control in production. The techniques developed are illustrated by a large number of case studies and, as an aid to the reader, each chapter begins with a summary of the contents and there is a guide to the notation used. ... I have a look at it inside this book, and I saw thats cover an wide geostatistics subject.

Its Great!Mining Geostatistics

3-0 out of 5 stars The previous reviewer is getting boring
As I search for texts for learning geostatistics, this gentleman's standard rant appears everywhere, copied verbatim, as welcome as a stubborn pop-up ad. He seldom discusses the specifics of the book in question, rather, he just dismisses the whole field. Well as long as we're at that level, I'd remind him Kurt Godel showed that it is impossible using usual methods to be certain that the axioms of arithmetic will not lead to contradictions. So I guess we should can anything based on arithmetic. I wonder if he also haunts the theology book review pages touting the lack of empircal proof for god's existence? It would be better to post one's intellectual grudges elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Geostatistics: perpetual motion indata acquisition
Professor D G Krige was working at the Witwatersrand gold reef complex in South Africa in the early 1950s when he discovered that two or more gold assays, determined in samples selected at positions with different coordinates in a finite sample space, give an infinite set of distance-weighted average gold grades. Professor Dr G Matheron was so pleased with Krige's convenient method to augment sparse data in large sample spaces that he himself conferred on Krige the honorific "krige" eponym.Krige, Matheron and scores of nascent geostatisticians did not know in those innovative days that every distance-weighted average has its own variance simply because one-to-one correspondence between weighted averages and variances is inviolable in mathematical statistics. On the contrary, statistically dysfunctional geostatistians decided to replace the true variance of the SINGLE distance-weighted average with the pseudo kriging variance of a SET of degrees-of-freedom and variance-deprived functionally dependent kriged estimates. It makes no scientific sense whatsoever to assume spatial dependence, interpolate by kriging, smooth pseudo kriging variances, and rig the rules of mathematical statistics. In time, nobody may remember when and why the distance-weighted average became a kriged estimate. And who said what's in a name?

Product Description
It is now possible to predict the future when it comes to crime. In Data Mining and Predictive Analysis, Dr. Colleen McCue describes not only the possibilities for data mining to assist law enforcement professionals, but also provides real-world examples showing how data mining has identified crime trends, anticipated community hot-spots, and refined resource deployment decisions. In this book Dr. McCue describes her use of "off the shelf" software to graphically depict crime trends and to predict where future crimes are likely to occur. Armed with this data, law enforcement executives can develop "risk-based deployment strategies," that allow them to make informed and cost-efficient staffing decisions based on the likelihood of specific criminal activity.

Knowledge of advanced statistics is not a prerequisite for using Data Mining and Predictive Analysis. The book is a starting point for those thinking about using data mining in a law enforcement setting. It provides terminology, concepts, practical application of these concepts, and examples to highlight specific techniques and approaches in crime and intelligence analysis, which law enforcement and intelligence professionals can tailor to their own unique situation and responsibilities.

* Serves as a valuable reference tool for both the student and the law enforcement professional
* Contains practical information used in real-life law enforcement situations

Great book that covers numerous elements of the topic. It goes beyong just an academia understanding of the topic that is often too isolated from reality of crime(inability to understand operations by the law enforcement & its impact on the greater crime trends). Rather it focuses on an underlining issue of merging analysis & operations. The book is easy to read & is subdivided in a well progressive fashion. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedia for Precious Metals Investors
This is much more than a geology book. The text has great info on evaluating mining management teams, drill results, and investment potential. Although I work in the financial industry,I found the book easy to read, yet with sufficient detail to convey essential material to help us tailor our precious metals investment portfolios.

The first half of the book covers prospecting, drill results, processing ore, building a mine, and environmental issues. The remainder is dedicated to evaluating mining operators, the business of mining, feasibility studies and the metals market investing strategies.

The book is filled with interesting pictures, diagrams, and charts.I searched far and wide and have not been able to find a text with similar breath and factual content. Even after the first reading many years ago I continue to refer back to it while researching new investment choices for my clients. I have given many copies away over the years and certainly will continue this tradition with the new updated 10th edition.5 STARS

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong on Statistics, Weaker on Data Mining
This book is part of a Data Mining three bookseries. The first book is the strongest of the three, and should be considered first. My advice on this book is that if you 1) have a dozen or more related books, and 2) you have already worked on at least one or two data mining projects, you should buy this book. It has enough good material to add it to your collection. If you are new to data mining you should look elsewhere.

The other two books are: Discovering Knowledge in Data: An Introduction to Data Mining and Data Mining the Web: Uncovering Patterns in Web Content, Structure, and Usage.

Methods and Models can be divided into three parts. The first part is a very strong 200 page review of traditional statistical techniques, specifically PCA/Factor Analysis, Multiple Regression, and Logistic Regression. These techniques absolutely belong in the Data Miners toolkit, but on most projects won't be as important as Decision Trees (covered in the first book). However, these are classical techniques, and the typical reader may have a lot of training or/and books on this material already. Having said that, this material is extremely well written. So if you are looking for a great review of these techniques you can do much worse. If you are looking for a discussion of how the application of these techniques to data mining differs from their application to statistics, you will be disappointed.

The second part of the book is the most helpful to me. It comprises of one chapter on Bayesian Networks and another on Genetic Algorithms. As always, the writing is clear, and to owners of SPSS Clementine 12.0, this section is of special interest because Bayesian Networks have just been added to Clementine. Methods and Models pre-dates the release of Clem 12.0, so it does not refer to it.

The third part of the book is a 50 page case study using the CRISP-DM methodology. This is a welcome addition, but is flawed in its execution. There are moments of brilliance: an application of over-balancing, a voting model, and tables showing several variations of models with their accuracies. Then ... the inevitable appearance in this book series of linear transformations and factor analysis as precursors to techniques that either do them automatically in Clementine, or are unneeded altogether. The veteran will know when to ignore this book, and when to pay attention- the novice might not.

In short, you should consider the first book, or both as a pair to add to a veteran data miner's collection. Only the rare reader should buy this book alone, and never as their first and only data mining book. ... Read more

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn about old mining towns and what you can find when you visited them. I have a much better understanding of what to look for when I see old structures and now I might even be able to figure out what they once were! Great book and a fun read!

I have used this book with great success in my Colorado history classes and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in mining history and the Rocky Mountain West.Other books tell you where the "ghost towns" are located, but this book is unique in helping you understand what you are seeing when you get there.Their chapter on tin can dating alone is worth the price of the book. The research here is incredible and the photographs very clear.Take this along on your next trip into the mountains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is a fabulous book which should appeal to anyone who spends any time in the back-country of the American West. You know those tumble-down buildings and random bits of rusted iron you occasionally encounter? Turnsout they're not the junky nuisance you thought. This book, which is afascinating read, will enable you to appreciate how folks 100 years agowere living in the very places you're exploring by showing you what allthose things were used for. A wonderful find (or gift) for anyone with aninterest in the mountains. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Finding Fee Mine Sites
This book is supposed to be a comprehensive listing of fee mining sites in the western states. It isn't. This book misses many important sites, gives minimal information and in some cases is plain out of date. Disappointing in a book that claims to be up to date. I found more and better information on the internet. While some of the information in the appedicies were interesting it was not enought to justify the cost of this book. If you really want to find all the fee dig sites in the states concerned you would be better of searching with you favourite search engine or reading Rock & Gem Magazine. I do not recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stinks??//
You can get better information from the internet and the book misses so much of what is available for fee mining...... P=wood, agates ( all kinds), t-eggs, jasper, opal, etc!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fee Mining and Rockhounding Adventures in the West
I really enjoyed reading this book. It has turned out to be a great reference for our trip through Utah, Wyoming and Colorado which we are planning for next Fall.

We are going to be camping in our RV and we have planned a route that will take us from our home in New Mexico through the Eastern region of Utah to Idaho and Montana and then to Wyoming and Colorado. This book has really assisted us in deciding where we want to stop and search for gems, minerals and fossils.

I would recommend this book for anyone who may be interested in finding great places to rock hound!

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be named "museum guide"
Some useful digging sites, but more information about museums, caves, fairs, etc. There are better books out there for the serious rockhound.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Much Detail
I liked the state histories but for a rockhound the book is not of much use. The book tries to cover too many states with too little actual information on each state. A good example would be Arizona. The book lists 14 sites for Arizona but only 4 are listed as diggings. Of that 4 only 2 are actual rockhound sites and the other 2 are fee panning at a tour. The other 10 of the 14 are Museums, caves, points of interest, and fairs and festivals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is exactly what I expected it to be, a book full of pictures and stories about mining camps and general life in the "old west". It is rife with information on nearly every aspect of gold camp life, from the diggings and miners to the prostitutes and leisure activities. The book itself is of good quality and looks like it will endure years of thumbing and re-reads. If you are at all interested in the old west gold camps I'd highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description

Temporal data mining deals with the harvesting of useful information from temporal data. New initiatives in health care and business organizations have increased the importance of temporal information in data today.

From basic data mining concepts to state-of-the-art advances, Temporal Data Mining covers the theory of this subject as well as its application in a variety of fields. It discusses the incorporation of temporality in databases as well as temporal data representation, similarity computation, data classification, clustering, pattern discovery, and prediction. The book also explores the use of temporal data mining in medicine and biomedical informatics, business and industrial applications, web usage mining, and spatiotemporal data mining.

Along with various state-of-the-art algorithms, each chapter includes detailed references and short descriptions of relevant algorithms and techniques described in other references. In the appendices, the author explains how data mining fits the overall goal of an organization and how these data can be interpreted for the purpose of characterizing a population. She also provides programs written in the Java language that implement some of the algorithms presented in the first chapter. Check out the author's blog at http://theophanomitsa.wordpress.com/

5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of references
The book is a survey of remarkable breadth, listing hundreds of sources among its chapters' bibliographies. (50-100 items per chapter, majority of them from conference proceedings). Evidently, this kind of volume does not let the author discuss any particular paper or topic in detail; at best, a reference is covered with a short paragraph. This does create a problem: the book's value is exhausted once the reader looks up the topic of interest, and moves on to the suggested references. "Temporal data mining" could do with a little more editing - Chapman and Hall ain't Springer - but I am pretty impressed with it the way it is, a competent and wide-ranging introduction to an interesting topic. ... Product Description
Long out of print, this highly praised classic study of western mining is now available with three new chapters by Elliott West. When originally published in 1963, Professor Paul’s book offered the first comprehensive view of western mining as an integral part of the settlement process. In his supplemental chapters, Professor West presents a sweeping social history of mining camps—encompassing discussions of gender, class, race, labor, and the environment. The combined scholarship of Paul and West makes a strong case for the transforming effects of the mining frontier on western society in particular and American society in general. The American Historical Review praised the original edition as “a fresh, penetrating approach.” This revised, expanded edition continues to offer a distinctively vivid voice and an unusually keen eye for telling detail. ...
