Product Description
This special commemorative edition is a reprint of the classic volume originally published in 1967 by W. H. Freeman and Company. It honors the memory of a truly great scientist, petroleum geologist, and teacher.

For many years, this book was unparalleled as a resource for working petroleum geologists as well as students.

Even with the 33 volumes of AAPG's Treatise of Petroleum Geology, Levorsen's single volume of more than 700 pages remains a very useful reference.

With more than 50,000 copies published since the first edition was released in 1954, Geology of Petroleum remains one of the most widely read geology books of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Petroleum Fluid Book Review
Everything is great. Shipping is fast. Book is brand new although it was not wrapped in plastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal
Great deal on the book! I was able to save a lot of money with this purchase. It was exactly the book I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This is a very good reference to have at hand.I am a petrophysicist and reading this book has allowed me to do a number of my computation much more accurately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for fundamental petroleum calculations
I am using the second edition to help with my understanding of viscosity, permeability, compressibility, PV diagrams and other calculations.

The book is titled "An introduction".However, the detail in the book is at an intermediate level. You need to have at least some basic scientific and mathematical knowledge to make the best of this book.As an example, it is clearly a level above Dr Hyne's Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology.

The book does not go into great background detail and is more focused on calculations and examples of how they are derived and applied. If this is what you want this book for (as it was for me), it does a great job.

It has an exemplary index that is very useful in finding exactly what you are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is definitely a very important book to have for people that study/work in the Petroleum industry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Petroleum Engineering Handbook
The Petroleum Engineering Handbook is an excellent general introduction to the engineering associated with oil and gas exploration and development, gathering together in one place most of the basic engineering issues, challenges and resolutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars yes, it is big...but it fills the need as well.
without opening it, you would think that the secrets of the world were contained therein. as a reference tool, it is invaluable - it is comprehensive. everything from oil cracking to storage to...whatever. its in there!

i borrowed my professor's copy for a couple of weeks and everytime i had to lug the thing around (in my backpack), i felt i'd tip over by its weight. its strictly a DESK reference book.

for the curious: the book is a well written and easily understandable book with plenty of value to the petro-engineer or theresuch.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a big book
It looks big from a distance but when you get close you can really get into the 4 dimensional size of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boy is it THICK!!
I found this book to be VERY thick. It's thickness increased the further one got into it. I expected a less thick book but was astonished at it's actual thickness. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
When I read the abstract for this book I thougth I would pick up some information or process description that would help pick out the most economical scheme to process a given feedstock. Instead what I got was mostly a rehash of what I can get from Hydrocarbon processing without any hard numbers or equations to use. The author spends most of the time describing databases of process inoformation he has collected and how he went about correlating the results, but without ever bothering to print the correlations that were developed. Instead you get tables comparing the authors correlations to other correlations which also are not published. This does nothing to help you know how to predict the performance of a unit. ... Product Description
This breakthrough new book may help save countless lives and avoid enormous losses. It presents a methodology for using gas migration to predict earthquakes and explosive gas buildup.Using rigorous scientific investigation and documented worldwide case histories, this remarkable book presents compelling evidence showing that changes in gas rates, composition, and migration accompany the tectronic events preceding earthquakes and their associated seismic events, such as volcanoes and tsunamis.Because these gas parameters are detectable and measurable, they provide an early warning of seismic activity.

Gas Migration is the first book to accumulate, analyze and apply the interdisciplinaryknowledge on gas migration and detail its connection to tectronic, seismic, and geologic phenomena. It combines geological, geochemical, geophysical, seismological, and petroleum engineering insights to demonstrate how gas migration and its associated phenomena can be used in earthquake and environmental geohazard identification and prediction.Topics include-

· Tectonics and Earthquakes
· Gas Migration at Plate Boundaries
· Surface Soil-Gas Surveys
· Faults and Petroleum Reservoirs
· Earthquake Precursors
· Whispering Gases
· Paths and Mechanics of Gas Migration
· Subsidence, Gas Migration, and Seismic Activity
· And much more

With this information, environmental specialists, civil engineers, petroleum geologists, seismologists, and urban planners now have a new and powerful conceptual basis and tool for understanding and perhaps even predicting gas explosions and earthquakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting potential
A fascinating book about a topic that not too many years ago was regarded akin to snake oil. At one point, all that was known about this subject was anecdotal. And since events like earthquakes occur irregularly, it was hard for researchers to systematically study this phenomenon.

But thanks to the authors, a large body of evidence has been collected into this text. It spans the fields of geology and seismology. The hope is that by methodically studying the gaseous outdiffusion from the earth, reliable precursors can be found. Even if these give only a few minutes warning, that is enough for critical power supplies to come online, lifts to unload, and other precautions.

The ever increasing cheapness of sensors and the increasing coverage of wireless networks means that the suggestions in the book might be adopted by dispersing a wide array of wireless sensors at earthquake prone regions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sub-Par Book to LEARN from
Used this textbook for a graduate course in 2009. That said, it's INCREDIBLY outdated. While very comprehensive and full of useful information, from a learning perspective, it's not very good. Examples are one of the major problems with this book. There are no labels for units during many of the example calculations and mysterious conversions pop up fairly regularly. The layout is frustrating as well, as many of the images, diagrams, charts referenced aren't on the same page as the written descriptions. You're better of buying a more up to date book. There's tons of them so you can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
This is an excellent book for it covers most of the aspects of drilling engineering. However, in some sense it is becoming outdated; it needs additional chapters on Novell Drilling techniques (Horizontal &Underbalanced drilling, Coiled tubing Drilling, MWD) chapter on drillingmuds should go more in depth, one example of preparing drilling program andsmall completion chapter would be a definite assett for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars great reference
I have been able to pick up technical calculations and great drilling information that would have taken several years ofhands on experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference source for drilling engineering
This book provides a very detailed reference source for most aspects of drilling engineering. It covers everything from bit design to hydraulics to derived burst, collapse and tension equations for casing design. Diagramsand pictures are well presented and helpful in explaining some of thesubject matter. The only thing that is lacking is a chapter on drillingoptimization. ... Read more

It's a okay book. i completed a course in refining and had this book. If you don't understand how different units work or new to the business this book would be a good place to start. easy explanation of process and useful diagrams.

I have a BA degree in International Studies and an MBA in Finance. I have been in market and competitor analysis with energy consulting firms and operating companies for 28 years.

I have relied on this book every step of the way.

Do not expect to get a detailed understanding of how refining works. If that is what you are seerking, you're not in the right place (hint: read the title!). What this spelndid little book does is give a business person enough background to understand the various processes, both individually and as part of the flow from crude oil to, for example gasoline. How good is this book? Well, it has been in continuous publication for some 20 years.
