4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the background
This book is very good to understand the background of Taguchi's approach. He has an interesting view on the different roles of engineers during the design cycle. The concept of Quality Loss is striking.
It is not good for learning. The examples shown may be difficult to follow for a beginner. I suggest to read real case studies from the US, from Europe or from Japan in parallel. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
This book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:

Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.

Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.

Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.

How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book, up-to-date
I borrowed this book from library and have read a lot of it. I am a system/SW engineer with more than 10 year experience in every phases of SW engineering. Although now I am focusing on the areas of SW PM, I found I needed know more about to how to improve the quality of SW with lower cost. I read several recommended books and found this one perhaps is the best one which fit the condition of mine.

This book is very sysmatic, not only in the way of organizing the contents, but in the perspective of writing the book, so that you can get a lot of valuable information no matter you are a programmer, tester, PM, or QA. By reading the book, you can feel the solid theory backgrounds of the authors, which add readable features not difficulties. The best practices are also illustrated, and some of them are thoroughly discussed(such as code review). The up-to-date issues are well selected and I think most of the new technology trends and methodologies are included in this book so you can save much time to read more other books.

I am surprised to see there is no comment on this book yet, so I put my view here hoping it can give some help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pressing the Lean Advantage
Womack and Jones in 'Lean Thinking' state that each manufacturing organization consists of: An ordering system, A production System, and a Distribution system.
Womack and Jones go on to say, as part of a Lean Action Plan:" as soon as you have flow and pull...in the production System...it is time to go to work on the... Ordering System... pipeline to spur sales and increase market share." In other words - press the advantage.
Clausing's 'Total Quality Development' is about pressing the advantage that lean transformation provides to the organization.
Clausing defines 'total quality development' as "the modern way of developing new prducts that will be competitive in the global economy" and goes on to say 'Total Quality Development' "combines the best management, strategy, and teamwork resulting in greatly reduced new product development time, a reduction in new product development costs, and increased product variety that together result in increased customer satisfaction".
Fine - you say, but what exactly is 'Total Quality Development'?
It is the integration of concurrent engineering, quality function deployment (QFD), and Taguchi's quality engineering into a total product development process.
Clausing's stated objective in writing this book is "to transform product development to achieve competitiveness in the global economy"
This book takes my breath away. If you are asking yourself what is next after installing flow and pull for your product family this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Normal Capability
This is the end all / be all to capability analysis.I don't care what the other reviewers have written. This book addresses every type of capability type analysis in detail.Normal, Non-Normal, Attribute, etc. The author addresses various capability indices.Every chapter has multiple pages that have specific examples that demonstrate clearly these capability examples for various manufacturing(mainly) and non-manufacturing industries. I use this text to base my teaching / workshop classes on and it is great!

The prerequisite is that you have some SPC background, real world, why else would you read this!

This should be on every process / quality / design / product engineer's library!

Thanks Mr. Bothe!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook for SPC Practitioner

Product Description

Lean production, has long been regarded as critical to business success in many industries. Over the last ten years, instruction in six sigma has been increasingly linked with learning about the elements of lean production. Introduction to Engineering Statistics and Lean Sigma builds on the success of its first edition (Introduction to Engineering Statistics and Six Sigma) to reflect the growing importance of the "lean sigma" hybrid.

As well as providing detailed definitions and case studies of all six sigma methods, Introduction to Engineering Statistics and Lean Sigma forms one of few sources on the relationship between operations research techniques and lean sigma. Readers will be given the information necessary to determine which sigma methods to apply in which situation, and to predict why and when a particular method may not be effective. Methods covered include:

• control charts and advanced control charts,

• failure mode and effects analysis,

• Taguchi methods,

• gauge R&R, and

• genetic algorithms.

The second edition also greatly expands the discussion of Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), which is critical for many organizations that seek to deliver desirable products that work first time. It incorporates recently emerging formulations of DFSS from industry leaders and offers more introductory material on the design of experiments, and on two level and full factorial experiments, to help improve student intuition-building and retention.

The emphasis on lean production, combined with recent methods relating to Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), makes Introduction to Engineering Statistics and Lean Sigma a practical, up-to-date resource for advanced students, educators, and practitioners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference/Exam Prep Book, Poor Editing
After reading this book and the Quality Council of Indiana CQE Primer, I was able to pass the ASQ CQE Exam on the first attempt. This book is an excellent reference and was fairly easy to read.

However, a substantial percentage of the example problems in the book contain errors and omissions, most of which are typographical in nature.Errors include printing the square root symbol instead of the division symbol, "102" instead of "10 squared", the math shown simply not matching their answer (i.e., standby component example), example problems omitting where certain values were obtained (i.e., Weibull distribution example), etc.The sheer volume of errors is simply unacceptable -- especially for a second edition.

The Glossary, the statistics chapters, and the index all need improvement in my opinion. The Quality Council of Indiana CQE Primer provides much more detailed knowledge in many areas and has terrific example problems. However, the Primer does not have an index which I find is absolutely vital, especially for the timed ASQ CQE Exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Summary - Missing A Few Details
The book is a good place to start if you're studying for the CQE exam. After using this as my primary source and sitting for the exam, here's my recommendation on additional sources to fill in some of the book's weaker subjects: 1.) Find something that walks you through the steps of an audit 2.) Obtain the actual ASQ documents in the sampling section (the book leaves out a few crucial tables) 3.) Brush up on your basic probability (probability of X blue marbles in 5 succesive draws, etc).All-in-all a very good resource & easy to ready & understand.

Excellent reference text. I used it and was successful in my CQE exam. ... Read more

Product Description
Bridging the gap between power quality and signal processing

This innovative new text brings together two leading experts, one from signal processing and the other from power quality. Combining their fields of expertise, they set forth and investigate various types of power quality disturbances, how measurements of these disturbances are processed and interpreted, and, finally, the use and interpretation of power quality standards documents.

As a practical aid to readers, the authors make a clear distinction between two types of power quality disturbances:
* Variations: disturbances that are continuously present
* Events: disturbances that occur occasionally

A complete analysis and full set of tools are provided for each type of disturbance:
* Detailed examination of the origin of the disturbance
* Signal processing measurement techniques, including advanced techniques and those techniques set forth in standards documents
* Interpretation and analysis of measurement data
* Methods for further processing the features extracted from the signal processing into site and system indices

The depth of coverage is outstanding: the authors present and analyze material that is not covered in the standards nor found in the scientific literature.

This text is intended for two groups of readers: students and researchers in power engineering who need to use signal processing techniques for power system applications, and students and researchers in signal processing who need to perform power system disturbance analyses and diagnostics. It is also highly recommended for any engineer or utility professional involved in power quality monitoring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Acceptance Sampling
I have struggled over acceptance sampling terminology and concepts over the years.. almost the whole duration of my student life in the USA, and working life in Malaysia both in the industry and the academia.

This bookexplains very clearly the interpretation and use of the OC curves. It tellsme especially what AQL and LTPD are, it also tells me why the producer'srisk is related to AQL while LTPD is related to consumer's risk (read page79-80).

This is the first time in my academic career (as a lecturer inthe Malaysia Science University) that I have gone further (and moreconfidently) in explaining about OC curves. This book has certainlyenlightened me v-e-r-y m-u-c-h on acceptance sampling. I have actually usedmany different books for my other operations management classes but I hitthe wall when I come to OC curves.

This book also proves my assumptionabout the sigma in Cpk wrong (read page 70 line #1.) Had it not been forthis book, I would have continued to assume that the sigma (in Cpk) is thesame sigma as in variance (sigma squared).

This book is succint. Straightto the point and in clear language. The authors do not "beat aroundthe bush". The figures clearly explain the concepts talked about in aparticular section for example fig 5.5, and also figure on page 73.

Thisbook has enlightened me, and uncovered many of my wrong assumptions. Moreto go. Yet to savor the rest of the book.

I would certainly recommendthis book to practitioners or students who are serious about quality. ... Read more

Product Description
Since centuries foods have been preserved by heating, chilling, drying, salting, conserving, acidification, oxygen-removal,fermenting, adding various preservatives, etc., and often thesemethods were applied in combinations. More recently the underlyingprinciples of these traditional methods have been defined (i.e., F, t,aw, pH, Eh, competitive flora, various preservatives), and effectivelimits of these factors for microbial growth, survival, and death wereestablished. Food preservation and also food quality depends in mostcases on the empirical and now more often on the deliberate andintelligent application of combined preservative factors, i.e. onso-called hurdle technology. It also became obvious that futuristicfood preservation methods (e.g., high hydrostatic pressure,high-intensity pulsed electric fields, high-intensity pulsed light, oscillating magnetic fields as well as food irradiation) are mosteffective in combination with additional hurdles. Thus, hurdletechnology is also the key of food preservation in the future.Furthermore, basic aspects of hurdle technology (i.e., homeostasis, metabolic exhaustion, and stress reactions of microorganisms as wellas the multitarget preservation of foods) have been recognized to beof fundamental importance and are increasingly studied in relation tohurdle technology.Different aspects of improvements of traditional foods and in thedevelopment of novel foods via hurdle technology have been coveredrecently in numerous articles and book chapters.
