Not a very useful book
This book tries to cover so many subjects that it covers none of them well. Most chapters are full of generalities rather than the details needed by a practicing engineer or student. The worst feature of the handbook isthe index, which contains so few entries that it is very difficult to findinformation on a topic or determine if the book even mentions it, whichoften it doesn't. Rather than buy this expensive handbook, I would suggestinvesting in standard references for the individual topics (e.g. wastewatertreatment, solids waste) in which you are interested. ... Read more

Ehlers and Steele: Municipal and Rural Sanitation
There have been relatively few changes since this book was written. Some of the substances such as DDT, phenol and bichloride of mercury have passed from the scene but the peinciples are the same. I used the 1965 edition as a textbook in public health school. Most of the information is still useful, eapecially that for water and waste water management. Nazaroff and Cohen-Alvarez: Where were you when I got interested in this field a long time ago? I used to buy several texts to cover the material ccvered in this great book. It combines information from various disciplines and provides a comprehensive resource that is invaluable. It covers the basics and takes the reader-user through to applications. It is obviously a valuable resource for engineering students and faculty as well as practitioners.

Wow! Best work on this important subject.
Ms. Cohen and Mr. Nazaroff make environmental science spring to life in this comprehensive, fascinating work which will undoubtedly become the standard text for serious students of the environment worldwide.
