5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Reference
I am a plant metallurgist for a company and I constantly use this book to look at properties for various materials. The book is relatively small (unlike ASM books) and contains loads of hard to find information.

5-0 out of 5 stars More useful data than a dozen handbooks
Smith's book is excellent for two reasons:

1) His explainations of the properties, structure and applicaiton of various alloys is simple and to the point.(Many of them are somewhat out of date, but so is every other textbook in the world.)Excellent for metallurgists.

2) This book is so loaded with tables, you may never have to look any mechanical property data up in the library again.Excellent for mechanical engineers.

Although expensive, this book will replace a dozen others on your desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book is written from the prospective of a metallurgist. As such, it contains a very good discussion on the physical structure of various engineering materials, heat treatments, and alloy effects. However, italso contains lots of material data useful for engineering.

This is anexcellent book for those interested in more than stress-strain curves andyield stresses of engineering materials. ... Read more

* Written by an internationally renowned expert in the field and the author of the best-selling HyperText & HyperMedia.Amazon.com Review
An authoritative text by one of the premier researchers in usability engineering in the 1990s, Jakob Nielsen's Usability Engineering provides a landmark guide to software design that has helped bring this area of research into the mainstream of computing. "Usability" is the measurement of how easy or difficult it is to be productive with a piece of software. It often looks at the user interface--what elements appear onscreen and how efficient, confusing, and/or intuitive they are for beginning, intermediate, and advanced users. "Usability engineering" is the formal study of usability. It grew out of research on human factors, which looked at the way people interact with their environment.

The best thing about this book is its concise, cut-to-the-chase approach when defining usability and ways to measure and improve it. As the author notes, in the old days of computing, documents that attempted to define usability might have over 1,000 rules. The author offers just a handful of guiding principles for creating better software that apply even today. (Published just before the Internet revolution, this book's principles still hold true for Web designers, as well as those who create more traditional applications.)

Throughout this text, the author argues for the benefits of improved software usability. With software use as with all things, time is money and making more efficient interfaces translates into lower personnel costs and more productivity. The book also does a fine job of integrating usability design into the software development process, with guides for planning, working with end users, and running tests with users (whether on videotape or in person). The 50-page bibliography attests to the author's previous research on usability.

For anyone who needs to create better, more efficient software, Usability Engineering can help. This clear and intelligent guide to the science of usability engineering has helped enhance the potential of computers to work with end users more efficiently. In the new century, software developers will undoubtedly seek new advances in usability, in part because of the groundwork laid by books like this one. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Usability basics, measuring usability, types of users, history of user interfaces, the usability engineering lifecycle, design techniques, heuristics and hints for improving usability, testing, managing user tests, assessing usability, interface standards, internationalization, and Computer-Aided Usability Engineering (CAUSE) tools. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Some thing old, some thing new...
I'm not a usability expert, and this didn't quite match up with what I hoped to get out a of class on software evaluation for librarians (but that has more to do with the professor's slant on the subject and choice of book), but the book was easy to read and I felt that it covered some good points. It is, however, starting to show its age in some of the details, like the assumption that many software users will be unfamiliar with PCs and using a mouse to interact with a PC.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for user interface pros, too much for developers
If your specialty is the user interface, you need to read this book.If you are interested in developing a user interface design process, you should read this.If you are a software developer who wants to know how to build good interfaces, skip it.It is too much about perfecting the design process.

I was looking for 'use this button for x and this widget for y'.In other words, here are the rules for a good user interface. What I got was 'here is the process for studying users and their interfaces, and here is a mountain of statistics to back it up'.No fault of the author, I just mis-understood what I was getting.

Having said that, if you want to make your living studying and perfecting interface design, read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read if you want people to use your software
If you are an experienced user interface designer who thoroughly understands what usability is about you probably don't need to read the book (although I would find it strange that you are experienced and did not read this book which is attributed to have coined the term "Usability Engineering").

So who should read the book.Everybody that is going to develop any form of software. No, it won't make you an expert, but it will get you thinking.

On the negative side, some of the examples may some be slightly old (but its a 1993 book!).Sometimes you're also going to feel that you could stress this concept in half the space. However, the information and the thought process behind the information is extremely relevant and is well-worth the effort of reading the book.

If you are new in software development this book is an absolute must.In a sense it helps you develop "a way of thinking" rather than giving any specifics.

However, if you are looking for specifics, Chapter 5 deals with usability heuristics, presenting 10 of them. When looking at the list of 10 heuristics, they may seem obvious, trivial almost. It is quite amazing, however, how often those seemingly trivial things are overlooked or ignored.Just use some programs on your PC...

I think it would be worthwhile any software developers time to read Chapter 5 and think long and hard about what is said - then go back to your software and be honest with yourself. It might be some of the best lessons you'll ever learn.

In lots of ways this book has everything that classics are made of - except occasionally the ease of reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, read this review:
If his own principles had been applied to the book it could be reduced to a a few bullet points.

*the web is slow, less is more.

*tell people what a link leads too before they press it, and make sure it does.

*use standard fonts in easy to read colours.

*use standard web conventions where ever possible as they are familiar.

*check for spelling mistakes and grammar errors.

*write concisely and arrange depth of detail in hierarchies, like they do in errr reference books.

*tell the user where they are, and how they got their, um like a path prehaps.

*some people have small screens, some don't even use microsoft browsers, not everyone has the latest plug ins, allow for it.

*don't employ frustrated artists to design your site, use an engineer.

Jakob proudly states he has multiple patents in the field of usability, maybe following this book will infringe them, or maybe he just kept the good stuff for himself.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Do what I say, not what I do!"
The title I use is an old portuguese proverb. It is a good description of this book. In page 115 it says: "User interfaces should be simplified as much as possible,...". And then it takes almost 8 pages to explain it. Read it. His advices are pure gold. But don't build your user interface like this book was built: overcrowded with unnecessary details. There's another funny thing about this book. It's about design, mostly graphical. But doesn't talk to much about "creativity". ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides the theater technician with a foundation in structural design allowing an intuitive understanding of why sets "stand up".It introduces the basics of statics and the study of the strength of materials as they apply to typical scenery, with a minimum of theory and many examples. The material is presented such that only a basic knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry is required. This useful text is also invaluable to professionals as a permanent handbook complete with carefully selected reference tables, which are applicable to most theatrical situations.

Traditionally, theatrical design and carpentry are rooted in a craft-based tradition that places a high value on empirically tested techniques; in other words, if it was done that way for a show and nothing fell down, then that's the way it will be done.

Many scenic construction examples with a "how-to" approach
Material organized around one hour lessons with additional problems following each lesson and answers to the even numbered ones in an appendix
Three appendices with reference and design values for common shapes and sizes of lumber, plywood and steel used in theatrical applications ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars two thumbs up!
this book contains just enough theory and math to get an idea of load ratings for various things you build for the stage. very well done. it's college level, but assumes nothing.

3-0 out of 5 stars NIce try, but not enough attention to detail
This book does a nice job of attempting to simplify engineering theories and practices for theatrical Technical Directors.Unfortunately, in an attempt to make it palatable, the authors often get very convoluted in their explanations. We have also found that the solution appendix has several wrong answers in it.

I would definately wait for a second edition. Rumor has it though that a second edition is not in the foreseeable future.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Professional
If you are a technical director looking to improve your knowledge base and are committed to protecting the people who rely on your decisions, this book is invaluable. If you have ever looked at the Timber ConstructionManual, you know that building safe structures is a very complicatedprocess. This book is built on the fundamental principles that allowprofessionals to build structures like the Sears Tower and the Empire StateBuilding. It coalesces those ideas and applies them to sceneryconstruction. It allows TD's to learn how to make informed decisionsregarding the scenery they build. It is not for the faint-hearted.Thereis math involved. And it can be easy to get lost in the calculations. But, if you stick to it, the benefits are far reaching; from knowing thatyou have done your job well, to instilling confidence in those people whoput their lives into your hands.Any serious TD must understand theprinciples that this book imparts. You owe it to yourself and the peoplewith which you work. This book is the first to take difficult principalsand make them accessible to everyone, not just those with engineeringsdegrees.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Technical
Although it may be perfect for some people, this book was not what I was looking for. It promises to keep it simple--wow, I'd hate to see what's considered complicated. It's very heavy on the math and physics. If you arean engineer or a math-minded TD you might find this book fascinating. Ifyou are looking for how-to stuff, you'll be disappointed. It containsalmost no illustrations or plans and is mostly physics formulas. I'mlooking for instructions and plans on how to build lighter, stronger, better sets--in other words, the findings of TD's working with thesesformulas, not the math itself. If you want to design your own new stuff andget yourself into a Yale Tech Brief, this book is for you, but if you'rehoping this book will be another Tech Brief Collection, you'll bedisappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why sets stand up
Structural Design for The Stage is every teacher's dream come true. You can work with it in your classes just the way it is. Everything is organized around a normal one-hour lesson. Unfortunately the book is notmetric, which makes it hard to use in Europe. ... Read more

Product Description
This Fifth Edition of Structural Dynamics: Theory andComputation is the complete and comprehensive text in the field. Itpresents modern methods of analysis and techniques adaptable tocomputer programming clearly and easily. The book is ideal as a textfor advanced undergraduates or graduate students taking a first coursein structural dynamics. It is arranged in such a way that it can beused for a one- or two-semester course, or span the undergraduate andgraduate levels. In addition, this text will serve the practicingengineer as a primary reference. The text differs from the standard approach of other presentations inwhich topics are ordered by their mathematical complexity. This textis organized by the type of structural modeling. The author simplifiesthe subject by presenting a single degree-of-freedom system in thefirst chapters, then moves to systems with many degrees-of-freedom inthe following chapters. Finally, the text moves to applications of thefirst chapters and special topics in structural dynamics. New in this Edition:+ Problems reworked for SAP2000 TM. + Step-by-step examplesof how to use SAP2000 TM for every application of structuraldynamics, + Inclusion of a CD-ROM with three learning aids:SAP2000 TM student version; source code for the author's educationalprograms in structural dynamics, so that the results of changedparameters can be seen step-by-step; and the compiler (executablefiles) for the author's educational programs. + Three earthquakeengineering chapters updated to the latest ICC TM building codes. + Material rearranged so that theory and dynamic analysis precedeapplications and special topics, facilitating using the booksequentially. + Complete introductions provided to advanced topicsas foundation for further study. This text is essential for civil engineering students. 2-0 out of 5 stars The Figures are horrible
I used to read the Structural Dynamics (3rd ed.) from my university library. It was a great book with all explanation very clear and good examples.
Then a had the opportunity to buy the 5th edition. The text is a little different, but it is not a problem. The big problem is the figures that are horribles. It seems that all figures were scanned in low resolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
This book is wonderfull. I am a beginner in the subject. The book is easy to understand and gives an excellent "feel" for the subject. I read Chopra before and many times I had to reread to folow the "red line" and not get lost in "research" like proofs. Chopra is good too, but after this book to get a little further.
The programs are a real bonus to practice, and to see the programmingsteps clarifies the matter even more.
I can't belive there are people commenting on the "look" when the "content" is so good. I thank the author for saving me from frustration and writing the book as for "self study".

4-0 out of 5 stars stresses numerical solving
[A review of the 5th Edition 2006.]

Paz gives a comprehensive explanation of his subject. Suitable to a reader at perhaps the second or third undergraduate year, and who has had some calculus and linear algebra. A substantial portion of the text involves solving linear systems of equations, to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors. And for this, the maths background is essential.

What distinguishes the book from many older texts is the intensive use of computers to solve equations. This permits the tackling of harder problems, that are amenable only to numerical solutions.

Also, if you already use some other numerical package, like Maple or Mathematica, then you can ignore the binaries on the enclosed CD, and just recode.

5-0 out of 5 stars excelent book to understand the concept
This is an excellent book for beginners but doesn't have too much detail on the math part I believe. Still great book to understand the concept.

3-0 out of 5 stars low quality pictures
The material is well structured and the book is written in a clear and concise manner that's why I give five stars to the author. But I am really disappointed because I do believe that is unacceptable nowadays to allow for printing a book with such a poor quality of sketches/pictures. I think that most of them are scanned from previous material, and unfortunately it turned out that the scanning equipment was too sophisticated for author's assistants. So, I rate the publisher with just one star! - Please note that my comment refers to the fifth edition. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not like new
The book is not as what it was described. The seller wrote that it is like new, but it has an amount of highlighting and writing in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook
As the author Hibbler does in all of his textbooks, there is little to no explanation surrounding the theory of the topics.20% of the textbook is explanation of the topics, while the rest of the textbook contains examples and problems. Many of the problems are much more complex than the examples given, but if you have a good professor for the class, you should be alright. That being said, Hibbler does a good job of depicting all of the structural analysis methods in a very simple, easy-to-understand way. Therefore if you read this textbook, you will learn a lot, especially simple and short cut ways to solve structural analysis problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text Book Review - Structural Analysis (6th Edition), by Russell C. Hibbeler
This text book is great for describing both the introductory and advanced methods of structural analysis, i.e. statically determinate/indeterminate structures and matrix methods.ASCE-7 is referenced quite frequently in the beginning chapters of the text.Colorful diagrams are present throughout the text to give the reader a better understanding of the material. The only negative aspect of this text book is that it does not describe two-way floor loading very well.Recommendations: anyone who has an interest in structural engineering should buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Features Solutions to Complex Trusses
One characteristic of this book is the many complex trusses (including uncommon ones, and space trusses) that are featured. Otherwise, complex trusses can be broken down into a series of simpler ones.

There is also discussion of frames (including those with no sidesway), virtual work, Castigliano's theorem, matrix algebra, etc.

Product Description

During the last decade, the state of the art in Earthquake Engineering Design and Analysis has made significant steps towards a more rationale analysis of structures. Scientists have long recognized that earthquake design is guided by displacements and deformations rather than forces. However due to the historical background of structural engineers in static analyses, effects of earthquake on structures have been viewed as forces acting on the structures. All presently available design building codes are developed along these lines. Our knowledge of ground motion characteristics, earthquake geotechnical engineering, structural behaviour (design and numerical analyses) and model tests have advanced to a point where it is possible to anticipate a significant move from force based design approaches to displacements based design approaches. Although displacement based analyses constitute the kernel of most research programs, they have not yet been incorporated in the state of practice.

The purpose of the book is to review the fundamentals of displacement based methods, starting from engineering seismology, earthquake geotechnical engineering, to focus on design, analysis and testing of structures with emphasis on buildings and bridges.

Product Description

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the interdisciplinary engineering field devoted to the monitoring and assessment of structural health and durability. SHM technology integrates remote sensing, smart materials, and computer based knowledge systems to allow engineers see how built up structures are performing over time. It is particularly useful for remotely monitoring large infrastructure systems, such as bridges and dams, and high profile mechanical systems such as aircraft, spacecraft, ships, offshore structures and pipelines where performance is critical but onsite monitoring is difficult or even impossible. Structural Health Monitoring with Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors is the first comprehensive textbook to provide background information, theoretical modeling, and experimental examples on the principal technologies involved in SHM.

This textbook can be used for both teaching and research. It not only provides students, engineers and other interested technical specialists with the foundational knowledge and necessary tools for understanding modern sensing materials and systems, but also shows them how to employ this knowledge in actual engineering situations.

. Addresses the problem of aging structures and explains how SHM can alleviate their situation and prolong their useful life.
. Provides a step by step presentation on how Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWAS) are used to detect and quantify the presence of damage in structures.
. Presents the underlying theories (piezoelectricity, vibration, wave propagation, etc.) and experimental techniques (E/M impedance, PWAS phased arrays, etc.) to be employed in successful SHM applications.
. Provides an understanding of how to interpret sensor signal patterns such as various wave forms, including analytical techniques like Fast Fourier Transform, Short-time Fourier Transform and Wavelet Transform.
. Offers comprehensive teaching tools (worked examples, experiments, homework problems, and exercises) and an extensive online instructor manual containing lecture plans and homework solutions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good SHM textbook
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an emerging field, and only a handful of books have been written yet in this area. And most of the existing SHM books are rather research focused.

This book is, in my opinion, the first to offer a comprehensive presentation of the field from a teaching as well as research standpoint. Though the SHM area covered by the book has been somehow narrowed to only active SHM using piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS), the book offers, nevertheless, an opportunity for classroom SHM instruction on several levels: (a)upper-division undergraduate level; (b) mixed undergraduate/graduate level (BS/MS); and (c) advanced graduate level (PhD). In addition, the book can be used for teaching a series of related subjects such as vibration, wave propagation, smart/active materials, etc. Each chapter contains worked-out examples and lots of experimental details. Each chapter ends with homework assignments (problems and exercises).

A very useful and effective tool for teaching at all university levels, as well as for self instruction and continous education/short courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book on the Finite Element Method
This book remains a great intellectual achievement, right up there with the works of Timoshenko. I've been able to write several quite useful programs using various element stiffness matrices spelled-out explicitly in this volume.

Other books that I've read on F.E.M. seem to banter around the subject in obtuse mathematical terms. Przemieniecki derives ever step - and most importantly - he gives complete element stiffness matrices! I have copied very large 12 x 12 element stiffness matrices from this book into space frame and plate analysis programs that I've written with excellent results.

The book derives stiffness and dynamic matrices properties, essentially using the principle of minimization of potential energy. The book does not go into other types of problems such as heat-flow, torsion or fluid flow. But for structural engineers, like myself, I think that it's best to learn first the solution of stiffness problems to get a grasp of what F.E.M. is about.

The best $10.95 I've spent on a book (when it was easily available in bookstores). If you are into writing F.E.M. programs and if you can find this book, get it!

Product Description

The authors and their colleagues developed this text over many years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis courses at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The emphasis is on clarity and unity in the presentation of basic structural analysis concepts and methods. The equations of linear elasticity and basic constitutive behaviour of isotropic and composite materials are reviewed. The text focuses on the analysis of practical structural components including bars, beams and plates. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of thin-walled beams under bending shearing and torsion. Advanced topics such as warping, non-uniform torsion, shear deformations, thermal effect and plastic deformations are addressed. A unified treatment of work and energy principles is provided that naturally leads to an examination of approximate analysis methods including an introduction to matrix and finite element methods.

This teaching tool based on practical situations and thorough methodology should prove valuable to both lecturers and students of structural analysis in engineering worldwide.

This is a textbook for teaching structural analysis of aerospace structures. It can be used for 3rd and 4th year students in aerospace engineering, as well as for 1st and 2nd year graduate students in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good introductory book for matrix structural analysis
This textbook is more of reference textbook for someone who has already learned the fundamentals of matrix structural analysis. If you have never taken a course on matrix structural analysis and you are looking to learn the fundamentals, do not get this book. The authors wrote the book assuming the reader already has a background in the subject; most of the examples skip a lot of steps and are presented with little explanation. If you are looking for a good book on the fundamentals of matrix structural analysis, I highly recommend "Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures, by Weaver and Gere, 3rd edition."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for nonlinear frame analysis
I only ever use this book for nonlinear frame analysis. One of the few texts that explains the topic in full detail. Implementation will require knowledge of numerical methods gained elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Frame Analysis book I've seen
This is a well written and easy to understand book on structural analysis.More advanced than a typical undergraduate book, yet it presents the more advanced material so clearly that it could easily be used for an undergraduate course or a refernce for a practicing engineer.

Don't expect much on plate or solid elements as this is primarily a reference for frame analysis. But, for that topic, it's the best book I've seen and I've seen a lot of them.

Product Description
What is the role of fit measures when respecifying a model? Should the means of the sampling distributions of a fit index be unrelated to the size of the sample? Is it better to estimate the statistical power of the chi-square test than to turn to fit indices? Exploring these and related questions, well-known scholars examine the methods of testing structural equation models (SEMS) with and without measurement error, as estimated by such programs as EQS, LISREL and CALIS. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I bought this book to prepare for the SE II exam.I did not find it very useful. The problems are from past examinations (1970's and 80's), but NCEES does not publish old test questions. So I am guessing they are from old California state SE exams.I found the problems really complex. They are much more complex than the practice problems published by NCEES themselves. I learned more by studying my college text books and the code books. ... Read more
