3-0 out of 5 stars "Landscape Surveying" by Harry L. Field and "Elementary Surveying" by Breed and Hosmer
I am not a surveyor, but am a physicist who needed to do some surveying.I purchased two books: "Landscape Surveying" by Harry L. Field and "Elementary Surveying" by Breed and Hosmer (B&F).Field's book was written in 2004, Breed and Hosmer's in 1938.

I found the text by Breed and Hosmer to be far more complete and useful than the book by Field. Although Field's book treats the same range of subjects as does Breed and Hosmer's, the subjects are not treated in as great a depth, nor as rigorously, nor is the exposition typically as clearly written.Field's book does have the advantage that it includes a discussion of technologies not available in 1938, such as laser range finders and laser levels, and electronic transits. Field's chapter on Global Positioning Systems is useful and interesting. Field's book lacks any treatment of calibrating the equipment discussed, whereas B&F provide a thorough discussion on calibration of equipment, especially of transits and compasses.Since my transit is a vintage 1945 Keuffel and Esser model, I found this particularly useful.

Field's book provides numerous figures although, in some cases, the figures could be improved. For example, Field discusses converting slope distances to horizontal distances. The supporting figure 4.2 could be significantly improved with some inset triangles showing distances and angles with appropriate labels. There is no discussion of errors and accuracy. In contrast, B&F includes a thorough discussion of errors, and has numerous suggestions for improved accuracy.

The text in Field's book could also be improved. In numerous instances, sloppy writing leads to confusion. To cite one example, in a discussion of "profile leveling", the author states, "Reducing the precision for both these two illustrations could easily double the number of stations" (p. 81). In fact, the author must have meant that an increase in precision could easily lead to doubling the number of stations.

In summary, I found Breed and Hosmer's book to be far superior to Field's, and far better suited to my purpose. However, Field's book provides a useful summary for someone wishing to get a feel for surveying.I give Field's book 3 stars, and Breed and Hosmer's book five stars.

The Greeks and Romans achieved extraordinary feats of surveying in building their aqueducts, tunnels and roads and in measuring the circumference of the earth and the heights of mountains. This book, which contains translations of all the ancient texts on surveying instruments, including major sources hitherto untapped, sets out to reconstruct the instruments and to explain how they were used. The subject has never been tackled before in this detail, and a level of technical sophistication emerges which must count as one of the greatest achievements of the ancient world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion for the California PE - Principles of Surveying
I had used the standard study materials, and due to various reviews by others who had taken the test, decided to supplement my review by studying the topics covered in more detail with this reference, having not taken a surveying course in my undergraduate studies. The material is clear and concise (for a novice like myself), and aided my preparation greatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars very nice
the sender sent the book in a timely manner and the book is in great condition

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I have been a Civil engineering Instructor for the past five years and have used this text also. The text is quite handy for the intermediate to advanced level of Civil Engineeering students. This text should not beused for the beginner due to it's higher level of content. If this is tobe used for the introductory level, the instructor should have a copy onlyand use it a guide.More students in the introductory phase wash out afterreading a few chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
I've been teaching from this book for five years, so I'm obviously prepared to endorse it.I have required it for both civil engineering technology and civil engineering science students, although it is mostuseful to the former.

Several competing texts in surveying are in theirninth (or greater) editions.Ordinarily in academia, this is a testamentto the staying power of the author's work. The surveying profession, however, still relies upon texts that have long out-lived their originalauthors, who have since retired or passed away (e.g., Bouchard, Brinker,Brown).

In the area of boundary control and legal principles, theseminal ideas of Brown are still the standard. In measurement techniques, however, much has changed.Tape corrections, for the typical civilengineer, have been relegated to an obscure niche in surveying trivia.GPSand GIS should be separate and substantial chapters in a good generalsurveying reference.Current general tomes, however, are far from thecutting edge.

Kavanagh and Bird have provided in their fourth edition adescription of GPS that amounts to 12 pages.GIS is afforded even lessspace. The text remains a good practical reference for civil engineers ontraditional topics, without digressing into treatment of esoteric subjects, but as GPS continues to make inroads to the mainstream of measurementtechnique, and GIS becomes the standard by which surveying models will beconstructed, the demand for a fifth edition that gives these topicsexpanded treatment will increase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just As Good
Last summer, when I graduated with an associate degree in land surveying, I have been trying to get a hold of the second edition, 1001 Solved Surveying Fundamentals Problems, 2nd ed., since that was all I had ever heard of, but I always found it no less that $400 dollars which is a rip-off.Finally I saw a link that said there was a third edition, this book, for less than a hundred.I was skeptical, but it is just as good. 3-0 out of 5 stars Clear illustrations, but many mistakes throughout the book
I was required to purchase this text for my beginning Plane Surveying class. As my title indicates, there are good points and bad points to this book. There are many misprints and outright mistakes printed throughout the book, but the teachers liked it because it does provide some simple illustrations to help the beginning student in understanding basic concepts of land surveying. Our school has since switched to a different text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry but informative
This book has all the information you will need, but in a poorly laid out and difficult to read format

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the 6th edition will be better.
It is amazing to believe that this is a fifth edition book. The subjects chosen are potentially good choices but the author slices and dices the text to the point of confusion. In order to make a smaller, more manageable book, he has excised discussions which would help in explaining many of these advanced topics.I would like to say he was creating a "Surveying for Dummies" book but that would discredit the concise and well-written texts of this nature and give him too much credit. At close to $100 for a flimsy, ill-written, badly or never edited text, I would be ashamed to put my name on the cover no less be the printing house associated with this book.If you are an instructor looking for a book, run quickly away from this title; you'd be better off sending your students out onto the internet for information that would be more legible and definitely much cheaper.

Product Description

Georgia Land Surveying History and Law is the first definitive history and analysis of Georgia’s land system and the laws that govern it.

The book’s opening section tells the story of the surveyor’s role in transforming Georgia from a frontier to a bounded, populated, and productive colony and state. Paced by anecdotes of surveyors’ wilderness experiences, the narrative traces the evolution of Georgia’s land subdivision system, beginning with the original, and ultimately impractical, scheme of land granting and rectangular land subdivision under the Trustees of the Georgia Colony. The volume then covers the more flexible but easily abused headright procedure, and the subsequent lottery and succession of systematic, rectangular surveys under which most of the state was laid out and granted in the early nineteenth century.

Finally, in lay terms supported by meticulous citation of authority, the volume discusses the legal aspects of land surveying, including the interests that make up land ownership, the transfer of real property, the interpretation of property descriptions, the location of boundaries, riparian and littoral rights, and other topics. The book examines every point concerning boundaries found in any Georgia case or statute.

Based solidly on primary sources and the author’s fifteen years of experience in land surveying and title abstracting, Georgia Land Surveying History and Law is an exhaustively researched and scholarly reference that will be useful to surveyors, title attorneys, title abstractors, real estate professionals, geographers, cartographers, historians, and genealogists.
