Product Description
REVISED AND IN PAPERBACK
Practical Surveying and Computations is long established as a major land surveying textbook: the first edition was published as Practical Field Surveying and Computations (A L Allan, J R Hollwey and J H B Maynes).

The book has been completely rewritten revised to take account of the profound changes in surveying methods and applications due to electronic instrumentation and computerized data processing systems. These new developments give today's surveyor unprecedented freedom in the numerical handling of data.As a result, the emphasis is shifted from the need for detailed understanding of instrument function to the avoidance of blunders at the data-gathering stage and the ability to appraise computer output in the light of fundamental principles: that is, a quality control system. The explanations and examples in this new edition equip readers to select those procedures and techniques that are most reliable, accurate, cost effective and appropriate to the problem tackled.

Midwest Book Review
Recommended techniques are described in detail, and a survey checklist as well as in-depth notes round this solid guide ... literally priceless and an absolute 'must-have'.

Multihull Review
The detail of the book is excellent; the section on non-destructive testing particularly so. The book dedicates nearly 70 pages to Survey techniques and here the budding surveyor is given a really superb aide memoire including a checklist to follow to ensure nothing is missed.

UK Cruising Association
The writing is authoritative and presents the complexity of structural small ship design in understandable and comprehensive language. This book would aid and assist anyone contemplating the commissioning of a survey. A valuable addition to the library.

The latest in marine surveying technology is covered in the expanded and updated edition.

Dockwalk
This is a very sound practical textbook which could earn its keep on your bookshelf.

Work Boat World
A highly refined book that looks at every imaginable aspect of the design, construction, equipping, fitout and finishing of ships and boats, it is clear, concise and easy to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars "MARINE SURVEYING"Review
I was given this book to review by the YDSA, being a practising yacht surveyor in Britain. I found it to be a very poor book, written by somebody who, so far as can be seen, is not a marine surveyor but a lecturer in marine ventilation. A colleague who also reviewed the book agreed.

It would be of no help, and could be misleading.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have".
Now in an updated second edition, Handbook of Marine Surveying is a guide for both students and professionals of marine surveying. as well as boatyard operators and boat owners with an interest in the field. Illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, Handbook of Marine Surveying covers how to inspect and judge the quality of all aspects of a boat - from discerning signs of fatigue, buckling, or corrosion to the pros and cons of the wood, plastic, or metals in a boat's composition, to overseeing hulls, propellers, engine systems, and mechanical systems, to evaluating safety equipment and much more. Recommended techniques are described in detail, and a survey checklist as well as in-depth notes round this solid guide. Human lives depend upon the marine surveyor's expert determination of a boat's seaworthiness - making Handbook of Marine Surveying literally priceless and an absolute "must-have".

4-0 out of 5 stars The included software package
This is an excellent and relevant book. It is well structured, and the examples are very much practice oriented. However, when I tried to install the included software under Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Prof I failed. Only under Windows 95 it runs!
Did I something wrong or it is just like that!
I would appreciate any helpful comment!

Product Description
Land surveyors have played a fundamental role in the unique settlement history of British Columbia. The story of their work is awe-inspiring. Less than 150 years ago, the province—a rough and beautiful child of imperial ambition—was largely a vast wilderness, occupied by societies without written maps. Within a few years, that would change forever. Men from London and Victoria made their way along trails and up waterways, observing the stars, setting their compasses, and drawing the lines that would become roads and railways, international and provincial boundaries, towns and cities, farms and homes. Those invisible lines continue to form the backbone of British Columbia’s economic and settlement structure. This popular history tells the remarkable story of the men and women who surveyed the province. Using basic equipment, surveyors endured arduous work conditions. They witnessed the tragedy of colonial impact on aboriginal peoples, protected the interests of prospectors, settlers, and entrepreneurs, pioneered aerial technologies in the mountains, and left their names on landmarks all over British Columbia.Made to Measure paints an engaging, vivid portrait of land surveyors and their influence on British Columbia, linked inextricably to both the past and future settlement. ... The author relates a wealth of experience and provides proven methods of how boats should be built. The side stories of how things can go wrong were very entertaining and reenforced the technical side of the book. The bookis written from the european view and could use more info on fiberglassvessels. The drawings and photos were very good and the accompaniedcaptions very detailed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information- But Dated
Originally published in 1974 this book has lots of information on older style (wood) boats (wood) masts etc. Also the book is written more to the "want to be a surveyor?- this is how you do it" instead of"looking for a used boat?-here is what details to check out. AlsoNicholson is practices in Scotland and is geared toward european boats asopposed to us boats. I would suggest "Surveying Fiberglasssailboats" by Mustin as a better choice. Would I buy again? No. ... Read more
