Product Description
Along the rugged 360-mile border between North Dakota and South Dakota there once stood 720 quartzite markers, cut from the quarries near Sioux Falls and placed there in 1891 and 1892 by United States surveyor Charles H. Bates and his crew. In The Quartzite Border, Dr. Gordon L. Iseminger of the University of North Dakota recounts, for the first time, the intriguing story behind the surveying and marking of one of the nation's longest state borders.

Based on the author's exhaustive research of Bates' survey notes and his correspondence with the Interior Department and the General Land Office, The Quartzite Border reveals the political machinations of U.S. Senator Richard F. Pettigrew, who attempted to prevent Bates from securing the contract to make the survey, and afterwards sought to discredit his work. Using photographs, maps, and drawings, Dr. Iseminger provides the historical context of the survey, giving special attention to the struggle for statehood, the science of surveying, the stone industry in Sioux Falls, steamboating on the Missouri River, and life in the small towns that bordered the seventh standard parallel two years after statehood.

Yet The Quartzite Border is more than an account of Bates' survey and early statehood times. It is also an impassioned plea for the preservation of the markers, which, Dr. Iseminger writes, 'speak of a restless westering urge and the establishment of twin states where there was once a single territory; they speak of the confident expectations that the unsettled portions of the Dakotas would be filled by eager home seekers who would find the marked boundary to be of special utility as they located their claims; they speak of budding industries in established cities like Sioux Falls and of high hopes for fledgling communities like Winona, White Rock, and LaGrace; and they speak of a vast expanse of virgin prairie across which people had to transport themselves and their goods by railroad, steamboat, and teams and wagons.'

The second printing of The Quartzite Border: Surveying and Marking the North Dakota-South Dakota Boundary, 1891-1892 nearly twenty years after its first publication will be welcomed by those who have been unable to obtain copies because the book has long been out of print. Several corrections have been made to the second printing.

2-0 out of 5 stars A mile wide and an inch deep
I teach a college level surveying class. This book attempts to cover too much data without going into adequate detail. For an introductory class, it covers the basics too fast. For an advanced class, it does not dealadequately with the specifics. As an instructor, the book offers nosupport such as answer keys or internet support.I recommend Brinker &Wolf for intro classes and Constructions Surveying and Layout by Crawfordfor construction surveying classes.

2-0 out of 5 stars BOOK IS NOT AS INFORMATIVE AS ONE WOULD HOPE.
As an instructor, I found the problems associated with the LandSurveying field to be dated and calculations to be incorrect at times. It would help to have an answer key in order to figure out if your questions that the author wrote, can actually come up with the correct answers.I have been requesting an "Answer Key" for 2 years and yet to be able to receive one.I work for USD 501 and Teach Land Surveying. material - keeps you reading!

1-0 out of 5 stars not for academics
While I admire Mr. Coughlin for accomplishing the complex feat of completing a novel while struggling with significant health challenges, I was frustrated with the nature of this book.I was searching for a historical novel for my son's book report and was perhaps foolish to rely on Amazon's description of the book.Too much of the novel is set in the 1980's and I felt the time shifts were forced.I would much rather have read the tale of the original William Bassett, set in a more historic and accurate early 1800's. The jaunts into the 1980's were unnecessary to the central story. My son really took it on the chin for writing about a book that was only partially set in its promised historic era.I believe it was the history of surveying and the experience on the untamed land that needed to be the focus of the novel because that is what Mr. Coughlin clearly knows, and that is what could make this book truly unique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living the Dream is Great!
Living the Dream is much more then a historical novel, it is a delicious mix of history, mystery, love, science fiction and adventure stories.Barry Coughlin does a masterful job of stitching together characters and tales from separate points in the dimension of time.It is a delightful read and gives new meaning to the term déjà vu.Well done Barry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story

Have you ever read a book that you hate to see come to an end?If you have and you are seeking another to keep you intrigued, I would highly suggest this book. Mr. Coughlin, I can't wait to see more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs a heavydose of editing
I just bought this title a few weeks ago.The few chapters I read through and examined so far are full of mistakes, omissions and oversights such as incomplete sketches, text not matching the diagrams it tries to describe, errors in formulas and typographic errors.A few of the methods described are cumbersome and some chapters are just plain meaningless.
If there is ever to be a second edition of this book, which, granted this, serves a basic need, it better be accompanied by a really careful revision and serious editing effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Layed Out & user friendly
The book by engineer Paul Stull is just super. It is easy to understand & Paul's layout & surveying methods can be used & understood immediately by the novice. It is not only great for laying out sites for the building tradesman or woman but it can also be used by cabinet makers like myself for layouts in the shop. You know those trig. classes we all slept through in school???? Well Paul Stull makes sense out of all that was boring. Can't wait to get my own edition of this book, since I have been borrowing a friend's. This book is a great tool for architects, landscapers, contractors, wanna be excavators, carpenters & cabinetmakers etc. Gotta have it...... Herb Soss ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mountaineering Classic
One of the great sagas of 20th century climbing began in 1930 when eccentric globetrotter Joseph Rock, after having surveyed a remote stretch of mountains in Szechwan (Sichuan), declared the peak Minya Konka (Gongga Shan) the highest peak in the world, with an altitude of over 30,000 feet.

This claim, of course, needed to be verified. And the mountain needed to be climbed. (As might be expected, getting through China in the 1930's was, for these westerners, a lengthy adventure in itself.)

This book is the story of a small team of 4 climbers who reached the summit in 1932. Released in a revised edition by The Mountaineers in 1980, this edition is a particularly complete source, with additional contributions by climbers Terris Moore and Jack Theodore Young.

Trade paperback, 324 pp, 38 pp of b&w photos, incidental illustrations, a map, and 4 Appendices. Index. 4 page annotated Bibliography.

Product Description
This revised and reset fifth edition generally follows the structure of the previous edition, although some of the material of the earlier chapters has been rearranged, in addition to being extended and updated. A new feature of this edition is the allocation of a complete chapter to examining the problems of urban decline and renewal. Here the economic and social problems are discussed within the framework of current issues in urban policy, local government and planning. There are also extended sections on the economics of the development process and rehabilitation, an extended review of global environmental problems and their implications for the built environment, a review of long-term trends in the construction industry, an appraisal of cyclical factors and updated statistical and legislative material. The study should appeal as a basic textbook for undergraduate students of estate management, land economics, building surveying and quantity surveying. It is also suitable for students taking degree or equivalent courses in urban economics, urban geography or town planning and it should be relevant to those preparing for RICS and RTPI examinations. ... Product Description
Guidelines for Surveying Soil and Land Resources promotes the development and implementation of consistent methods and standards for conducting soil and land resource surveys in Australia. These surveys are primarily field operations that aim to identify, describe, map and evaluate the various kinds of soil or land resources in specific areas.

The advent of geographic information systems, global positioning systems, airborne gamma radiometric remote sensing, digital terrain analysis, simulation modeling, efficient statistical analysis and internet-based delivery of information has dramatically changed the scene in the past two decades. As successor to the Australian Soil and Land Survey Handbook: Guidelines for Conducting Surveys, this authoritative guide incorporates these new methods and techniques for supporting natural resource management.

Soil and land resource surveyors, engineering and environmental consultants, commissioners of surveys and funding agencies will benefit from the practical information provided on how best to use the new technologies that have been developed, as will professionals in the spatial sciences such as geomorphology, ecology and hydrology. ...
