Product Description
Uncover the Technology behind Hybrids and Make an Intelligent Decision When Purchasing Your Next Vehicle
With one billion cars expected to be on the roads of the world in the near future, the potential for war over oil and the negative environmental effects of emissions will be greater than ever before. Now is the time to seriously consider an alternative to standard automobiles.

Exploring practical solutions to these problems, Hybrid Vehicles and the Future of Personal Transportation provides broad coverage of the technologies involved in manufacturing and operating hybrids. It reviews key components of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, including batteries, fuel cells, and ultracapacitors. The book also discusses both concept and production-bound hybrids as well as the economics and safety issues of hybrid ownership. In addition, the author supplies effective tips on how to save gasoline with conventional and hybrid automobiles.

Making the jargon of fuel-efficient vehicles accessible to a wide audience, this guide explains the history of hybrids, how they work, and their impact on the environment. It will help you make a sound decision concerning the purchase and operation of a hybrid or electric vehicle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hybrid Vehicles & The Future of Personal Transportation
This book is very comprehensible to an intelligent individual. There is a wealth of both qualitative and quantitative information that is fundamental to understanding hybrid vehicles and automobiles in general. For me the book provides a sound basis for discussing the merits of these vehicles and their role in solving our energy problems.Allen Fuhs is an extremely competent engineer who writes with clarity about both the details and the processes appropriate to this topic. I gave a copy of the book to a friend who does automotive design and he is also very enthusiastic about the contents of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book on hybrid vehicles
I am a professor of electrical engineering, so I have critically evaluated the portions relevant to my area and found them to be accurate. In the book Dr. Fuhs has covered the four basic areas of power electronics, motor/generators (M/Gs), electrochemistry, and control. He has done a good job of connecting the electrical and mechanical aspects of the hybrid to illustrate the important tradeoffs. Many of his explanations start with basic physics, which allows everyone to follow the analysis.

I also liked the way he treated the commercial aspects of hybrids (the consequences of vehicle size, options, weight, etc.) and explained the nuances of the various vehicle rating systems (a discussion which should definitely be of value to consumers).

The book covers a very broad range of engineering and technology disciplines, and in this sense is unique from all other books on the topic. It has many "gems" of wisdom and thoughtful insight into the area of personal transportation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six Stars
As an overview of hybrids, this is an endlessly fascinating book by Allen Fuhs.

Extraordinarily broad in its coverage, it ranges from peak oil (with useful new details) to the differences in suitable electric motors; it is filled with lots of practical nuts-and-bolts calculations that will appeal to the armchair-engineer who enjoys interpreting numbers and juggling costs, pay-offs, and alternatives in range, fuel consumption and weights. (*)

Because of Big Oil disinformation efforts -- see EV web sites and discussions hijacked by AI-generated posts of encyclopedic substance and length -- I don't accept the criticism of other reviewers as necessarily valid.

Big Oil disinformation? Surely you jest? Wally Rippel - WKTEC - "There is a $100T (T as in Trillion) worth of business still to be done (in oil in the ground)." For obvious reasons 'peak oil' and 'global warming' are not popular topics for Big Oil - see the last eight years for details. You bet there is disinformation. And a lot more besides. Got Peter Dale Scott?

I found it in Stanford University's bookstore and, in this case, go by the theory that if it is good enough for Stanford U's engineering students it is good enough for me, and perhaps you. You might try to look at a copy before making your own mind up.

(*) The extraordinary broadness of its coverage and its clever and approachable explanation of the tradeoffs in hybrid vehicle design -- noted by EMprof -- and above all, the clarity of its thinking, are very reminiscent of two works that were outstanding in a different field - Darrol Stinton's The Design of the Aeroplane, and The Anatomy of the Aeroplane - two magnificent books for those interested in another EAA - the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Another EAA; since the EV was (re) born and the Electric Auto Association became more widely known.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been a great book...
I am a mechanical engineer working on a development project and purchased this newly-released book based on the contents description and author's credentials ("Distinguished professor and SAE Fellow").

I am extremely disappointed with the content of this book. From literally the inside of the front jacket it is full of technical errors and incomprehensible charts.Sentence fragments are pervasive and the writing in general is imprecise and often overly casual.Occasionally the author tosses in seemingly random thoughts that serve to distract the reader.(What does pickup truck tailgate position have to do with hybrid vehicles? Nothing.)

If you overlook the incorrect unit conversions on the jacket (degrees Kelvin??) and flip past the literally 23 page Contents (??!) you come to the Preface, where you will find some clues to what went wrong. The author restates the purpose of the book about four times; "for buyers or would-be buyers of hybrids...", "intended for potential hybrid customers", "information for the educated citizen", "for the engineer...a starting point for additional research".I think I disagree with all of these. As a 460+ page book full of equations this is clearly not a buyer's guide.Unfortunately, no engineer can make use of the contents because it is so full of errors and inconsistencies that any seemingly useful nuggets of information must be researched from scratch to determine their validity. What responsible author cites Wikipedia as the source for a graph used to illustrate a key technical concept? (Figure 7.1)

It is perfectly acceptable to publish a technical book that is not written for engineers. It is another thing entirely to release a book that is full of charts, graphs, equations, and statistics that imply a level of technical accuracy that does not stand up under scrutiny.

My overwhelming impression is that the book was rushed to the printer without adequate proofreading and technical editing.Perhaps the publisher gave in to the pressure to cash in on the fuel economy craze that hit in late 2008, and what could have been a useful and comprehensive technical overview turned into a typed collection of notes. It is indeed a shame, since the basic research and technical understanding was clearly there. The author and/or publisher simply did not have the discipline to properly finish the job.I fear for our collective future as an innovative society if we begin to accept work like this.

I believe there is a place in the market for an interesting and accessible technical overview of hybrid vehicle technologies. This is not that book.

Product Description

The development of U.S. urban transportation policy over the past 50 years illustrates the changing relationships among federal, state, and local governments. This comprehensive text examines the evolution of urban transportation planning from early developments in highway planning in the 1930s to today’s concerns over sustainable development, security, and pollution control. Focusing on major national events, the book discusses the influence of legislation, regulations, conferences, federal programs, and advances in planning procedures and technology.

The book focuses in-depth at the most significant event in transportation planning--the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1962; creating a federal mandate for a comprehensive urban transportation planning process carried out cooperatively by states and local governments with federal funding, this act was crucial in the spread of urban transportation. Claiming that urban transportation planning is more sophisticated, costly, and complex than its highway and transit planning predecessors, the book demonstrates how urban transportation planning evolved in response to changes in such factors as environment, energy, development patterns, intergovernmental coordination, and federal transit programs. It further illustrates how broader concerns for global climate change and sustainable development have braided the purview of transportation planning. This fully updated, revised, and expanded edition highlights the dynamics of transportation planning post-9/11, covers the impact of recent legislation, emphasizes such timely issues as security, oil dependence, performance measurement, and public-private sector collaboration.

2-0 out of 5 stars terrible book
This was a "suggested" purchase for a grad class. The text is overly complex, the subject matter extremely difficult to understand. While I was able to use it for my class, it required multiple readings in order to obtain a primitive understanding of the topics. Not presented well and ill suited for a non-mathematics or statistics class. Perhaps mismatched for the course I was taking, but again, a book like this should not be this difficult. I do not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makajuma
This is a good text for transport analysts even with limited economics background. I have no regrets for having purchased this text, it's value for the money spent on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for transportation professionals
This book is a must for transportation analysis.Too often, the link between economic efficiency and engineering is ignored, leading to inefficient investments in public infrastructure.McCarthy provides insights which planners, engineers and policy makers with only a minimal understanding of economics can use to better serve the public and the taxpayers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Transportation Economists
This is a great book for students, researchers, and professionals such as analysts and consultants!! If you are a student with Eco 101 background, this book can guide you through learning the theory and applying the theory to analyze issues in transportation decision-making. If you need to write a course paper for your class, you can simply read one of the Case Studies in the book, and then conduct your own research from there. It will save you a lot of time! If you are a researcher or in research business, you will find that the theory and cases in the book cover most of the important issues in transportation economics. The Case Study is more than a literature review, because it not only presents the conclusions as most literature reviews would do, it actually lists the models and equations and explains how the models are specified. It is really a great book to have handy.

If Professor McCarthy decides to release a new edition sometime down the road, I would wish that he expand the investment chapters and add a new chapter on transportation financing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting to school
Of the many problems Americans frequently complain about, one has been lurking under the radar over the last several decades, and has occasionally surfaced in nasty fights at the state and local government level. This problem is that of transportation to and from college campuses. As the US population grows, the availability of open land goes down, and the number of college students increase, physical access to colleges has become a perennial issue in many states.I came to discover this in the past decade.First as a student, and now as a staff scientist at Arizona State University, I have been at ASU since 1994.In that time, I have watched parking at ASU go from great, to downright horrible.

Dr. Michael Crow became ASU's president in 2002, and since then, he has proceeded to enact numerous changes at ASU.One of them is the transformation of ASU from a commuter campus to a residential campus, and the associated loss of parking spaces inherent in such a change. As part of this, Dr. Crow had asked the students of ASU to form a task force to address transportation needs.I joined this task force, and as part of my duties, read a lot of books on transportation issues of college campuses. This is one of the books I read.I am glad I read this book.It examines transportation management at universities across the US, from large public schools, to small private schools, from schools in the countryside to schools in downtown. This book looks at the various aspects of transportation management, such as public transit, carpooling, greener forms of transit, correlating the demand and supply of parking on campuses, how to get schools and other government agencies to work together, etc, etc...

The book provides detailed case studies of how specific schools have handled their transportation needs for both their employees and students.Successes and failures are highlighted, and how both came to be.Details are given, such as costs, timelines, maps showing how transit plans were developed, charts correlating bus usage with ticket prices, etc...The primary conclusion reached by the book are similar to those I reached while working on the task force at ASU: reduce demand for car parking instead increasing supply. All in all, a great book that should be required reading for anyone who intends to work in the administration of a university or college.I do not give it five stars because it lacks examples from other countries, where cars are used less frequently than here in America. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating technical discussion of US Army mule transportation.
Daly & Scott have produced a fine book about the US Army's use of Mules. While the book is quite technical, the detail is well explained and easy to follow. To enjoy this book, it would help the potential reader to know a bit about mules and animal transport. As a history, the book provides a good overview of the historical organisation of mule transportation; it discusses the South American origins of mule transportation, and the well chosen photographs are also informative. The book lacks discussion of mule pack transportation in World War Two - it would have been good if this was discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
Description: Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems is a sequel to the author’s earlier text on Space Transportation: A Systems Approach to Analysis and Design. Both texts represent the most comprehensive exposition of the existing knowledge and practice in the design and project management of space transportation systems and they reflect a wealth of experience by the author with the design and management of space systems.

The text discusses new conceptual changes in the design philosophy away from multistage expendable vehicles to winged, reusable launch vehicles and presents an overview of the systems engineering and vehicle design process as well as systems trades and analysis. Individual chapters are devoted to specific disciplines such as aerodynamics, aerothermal analysis, structures, materials, propulsion, flight mechanics and trajectories, avionics and computers, and control systems. The final chapters deal with human factors, payload, launch and mission operations, safety and mission assurance. The two texts by the author provide a valuable source of information for the space transportation community of designers, operators and managers.

A companion CD-ROM succinctly packages some oversize figures and tables, resources for systems engineering and launch ranges, and a compendium of software programs. The computer programs include the USAF AIRPLANE AND MISSILE DATCOM CODES (with extensive documentation), COSTMODL for software costing, OPGUID launch vehicle trajectory generator, SUPERFLO–a series of eleven programs intended for solving compressible flow problems in ducts and pipes found in industrial facilities; and a wealth of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet programs covering the disciplines of statistics, vehicle trajectories, propulsion performance, math utilities, materials and structures, structural/tank design, and decision analysis. Lastly, references are made to the premier tools for orbital trajectories and satellite modeling. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good perspective on the industry
Not bad, A generalized view on the structure of aviation management. Your basic stuff, Railway Labor act,Ntsb,Warsaw pact, blah, blah, blah. Book missed out on the real issues such as fuel costs ($149barrel of oil) overtaking labor costs and nearly bankrupting the entire system, (R.I.P. express jet,Air Italia,Frontier (hang in there) ,Northwest (now absorbed by Delta), Ahloha,ATA,Sterling, etc, etc. Book also missed out on the use of extreme cuts in operating costs and maximized load factors to counter the result of the extreme cost of fuel and a resession ladeneconomy. generic in scope but missed all the recent fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive textbook on air transportation management

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of various aspects of the air transportation business. The book is well written and easy to follow and understand which makes is accessible to a wide audience and all stakeholders of the air transport industry. Even those who are not familiar with the industry should find it easy to assimilate the information.

The positive points above are also the main drawback of the book for those that need a more indepth coverage of the subject, who may find the book a bit shallow. The authors also need to update the book to take into account the various major changes that continue to take place in the air transport industry.

Therefore I recommend the book to those seeking a comprehensive but basic knowledge of the air transport business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized Text on Managing Air Transportation
Whether you manage an airline, an airport, or aspire to do so, This text is for you. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only true textbook on management in the air transportation industry and it is worth every penny of its cost.

I have a long interest in the airline industry and it was nice to find a book that has no agenda that covers the subject. Although truly a textbook it is a well-organized, well thought out book that is easy to follow and understand. Perfect for students or managers in the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Aviation Delight
I have purchased Mr. Wells books for many years. Every book is meticulously and painstakenly accurate. His books are most appropriate for college level and post-graduate aviation students beginning their formal training. Yet, I find myself scrambling back to all his books for background information, general and some detailed analysis all the time.

Include this book into your library. It's part of my classic aviation collection. There are chapter outlines, checklists, and relevant examples applied to give the novice a quick blast into an aerospace career.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best text on the market
This book is "the" standard book to use in any type of air transportation environment (industry, academia, self-use). This book is a one-stop shop for anything and everything one needs to know about aviation (GA and commercial). Looking forward to future titles by the authors. ... Read more
