Product Description
The Farm Welding Handbook covers how to set up a farm-specific welding shop, select and use welding equipment, safety, and varied welding processes. While the book focuses on oxyacetylene gas and arc welding, the most common methods such as wire-feed MIG welding for soft metals are also covered.

This handbook also presents welding from a working farmer’s perspective – what to do in poor conditions in the field, how different metals in various pieces of farm equipment are to be welded, and more. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
I didn't find much useful information in this book.It explained the obvious (don't weld in a hayloft - it might catch fire, etc.) but offered little meat on techniques.

The author was apparently quite taken with a young lady welder - she appears frequently in the photos!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Farm Welding Handbook
Over all, the book was excellent.Keep in mind that I am new to welding, so the book looked pretty good to me.Personally, I could care less about the history of welding and the blacksmith in the very begining of the book, but from there, Richard Finch shows the reader how to set up a good Farm Welding shop and also tells the reader what tools are needed. He too goes over saftey in the next Chapter. He then talks about the different farm welding processes such as oxyacetylene, arc (stick) and MIG (wire fed).Finch also covers how to identify metals on and around the farm.Chapter 5 covers oxyacetylene cutting, heating and plasma cutting. From there on, he pretty much goes into all of the processes I prevously mentioned only in much greater detail. He also concentrates on some "hard to weld" metals such a cast iron and aluminum. At the end of the book, he has writen a very good referance guide on where to buy welding tools and acessories.
Over all, this is a very good book, especally for the farmer who does not know too much about welding already. ... Read more

Product Description
High-performance steels and aluminum alloys pose significant challenges to resistance welding processes. Unfortunately for students in materials science, metallurgy, and manufacturing, most available books provide only a superficial treatment of resistance spot welding. Surveying the topic in a scientific and systematic manner, Resistance Welding: Fundamentals and Applications supplies practical insight into every aspect of the field.

This book comprehensively examines every aspect of resistance welding, from metallurgy and fundamental physical processes, such as electrothermal processes and discontinuities, to mechanical testing, process monitoring and control, weld quality and inspection, expulsion, and numerical simulation. The authors consider the influence of mechanical characteristics of welding machines and emphasize statistical design, analysis, and inference in resistance welding research, enabling students to conduct their own investigations. They present state-of-the-art research results from their own studies as well as from other leading experts, and the text's many examples are derived from real experiments. Case studies and nearly 300 figures illustrate the concepts.

Resistance Welding: Fundamentals and Applications imparts a fundamental understanding of resistance welding processes and phenomena that empowers students to approach high-performance steels, aluminum alloys, and other new materials with confidence. It is an ideal upper-level undergraduate or graduate text for courses in assembly and joining processes, fundamentals of welding, and manufacturing processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I am an amateur welder who takes his welding seriously.

Two books that welder should have are:

The Procedure Handbook For Welding/Lincoln publications
New Lessons In Arc Welding/Lincoln publications

Both are available from Lincoln for absurdly low cost.

This book is a sort of complement to The Procedure Handbook. It covers a lot of the same subjects but with a very practical bent.It has tips on jigging and fixtures, how to design welds for common applications so that they minimize stress, how to design welds so that you can actually reach the joints when you construct them.Particularly interesting to me was a detailed section on bending or straightening steel by strategic heating and cooling. It also has useful guides on brazing and onsoldering copper pipes.Though I am comfortable with both these procedures, I learned quite a bit from Marlowe's book.

It's easy to read, the diagrams are clear.Just a few minutes browsing will reward you with something useful you didnt know.

Perhaps if you are a pipeline welder or have been working in fabrication for 20 years, this book wont teach you much. But for the rest of us, it's a goldmine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Q&A infomation format for your welding fabrication and repairs
Again in the Q&A format, Dealing with real world fabrication issues. And tips and insights for solving them. They give clear concise info on the correct terms and descriptions. Of steel, piping, tubing, and other stuff we tend not to know the correct terms or use age of scheduling # of pipe/tube and the wall thickness. Again the contents page and the back cover says it all.

This book like the first book on welding is for the hobbyist/art/occasional welder. Along with the daily working welder. It covers tools, terms and descriptions that most Hobbyist/artists might not know when going to a supplier. It gives a basic over view of tools that are useful in a welding shop area. Covers repairs and the proper way of doing the planning, layout and execution of a job. bending of assorted shapes and ways for tubing and pipes. It will give you a very good idea if it will work, if you can do it with what you have. Or even what you may need to get to do a job you can be proud of.
It is a great shop reference with out the usual extra baggage of the text books they sell.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money.
This book is a handfull of badly written questions with answers that are so specific, unless you are doing the exact project/task they mention, the answers are totally useless. These are all trade specific answers. If youre a pipe fitter, or professional fabricator I would think you'd have a better way of learning than this book. Also the lack of an index makes this book infuriating to try and use as reference.Thank god I got this book free.Too bad there's not an option for zero stars.

Also note that all of the other reviews for this book are either anonymous or written by Mr. Tallman who is related to the illustrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars we suggest getting it
we would like to inform anyone getting this book that, at this time it does not ship within 24 hours. we are still waiting for ours and have been waiting for 6 days and, it still has not been sent out to be shipped. we will love this book when we finally get it!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you

4-0 out of 5 stars A New MIG Machine Wasnt Enough
I bought a MIG welding machine and quickly learned to put down nice weld beads. But when I tried to weld up a project with angle iron, I quickly discovered I didn't know how to make anything. This book shows how to make square frames, and assemble other basic building blocks. There are also lots of rules of thumb and good industry practice, but no heavy math. If you're like me, you will save a lot of time, steel, and welding materials if you read this book before starting your welding project. Many helpful drawings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
Great book have made several welding projects out of it so far easy to understand directions , very clearly written. would recomend this book for any one that wants a good book on welding projects , it is even a good book to add to your library at home even if you don't weld. there are a lot of projects in it for the welding part of it, to automotive stands and exercising equipment stands and barsand even some for out door as activity. As I said a great book for the beginner to the professional welder

1-0 out of 5 stars A book of plans...
That's all this is, a 96 page book of plans for assorted things: sports, gym, shop, auto, home and yard equipment. 100% line drawings in a blueprint type format. No photos (except for the front cover), no instruction on how to make the stuff, nothing on how the bend pieces were bent -- a few bending jigs would have been nice. Not worth the time or money.

If you're looking for welding projects with some instruction and photos try "Artisan Welding Projects"by Karen Ruth. The back of "Welding Basics" has some projects as well.

This book is being returned less than a 1/2 hour after getting it.

4-0 out of 5 stars OOPS!Correction To My Previous Review
In my previous review, I said there are two different iceboat designs. There is actually only one.Don't know how or why I said there were two.Sorry.

Still a great book though, even if only one iceboat design.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of DIY Inspiration
Been looking at purchasing a new weight bench?Been pricing a hydraulic bearing press lately?Had your eye on a pair of those stilts used by carpenters to install drywall?Well, hold on to your pocketbook because this is the book for you. That is, if you have basic welding skills and access to a good welding machine.

"Welding Projects" is mostly a collection of diagrams and information for many different projects that the average welder-equipped handyman can build at home. The projects are grouped under such chapters as Sports Equipment, Gym Equipment, Shop Equipment, Auto Equipment, Home Equipment and Yard Equipment.A sampling of the included projects include a snowmobile dolly, two different ice boat designs, a frame-mounted receiver hitch for your truck, an engine stand, a lawn cart, a pumping-style windmill, a computer table, a baker's rack and even - get this! - a climbing deerstand. In all, there are nearly 70 different projects for the welder, and products that can be used by man, woman, and child.

What "Welding Projects" is not is a step-by-step manual for assembly, though its diagrams and information are relatively easy to understand. What it does contain are measurements, relevant diagrams, materials and some very handy reference data at the beginning of the book.

All in all, I highly recommend this book. After thumbing through it, you will find yourself longing to build things you don't even need just because you can.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good project book for a high school welding class
Mr. Ruck is a metals and welding instructor in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. His book contains 69 well-drawn plans for welding projects for sports equipment, gym equipment, shop equipment, auto shop accessories, homeitems, and yard equipment. The projects grew out of needs his studentshave for life in a rural area of Wisconsin. They reflect the interests ofhigh school boys in that setting (snow shoes, an ice boat, a deer hunter'stree stand, engine hoist and an engine stand, weight lifting and exercisebenches, lawn and shop carts). There is very little written text.Theinformation on the drawings is very complete, including a materials listfor each.(96 pages) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Purchase
This is an excellent book.I am still studying it for information.I am just reviving an old interest as a hobby.Years ago, in high school, I did a welding project. Now, I finally have a place of my own where I can try out some things. The only thing I wish the book had in it is more ideas for projects. It's not that I need ideas so much as the ensuing descriptions and instructions would give even more insight into methods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arc Welding, by John R. Walker
A good basic text and then some. Whether you are a dedicated "student" of welding, or simply find yourself plagued with the genuine need to be more proficient, ARC WELDING, may be your ticket. The author has packed the book with dozens of simple but effective cutawayillustrations that demonstrate the essentials of the subject, including thedifference between good welds and unacceptable welds. The author providesminimal text to accompany the visuals but does a decent job of explainingthe logic of each subject. This book provides a fundamental understandingof the "why" behind professional practice/craftsmanship inwelding as opposed to a "just getting by" approach. Whetheradvanced or a beginner, ARC WELDING, is informative and thorough--in thesame way one would expect a good textbook to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good.
But don't most of us already know the basics of metallurgy? It reminds me of the time I saw my brother smoking cigarettes behind the garage. He had stolen them from my mother and didn;t really seem to be enjoying himself. But he smoked the whole pack. As he finished, I thought to myself, "what a loser." But the fact was I had sat there for 45 minutes watching him smoke all those cigarettes. So, I guess I was even a bigger loser. A moniker that stayed with me most of my teenage life. I didn't dislike school, I got to see a lot of pretty girls that would never have sat next to me anywhere else. I didn't get good grades, as I was addicted to after-school cartoons like Tom & Jerry. Even well into my teens. If I see them now, I watch them in totality looking for what appealed to me when I was younger. I can't find it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Welding Metallurgy

Watch out for the rip off.

The adds will say "paper back 2.6 ounces"

The 27 page rip off edition weighs 2.6 ounces.

When I complained about the rip off, they said, "When the returned item(s) are received and processed, we will issue a refund
to the credit card number submitted with this order for the product price of
the returned item(s), not including the shipping and handling."

I am just going to chuck the instructor's edition in the trash and chalk it up to internet rip off.

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

In eleven raucous, touching stories, Tim Gautreaux traces the course of sin and redemption through the lives of small-town women and men in Louisiana. His unforgettable characters include a grandfather who discovers, while ctaking care of his grandchildren, that they are growing up without any sense at all of right and wrong; a camera repairman who discovers a woman's secret in her undeveloped film; and a one-armed hitchhiker who changes the life of the man who picks her up. Each one a small miracle of storytelling and compassion, Tim Gautreaux's stories are "a pleasure from start to finish. You want to hand [this book] to your friends and say 'read this' " (The Plain Dealer).

Amazon.com Review
In Tim Gautreaux's pitch-perfect portraits of rural Louisiana life, thereis no force stronger than a good Cajun-style chicken stew--except, perhaps, the vagaries of old age. Welding with Children has more than itsfair share of the latter, beginning with the funny and moving title story,in which a grandfather drives around the four offspring of his four singledaughters using what neighbors unkindly call "the bastardmobile." Raised ona steady diet of Icees and daytime talk TV, Bruton's grandkids finallyinspire a housecleaning of truly spiritual dimensions, proving the adagethat "everything worth doing hurts like hell." Other stories follow ahard-drinking priest sent on a strange errand of automotive atonement, amanic-depressive Creole princess playing cocktail piano in a motel lounge, and a one-armed feminist hitchhiker on a quest for academic tenure:
When a search committee member told me they'd received an application froma gay black female double amputee from Ghana, I reminded the committee thatpart of my childhood was spent in Mexico, and then I played my last cardand came out as a lesbian.... But it did no good. The college found someonemore specialized, foreign, and incomplete than I could ever be.
Fair enough. But while most of these tales rely on a certain tried-and-trueSouthern eccentricity to work their magic, two stories point to whatGautreaux can do when he seeks to do more than just charm. In "SorryBlood," another old man loses his way--mentally and physically--in aWal-Mart parking lot. An opportunistic con man poses as his son, then putsthe kidnapped "Ted Williams" to work digging a ditch in the sun. Scary, yes, but not as scary as the old man's struggle to hold on to his memory:"This is an egg. What am I?" In the brief and powerful "Rodeo Parole," fourinmates play a dangerous waiting game with an enraged bull, spurred on bythe knowledge that a rodeo victory means scoring points with the paroleboard. The bull, after all, is no more or less than their fates, "like ajudge saying something and you can't stop it or change it." Gracefullywritten and spiced with vivid regional detail, these are tales by a masterstoryteller who's not afraid to blend some darkness into his fictionalroux. --Mary Park ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mix of Louisiana characters
This collection of short stories is outstanding in its own right; but the locations of the stories and the depiction of the characters set it apart. If you are interested in southern Louisiana, be it Cajun or piney woods, this is a book you must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
A friend handed me a tattered copy yesterday. I finished this afternoon. It was superb. Rarely have a read a collection this compelling. Buy it, read it, and pass it on.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite collection of short stories
I read this book upon the recommendation of a clerk at Books Along the Teche in New Iberia, LA.J.L. Burke may be New Iberia's favorite son, but Tim Gautreaux offers much more to the reader. His dialogue and characters ring authentic. Each story is one you are glad to read, and "Easy Pickings" is a story you will remember with a smile and a chuckle for the rest of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
I just finished reading this book, and could start all over again.Gatreaux has a wonderful way of crafting a story with believable people. No matter where the reader is from, because of his character descriptions, it is easy to identify with these folks from Louisiana. Gatreaux's short stories evoked all kinds of emotions, but there were many places where I simply laughed out loud. The best thing about this book, is the ability of the author to depict flawed characters living flawed lives, who nonetheless experience redemption in various ways.I will be looking for more books by this talented writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welding with Children
This second collection of short stories from Tim Gautreaux is, perhaps, even better than the first.Of course, if you look inside the book and see who published the individual stories, it's obvious that they must be good; The New Yorker, Atlantic, and Esquire are not noted for publishing bad fiction.

While these are fiction, the stories ring so true to life and the lives of the characters, that we can all see ourselves in someone in this collection. Most of Gautreaux's stories have a touch of humor, but all show the depth of character that draws readers into the stories.

Anyone who reads these stories and enjoys them, should also read his novels. You'll find that same voice and an author you can trust, who will not betray your empathy for his characters. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not sure yet.
I am new to welding so I am not sure if this book is a good one or not. This summer I plan on giving some of these projects a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good idea book for fundamental skill building

5-0 out of 5 stars Welding book
I enjoyed this book as I am a beginning welder. And when I took it to class, the instructor immediately ordered a couple more to help give folks ideas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dazed and Confused
The book had a lot of ideas for garden art, which I enjoyed, but each project uses a different welding technique and different types of welding tools. A person would have to invest a lot of money into all these various tools in order to build the pieces of garden art the book suggests.Which is highly inpractical. So even though I enjoyed seeing the garden art, it would be impossible to construct it the way the author suggests, unless a person had an entire shop of welding tools to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Fun Ideas
This book has some fun ideas for crafts and gives me inspiration to try some different projects.I appreciate Roy's beginning the book with different welding techniques and pointing out safety issues first.Welding arts & crafts is fun, but certainly has hazards involved.Roy addresses these issues at the beginning.I personally know D.Roy and have been in his classes. He makes the classes just as enjoyable as this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I bought this book thinking it would show/describe common techniques for art related projects (some do's and dont's). Or even a bit on brazing (for welding with exotic meatals like copper and brass). Instead, it is just a step by step for several really uninspired projects. And then mostly tack welding. Not much serious welding. It does cover some very basic information on the different welding processes, but you can get that online for free. I would suggest saving up for weekend welding classes at your local community college. At least you will learn proper welding techniques from pros. You can then determine what equipment is best for you for your needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Welding for Arts and Crafts
I was very dissatisfied with this book. I was expecting a book that explained the idea of and how to do Arts and Crafts by welding. It gave very little information about which welder might be best and then a bunch of old outdated projects. I found this book mostly usless. ... Read more
