5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP official study guide - the best test prep resource
If you plan to take CLEP tests to receive college credit for material you are already somewhat familiar with or can study on your own, this is THE book to use. With this book, I was able to earn over 54 semester credit hours in less than four months. These credits transferred directly to the college I was attending and I was able to complete my degree four semesters earlier than I would have otherwise. This book has study guides and sample tests for ALL of the CLEP tests available.

There are other CLEP review materials out there that cost more and don't cover as much ground. I tried them too and they were a waste of my time.

Bottom line: Stick with the study guide published by the people who writeand grade the CLEP examinations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Study Guide??? I don't think so.
This book calls its self a study guide, but it is really just a collection of pre tests. It can give you a quick and easy idea if you should put the money out to take a full test. After having tried 2 of the tests for the sections that I was thinking about taking the tests for, one made me feel like it was worth taking the test, and the other section made me feel like the money I spent on this book saved me from wasting money and time on taking the second test. As far as the Study guide part, the first 25 pages are the general guidelines for any type of test, relax, look for key words, etcetera. They then have lots of examination guides, one for each test, and an answer key. The only help they give you for each test, is to suggest that you study from a good college text, and check to see that the text covers all of the topics listed for that test. Is it worth buying? I think if you are considering taking more than one test, it is. P.S. If you're reading this, good luck on your tests.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better exam books out there
These official guides are never the best but are usually where people start on finding out about college exams. The best book I found can be downloaded off the getyourcollegedegree website and not only gives information on CLEP but also how to get almost your entire degree using exams. I have accumulated over 63 credits myself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for
This book did not live up to my expectations.I felt it contained errors.I would have been good for it to include proofs/rules/logic applied for the answers. It was a clep guide, but I could not consider it very official.

2-0 out of 5 stars need more info
This book only contains sample test questions that are not on the test. There is no actual study information. You will have to purchase other study guides to go along. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review
Both the book and the CD are excellent sources of information and practice!I did very well on my Clep exam and ended of passing because you get to practice the tests that look and feel like the real Clep exam. The CD was my favorite part because not only are you timed, but they explain each answer after the test. After completion of the practice test it shows what score you have and where you need to improve.I highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to Clep College Algebra!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not the best book for college algebra
I took the test today and I realized this book isnt that good. The tests in the book do not cover the real CLEP exam. In the exam,I found a lot of problems I dont know . I passed the exam with 54/80. It doesnt look good, but I passed it!!.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
The book is handy for last minute algebra prep. I passed. Although there are some wrong solutions to some problems, but mostly it is helpful since it has 2 sample test with solutions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what you need for the clep exam
I studied this book and confidently can say I have learned almost everything it covered. I got a 90% on the practice test so I was confident. However when I took the real one I realized how many problems this book didn't cover. Many graphs and function, almost half of the test is about those. I would say the book helps you about 60% of the test material, but then again that could be many different type. At least thats what happened to my test. I passed with a 65, but just because I had previous knowledge. If you don't this book won't be enough to pass the clep. Hope I helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Prep Book
This book is excellent. It will provide you with the practice that you will need on the exam. The book covers nearly all of the questions that are on the exam and provides good explanations about the answers.Make sure that you will have sufficient knowledge of algebra before attempting this exam. This book will get you ready but it won't teach you everything. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars passed clep with minimal studying
I bought the Clep Introductory Sociology, studied for 5 days after I got home from my job, and passed the CLEP on the first try.Granted my score wasn't as high as I would have liked, but I passed it.There was a lot of stuff on the actual exam that wasn't in the CLEP book though.I kind of had to wing it a little.I would recommend the book to anyone out there, and if you study more than I did, you'll pass it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CLEP Book is the Intro to Psych Bible
First, let me explain why I needed to pass the exam in the first place. I am an accounting major and the requirement in many states to become CPA certified is to have 150 credit hours. Instead of taking classes after I graduated, I decided to take CLEP exams as a cheaper, more efficient way of getting 150 hours. After all, it is about $33 a credit through CLEP.

I had ABSOLUTELY ZERO knowledge of psychology before I read this book. Over a 4 week period I read this book concurrently with my regular course load. Since the book only takes about 30-45 minutes to read through it, I read it about 5-6 times before taking the exam. I will agree with everyone else though that the real usefulness of the book lies in the practice exams and the answers to each practice question. I did not use anything else to study except this book (again with no psychology experience).

Were there questions on the exam where I had to make a complete guess? Of course (probably around 15-20), but I feel as though the book still helped me in making good guesses. In the end, I received a solid 64 and since you get a pass/fail grade on your transcript anyway why does it matter if you score any higher?

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for test prep.
It covers the essentials on the test. The best part is the practice test. Got me pass the test mostly because of the answers key from the practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not complete
I bought this for my son to CLEP psychology. He had no previous knowledge of the subject and spent 10-12 hours reading the book and taking the practice tests. He passed the CLEP with a 56 but told me that there were many questions on the test that were not covered by the materials in the book. The history of psychology and the various founders and schools of thought/treatment in particular were questioned in more depth on the actual CLEP test than in the book or practice tests. I would still recommend this product.I also recommend that you make sure you buy the version with the CD which contains two timed practice tests in actual CLEP test format.Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed with a 68
I have no psychology experience. This book is just a really well written book.Just get it down really good and you will pass.I supplemented it with the CliffsAP book on "Psychology" (ISBN:0764573160). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars REA is always good review material, a great reference for this test.
As any CLEP, this book does not cover everything you will see in this exam. However, if you are good at tests, this is the book you need.I studied for 4 hours (read the material and did the first practice test. Then did a the practice test in the Offical CLEP Study Guide 17th Edition) and then took the test.I scored a 62 without using any other source for studying.I'm not suggesting the short study times I usually use, be your own judge and know your own abilities, but this book will help you pass this test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
Took this test and history 1 in 2 weeks - used the guides for both tests. these books covered most of the stuff. the hardest thing was remembering what the ammendments were. all in all an easy test with the aid of this clep guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed the CLEP using this test prep
I am very pleased with the materials found in this book. Although REA cannot anticipate what questions may asked on the actual CLEP exam, the explanation why the various choices of answers are correct or incorrect gave me enough background to pass the CLEP exam yesterday. Thanks for great tool !!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars REA CLEP History Guide Needs Improvement!!
The REA CLEP History of the US I study guide is in need of improvement and/or revision! The format of the book and the accompanying CD-ROM is
very usable...but the problem is that the information in it has little to
nothing to do with the real exam that was taken yesterday. The actual exam results were 20 points less than I scored on each of the 3 practice exams in the book. These practice exams and explanations gave a false
sense of readiness. I wish I would have used the actual study materials from the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). When I called REA about the difference between the study guide's practice exams and the actual exam....they said I should write a review online? So, I am alerting people to use other study materials than this REA study guide (published in 2006).It resulted in wasted time and money for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time
Despite the glowing reviews from others, this book was of little or no value in preparing for the CLEP exam. The format of the questions was not the same (the study guide had zero long quotations to read and answer questions about, but the real exam had many) and the material covered was not remotely distributed the same way. The bulk of the material covered in the study guide was mentioned little or not at all on the exam; the exam contained many many many questions about things that were mentioned little or not at all in the book. Perhaps the CLEP test people have moved into a new mode to outsmart the study guide publishers, but whatever the reason, the study guide will not prepare you to pass this exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP for freshman college composition (REA)
Excellent. I used the CD only. I took eachCD practice test once and past without difficulty. English is my weakest subject.CLEP Freshman College Composition (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP Exam (Test Preps)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start
I found this book to be very helpful but not enough by itself. The cd alone makes the book worth buying though. The book assumes that you remember grammar terminolgy.Since it had been over 20 years since I had taken an English class I did not remember the terminology.I supplemented with English Grammar for Dummies. That book was very helpful.I also researched bibliographies. Here's a good site: [...]noMenuRequest.The test was harder than I expected.I almost ran out of time. There was more reading and analyzing of writing and poetry than I expected. All in all, I studied for three solid days (probably 25 hours total) and got a 66.That was enough to test me out of two English classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars It really did help.
The REA book helped a lot with preparing for the CLEP exam. The actual CLEP exam was much different from the practice exams in REA's book.It would help the study process if REA updated the three practice exams in the book, and included all three of those exams on the accompanying CD, instead of only the first two exams. An earlier reviewer pointed out that there were some errors in the REA book.I noted the same errors and found that there were several additional errors throughout the book. The CLEP book would benefit a lot from being proofread and from having the errors corrected.Overall, it is my opinion that the REA book is very helpful with passing the CLEP exam, and I highly recommend purchasing the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Freshman College Composition (REA)
The book had much of the information needed for the actual test.Having a CD with practice tests was GREAT and helped to practice format and pacing of time!Explanations of information was also very beneficial.I was able to supplement my area of weakness as revealed by using the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great for CLEP prep
This book is OK, but not nearly as good as the other REA CLEP Prep books. The authors did something odd in this one - it's as if they were writing it as a study guide or to accompany a class. There were many references to "according to your professor's specifications" and "professors ... will demand."Who cares about professors?!!!I'm studying for an exam, not trying to do better in a class.

The information provided is not very specific either. Most items are covered in general terms and will need to be researched elsewhere to get the specifics.

The computerized tests do not completely match up to the ones in the book, so if you use both as a reference this becomes more time consuming.

There were also many typos (i.e. p. 50 "a student may writes a paper" and p. 51 "the next section ... usually discusses the extant of published knowledge").This is unacceptable in a book that is supposed to be sharpening your English/grammar skills.

I supplemented with Grammar for Dummies (good book) and also looked on the internet for rules of citing references.

Scored a 75 on the CLEP, mostly due to a strong background in this subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Prep Companion Material
Excellent companion material to the official CLEP guide. Dteailed explainations to practice problems - written in "mini" text book format covering the subject matter and not only test questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars I passed
This is the only material I studied.Consistently for a month I dedicated about 2 hours per day.It paid off in that I passed the College Math Clep...

4-0 out of 5 stars A real lifesaver!
I just passed my College Mathematics CLEP test and I owe it all to this study guide. I'm not kidding; at this point I feel like composing epic love poetry to the greatness that is the Review for the CLEP General Mathematics Examination!

I originally bought the official study guide from the CLEP organization, but that was useless other than to show me just how lacking my math skills were. It was essentially a practice test with no instructional material. This guide, however, shows you exactly how to solve each kind of problem in a straightforward manner. It doesn't just show you the right answers; it tells you why they are the right answers and shows you how to get there.

I spent roughly 2 hours each weeknight studying this guide, and my college mathematics skills went from almost nonexistent to CLEP-worthy in about a month. Without this guide, I would have had to waste a lot more time and money attending classes. With it (and some serious studying), I was able to knock out 6 credits in one shot.

Unless you're coming straight out of high school and excelled in algebra, this study guide is a must-have for preparing for the College Mathematics CLEP test. You'll probably never use your newfound mathematics knowledge ever again, but I suppose that's beside the point!

NOTE: I would have given this guide a 5-star rating, but there was one area of the CLEP test that it completely overlooked. It made no mention of basic geometry, and there were a handful of questions on the test that required knowledge of geometric formulas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I recently used this book to study for the College Mathematics test- since a college math course was all I needed to receive my associate's degree. I took the test on April 12th and was able to pass with no problem.Should have bought this book a long time ago. The best part of the book was the review for probability and combination problems since I did see a lot of those on the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works.
I suck at math.It may be a fear or genuine problem, I don't know.

I got this study guide so I could get the 6 math credits I needed to graduate college.

I read and studied everything in this book cover to cover 3 times and I took every test in this book 3 times as well.I used this book as sole preparation for my CLEP test.I beat this book to death and probably spent 30 hours reading or testing myself.I couldn't afford to fail since I had to get the 6 credits and my other options were algebra or business math... which were likely just as difficult.

I passed the CLEP test with flying colors.Much room to spare. To be honest, HARDLY ANY of the questions matched what I read, in fact, they were INCREDIBLY different and I was scared... but this book gave me the basic logic I needed to solve the problems.

Get the book, read it and study it exhaustively and you'll pass.Get the book, spend a couple hours on it, and you'll fail... unless you already know all kinds of math. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Software is Windows ONLY compatible
I carefully scanned the product description and nowhere does it say that the CD-Rom is Windows ONLY! Forget about using it if you have a MAC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Biology Overview
The CLEP Biology prep book gave a good general summary of the topics covered. It does not go in-depth, but it is a great review.I highly recommend getting the $10 CLEP Biology Exam Guide from the official CLEP website - it gives great examples of actual test questions and outlines the topics included on the test.I studied mostly with the REA CLEP Biology book and reviewed a few subjects in the Cambell college level Biology text...my score was a 74 (which is consistent with my practice test scores). Not a bad study guide for the price!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't use this unless you guess real good....
This book was not helpful at all.The test was complete application of concepts, and this book contained nothing like it, and the practice tests are nothing like the real tests.I completely guessed on at least 85% of the test, and by the grace of God got a passing score of 54!!Definitely look for something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clep Biology
This is my 6th clep test and I have passed all my previous Clep tests, but by far biology was the hardest. This book alone will not help you get a passing score unless you have a strong background in Science it's a great suppliment. An old college textbook as a extra study tool should help you pass.I like REA Clep guides and have used them for my western civ cleps this one needs a few more details but a good suppliment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quite prepared
I bought this and studied for 2 weeks.Took test, got a 50...the bare minimum to pass. The test was alot harder than the book. The book only prepared me for 10% of the test.I completely guessed on everything else.My suggestion is to find another resource. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CLEP General Exams 17 Full-Length Practice Exams
I recently took the Humanities CLEP exam. I used the REA CLEP general exams manual to study, review, and practice test exams to prepare for the exam. I found less then 10 questions on the exam, (out of 140) which were even close to the questions and answers in this REA test manual.

Needless to say, I didn't pass the exam. I got close ..score 46, but needed 50. I highly recommend using the CLEP OFFICIAL test manual for your primary test preparation. I am going to call REA and advise them their test manual is not worth using for the Humanities exam. I spent $30 for this manual plus $60 for the exam and $15 for the
Testing center; $105 spent, and nothing to show for it. I hope this helps others

2-0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN MOST BOOKS
THIS BOOK IS GOOD FOR GETTING A GENERAL IDEA OF HOW THE TEST IS ADMINISTERED, AND THE REVIEW QUESTIONS WERE DISCUSSED IN GOOD DETAIL, BUT WHEN I TOOK THE TEST, THERE WAS MAYBE A HANDFUL OF QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY PERTAINED TO TO THE REAL TEST.NOT A GOOD BOOK FOR REVIEW, BUT GOOD TO GET AN IDEA AS TO HOW HARD THE TEST IS GOING TO BE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Supplement to Official CLEP Study Guide
This is a good supplement to the Official CLEP STUDY GUIDE. Can't remember who I purchased it from but it was wonderfully priced too.

2-0 out of 5 stars CD test scores inaccurate
The CD was only helpful as a test-taking practice tool. The scores were inaccurate and therefore gave a false indication of the overall performance. Use the book to review test results as this is the only way you will know how you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars REA's prep books are excellent!
I enjoyed learning from this Edition. Every exam question is answered with detailed explanations, not just an answer. I found REA's book was a better value than the others, and more complete in detail....I will look for REA the next time I need help! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair But Full of Errors
I got this book as a study guide to use along side personal lessons I was taking to prepare for the test. Both my professor and I found numerous mistakes in the grammer in both the written and spoken parts of the test, as well as several mistakes in the prep areas. Also, the person who wrote this book is clearly not a native spanish speaker, for in many places they use idioms that are very american, and its clear that their english grammer peeks on more than one occasion.

None the less, the book wasn't entirely usless, it did help. I wouldn't call it the BEST review for the test, but it atleast does provide some clue as to what the test will be like.

If you can find another book for the same price that comes with audio, get it instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good source for study. Very close to the real tests.
I tested for the 12 credit exam and passed with a very high score (had to in order toget the 12 credits).
The material was very close to the actual test. Some of the pronunciation quizzes had a harsh accent, but it wasn't a problem to understand the conversations. It was very useful to practice with the preparation tests that came in the CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent review source!
This page says that the review guide was published in 1998; however, the one I recieved from Amazon was copyright 2003 and printed in 2006.

That said, this is an excellent source for reviewing for the test.It has three practice tests, with comprehensive explanations for EVERY correct and incorrect answer for each of the tests. It is also very helpful to listen to the included cds--it gives you a fairly accurate feel of how the real CLEP test will be.

The beginning of the book goes through every part of basic Spanish--everything from pronunciations to verb conjugation.Though it doesn't have the glitzy pictures of my college textbook (there are no pictures, actually), I feel that it is better organized and easier to follow. If you really spend the recommended time with this resource, I believe that passing the CLEP exam will not be really difficult.I passed the exam--but I also used (like I said earlier) a college textbook to augment my studies.Even so, the practice tests and accompanying explanations are very helpful. If anything, the CLEP exam I took seemed easier than the practice exams in this guide.

Highly recommended.I also recommend "501 Spanish Verbs"--that was a good guide for learning verb conjugation.

*I would like to note that the included cds that I received were mis-labeled, meaning that cd A is really cd B and vice-versa.Obviously not a big deal, just a little bothersome at first. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (9)

2-0 out of 5 stars Merely skims the surface.
CLEP is one of the best ideas ever and I have enjoyed the freedom that the tests provide. At present I have taken 14 CLEP exams, never scored lower than a 68, made one 80, and average around 74 (the best you can do is 80, the worst is 20).I don't say that to impress you, only to tell you that I have quite a bit of experience in studying for CLEP exams.I usually find the REA test preps very helpful and until this one I hadn't found one that I didn't like. However, I found this one to be fairly useless in preparing for the humanities exam.

The book contains sections on literature, art (including architecture and sculpture), drama, dance, music, and film.Unfortunately, none of these are exhaustive and no pictures are present which makes the art section practically useless except as a bibliography of names to know. The literature section focused only on reading comprehension and literary terms, no mention being made of major works, authors, or movements, all of which are important as part of the test.Basically the entire book (with the exception of the literature section), serves simply as a list of names to know.It is up to you to find out more about them. The only valuable part about this book is the tests it contains (which are, I think, much harder than the real thing). While they tend to be much more nit picky than the actual CLEP questions, they will give you a feel for what to focus on and what kinds of questions you may be asked. The book may be worth purchasing for that reason alone, although you would spend your money better by buying the Official CLEP Study Guide (invaluable if you plan on taking any CLEP tests).

So how do you study for this exam?I went to a used book store near a local college and bought a textbook for intro to humanities.I skimmed it, highlighting key names, works, authors, etc. It provided pictures of art work and some brief descriptions of literary works as well. [...]After getting a good grasp of these details, I took the CLEP practice test in the official book and then took the actual test. While it is not the "quick" way, it took me four weeks and got me a 78 on a six credit hour test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, unreliable software
As a returning student 18 years out of the game, I wanted to get off to a big start in a subject area where I already felt pretty comfortable. I picked the CLEP Humanities because it would get me 6 hours of credit for knowledge I already possessed. After getting 61/70 correct on the College Board's "official" practice exam, I scheduled a testing date.

Then I got cold feet, decided a little preparation couldn't hurt, and ordered this book. The good reviews here were encouraging, and the "Testware" software put REA above the rest for me.

The good: The book contains concise yet comprehensive reviews of all the major subject areas covered on the test. (I thought I was pretty savvy, but I still learned a lot.) Each chapter ends with a drill on the subject matter -- including material that wasn't covered. If you learn all the material presented, you're sure to pass the test. There are three complete practice tests, all of which turned out to be much harder than the actual exam. I found the heightened difficulty level to be a plus: Better to not get too cocky and to be a little better prepared than necessary than to not be prepared enough. (If you're *that* close to the pass/fail line, maybe you need to just take the courses.)

The back of the book contains nice glossaries of (1) important literary figures by period and (2) literary terms. There's also a conventional subject index.

The not so good: Testware is a good idea executed badly. I used it to take the first practice test and it scored me with 55 correct answers out of 140. This was a little discouraging, as I thought I'd done better. As I reviewed the correct answers and explanations, I soon found 2 questions I was sure I had given the correct answers to that Testware said I answered incorrectly. Then I *knew* there was a glitch when a question I had answered incorrectly was scored as correct.

This was all within the first 27 questions, so I stopped right there and re-did the first test, duplicating my answers from before. This time, I created an Excel spreadsheet, entering first my answers and then the correct answers from the key. My actual number of correct answers on test 1 was 78, not 55 -- more in line with how I felt I had done. I didn't use Testware to take the second practice test, but stuck to my spreadsheet method for it and test 3 (which is only offered in the book, anyway).

I was disappointed that the book didn't have much in the way of timelines, and much key information was "buried" in the text such that I felt the continuous urge to highlight in the book, which I didn't want to do because I intended to sell it when I was finished. Glossaries on artists, artistic movements, musical terms, and architects would have been nice but were absent.

Bottom line: REA's CLEP Humanities book makes an excellent component to your test preparation. The software might be helpful in acclimating yourself to computerized testing if, like me, you've never done it before. Just don't rely on the software to score you correctly. For added security, I recommend using a second preparatory book. Toward the end of my studying, I picked up a 2005 copy of Kaplan's CLEP general exam book, which filled in some gaps for me. It also contains practice tests, and, unlike REA's book, also includes book recommendations for independent study. (But it's not as thorough for review purposes.)

I just took the test today. I scored 78/80. I would likely have passed without studying at all, but it was worth the extra time and money to go in feeling uber-prepared, and to earn a score that will translate to a grade of A.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overkill
I actually disagree with all of the other reviews -- this book was completely out of line. The REA made me think I would fail while the test was down right easy. The fact of the matter is that the Humanities CLEP does require a wide knowledge base with a basic understanding of art, musical periods, and literature. But the emphasis is on BASIC. For instance, the REA book went into DEPTH about how music is structured, the tone, beats, etc. The test, on the other hand, asked about composers, or opera singers (don't freak out, you could eliminate all the wrong answers by knowing poets, actresses, and novelists) but nothing on how music was structured. Also, the REA was unbalanced: certain sections were longer than others and the section on philosophy was basically just a list of philosophers and barely enough on what they actually said, or who they were connected with. Just don't worth your money or time.

4-0 out of 5 stars I used this book the most to pass!
This was my first CLEP exam and I was a little intimidated.I borrowed a bunch of study guides from the library, including this one. This book soon became fundamental in my studies. Unlike the "CLEP Official Study Guide", it has FULL practice exams and explanations.A plus because I used the wrong answers to know were I needed to focus my studies. "Kaplan CLEP" is also a good guide for tests.Between the two guides there are plenty of practice exams.

It is a very challenging test due to the multiple subject matters.Further studying is crucial.I made timelines for each of the following: literature, visual art, architecture, philosophy and music. Then I cross referenced them with each other and became acquainted with the artist/philosopher and the associated movements in each period. If I didn't know something, I looked it up on [...] or [...].I studied for a month and got a 71 out of the 80 maximum points.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me pass
Very good book that helped me pass.I do recommend looking at as many humanities practice exams as you can, getting other study guides, and study the important highlighter stuff online and in books. But this book really gives you an idea of what questions might pop up.This book goes into a lot of detail. Some of the questions may seem rough, just keep on taking the practice tests and a lot of the information will seep into your sub-conscious.Also study online, wikipedia is awesome for any information.I also got a few clep study guides from the library."Cracking the clep" is another good book because it tells you what books to study from art, music, poetry, and how to understand this stuff. The Peterson's book "Clep Success"(got from the library) has some questions that will come up on the test, and I went to barnes and nobles and checked out the official collegeboard clep tests, just sat in the store and learned there for a while, didn't buy it cause i'm cheap.Basically, take as many practice tests as you can and study all the books outlined in "Cracking the clep".And you'll pass.I got a 61 and I didn't really have any prior knowledge to a lot of this material.Study, study, study, and you'll pass. And don't get discouraged. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I passed, but review is rough.
I normally love REA review books but this author is really hard to comprehend. I used other notes available on the internet for free to help study for this CLEP. I ended up passing but felt like studying for this test was just as much work as the class, and I believe it is the way this author teaches/writes.

It will help you pass, but don't plan on cramming for this one w/ this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book alone is all you need!
This is all I used to study for the Principles of Management CLEP test. I read through the book once, took both practice tests, and then read through the answer explanations for each test. Then I loosely paged through the book a second time and took some notes on what I though was important. I think taking the notes made it all come together. I took the test and got a 73. This book is great and all you will need to pass! I have used the REA books previously for History of the United States I and College Freshman Composition. I did fine on those tests but I had to supplement with other sources. This book is more complete and I was better prepared for this exam in less time. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the test!
I read this book once through.Took each of the practice tests. This is the only thing I used, and I passed the test. What more can be said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take this Exam!!!!
I've been in the military for a while now and a lot of the management concepts are very close to what I've learned. I advise anyone, especially GoArmyEd students, to CLEP this class. It's the easiest 3 credits you'll ever receive because you may know it already. There are some of the same concepts in management as PLDC, BNCOC, and other MOS schools, just different lingo. That's where this book came in for me. It helped me translate what I already knew into "civilian language." Passed the exam and now I don't have to spend 12 weeks in the Principles of Management class. Yay!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars clep principles of management

2-0 out of 5 stars You don't need the book
I don't claim to be a literature freak; my reading consists of Sports Illustrated. However, this CLEP was very easy.I did not study, didn't read anything, and scored a 70.It is more intimidating than anything, so the book might give you a better idea of what to expect, but don't worry about the actual exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars CLEP analyzing and Interpreting Literature
This completely prepared me for the exam.If you can pass the practice exams, then the actual exam will be no problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars strange one
took this test today after using only this book as prep - got a perfect score of 80 - so i guess it's pretty good.

the practice tests in the book are weird though - as recently as yesterday i got a mediocre passing grade on the final practice test in the book.while i was pretty sure i'd pass, i wasn't expecting a great score because of my performance on these practice tests.

bottom line: the real test, while being similar in structure and difficulty to these mockups, was of much higher quality and more thoroughly prepared.therefore, i encountered much less ambiguity/subjectivity in selecting the right answers - on the practice tests, i'd often get a question "wrong", and after reading their answer/explanation, i'd still disagree, feeling strongly that i was right.one question in particular blatantly showed the editors' shakiness regarding poetic meter.no such problems with the real test.

so, while i can't say i enjoyed using this book, i guess i recommend it; but if it seems weird and dampens your confidence, take heart because the real test, while challenging, is much clearer.good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP This - Excelsior Students!!
If you can read, a week with this book and some Petersons practice exams is an easy 6 credits!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mmmm...dont need a guide for this.
The book is way harder than the actual test. After reading reviews from other amazon people about the test i got lazy and didnt read the clep guide past the 2nd chapter. the only studying i did was 5 questions on practice test 1 and looking up what alliteration and onomotopeia meant.

the test takes long cause youre reading a bunch of stuff. the passages are a paragraph or two with a 2 or 3 being longer.

if you have ever taken freshman high school english (the highest I have taken) you'll be fine. i got a 65 or something around there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
I loved this book.I studied for about a week, and still passed with a 72.I felt like I was failing while taking the test, but to my suprise I passed. On the practice tests I was scoring around 52-57.I think that anyone who could pass the practice tests could pass the actual exam.I would pay a lot of attention to functionalism and conflict perspectives, and know all the sociologists and the theories in this book.I also took the peterson practice tests, and scored in the 50's. The most valuable part of this book are the three practice tests, and the detailed explanations (make sure you understand how the sociologists think). The review is not as helpful, but you should read it if you are not familiar with sociology.I loved this book, and if you study and learn the info in this book you will pass. You really only need this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!
There is enough information here to get the job done. My college requires a score of 59 and I passed with a 63. Know the material thoroughly and you should do fine as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Clarity, Look Elsewhere.
Grammar and structure of this book were rediculously rough and unrefined, making it more difficult to comprehend than it should have been. For most of my preparation, I have used a regular Sociology textbook, using this only as a guideline to construct a more reader-friendly study guide. An absolute pain to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Money
This Clep Guide is on the money. I have taken 7 Cleps so far with 6 6 REA guides, this one is so far the best in actually preparing you for what is ecpected. I studied with the Collegeboard.com test as well, but it was the same material in the REA guide. I highly reccomend this guide. 70 out of 80 with one week of study. Good Luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, this book will help
I used this book for preperation for this test and found it very helpful.Like any CLEP though not everything on the test will be found in this book.Use your own judgement and test taking ability as your guide.I starting studying the night before the test.I spent a total of 5 hours on the material and the first two practice tests in the back of the book.I also referenced the Official CLEP Study guide and scored a 66 on this test. This is good material and can help you pass this test.Good luck. ...
