5-0 out of 5 stars Very good seller
After I bought the product I realize I don't have to take the test, any way I review the book and it looks OK. in content

5-0 out of 5 stars REA CLEP College Algebra
The book came in the mail early and in perfect condition. It came with a CD that is still sealed and it is clear that the book is brand new.Great doing business with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly worth it!
I highly recommend this book for those taking the College Algebra. I scored a B after using this book for two weeks - and it wasn't on a daily basis.

1-0 out of 5 stars Filled With Typos and Leaves Out Steps
I purchased this book because it seems like the best source to prepare for the College Algebra CLEP test. You will need more study material to pass the actual CLEP test.

This book contains many typos, which are confusing, to say the least. Also, the explanation sections for each provided test leave out important steps that lead to the answer. In basic terms, the language and process goes thusly: This gives you this and then you get this which equals this (whatever the answer may be). You have to figure out the missing steps. So, you will need to have a strong understanding of algebra to fill in the missing steps.

There is a Math Review section, but it is not self-explanatory at all. Again, you'll need some previous algebra knowledge to learn the material. This section contains a lot of the typos. Equal signs are left out; numbers are transposed; wrong numbers are used in some equations.

This book was not proofread well and it is not a reliable source to prepare anyone for the College Algebra CLEP test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clep College Credit in College Algebra
This is an excellent reference for the College Algebra
Clep Examination. The volume explains what is needed
to pass the exam along with classic test taking
techniques. This comes from my personal experience in
teaching College Algebra.

Candidates must be thoroughly familiar with the following
areas:

o laws of algebra and numbering systems
o complex numbers, exponents, radicals and scientific
notation
o polynomials, equations, inequalities, absolute values
o quadratic functions

Candidates should have some familiarity with a scientific
calculator. i.e. logs, exponents, squares, roots etc.

Successful candidates should work all 3 exams in the booklet.
The approach toward problem solving and the math review
are invaluable for candidates seeking to learn the material
comprehensively. The volume is an excellent value for the
price charged. Taking and passing the CLEP exam in College
Algebra could be worth thousands of dollars for entering
College Freshmen (people).

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a 78 Using only this Book
I just took the Introductory Psychology CLEP exam this weekend and got a 78 out of 80. This was my first CLEP exam and I only used this book to prepare for the exam. Professor Sharpsteen did a great job with this book. I recommend that you take both practice exams the book provides, look at the rationales for all the answers, even the questions you got right. Additionally, the glossary provides more important information. A great book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, and all you'll need to pass
I scored 69/80 after reading only this book.I read it 4 times over the course of 3 weeks, then passed the exam. There were some questions on topics that I'm sure were not in this book, but not enough to keep me from passing (easily)!Good luck on your own exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Intro Psych
This CLEP book hardly helps with the test.I barely passed the test (59 out of 50), even after studying in depth for over three weeks and using the practice tests provided. There were questions on the test referencing items that were not listed in this book. After this, I am unsure about using another CLEP book in order to test out of a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need
This is the only review book/software I used to study for the CLEP Psychology exam. The book is concise enough that you can sit down and read it in just a few hours, yet goes in depth enough to cover almost all of the subjects that you will see on the exam. I personally took the 1st "pre-exam" on the software, then read through the entire book once, then took the 2nd "post-exam", and then took the test. I scored a 69/80 and only needed a 50 to pass!! The tests on the software I thought were harder than the actual exam.

I did come into this with some background knowledge on psychology, most from a human anatomy and physiology course where I learned about the nervous system, but that's about it.

If you use this correctly, I believe this is the only study material you'll need to pass the test. To further prove my point, i only really started studying a couple days before the exam! One thing you want to make sure to do also is to go over the in-depth answers to the practice tests, and learn all the terms given as answers, not just the correct one.

The material is still very relevant to what is on the test, and you should feel confident going into it. Highly, highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful prep for clep!
Awesome study prep for clep. I aced the test using this book alone. Disc is helpful. Only four stars b/ c there were some questions on the test not covered at all in this book, but I guess that is to be expected. You can ace this test if you really know this book. I scored 72. Out of 80. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market
I have REA's CLEP College Mathemmatics, the Barron's CLEP 10th Edition Guide as well as the Princeton Review's 4th Edition Cracking the CLEP and have to say if there is only one book to own it is this one; the REA book. It seems to be the most thorough out of all three I listed. Second I would go with the Princeton Review but only because of the explanations that it provides are really good but it is vague in covering all the topics that you do actually need to practice for this CLEP exam. The Barron's book is great to have more questions to practice on. But overall the REA had the most detailed information in the book but it happens to be one of the most expensive.

Here is the deal: You don't need the CD's since all the questions are included in the book that are on the CD, however if you are going to buy a book that is used you may want to have the CD so you can ensure that when you take the practice exams you aren't looking at a page that someone made a mark in the book as to what the correct answer is. Or it kind of defeats the purpose.

My recommendation if you are preparing for this exam: I am not the best at math under pressure, meaning when you are being timed and only have 90 minutes to answer 60 questions. Plus, my last math class was 20 years ago in high school! Some questions are easy but most take more than a minute and a half and that is all you get technically if you (pun intended) do the math. I would buy all three books just so you have a bunch of practice questions and the other books used are really cheap...like under a dollar or two!

REA is the book to buy if you want to pass...I did just yesterday as a matter of fact and I couldn't be happier.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
Very basic and quick review of the topics, ideal for someone who has the knowledge, but needs to refresh it. The bottom line is: there are many better on-line resources and the book is not worth its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to CELPing College Math
Actually purchased this book for my daughter as she wants to shorten her school time to become a Dental Hygienist in three years instead of four. This book helped her prepare for the Math CLEP test.I would highly recommend it to any student interested in this type of program.I only wish I had known about the CLEP test when I went to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Received this book and studied it cover to cover for one week.Took the exam and passed without a problem. This book covered every topic encountered on the actual exam.I had not taken a math class in over 15 years. Now, I was good at math when I was in school...but knew I needed some serious refreshing before taking this test. This book did it for me!The CD is like the real exam and gives excellent practice for the big test.I recommend this book with hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Will Need!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND REA FOR CLEPS! I received almost a perfect score using just this book! And I only studied for two weeks! I plan on using REA for biology next month. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed the test!
I bought this book and studied according to the plan in the book. I took the sample tests 3 times each. I passed the test with a high B by studying only this book. I did also buy the official collegeboard book and took the sample test in there. I think if anyone has a little background in psychology and studies this book thoroughly, they will pass the test. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars good practice, helps get used to the format
I didn't do as well on the real test as I did on their practice tests, but I still passed by a decent margin & it gave me confidence that I'd be _fine_ with the real thing. Having the CD with practice tests was probably THE most valuable thing about this method of test prep.

The review material is only about half the book - paper/pencil tests take up the rest, so it's nowhere near as overwhelming as it looks. I studied the sections in order of what % of test questions were taken from that material (see pg. 6). Read a section, take a break, read another, take a break. Do an hour or two a day for a couple weeks, interspersed with the CD tests, and you'll do fine on the real thing.

When reviewing the CD tests, be SURE to take advantage of the "why" function!! This not only shows you the right answer, but explains the reasoning for it. The morning of my test, I reviewed the 4 most important sections, then did one last run at a CD test.

I wish someone would have told me about this in high school! It saved me money & time compared to even taking the class at a 2-year college.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have 2 months minimum to study
Make sure you have time to use this guide properly - otherwise do not waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP
Book arrived on time and condition stated by seller. Book very helpful and a quick read for preparation for CLEP exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Study this book to pass the CLEP!!
I have to have Human Growth and Development, as a prerequisite for my school. I studied this book exclusively for one week and just took the exam today. 73/80= A! I only needed a 50, so I now no longer need to take this course! The exam is much easier than the book. The right answer just kind of pops out, with the rest obviously being wrong answers. I read and reread the book very thoroughly and don't think you need any other study guide to pass the CLEP with flying colors! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help!
I was able to study this resource and felt very comfortable taking the test.I not only learned a lot but I scored a 66/80 on the test!Definitely worth the money.Plus, the tests on the CD are very useful!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you need!
If you going to purchase only one book to study for a CLEP exam, this is the book to have!I received this book on Monday - I reveiw the material in the book Monday night and Tuesday I took the practice tests (wich are included on the CD).I reviewed the answers from the practice test that I got wrong with the explanations in the book.Wednesday morning I took the actual CLEP test and had no problem passing the test. The practice tests on the CD are the key to passing the CLEP test.

2-0 out of 5 stars The CD does not work
I should start with the disclaimer that I have not actually taken the CLEP test yet, however, I am frustrated with this purchase. I read the review in the book and then took Practice Test 1 on the CD. When I reviewed the answers I got correct and incorrect, they were not accurate. I know the score the CD told me (though passing) is not accurate as the answers it says I chose I know are inaccurate. In addition, the CD does not match the book, so it makes it difficult to analyze your answers. In theory this is a great idea, however, the CD does not work correctly. I would not purchase this for the CD. The review was an easy read and probably gave some good information in terms of vocabulary. The written practice test was also helpful, especially with the explainations. But the CD DID NOT work accurately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but it has its downfalls
I purchased this book about a month before my exam and read it here and there... and then crammed the week before the test. While the material was helpful, the practice exams and the explanations were most helpful.

The problem with the book is that you can't really STUDY how to analyze literatute, but what you can study are literary terms and devices... and most of the terms are not covered in the review, but rather in the answer explanations.

I ended up passing without a problem, but make sure you read your answer explanations because that's where the bulk of the information is. (e.g. homile-- not in the text, but it's a answer choice on one of the practice exams... and the definition is in the explanation, not in the review where it should be.

All in all, buy the book to take the practice exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't just pass--I kicked its behind!
First disclaimer: I am pretty well read. That said, this book and accompanying CD test software, was all I used to study for the CLEP.

The test questions were very representative of the type of readings and questions on the actual exam. You can mark questions so you can go back and study those more. You can also review your practice tests to see the correct answers with explanations.

The book itself is useful. Lots of explanation on literary terminology, which is very important.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough to pass.
The book does a fairly good job of covering about 70% of the exam content, however I saw many questions on the exam that weren't addressed at all in the book.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with absolutely no background in biology, unless that person is a prodigious memorizer, whereupon they could probably pass the test. This is an adequate review for someone with a general background. My last biology class was AP Biology 13 years ago, and reading through this book was enough to score an A on the exam with the help of much testing experience (i.e. process of elimination).

My recommendation to supplement this book would be specific study of molecular biology to include names of all the molecular components of DNA and associated processes of DNA replication, transcription, and protein synthesis which the book does not cover in detail at the molecular process level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
The purchase I made was just what I was looking for in great condition. Shipping was fast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Applying the knowledge is the key!
I took the CLEP biology last week and got a 72. I used this book and a 5 year old college biology text book to prepare.

The key to passing this exam is application. There are no questions where in you just recall the information. Nearly all the questions force you to apply the information to a situation.

This book was my primary source but the material here is just barely deep enough to be able to read the questions. You are not challenged by this book to apply the information. If you went through and memorized the book cover to cover but didn't fully understand you are most likely not ready to take the exam.

I do have a back ground in Human Anatomy (which has a small portion of overlap when it comes to cells and chemistry) and that was helpful with this exam. There are lab questions on this exam which are fairly tough and there is no information in REA's book regarding the lab portion. If you have no background in biology I strongly recommend you use a college text book!

If you insist on using the book alone I think it can be done but I recommend you give yourself a 12-15 point cushion. I.e. if you are scoring better than 65 (and you need a 50) on the REA's practice exams you may be ready for real exam.

I did this very gradually over the course of about 8 weeks.

The method I used to study was simple.

1. I read through the book once and took the first test. (which after taking the clep is clearly to easy).

2. read through the book again and then begin to ready the chapter summaries from the college text book.

3. took the other two exams (the last one is ONLY in the book not on the CD) as well as answer the questions at the end of each chapter looking up the answers to the ones I didn't know.

4. On the college board website there is a list of the material covered and it is a great representation of what is on the exam. If you understand the basics of every thing on that list, and you are passing the REA's exams you will be fine.

Every thing on the list seemed to be treated equally... in other words I didn't notice any one topic being covered significantly more than any other thing on that list. This list (from CLEP's office site) was my main guide for me deciding when I was ready to take the test.

Please note I didn't read the entire biology text book (it is huge) I only read the chapter summaries to make sure I get the main points and could answer most of the questions at the end of each chapter.

Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book covers little
I took the Biology Clep test yesterday and I passed it with a 68. However, most of the questions on the exam were not covered in the review. I actually wasn't for sure whether I passed or not. I attribute my higher score to luck and common sense but not to this book. The test was definitely harder than I expected and I studied a lot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I would have hoped for...
I made the mistake of using this book exclusively for my test preparation. After studying for months and knowing the book almost backwards and forwards, I took the test and failed.I was surprised to find that out of all of the test questions I could only answer about fifteen of them. The other questions were foreign to me, and some of them even mentioned things I'd never heard of.This book is okay, but don't do like I did and only use it for test preparation.Be sure to get other study guides as well. ... I'm the father and my son, 18, in just a few months is already a 2nd semester freshman. Hopefully by Christmas he'll be a sophmore or better. These books and the tools with CollegePlus are really helpful. We plan on having Bachelor degree wrapped up in 24 months or less and then my son will go to a traditional college for some more specific classes for what he wants to do - we just didn't want to waste a lot of $$$ on traditional college classes and would rather he take this route, which so far is doing very good. We also plan on starting my 10th grader this year on this while he is attending normal high school. We are skipping the AP stuff and just doing this. Much better value in time and $$$. If you need more info or are a parent that would like to chat about it - leegaupp at hotmail dot net.

4-0 out of 5 stars I passed
Regardless of the book's flaws, I passed the CLEP test. I studied for about 10 hours, focusing on the 3 practice exams. I first did the exams with explanations turned on, and then re-took them with explanations turned off. I noted which questions I got wrong for further study. As other reviewers noted, 3-4 of the questions have wrong answers: the explanations indicate a different answer than what is scored as "correct."

During the actual test I felt that I was guessing a lot and didn't think I'd pass. I think one skill that helped me was practice analyzing multiple choice questions and increasing my chance of a correct guess through the process of elimination (e.g., four of the answers somehow group together, and one of them sticks out as not belonging).

Considering that I only spent a week preparing for the test, I'm very satisfied with my passing score and not having to take a semester-long class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point for studying for the CLEP - History of the United States I exam
I purchased this book a few weeks ago and used it to help guide my CLEP studies.

After taking the exam today, I can definitely say that you have to know a lot about a lot.

Regarding this book --

The good: The newest edition date is 2008. It does a pretty good job of covering the areas in which you'll be tested on and gives you a starting point to see where you need to focus.

The specific "could be better" comment: It does not cover the antebellum era to the depth you need to know on the exam.

The previous reviewers are correct. You NEED to know the antebellum era like the back of your hand in order to pass this exam. I started with this book, used Wikipedia, a college US history textbook, and [...] to help focus in on the details.

My college's US History textbook -- American Stories: A History of the United States, Volume I (ISBN10: 0205572693).

Yes, I passed with a 59. With working full-time and trying to study for the CLEP, a pass is a pass!

Best of luck to you if you are studying for the CLEP History of the United States I exam. Put in the study time and you can pass, too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was extremely helpful. Especially the practice tests. The only study material I used for this test was this book, the collegeboard test, and wikipedia. I scored a 64. Worth the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, as a base but do A LOT of outside studying.
This book was very helpful, I just wish it were harder because the CLEP test for this was was more difficult than the book.I was getting 80 percent of the practice tests, yet on the real thing I got 5 points over the passing grade. Wish it had a CD Test too.

5-0 out of 5 stars so far so good
Book looks good and brand new with a wealth of information. I have not taken the test yet but I am hopeful this works!

4-0 out of 5 stars It can work...
This book is good for people who are unfamiliar with the CLEP American History topics. It is a good basis for study because it touches upon the main subjects included on the test.I was able to pass the test, but I supplimented my study with an online source that was much more comprehensive. The book does jump around so it is neccessary to either know the timeline of our history or study that separately. This book is definitely a good place to start, because it narrows the focus of what to study in order to be prepared for the CLEP.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to pass
If all you are looking to do is pass the CLEP test and get your units (which is all this book is designed for) then this is your book. The questions on my CLEP were very similar to the practice test, not word for word or anything but very similar.Sure, 10-15% of the questions were on material that in no way could be deduced from the text of this book, but you could not answer any of them and still pass.People who are looking for a complete representation of the test from 75 pages of review text are kidding them selves. The test covers a hundred and fourty five years for goodness sake.If all you are looking to do is pass then look no further. This is all I studied (read the review section twice and took each practice test) and I got a 60.

If you are looking for a all inclusive knowledge of US History II look elsewhere. But for the rest of us CLEP'ers this is a great book.

By the way, I dont understand when people say "this book sucks, but it is all I studied and I passed."What else do you want?

4-0 out of 5 stars I PASSED!!!
I just took the CLEP for US History Part II and I did pass after three days of studying. I think this book was helpful but I don't think I passed because of it. There were a lot of question who quotes which none are provided in the book. Also I thought the test would focus of the government, past presidents and their domestic and foreign policy which was not the case. The test in on US history everything: civil rights, tons of authors of articles and book, a lot about the progressive period. I have never written a review but I thought a recent review was necessary for this CLEP test and to help people in the future. I passed with a 56 which I thought was pretty good for not taking a history course in six years and have been studying nursing for the past three years. Good luck!! This book does give you a based foundation were I recommend you build on and go into detail. Also make sure you know dates!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation
Just passed the Principles of Marketing CLEP with a 66.Reviewed only this book for about 3 days, 2 hours a day.The review tests mimic the actual test questions extremely well.I have taken three CLEP tests so far, this was by far the easiest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enought to pass
I only used this book to prepare for the Marketing CLEP exam and I passed. (I also didn't have any background in marketing.) I got 70 out of 80. Not bad after studying only this book for a week and a half. If you know this book inside out and take all the practice tests you will do just fine! I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, could use pictures
I used this book, along with the Comex humanities book and the website run by Peterson's. Let me start by saying that this was my third CLEP, having already taken Biology and Western Civ II. I scored a 58 on the other two tests. With that being said, I used this book to study and got a 61. 50 is passing for the CLEP. I knew very little about the Humanities, and I give these materials full credit for getting me through the exam.

Using these books got me out of 3 classes, two of which involved a lot of writing. CLEP is worth it! On to the review:

Good things: This book is comprehensive. I read it, paying special attention to the words in bold. I knew nothing about Humanities, and I was worried about this test. I took the tests, and the ones on the website, and sure enough, my scores were the same as the practice tests.

Bad Things: There were no pictures in the text of the book, just in the paper practice tests. This was worrisome for me, as the CLEP for humanities shows you pictures of art and architecture, which you are required to identify. This book could use pictures. The other thing is that the cover of the book states that there are 3 full length practice exams, but the disk only has two. There are there text tests in the book, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty decent resource
I purchased this book a while ago, and I have to say the money was well worth it. The content is fairly organized and easy to follow. As with any CLEP, it is always best to use several resources. Personally, I have been using InstantCert.com for months, and have been really happy with it so far. I've passed 5 CLEPs, and it has been my primary source for study information. It's definitely worth checking out. They even have a money back guarantee in case you aren't satisfied with it!
As soon as you're registered, I would also highly recommend to use the forums for exam-specific feedback. Oh yeah, and you can use the coupon code "66026" to get $5 off your first month's access fee. Good luck to all my fellow CLEPsters out there!

3-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Humanities Reveiw
This is a good book for use as an outline for study, but should definitely be used in conjunction with further research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clep
This is a great book. If you have knowledge of the topics you should do ok. It is not for someone looking for the easy credit. I did this and it was brutal, I did pass. It would have been easir to take the regular class. If I had not been in the desert I would have choosen the class.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Natural Science
I highly recommend this book. I followed the study guidelines and passed the exam in 30 days. I have worked in the medical field for over 25 years and you forget specific details of basic biology, chemistry, evolution, etc. The information in this study guide is clear and concise and the practice exams give you detailed explanations for the answers; why one answer is right and the others are wrong. Money well spent.

1-0 out of 5 stars CD ROM was NOT included~
Cd Rom was not inlcuded and I was unable to contact the sender regarding this issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide.
This book is an excellent resource to use in preparation for the Natural Sciences CLEP test. It is a great way to review material that you might have learned years ago, but it would need to be supplemented with other books if you have never taken Biology, Chemistry, etc. The content in the book is very dense, no fluff. I studied this book for a couple weeks and passed the test yesterday with a score of 63. I am a highschool senior and have, in the past four years, taken Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. That being said, this book was all I needed to prepare me for the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get 6 College Credits
I used the Calihan REA book to prepare for the CLEP Natural Science exam, in which I scored a 72 with two weeks of intensive study. If you have some science knowledge the book is great on its own -- highly recommended. If you are more of a beginner, you may want some additional sources, such as Idiot's Guides, to go with it.
Bad news: the included testware wouldn't install on my PC, so I went without it. There doesn't seem to be a diskless version of the book. I originally ordered the diskless version from Amazon, under super saver shipping. Amazon later canceled my order ('disappeared it' without a word would be more accurate) when they withdrew the diskless version's page, so I had to pay shipping to get the more expensive version with testware that I couldn't use. So the 4 stars are for the book; Amazon gets minus stars on this order. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed in this book and especially with the software.Over half the book is practice test with answers, if you don't use the software I guess this would be ok.Of the three remaining chapters, one is about the test structure and strategy (worthwhile read); the second is an introduction to college composition (not a study guide).Only the third chapter, containing about 50 pages or 25% of the book, is an actual study guide. The study material is ok, but not great.

The software is another story. The UI is a kludge, the program is buggy, and tech support is non-responsive.There is a known issue with Windows XP and later that requires you to download and register a custom DLL.To make matters worse, the instructions they give are wrong.Good luck if you're not computer savvy.I could never get mine to print the results and have yet to receive a response from tech support. Also, there is no analysis of your results to help you focus study.Rather, you can manually review the explanations for each question in the test.

I did pass the test, but would not give much credit to this guide beyond familiarizing me with the format. If you want a quick check to see if you are ready for the test, this will help.If you don't pass the practice exam, I'd suggest taking the course rather than relying on this guide to help you study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Prep CLEP Review
My fifteen year old daughter used this CLEP book and passed with a 59; the college she is interested in attending required a 54.She felt that the "teaching notes" were very informative and and helped her focus on whatwould be on the test. She studied for three weeks. The greatest help was re-taking the exam after she had studied the incorrect answers. On the initial practice exams, she received a 52, 53, and 64.She improved greatly the second time around. We felt that these exams were representative of what she saw on the real test.Hope this helps!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK! Glad I had it! Passed with a 65 today! YAHOO!
This book was great and if I hadnt had the CD practice tests I never would have passes so handily. The test CDs help tremendously with learning the style of the tests, how to pace yourself, and the types of content to expect on the test.Every single thing in the test - except a few questions that were a little different - were in these practice tests. I passed with a 65 today - and you need a score of 50 to get credit. I will receive 6 college credits for spending the time to review these tests, and take the two practice tests AND will not have to bother taking English 101 and 102 at my school. Its the best use of a textbook I have ever had and I never would have passed without it.It is the same online format as the test.

Dont take any of these CLEP tests without having one of these books. The ones that have the CDs are the most useful. As I was leaving the testing center today, a young guy had just taken the Algebra test and he failed it. He didnt know the format of the tests, he didnt know to answer as many as possible since only the correct answers count, and he hadnt had Algebra since 8th grade. Now he cant take this again for 6 months! Bad move.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was all I needed for Freshman Comp. CLEP
I studied from this book and took the practice tests on the included CD. My scores on the practice test were decent but I certainly got several wrong. Then I went and took both the English Comp with Essay, and the Freshman College Composition CLEPs. Out of a perfect score of 80 on the actual tests I got a 79 on each!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Made an 'A'
This was my first time using a REA book for a CLEP. I read this review book TWICE and watched the DVD series 'America: The Story of Us'(Stop watching after they start talking about events past 1877). I felt very prepared as I was completing the test, and I passed. Follow my lead...Good luck

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't CLEP it without it
I just got home a few hours ago from taking the US History I CLEP at the local college and scored a 68.I'm quite happy with this score as passing at the local institution is 50 (ACE score recommended). This book was the cornerstone of my ability to review the prerequisite knowledge to CLEP this test. This book was not the only resource used, so I would suggest additional resources as well. For those who are curious, here were my studying plans.

1.I read the entire text of the book, up until the first practice.I did this over a 3 day period off and on.
2.I also used the "SparkNotes Study Cards" for US History as well.I previously separated these out for the specific period for the test and my wife went through these with me, quizing me on the material.Missed cards went into a separate stack for later review and attempts.Be sure to use more than just the backs of the cards themselves for the material. It is important to understand why an event happened, along with what the outcome was. These cards are great for getting the broadness of the material, but be sure to use wikipedia to understand the chain of events which concur with the event.
3.Take first practice test.Any unknown material on the test, be sure to make note concerning.Read the responses in the back of the book over missed questions. If you feel you don't understand the event (why and what happened), be sure to look up the event on wikipedia.
4.Take the second practice test.Once again, review unknown material and review missed questions. If you notice any repeatedly missed material between tests 1 and tests 2, review the second in the book again as well and not just the missed questions.
5.Take the third test (I took the night before).Repeat steps from #4.

As for the cards, I did not get all of the study cards down.I would say I had about 90% of the cards on the correct side before taking the test.Remember they don't expect you to know everything about the period; it's a really long stretch of time, after all.Instead, remember to hit the high notes and focus on cause and effect.

Women's rights are very important on this test.Go outside the book and look at some of this information on your own accord. You can expect tons of questions about the topic; I'd say 15% of the test was related, in one way or the next, to women's movements.Second, I would expect questions over slavery and blacks in America.

Be sure to cover the large land gains in America as well and events surrounding specific additions of states.Pay close attention to the Louisiana purchase, Kansas-Nebraska Act, etc. Many of these are key elements in understanding the causes of the Civil War, which really stretch back to the days immediately following the American Revolution.

Just remember, while they don't expect you to know everything, the questions they ask are very random. There's no telling what version of the test you're going to get.Using the book definitely helped guide me to victory, but I am also very glad I got the flash cards as well. That all being said, I think you probably could pass the CLEP using only this book. However, I also see it as a bit of a gamble depending on the version of the test you get.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was helpful!
This study guide was a great starting point to studying for the US History I exam, but I felt as though I needed more than it offered for information.I supplemented with a college-level US history textbook and Barron's Study Keys.Between studying all three for two months and very intensive studing the last three weeks, I was able to pass this exam with a 63 (passing is 50).I also took all three practice exams in this book. I would recommend that this exam not be taken lightly because it was more difficult than the practice exams. You really have to know your facts to pass this exam.I'm happy I passed, but expected a higher score based on my practice exam results. Good luck to all!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Printed Material You Need
After reading some of the reviews on this site, I worried about the book's adequacy in preparing me for this CLEP exam. I supplemented my study of this book (including the use of the detailed explanation of the practice test questions) with some help from the HippoCampus free online AP US History presentations and was able to score a 74 out of 80 on the CLEP test very recently.

I don't know what to say to those people who got a failing grade on this test. I only studied for a day and a half, and I hadn't taken any US History courses in eight years - and aced the test with 25 minutes to spare. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not at all happy.....
This book seems to be ok but I won't know for sure until I go for the English Composition Exam. But my real beef has to do with the CD-ROM that came with the book.

The CD is designed to create for the student a feel for what the real test day will feel like. So I started working with the English Composition questions on Practice Exam 1. I studied for actually a couple of weeks before I sat down and took the first practice exam. According to the CD's score, I failed. Then I went back and started studying the questions that I failed. A few days later, after I felt that I had the failed questions studied, I took the test again and failed again. I repeated this over a period of 4 to 5 weeks. Each time I took the practice exam, I either failed or got a score that was so low that I didn't feel that I should take the real test yet. I want to walk in there and ace it so that I don't have to wait the mandatory 6 months before I'm allowed to take it again.

So after weeks of studying I suddenly realized that many of the answers that the practice exam showed me as getting wrong, I had answered correctly all along. I started double checking. I started by taking the English Composition test and using the answer key in the book to record my answers. Guess what?!! The damn book failed its own test! I also discovered that many times I would click on the right answer as being "A" and the practice exam showed as my clicking on a different letter thereby getting the question wrong.

But it gets worse! I soon discovered that there a number of questions that I got wrong that the practice exam on the CD showed me as having gotten right. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!! Now I've got to go back and basically start from scratch. This means that the combination of this book and the CD-ROM has taught me many, many wrong answers and now I have to UNLEARN. I just do NOT need this kind of confusion and this cannot be the goal of this book.

Folks, the CD-ROM is absolutely WORTHLESS. Get the book, yes, but throw that damn CD straight in the trash before it really messes your mind up. I cannot believe how much time I've wasted with this total peice of trash. This is one of those times when giving my money back is no where near enough compensation for the time just pissed away!! Hell yes I'm mad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide for CLEP
I have passed a lot of CLEPs, and REA has helped me. Their practice exams are close in difficulty to the real thing, so you can gauge your readiness by them.

Humanities is a tough exam because it covers many subjects, so you will need other sources for that one. It's never a bad a idea to have a few different sources when you prepare for an exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars CELP
Great resource, the CD was great because it was was identical to the test.If you can pass this this test you will succeed on the CLEP test. The answers are not the same but similar content. The point is that if you pass the sample test you can pass the real test because the actual test covers a broad range which is similar to the that in the CD.The study information is very useful and will help you to get a passing score. So study the book take the test and if you pass you can feel pretty good that you will pass the CLEP.

1-0 out of 5 stars CLEP General Exams 17 Full-Length Practice Exams
I recently took the Humanities CLEP exam. I used the REA CLEP general exams manual to study, review, and practice test exams to prepare for the exam. I found less then 10 questions on the exam, (out of 140) which were even close to the questions and answers in this REA test manual.

Needless to say, I didn't pass the exam. I got close ..score 46, but needed 50. I highly recommend using the CLEP OFFICIAL test manual for your primary test preparation. I am going to call REA and advise them their test manual is not worth using for the Humanities exam. I spent $30 for this manual plus $60 for the exam and $15 for the
Testing center; $105 spent, and nothing to show for it. I hope this helps others

Thx

2-0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN MOST BOOKS
THIS BOOK IS GOOD FOR GETTING A GENERAL IDEA OF HOW THE TEST IS ADMINISTERED, AND THE REVIEW QUESTIONS WERE DISCUSSED IN GOOD DETAIL, BUT WHEN I TOOK THE TEST, THERE WAS MAYBE A HANDFUL OF QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY PERTAINED TO TO THE REAL TEST.NOT A GOOD BOOK FOR REVIEW, BUT GOOD TO GET AN IDEA AS TO HOW HARD THE TEST IS GOING TO BE. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your time
I Just want to add one more review, and agree with all the reviews below. This book has nothing to do with the American Government CLEP. DOn't waste your time or money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a penny
I purchased this book to be prepared for a clep exam and it claimed they cover everything you need for the test. i took all the practice tests and scored at least 98% on them. I read the book a few times and even wrote notes out. at the day of the test i could hardly believe my eyes. There were maybe three questions that were answered in the book, the rest was not. I failed the test, which hasnt happened in at least 10 years. the book is a waste of money. Dont buy it! Save the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars What Is the Secret Recipe for Passing AG?
After reading this text three times, and after hours of committing every Amendment and law case of the Supreme Court covered here to memory, after reading the U. S. Constitution five times and both of John Locke's Treatises on Government, I failed this course by four questions. My critique of this course is for the self-taught students looking to enjoy success, as I have had success in other subjects, with the CLEP exams.Perhaps this book is worth the money but I'm unconvinced the material written in this book is enough for complete confidence on the day of the test. Most of what I studied was superfluous.Apparently, the secret recipe for passing this course is: REA's American Government CLEP study guide, any brief history of Black America, and any brief history of feminist movements reflecting civil rights.I knew what was written in the Fourteenth Amendment when I took the test, but I had no idea the test was going to be less about government and more about history, sometimes barely hitting the target of the subject of government or even law.The names of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Abraham Lincoln never appeared on the test I took. There were few questions on the Constitution itself, which I believed was American Government.Maybe I should be critiquing the test itself, but I hope to enlighten serious students.Yes, this book is very interesting - everything from the Second Continental Congress to Plessey versus Ferguson. In all fairness, this text may be enough to score enough to pass.Perhaps a student better than I could have passed the test with five or eight questions to spare based on the information covered here. However, as I already mentioned, it's insufficient for having confidence when testing day arrives. This test is a game.If students use the secret recipe I provided, I'm sure they will do quite well. Also, adding a documentary on Congress to the study time will be the icing on the cake.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Like some of the other reviewers, I read this book cover to cover.I also took the practice tests and did very well on them. However, there were hardly any questions in the actual exam that resembled any of the questions in the book. There were quite a few questions that weren't even touched on in the whole book.Luckily, my college requires two government classes, the CLEP only counts for one of them, and I had already taken the other. My previous government class touched on a lot of these topics, and I still had the textbook, so I read all of the textbook that was not exclusively about Texas government. If I hadn't done that, I would never have passed this exam.

Don't waste your money on this book. The College Board website has links to some free resources online, and they are much better than what's covered in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good coverage
More than bringing up what you need to know to pass the test, this CLEP book makes for pretty good reading. It can't hurt to look at other resources, but this book gets the job done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ecellent study source with two tests
excellent work by the author- all the relevant info in one place and communicated clearly- next step is to make it an audible book

1-0 out of 5 stars Something's not right here...
I teach a Business Law class in high school.I decided to use this REA book this year instead of my normal text and see if my students could pass the CLEP exam.We normally don't cover as much as this REA book includes, but I figured, we might as well try for some college credits if we can get 'em.All of my students outlined the book, created flow charts and mind maps, etc.We looked at all the questions and explanations to figure out why the wrong answers were wrong (not just to see what the correct answer was).

Today one of my students took the CLEP exam. This student is very conscientious and took the two practice exams multiple times. When she first took it, she was scoring in the 80% range. After a while she was so familiar with the questions in the REA book that she was scoring in the 90+% range. After studying the REA book for so long, she took the College Board's 70 practice questions (which she had never seen before) and scored 65%.This was a drop from her REA scores, but still gave her a substantial cushion over the 50% mark needed to "pass" the CLEP.Seeing this, we were confident that she would get at least a 50 on the real exam. She took the CLEP test today and, unfortunately, scored a 46.Talk about heart break. She noted that there were MANY questions that were not covered in the REA book.I honestly don't see how the 5-star ratings accurately reflect the usefulness of this REA study guide. My student essentially experienced a 19% drop between the College Board questions and the actual CLEP exam. She had an even more precipitous drop from the REA to the actual exam.If she knows the REA content so well, but can't pass the actual exam, then something is wrong. From my perspective, it's the book that is lacking -either its coverage is not broad enough, or it's not covering topics in the depth that is required to pass the exam.I don't think I'm gonna use this book any more and I definitely don't recommend it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great B.Law Study Guide
I just passed B.law clep with 17 points to spare! Highly recommended & I'm now buying clep algebra by same authors

4-0 out of 5 stars Read, Outlined, Studied, Passed
I purchased this book in early August. I studied for a month by reading it front to back two times (first time contracts didn't make much sense). After getting a general understanding, I outlined the book with main ideas which I didn't fully remember. Finally, I read over my outline several times, did the practice exams, studied those... and passed the exam :)

I definitely recommend this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars TAKE THE CLASS! DON'T BOTHER BUYING THIS!
****** REAL ADVICE FOR REAL PEOPLE IN THE WORKFORCE / BUSY LIFE ****** I bought this book and the Barrons book for the Clep exam.I read the book entirely and took notesfor the bold words. The test has 2 exams for preparation. It took me a month to read the whole thing from start to finish. I took the exam using this book and FAILED.I took it again using the Barron's book and PASSED. The legal scenarios I found to be the most helpful portions of the book. Not all the legal terms that I saw on the exam appeared in this book. I have a3.71 GPA and I study pretty hard for tests so this caught me off guard. The test was so hard that every answer seemed to be worded almost the same so its very tricky. Those other reviews with 5 stars may have been written by individuals who don't work a full-time job or have scholarships and only go attend school all day.If you are a student and only a student then I'd say buy it. Let me warn you that this book alone is not suffice at all. The book is very thin and it doesn't cover enough. It does help you but I would say only 65%.The other 35% was foreign and I would have needed to buy a third book to find these terms. Just take the class its easier and less time-consuming. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide.
I was pressured by time because the classes I'm taking for the upper division were getting full quickly, so I studied for nearly two weeks and I passed!
The guide is understandable, condensed and precise, no fillers or unnecessary material you won't need for the test. six chapters covers almost all!
The only downside I experienced is that, even almost everything is covered there were a few questions in the test I wasn't sure it was part of the material. But I finished the test in less than 50 minutes! not so bad for a two weeks study.
Make sure you memorize the names and their correlation with the theories/history/definitions.
In overall, my advice for taking the test would be, make sure you completely comprehend the material, common sense is definitely a big plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Book
Used the book to study for a Principles of Mgmt class, not to take the CLEP test.Found it very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I had no managment experience, but need to take a Principles of Management course as part of my degree requirements.I bought this book from COMEX, and the REA book.I studied both for a couple of weeks (an hour here, an hour there).Probably had about 15 hrs total study time. You only need a 50 to pass the CLEP, I passed with a 75, with 45 minutes to spare. You could probably pass with just the COMEX book, but I studied both just to be safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed With Flying Colors Thanks to This Book
I have never taken a business class and I scored 69 after studying this book for less than a week! (Passing score is 50). I'd say its a good investment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but not up to date
This book was helpful for studying, but I recommend going to the official clep website and purchasing a practice test to also help you study. The practice test questions in this book were pretty different from the clep practice test, but I still managed to pass! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my academic career!
I had 2 more units needed and had let several years lapse. I had to appeal for re-entry without going into a new catalog year and requiring a number of new classes. The school gave me one shot and suggested that I take this CLEP test, even though it was a 6 unit test. OMG - pressure! I was a little scared about the test after reading some of the reviews but followed the advice. I have to say that this book adequately prepared me for the test. The practice tests were far more difficult than the actual test and I'm glad about that. Passed w/ flying colors and got that diploma!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of practice tests
I took this CLEP last week and passed with a 60.It wasn't that hard but studying the books practice test really help me know what to expect and to help with the paceing myself to finish in time.TH review section really isn't worth to much time.I read like 5 pages and just started taking the tests and reading the explainations of why the answer I picked was right or wrong. This is best used a practice test guide than for a review of anykind but is good enough for the 4 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars REA: In This Case All That's Needed to Pass
I passed this exam today with a 70.The REA book prepared me excellently.

The literary review section covers Prose, Poetry, and Drama.Aside from reading this review and writing out the literary terms I was less familiar with on some flash cards, I took the three practice exams, which - as others accurately noted - were more difficult than the real thing.I scored 58% on the first two exams and 68% on the third.(I also took a CLEP Official 50-question practice quiz and got an 82%.)

In short, this REA guide is one of their best (it is certainly written better than the other REA guides I've read). If you are inclined to like to read, passing should be easy, otherwise, a week of prep (I had 6 days to go through the book) may not be enough.Either way, this is doubtless the best place (next to the InstantCert Forum) to start with the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP Test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed The Clep!!
So I took the Clep this morning and got a 66 score on it, I used to book and only did the practice test at the end of the book, which was really really really really hard compared to the actual clep, and the actual clep only had 80 questions. The only thing that was hard about it was the essay part of the exam. But you do not need to get this book to pass just look up the Literary Terms and you will pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book works

5-0 out of 5 stars Properly Prepared
I have used many REA study guides, and all of them have helped me obtain college credits. The easiest (in order) was sociology, human growth and development, literature, and then the hardest was biology. I read the book a few times and made sure I understood the concepts. I would pay particular attention to language, theories about learning, Erkison, Frued, moral stages, Piaget, ect. The chapter about the eye/brain (very little on actual exam) is not even worth looking at. I am a very good test taker in general, so I am not sure how much that helps on the actual exams. I scored a 67 out of 80 on the HGD. I also took pych 101 prior to studying for this. I would recommend studying a little pych basics if you haven't had any prior experience. I believe this product is worth the money. If you don't have a background in pych or not a good test taker with a little more preperation you are sure to pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEP - Human Growth & Development
This was an easy to use, easy to understand review.Passed the CLEP test with plenty of "room to spare."Highly recommend this guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars NICE BOOK BUT NOT COMPREHENSIVE ENOUGH!
Yes like some of these other reviews say this is a nice book but the fact is that this book alone may not be enough to pass the Human Growth & Development CLEP test. Yes there are several other reviews about this CLEP test and this books preparation for it but most of the reviews are over a year old and are outdated. If you have no prior college experience and have never taked a CLEP test before and a lot of people haven't then you need to avoid this book by REA and this CLEP test and first try something easy like CLEP Principles of Marketing which REA also makes a book for. You should not depend on this book and this book alone to pass this CLEP test at least supplement it with something such as the College Board CLEP Guide which is on the shelf in almost any bookstore. Furthermore if you have never taken a CLEP test before avoid Human Growth and Development and take an easier CLEP test instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars It gets the job done
It's not a great book, but it gets the job done. Several questions even in the sample tests simply are not related to what you find in the text and the real test also has a number of questions that the book doesn't answer. No reason to learn the book by heart. Common sense counts for about 40-44 points (50 = pass). You'll be ok.

4-0 out of 5 stars Growth and Development CLEP
I took the clep and passed with a 59.I would not have passed without this book.Study and know the different theories, particularly Piaget. The overall test was not as easy as some have described. If you study and learn the contents of this book you will pass. Definately recommended. ... Read more
