Product Description
Acing the CLEP is very different from getting straight A's in school, so The Princeton Review doesn't try to teach you everything there is to know about every subject -- only the techniques that you need to score higher on the CLEP. Cracking the CLEPfocuses on the most popular CLEP subject tests, including English Composition, College Mathematics, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. This fully updated edition of Cracking the CLEP also includes 5 full-length sample exams. The questions on these tests are exactly like those on real CLEP exams, and there are complete explanations for every solution in the book.

Cracking the CLEP, 5th Edition will teach you how to

- Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
- Avoid the tricky Restructuring Sentences and Analyzing Writing questions on the English exam
- Tackle the Humanities exam by using clues in the questions
- Crack the algebra problems by "plugging in" numbers in place of letters
- Ace the Social and Natural Science exams by tailoring your review to the tests ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Same as 4th edition
I think this is a very good book to use for CLEP preparation. I already owned the 4th edition and thought I could benefit from getting the latest edition. Not true! They are the same book just repackaged with a different cover. This is something that really burns me. As a college student I get burned nearly every semester with not being able to sell back books because a "new edition" is coming out. Then you find out that essentially only the cover is changed and not the book's content. There ought to be a law against such things. I'm done ranting, end soapbox mode.

Aside from this issue, I think this is a pretty good book to use for preparing for CLEP testing. It gives good insight into what you need to study for a test. It also gives insight into what you don't need to know. That's very beneficial. It keeps you from learning unnecessary information. Many of the test taking tips are very helpful for any test you may be taking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time.
I was disappointed with this book, I even had it shipped in two days think that this would be the piece of the puzzle I was missing. If I had my choice I would ship it back. If you want practice tests then this might be the book for you to buy, but it will NOT be in my toolkit of items to use for the various CLEP tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent! thank you
I ordered this book to be shipped to Canada and i was pretty worried it would take very long to get here but it took quickly and i was very impressed!

3-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding resource -- may be incomplete
NOTE: I am only reviewing the algebra portion of this book.I didn't read any other part.

THE GOOD: Of all the CLEP resources I've found so far, this was the best written.

THE BAD: Other CLEP test prep tools (including the official one offered by the company) DO NOT LOOK LIKE the ones offered by this book!Is it enough?I don't know!I can only take the test once every 6 months and I don't want to just hope for the best.I want to know.

CONCLUSION: An accessory resource -- use it with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source to study for CLEP exam
I used this book exclusively to study for the CLEP Introductory Sociology exam. After going over the review materials and the practice test, you will be ready to take the exam! I passed with a score of 75. Great book, definitely worth the investment if you are looking to take this CLEP exam

5-0 out of 5 stars great review of sociology material
This book quickly covers the basics of sociology.I was able to spend about 3 hours reading it and passed the CLEP.I recommend taking the quiz questions to see which areas to focus on.

4-0 out of 5 stars CLEP Sociology Book
I believe this series of CLEP Test prep books are a great tool to be able to pass any test they offer material on.I needed 12 hours of credit to be able to graduate early so I purchased this series of books for Sociology, Western Civilizations I, U.S. History I, and U.S. History II.I studied for a week and passed all of them with flying colors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of American Literature
This book has good coverage of each period of American Literature. It seems like it was written in a bit of a rush, as I'm sure it was, and so long as you can handle a sloppily formulated sentence or two, this book will give you a good sense for what you'll see on the American Literature CLEP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Best @#$^% purchase ever
Literally 2 months before college graduation I realized I was a credit short.I signed up to take the test, studied my butt off for 72 hours and scored a 67 on the test with a minimum of 59 to pass.

This CLEP book was the only resource, other than the sample test from Collegeboard, that I used.If you truly memorize everything in there, names, eras, dynasties, art, and maps YOU WILL PASS.

I cannot describe how great this is.Ideally, over the space of two weeks, everything in here is very manageable to learn. If you like history, then this test will be a breeze.

The CD rom was nice too, since the test is computerized.the format is a little different, but the questions in general on the REA tests are slightly harder than the actual CLEP exam so dont freak if you are just skirting by the 50 score mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's what you need to know.
The test is not the easiest; the details are important and an understanding of how it all fits together. You can pass if you memorize enough, and this book covers what you need to know. However, I have also taken other social science tests as well as an art history class, so that helped as well. If this is your first C.L.E.P. test and you have no prior knowledge, try something easier instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good, but not necessarily sufficient
I purchased this study guide a while ago, and I have to say the money was well worth it. The content is fairly organized and easy to follow. As with any CLEP, it is always best to use several resources. Personally, I have been using [...] for months, and have been really happy with it so far. I've passed 5 CLEPs, and it has been my primary source for study information. It's definitely worth checking out. They even have a money back guarantee in case you aren't satisfied with it!
As soon as you're registered, I would also highly recommend to use the forums for exam-specific feedback. Oh yeah, and you can use the coupon code "66026" to get [...] off your first month's access fee. Good luck to all my fellow CLEPsters out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed the test!
Thats right, I passed the test. In order to do this I read the entire REA book in two days. After I finished reading, I took the tests included on the CD-Rom. I reviewed all of the questions that I missed and also read all of the explanations of the answers. Then I read 14 chapters of our college text book in two days. The REA book helped me to prepare and pass the CLEP test in 4 days. Our school requires a 57 and that is the exact score that I received! Talk about luck, it is a difficult test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to pass, but not everything you need.
I passed the Clep Western Civilization with this book and Wikipedia as my ONLY resources. Unlike others, I recommend you follow the book verbatim. Take the sample test first to find out your weaknesses and then read the entire book for a summary of Western Civilization history. For anything you are not familiar with or want more details, hit up WikiPedia to read more in depth.

I only spent 4 days prepping for my test. 1 day to do the test and review the answers after I took the test, 2 days to read the whole book and look up additional information via wikipedia and 1 day to take the final practice test and review the explanations.

Although the actual test questions are much different then the ones in the book, the explanations from the CD-ROM help you understand how to conclude a good answer. I scored a scaled score of 61, good enough for a "A" according to the book. There will be some gaps as this book will not substitute for a entire semester class but good thing is Wikipedia filled in most if not all the gaps. The only thing I don't think I did well on is the questions about artwork but then again, you don't need to get every question right, just a score of 50 will do.
Good luck. I recommend this book to give you the foundation. I am purchasing other REA books for the other 4 CLEP tests I am taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked!!
I bought REA CLEP Calculus w/CD after taking one year of high school calculus. I wanted to get college credit for what I (thought) I had already learned by taking the clep tes. On the first practice test, I got a 42 (scaled score, out of 80). Then I worked all the way through the book, doing an hour a day. It should have taken me about three weeks, but I wasn't perfectly consistent so it took around a month. I did the second practice test after working through the book, and got a 65. On the real test I got a 73! This was well above the score I needed to pass! Yay for this book! It raised my score by 23 or 31 points, depending on the way you count it! If you want to pass the clep calculus test, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect preparation
This book provided the perfect amount of review and practice for my daughter's recent CLEP calculus exam. She scored well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good review for the CLEP calculus test
I bought this book for my son, he used it to review for the CLEP calculus test, and passed it with no problems at all.He liked the computer based tests, since the CLEP is given on computer it makes the practice tests more like the real CLEP.All of the practice tests are on the CDROM, that's not true for all of the CLEP books in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent review source
This is an excellent resource for the CLEP calculus test (the first I have ever taken). It provides focused facts and reviews that closely parallel the actual test material.

I studied calculus on my own from a textbook, and used this book for review four days before the actual testing time. For the first practice test I got a D, the second a B, and on the actual CLEP exam I got a scaled score of 80, 100%. My honest opinion is that this book knows what its talking about, and has the information to get you a qualifying score. The CD application is organized as the CLEP exam is, which helps with orientation and reflexes.

As I have not tried other CLEP calculus resources you may want to investigate those before making a final decision (the price is a little gnarly). However this book does all it needs to.

5-0 out of 5 stars REA Books are the Best!!!!
REA books are great and you won't be disappointed. I have passed many clep tests with these books. They come with a cd-rom that has practice tests on it. These books are detailed but not to deep for the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Happens When the Quality of G/S Declines?
The fact that the quality of this information is so low, and the price of this book is the same as the higher quality REA study guides (such as Western Civilization I and II, or Analyzing and Interpreting Literature) proves to be contrary to the heart of the subject of Microeconomics. The better the quality of X, the higher the price; and if the quality is low, so should the number on the price tag.Perhaps the information written in words on the pages are true, but the author has done a horrible job of explaining to the self-taught student how the words relate to the pictures, and understanding the graphs and pictures visually is essential for passing the test.Is it possible to pass the test with this book? The answer may be yes.It may also be possible to pass the test for some students without any study at all. However, I'm critiquing the quality of this product, and I'm a very unhappy consumer.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can pass with this book
I do not entirely agree with the other reviews. I came into this subject with no prior knowledge and read the book through for some background information. In hindsight, it probably makes more sense to begin with the Practise Tests at the end of the book, reading the explanations to the answers and using the tests as learning tools. You will then quickly begin to understand how to answer typical CLEP questions and the earlier Microeconomics review will then begin to make sense afterwards.

You have to remember that these books are meant as tools to help you pass the CLEP, not to become an expert in the given subject matter. You may not get every question right, nor may you know how to approach a minority of the questions, however, the vast majority of CLEP questions test the fundamentals (repeatedly) and not the exceptions.

I browsed about 10 pages of a standard Microeconomics textbook in order to solidify some of the majour concepts, however, this REA book was my main source. It is obviously then necessary to do the practise questions in the "CLEP Official Study Guide", as many actual questions are either verbatim copies or slight variants of these questions.

I myself only did the aforementioned and received a 68 on the exam this morning, after 10 days of studying the subject from scratch. Had I done a course or read a textbook cover to cover, I may have achieved a higher mark, but the point is really just to pass (50) and not to stress out over the details. Remember, 70% of the questions will be based on 10% of the material! Focus on what's important...

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for in-depth study and review in specific areas...
As a previous reviewer noted, this book is not as clear as it could be.Compared to the five other REA books I've successfully used in the past, this didn't match my expectations.I found at least two errors (one in a formula, another in the practice tests), and in some areas, the author did not explain it very well, while in others, he covered it more in-depth than necessary.

I used this book in conjunction with Princeton Review's "Cracking the Ap Economics Macro and Micro Exams, 2008 Edition", by David Anderson, Ph.D. (Cracking the AP Economics Macro & Micro Exams, 2008 Edition (College Test Prep))I highly recommend that book - it also comes with two practice tests, one for macro and one for micro. However, I still recommend buying this REA guide, because it does prove helpful, not only in content, but also in the fact that included is two practice tests to gauge your current level of understanding.

Another resource I would definitely recommend is InstantCert.com.For $20/month (you can cancel at any time), you have access to many flashcards (over 200) for many CLEP, DANTES, TECEP and ECE exams. The flashcards are fill in the blank, and you can start out not knowing anything, and the important part is to read the explanation for each question, whether you get it right or wrong.I am not affiliated with IC in any way, except for the fact that I have paid for their resources. But I'm going off on a rabbit trail...

The last resource I would recommend is the Official CLEP Study Guide CLEP Official Study Guide 2009 (Clep Official Study Guide). For each exam, there is a 60-question practice test, which is indispensable, and inexpensive.

In conclusion, I studied the REA and Princeton Review books, went through the 200+ InstantCert flashcards three times, and took all four practice tests (REA: 70, 65; PR: 82%; CLEP Study Guide: 84%), and passed the exam today with a 77.

2-0 out of 5 stars I passed, but review is rough.
I normally love REA review books but this author is really hard to comprehend. I used other notes available on the internet for free to help study for this CLEP. I ended up passing but felt like studying for this test was just as much work as the class, and I believe it is the way this author teaches/writes.

It will help you pass, but don't plan on cramming for this one w/ this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book needed to pass.
I recently passed the Financial Accounting exam with a score of 66 after a couple weeks studying this book (I had one very basic Accounting class earlier, though, so I knew some of the stuff already). This book was a great study tool and I found that I didn't need to study any other books on Accounting for the test... this book covered pretty much everything.

However, if you have never had any Accounting experience before, this book might be a bit confusing at first. For one thing, it used the VJE (Vertical Journal Entry) method, which I found to be quite confusing and not at all helpful when it came to the actual test. But at the end of each chapter, it does show the general journal entries, so I just studied those and it helped a lot.

For my advice, just study this book until you know your credits and debits, study every one of the chapters thoroughly, do ALL of the math in the practice questions, and know the important Accounting principles. Then you should be set to go.

4-0 out of 5 stars This REA books isn't quite as good as the other ones
I love REA books. I have passed many clep tests with them. This books is still worth buying, but this test is really hard and you might need a book that goes into more detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me a ton of $$$$$$$
This book saved me about $4500 in tuition, not to mention the cost of textbooks.I needed to score a 57 to get credit for two accounting classes (9 hours worth of credit). After a couple of weeks of studying over winter break I nailed a 61!It has put me extremely close to graduation and saved me time as well.Great product and well worth the price.Just as a point of reference, I took accounting in college once many, many years ago and failed.Miserably.This book made it much easier for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep!
I have taken four CLEP tests and this book was by far the best!It featured practice questions, flashcard prep, and great tips to beat the CLEP!Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!!
I highly recommend this study guide.I studied for the financial accounting CLEP over the winter break using the REA prep book.I spent about 2-3 weeks reading a little every night, doing the practice questions, and reviewing concepts or whole chapters as necessary based on my practice results.I got a 61 and a 62 on the sample tests included with the book, and a 63 on the real test.I am planning to use REA to help me CLEP out of three more classes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to pass the chemistry CLEP-This book is 1 of 3 materials you need.
When the clep administrator at my institution informed me that no one he had ever given the chemistry clep to had passed, I decided to take the preparation very seriously. I began researching how other people had passed the test and ordered several materials. After 8+ years of no chemistry, my chemistry knowledge was not very good, so I had to prepare more than someone who just finished a high school chem or college intro chem course. If you are starting from scratch or just want to make sure you pass this test, then this is what I would recommend. Begin with the Wiley, "Chemistry Concepts and Problems: A Self Teaching Guide." This book is written in a continuous question and answer format that reviews and tests your knowledge to build a strong foundation of chemistry knowledge and problem solving. Then simultaneously study REA's "CLEP Chimistry," by Peel (I strongly recommend getting the book and CD with two practice tests included) with the Chemistry CLEP Professor software. You will find the REA book to be very summarized. I bought that first and felt like I needed more help. I found the CLEP Professor and gave it a try. My comprehension and retention immediately began skyrocketing, in addition to my practice test scores! The CLEP Professor follows the exact format and order of information of the book, but fills in a lot of the gaps. You may opt to purchase a general chemistry textbook to look up additional information on specific questions, but I would not recommend studying it alone to pass. There is too much information not focused for the CLEP exam that will make you forget what you need to know. You can also research anything you need to know more about online making the textbook unnecessary. I would recommend at least one month to go through these three materials. You should plan to spend about two weeks on the Wiley Self Study and two weeks on the CLEP professor and REA book together. That will give you 6 practice tests to work on. I recommend taking one practice test while you are studying the last two materials every other day. This will show you what you are learning and what you need to learn. Spend one month and about a total of $150 and you can save two semesters of time and about $2000. You should pass easily if you follow the three steps of this program: 1-Wiley Self-Teaching Guide, 2-CLEP Professor and REA CLEP Chemistry, 3-Take practice tests and look up material you are unfamiliar with. I hope you do well.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
waste of money, waste of time.. lots of error. did not help me with my study

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but largely flawed.
REA does a good job of giving you a summary of general chemistry, but when it comes to the CLEP test, it really misses a lot of important information and teaches many things that are not covered.

I did pass the chemistry CLEP, but I used several other books. I was short on time (about two weeks of study), so I didn't get to fully work on most of the books. Two notable books I used in my study were Chemistry: Concepts and Problems: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides) and Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep). "Chemistry: Concepts and Problems" is a great book that "completely" covers the information in most general chemistry classes. There's problems for everything and it really forces you to learn and memorize the material. Another great book was "Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam, 2009 Edition. I used the 2007 edition, but I'm sure that the newest edition is just as great. I thought that "Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam" was very focused on what you needed to know for the CLEP, even though it was written for the AP. After the test, I reviewed the book and found that most of the information was in there. Another recommendation is to use all the information available freely online. Google is your friend.

If you have plenty of time to study for the chemistry CLEP (1 month or more) go for Chemistry: Concepts and Problems: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides). If you are short on time, check out Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep). Be sure to look online on message boards for information on the CLEP.

Good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful But Full of Errors - Good Sample Tests
I'm giving this book three stars because it's useful but it's full of errors. I contacted REA about an errata for it and they didn't have one at the time (I created one and you can download it from 4Shared - just search for "CLEP Chemistry"; for some bizarre reason, REA refused to make an errata easily downloadable on their website - if they have one now you'll have to call or email). Nevertheless, this book was still useful to me and I recommend buying it.

I used this book in conjunction with a college chemistry textbook to pass the CLEP. If you can get past the errors, this book really helps narrow the field of study. You'll definitely still need a college chemistry textbook to go along with it for further reading or for sample problems to work. Please don't view this as an additional criticism of the book as it's unreasonable to expect that a book of this size could give you everything from a one-year general chemistry book. This book reinforces key concepts and helps you focus on what's really important.

The two practice tests in the book are excellent and were crucial to my passing score (test one is easier than the CLEP but test two is about on par with the actual CLEP test). The tests have a few errors in them but are better than the main text. You might also consider purchasing a sample chemistry CLEP test from CollegeBoard (for $10) just to have third test (I did). By the way, if you're interested, the college chemistry textbook I used was "Chemical Principles - The Quest for Insight" 3rd Edition by Atkins & Jones - the same book MIT uses for it's free OpenCourseWare. Good luck on the CLEP - it isn't easy!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 semesters of Chemistry can't be compressed into a book this small, but it tries.
I own at least a half dozen REA CLEP titles, all of them are pretty good. The history, psychology, and sociology are the best. The problem with this title is that it has to cram 2 semesters worth of Chemistry into a hundred pages or so.A task I don't think can be done. It's not necessarily the authors fault. It's a good attempt, but if you try to use this book alone, you will fail more than likely. My suggestion is to go here on Amazon and purchase a college level text book and study guide that is one or two editions old.(Chemistry doesn't change all THAT much!)I bought both a textbook and study guide for $6.00 plus shipping!Remember, that this CLEP test, unlike others, tests you over 2 semesters worth of material. This isn't something you can pick up in a week or two and pass if you haven't been around the material before.Good Luck! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Back to school after all these years!
I am a returning student and have elected to complete my BA in Business at a school that will give me credit for what I have already experienced and learned. I also can save money by taking a few CLEP courses. This book was great. It has helped me fill in much of the technical side of management.
I have accomplished much without a business degree, and believe I may have been able to accomplish even more.

Great work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time!
I purchased this book in hopes that it would help me pass the CLEP exam.My background is in Sociology and I have only work experience to rely on, so I thought that this would help me get the basics down.In studying this book I felt good about my progress as I had done well on the practice exams.Today I went to take the test and can honestly say that about 5% of what was on the REAL test was covered in the book. There were maybe 2 or 3 questions about theorists and the rest was more practical applications. You would be better suited to use common sense to work your way through the test than to fill your head with useless information that this book provides.I did, however, pass the exam, but I don't attribute any of it to REA's book.If you don't have practical work experience in business and you need some assistance in studying for this test, I would suggest a different book.Sometimes I feel like people are paid to write good reviews to peddle a product.I have nothing to gain by this review, but I just want people to know what they are getting into it.Take it for what it's worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars CLEP: Principles of Management
The book arrived in perfect condition as advertised and within the timeframe stated. I was a first time user of Amazon.com, now it's my first resource for quality items at an incredible price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Less than Ideal Preparation.
I went in to take the CLEP test today, after using CLEP Principles of Management to study.I had gone over each of the sample tests at least 3 times.I had thoroughly reviewed the material. And I was in the dark through most of the test.

Some concepts that show up on the test (PERT and Critical Path, among others) aren't even mentioned in the book. While the book focuses largely on history and people who developed the science of management, the actual test's focus is completely different.Groping through new material, I was shell-shocked to take the actual test.

I've taken 7 of these CLEPs.Most of the College Board CLEP books are great. But not this one.

As it is, I barely squeaked by with a passing grade. My advice: find another book.

3-0 out of 5 stars it is ok...
it is ok.yes, i passed with a 50.I feel that there is much needed data missing from this text if you are trying for a higher score...The human development was a GREAT book and so was prinicples of marketing those two i scored64 & 70 on. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as other REA guides, but workable
I passed my CLEP using this study aid to review, but the information seems disjointed. For example acronyms are used in the text with no definition given, then two sections later the acronym is defined. The book also lacks a glossary of acronyms, it really needs one with this subject. But, by using the always handy wiki I was able to make notes in the margin and passed with a 67; the test has a range of 20-80 points possible, 50 being passing.Get it, its worth it, but just be prepared to make lots of notes in the margins, oh and re-read the section on monetary policy and how bonds, and money supply interact.Good Luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive but a good review of the subject
If you already know some of the basics, then this book will be a great review.I had an economics class in high school 4 years ago, and I was able to score a 75 on the CLEP test using this book and an online resource [...].The book itself is not the best written and many of the topics were not covered as well as I was expecting. For instance, one of the supply-demand charts shows a price ceiling but does not explain the function of the ceiling. As for the tests, I scored 65-test 1, 59-test 2, 73-test 1, 68-test 2, and then 73-test 2.Each time I took the tests, I reviewed my answers before taking the next.

Studying Advice:Really try to understand the material instead of memorizing it.If it is not covered in this book well enough for you, look the particular topic up online.I took the first test 2 times and the second test 3 times. If you feel like you need more tests, [...]offers practice tests for each CLEP test.I've read they are harder than the actual test, but I do not have first hand knowledge.

In Short:Decent book with invaluable tests.Good luck when you take it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Comprenhensive
Great material to review, must allow enough time to study, the exam is hard and tricky. The material on this guide covers all you need to know for the test, must practice the enclosed test to be prepared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not near as good as other REA CLEP prep books
This is the seventh REA CLEP test prep book I've read.It is by far the least useful. It explains little and is full of charts and jargon. If you already know macroeconomics, it MIGHT (but probably not) be a useful refresher. If you have never taken macroeconomics before, you'll definitely need another study resource.

The practice tests are great, but the book needs to be completely rewritten.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scored 70+
I had taken a Microeconomics course already and thought it would be a waste to go through it all again with Macro, so I bought this book. With what I remember from Micro, I read through this book and took the practice tests in one afternoon and took the test the next day with probably about 5 hours of preparation.I scored better on the actual CLEP test (70+) than either of the practice exams (which were both good indicators of what the actual test was like). Overall this book was a good refresher, and even if you haven't taken any economics courses you have probably picked up most of this common sense information along the way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
A great person to do business with. Book was exactly how he said it was. Super fast shipper!

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading but probably not enough to pass.
I used this book in addition to another study guide (mostly the other one actually) to do well on the test. This book is easy to understand and read, but alone it's probably not enough information. It gives you a good general idea, but you need to know more than just that for the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review
I studied this review exclusively and passed after about 2 weeks worth of effort. I had also taken sociology and psychology prior to taking the exam, so this helped me concentrate on the history part, which wasn't exactly what I expected, but if you have a good general knowledge of history you should knowmost of the answers. I rated 4/5 because I recommend this book to CLEP takers if you want to pass, but if you want to get a perfect score you are going to need outside sources.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor
I urge all of you to use this study guide in addition to other history and social science study materials. The book does cover a lot of the exam material but this exam is worth 6 credits and you want to be prepared as possible.I scored a 61, but that was with a lot of studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just enough info - great book
This book does a great survey of all the tested subject areas. You will not get an 80, but the goal is merely to pass, which is what one must remember. I got a 65 this morning and studied only this book for 1 week. Use this book, your common sense, and general knowledge and you'll be just fine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good prep; very detailed.
The book helped me prepare and score well on the test, but I used an additional study guide too. It is very detailed, but this is better than there not being enough information; it just takes a while to read through it and memorize things. Overall, it's great test prep but the test itself is not easy. You need a good general idea of world history, U.S. history, as well as the social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science etc.). I think the CD test doesn't score your answers correctly because it takes points off for wrong answers, but I believe that the actual CLEP only gives you credit for the right ones. Nevertheless, the practice tests help you see where you're at as far as how much you need to know to pass the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Tests are excellent, review sections not as much.
I just passed the Social Sciences and History CLEP with a 64.I studied for about 2 weeks, 1-2 hours a day.The practice tests that REA gives with this book are superb. They mimic the actual test questions extremely well in content and language. The explanations to the answers are in-depth and insightful into how the test questions are constructed on the actual CLEP.However, the actual review sections on the history sections read like a history book. There are a couple paragraphs on this, a couple on that, and it is extremely difficult to retain any of the information in this format.
I purchased InstaCert's flash card system, a $10 practice test from [...] and googled free US History flash cards and reviewed them in addition to using the REA study book.I do not feel the REA text book (on it's own) will adequately prepare you for a 6 credit course test in this many course subjects. However, the sections on psychology, sociology, geography, etc. were adequate for review solely with the REA book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed my CLEP with this book!!
Used this book and passed my CLEP.This was worth the money and wish I would have purchased this several semesters ago. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Will NOT help you pass actual test...
Studied the book thoroughly, got 55 and 52% on REA tests in this book, then took an OFFICIAL CLEP test and got only 44%.Took the actual test and didn't pass; got only a 47%almost nothing covered in REA book was on the questions. If anything you need an additional textbook to study with to be able to pass. All the other REA books so far got me through but this one didn't.Sorry REA, you need to go into more detail for this test...

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
I passed the CLEP on the first try with a 59, but this was not my first CLEP. I used this book, along with the practice exams on the web pages [...], and a review of the French history pages from Wikipedia. This book was a great help, as were the two practice tests on the included CD. I only had to study for about 4 days. This was an easy way to get college credit. I am only giving the book 4 stars because I had to read so much information on Wikipedia, and there were a lot of questions on the test that covered material not in the book.

With all of that said, this book was key in my passing the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but be prepared
This book is much like the other REA guides I have used to get the 21 credits I now have; however, I noticed that the practice tests in the book were much easier than those in the CLEP Official Study Guide, as well as the actual CLEP.I highly recommend all the REA guides, but this particular one doesn't give as good a picture of one's preparedness as the others.I would aim for a raw score of 70-80 on the practice tests to consider myself adequately prepared for the CLEP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed Western Civ II CLEP
I used this as a review after listening to WCII audio lectures from The Teaching Company during a cross-country trip. This book, with its condensed review and practice tests, helped me focus in on exactly what I needed to know to pass.If you can retain the major events, players, etc. in this book when you take the test, you'll know enough.I got a 62, which converts to an A.However, I studied two months for this exam, listening to 24-hours of audio lectures, reading my lecturer's accompanying (very lengthy) outline, and then using this book from REA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for this test.
Once again another well written book by the people at REA.I used this book and passed the CLEP.Realize there is a lot of material for this test.I studied about 5 hours the day/night before the test and passed with a 61.I could have done better with just this book and more time spent studying the material, however the point is this is a very passable test with this book.Study according to your own test taking ability before trying the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide
This book has really helped me to study for my CLEP I love the way it is layed out and it didn't take me long to read through it which is allowing me to reread it and prepare even more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Studied and Aced It
I always knew a relatively good amount of western history, so it's hard to say what I would have gotten if I hadn't studied (though the practice test I took before doing any studying got me a scaled score of about 55). However, I got over 70 points (on the 20-80 scale) on the actual test after studying using this book. I would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I used it and passed.
I wanted to CLEP Western Civilization and the only history classes I took so far in college was American History 1 and 2. I also read a textbook for Western Civilizaton and studied for two weeks. The practice tests are helpful and it's important to understand the explanations of their answers. It's a valuable resource if you want to CLEP Western Civilization I. I took the test after studying for two weeks and I passed. Props to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for this clep exam!
I read only this book and passed this clep.Although one of the more difficult clep exams (at least for me as I'm not into history), this book was more than adequate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Like all of the REA guides I've used to study, this one gives a great overview of the information on the test. The practice tests are helpful and the answer explanations are also very useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed this test
I purchased this book and I passed the test with an A. I bought the official CollegeBoard CLEP guide, but it really only contained a practice quiz. This is the study guide that I used. I studied this guide for two weeks and took the practice quizzes several times. I believe that there is enough information in this book to help anyone pass the test, but you do need to study according to the study plan in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars MIGHT NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS CLEP
I took the Educational Psychology CLEP and passed (52) after I successfully took Intro to Psych CLEP and Human Growth and Development PSYC. I don't think this book would have been sufficient to pass the CLEP test all on it's own. There is a ton of information on the test that were never even mentioned in the book. My recommendation to pass the CLEP would be to take the Human Growth and Development CLEP first and then read this book and take the Educational Psychology CLEP soon after! And if you have a membership to InstaCert, which I didn't, review those flash cards. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed!
I passed my CLEP test with this book!!

I have to admit, I thought I had the basic knowledge of educational psychology, but this book really helped me learn the things I wasn't so familiar with and brush up on the things I already knew.

I just took the tests first, then went back and reviewed all of the material that I got incorrect.I passed my test with flying colors and this is the only study material I used!

4-0 out of 5 stars good review for the test
I have never taken ed psych before and i used this as my sole study guide.I passed the exam easily yesterday. It does seem like there is info on the test that was not in the book, but the book gives you most of the concepts you need to figure out stuff you don't know on the exam.I would recommend this as a study guide for the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep!
I'm glad I purchased this prep material. The practice tests along with the review had me well prepared for the exam.I passed with no problem. However, the practice tests are easier than the actual exam, so don't get over confident. You do have to study for the CLEPs.Good luck! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Refresher, Not All-You-Need
Personally, I was not as impressed with REA's CLEP Principles of Microeconomics book as I have been with other REA CLEP books in the past.I found that the review of microeconomics was just that--a review, not something you could pick up without a former knowledge of microeconomics and pass the exam.I ended up going onto the CLEP website and reading a textbook they recommended, because there simply wasn't enough information in the book to know what was going on.However, if someone had a background in microeconomics, this would be a great refresher.

The practice tests were great, although I wondered if in a few places they had the wrong answer (probably, though, I just didn't understand what they were saying). My one complaint about the answers is that they don't tell why the wrong answers were wrong. You just know that they can't be right because the answer that they write about is the right answer.

Overall, it's a good book for preparing for the CLEP exam, but you will probably need another textbook as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Resource
Having just taken the Microeconomics CLEP test yesterday I can give a review of this book and CD.I bought the book several months ago and found the reading to be difficult. If you don't know a lot about the subject I don't think this book will be enough - at least it wasn't for me.The first test from the CD I took was very difficult and I didn't pass. The best thing I did was get the Economics for Dummies book and read the 150 page section on microeconomics. The material covered everything that the CLEP exam will test you on and the reading, while longer, is easier to understand and assimilate.Another good source of information is a website called Instacert, which charges$20/month and has lots of good info on the subject. After finishing the Dummies book I took the second practice test and got a scaled score of 55 (50 is passing) and decided to give the real test a shot the next day.I managed to pass the CLEP coinicidentally with the same 55 score.

I think that this book is essential to people who have little background in the subject matter like me.What I found more helpful than the text were the two sample tests. The great thing about them is that they give detailed explainations of each question, so if you miss one you get some extra instruction about what you need to know.Just keep in mind that you don't need to ace the test, just score a solid C and collect your credits, so there's no reason to study too hard for this test. All told, I probably spent 15-20 hours reading and taking practice tests.

My best advice is to buy this one and the Dummies book.Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars With half a brain you can pass this test
They key to these Clep tests is read, take notes, read again, take practice test, read again, take next test. Sounds like a lot of work but it isn't that bad - about 6 hours worth. Much better than 40 hours in the classroom and about 15% of the cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars good practice
It provides a good evaluation of your knowledge, helps to determine what you know, as well as where you are drawing some blanks. I'd say that real Microeconomics CLEP is a little easier than the practice tests in this book, which is fine - it's good practice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good value for the price...just don't use it as your only prep resource.
The good: The book has 2 practice tests, with answers. This let me simulate taking the CLEP tests, the go back and grade myself. By looking at the questions I missed, I was able to identify the specific concepts that needed extra attention.
The bad: The concept reviews are pretty worthless. Don't try to learn the concepts from this book. Use it only to evaluate where you are in your preparation, and whether you're ready for the real test. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not extremely helpful...
I am thoroughly un-impressed with this book. Explanations of fundamental and even basic concepts are hazy and tough to interdigitate with mentally. The book launches into the Precalculus review at an advanced level - if you don't already know a significant amount of Precalculus you'll be absolutely lost from the start.

Here are my recommendations for any fellow students wishing to CLEP Precalculus. It IS a very doable test. PLEASE - do not let the practice tests in this book deceive you!! The 3 practice tests are pythonically hard.If I would have paid attention to them I would never have taken the Clep. I just took the actual Clep yesterday and passed easily. The actual Clep is far easier than REA's practice tests, Peterson's practice tests, and the official Clep Study Guide practice test.

The book that I found extremely useful in prepping for this Clep was Precalculus Demystified. I got it right here from Amazon. Infinitely more helpful than this REA Clep guide.

Before that I went through Saxon's mathematics lineup.

This test is very passable. Just don't get discouraged by the practice tests out there. And don't waste your time with this book, unless you already know a good deal of precalculus and just want a very quick (and unintelligible) review.
Precalculus Demystified on the other hand is perfect. If you want to pass, get Precalculus Demystified.
Pre-Calculus Demystified

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but other materials necessary
I have mixed feelings for this review book. Everything in there was helpful, but their examples were much harder than what was actually on the test. While some may find this useful, especially if you have ample time to prepare for the exam, I was basically cramming and found the difficult examples cumbersome. I would suggest using the official outline of the exam (freely available) and then using internet resources to study. There are many other resources out there for precalculus, and while they're not specifically for the CLEP, the examples will probably be easier to understand. If you have time to prepare for the exam, this book may be worth the purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best review
This book works out problems said to be similar to the CLEP test, but doesn't give problems for the reader to work out, except for the practice tests themselves. It's similar to getting ready for a race by watching other people run; looks easy until you must do it. If you need a good review of the material, or need to learn the topics in the test, this is not the book to use. ... Read more
