4-0 out of 5 stars I like it - a nice alternative to Kaplan and MGMAT
I liked the book - it is positioned as a Math Course, but I'd say it is a bit too intense. It jumps right away into pretty high level and dense material, so the best use for this book if you are aiming for a high quant score and willing to sweat for it. If you are just starting out, I'd probably suggest to start with Kaplan Math workbook and then grab this book (Kaplan seemed to have been laid out a bit better, but definitely not as detailed and did not include much of probability, combinations, statistics questions).

THE GOOD:
* Probably one of the most thorough GMAT quant books though sometimes a tad over the top
* Has good coverage of exotic question types: probability, statistics, combinations, fuctnions, counting, etc
* Questions arranged in Easy, Medium, Hard sections - you can skip right away to the harder questions or vice versa
* Some strategy elements
* Diagnostic test in the book
* Data sufficiency practice (about 100 questions)
* Tons of practice questions and a fair share of hard ones

THE BAD:
* Not a book for beginners and assumes familiarity with basic strategies and format of the test; has a potential to frustrate a person who is just getting into it
* 500+ pages - easy to get bogged down and can take quite a while to cover
* Does not point out which items are critical/most important to remember
* Structured in a slightly unorthodox fashion (pretty much starts with symbol-type questions and then jumps to Geometry)
* Does not help spot some of the easier solutions, but instead does a head-on approach (which is probably more reliable, but takes time)
* Has a few sections that may not be very important for the GMAT such as Graphs and Charts

Overall, good 500+ page math book and if nothing else, is a good collection of questions.
Let me know if you have any questions about this book,

Product Description
Comprehensive preparation for the Graduate Management Admission Test begins with an overview and introduction to the GMAT, which is a computer-adaptive test. A diagnostic test with answers precedes an extensive Â"Correct Your WeaknessesÂ" section, which presents separate chapters on essay writing, reading comprehension, sentence correction, critical reasoning, and math. Two full-length practice tests with questions that reflect recent GMATs are presented with answers, analyses, and directions for evaluating the test takerÂ's score. The manualÂ's concluding section discusses business school basics, with advice on choosing a school, coping with the application procedure, financing a business school education, and entering the job market. An enclosed CD-ROM presents two computer-adaptive GMAT practice tests plus computerized versions of the bookÂ's two practice tests. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
the software on the CD did not work as it should
1) It did not give me a score on an 800 scale at the end of the test
2) On some questions it did not allow me to change my answer even though I hadn't yet confirmed my response (i.e I hadn't yet moved on to the next question, I had merely clicked on a response)
3) Worst of all were the reading comprehension questions. In the actual GMAT the tester is presented in with a passage and all questions related to the passage are listed together. Not so on the Barron's CD - the software presents questions related to reading comprehension in random order across the test. So you could get reading comprehension passage # 1, followed by one question related to passage #1; then some sentence correction questions then a reading comprehension passage #2, followed by 1 question related to passage #2; then another question related to passage # 1.
4) there were numerous typos

1-0 out of 5 stars THE WORST POSSIBLE CD YOU COULD IMAGINE
ALL THIS CD HAS IS BUGS.NICE PRODUCT TESTING BARRONS...I'LL BE SURE TO SING YOUR PRAISES AS I RECEIVE A 500 ON MY GMATS.This product is an absolute joke.I'm on the second to last question of a practice exam on the CD and it once again froze.I have no way of knowing if my answers were correct from the previous 2+ hours of work I did.I hate this product, and if you even consider buying this product you should already quit on the GMAT exam now. There were numerous times where it would give me a reading comprehension question, only they didn't give the corresponding article, so you just get to sit there and guess at a correct answer.

IF YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT YOU ARE AS UNINTELLIGENT AS THOSE WHO CREATED IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible business
took 2 weeks for book to arrive and when it got here it was damaged due to horrible packaging. the CD was shattered into a 100 pieces and when i returned the book i requested a full refund but i didn't and was still charged for shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great.
As a review guide, this book is fairly decent. Unfortunately, that's about where it ends. There are very few practice questions, and several of them are incorrect. Additionally, the CD that comes with this version - which nearly doubles the price - is almost completely worthless. The first question of one of the CAT tests had an error which made it unsolvable. On top of that, you can't save your progress if you don't want to do the entire exam.

If you see this at a garage sale, by all means, pick it up. But the "Pass Key" version of this book (which retains most of the review material and omits most examples) is a better buy, supplemented with the GMAC books or Kaplan. But if you're looking for a top-to-bottom study guide, I'd skip this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Where to start... First off, don't even put the CD in your computer! It's absolutely useless.
Take example 1: the questions for reading comp passages are not like in the GMAT, a series of 3-4 questions for an article at a time; instead, they randomly pop up articles during the test, which is particulary annoying, since you have to re-read the damn thing so many times.
Example 2: there is no scoring at the end of the test. They didn't even bother to try to guess the official scoring algorithm, they just tell you that if you get 0-10 questions wrong you did excellent or smth like that. That's no proper way of evaluating a CAT!
Example 3: most of the verbal question explanations are just plain stupid. "It's right because I say it's right", would be the best way to describe the author's attitude. You just need to take his word for it.
Example 4: Plenty of wrong problems! And I mean blatanly wrong, like a data sufficiency question coupled with problem solving answer options.

About the book: I have serious issues with books that cover tests but don't offer enough practice questions. This is probably the worst thing about this book: about 10-15 examples per verbal category, out of which only a handfull have decent explanations. The explanations/tipsgenerally subpar and they really didn't make an effort to make the whole learning experience more pleasant!

IMHO: buy the OG for practice questions and Kaplan for some decent strategies (they also offer smth like 50 practice questions per verbal section, which I thought was very useful). Also I've only heard positive reviews about the Manhattan books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't stand the layout
This book by no means contain the toughest questions.I've taken the test once, and believe me, it was harder. But this is not my biggest complaint about this book. Since, majority of the test banks found in GMAT books on the market are all around the same level-this one might even be a little tougher.
I simply cant stand the layout of this book!!!
I would rather have a chuck of questions and then see the answers+explanations in the next chuck!
This book would have 2-4 questions, and answers, another 2-4, another set of answers. It was driving me insane!I felt like my pace was broken and I was not able to "get in the zone".
I guess there are people that like to see the answer as soon as they are done with the problem.I simply find that distracting.
But then again, no book is perfect. It is VERY hard to find sets of questions that are identical to the real test and with comparable level of difficulties.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book. Worth the investment.
I used this book as a supplement to the official GMAT books, Kaplan course, and mba.com online tests. It gave me the extra practice I needed to master the tougher questions.

+ Comprehensive. Covers each topic with a few questions/explanations on each topic.
+ Organized by topic so you can skip to / focus on your primary areas of weakness
+ Because of the way it was structured, I didn't need to sift through a lot of information to get to the questions that I was looking for.
+ Excellent supplement to get extra practice on tough questions

- A few questions were repeats of the tougher questions in the online Kaplan GMAT course. But most of the questions were new to me after taking the Kaplan course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful - challenging practice content!
The book covers problems of all possible kinds and has very good practice content. The difficulty level might be slightly higher than that of the actual exam - but precisely for that reason, it will prepare you very well for a high score. The explanations for each problem solution and also the theory in every chapter is comprehensive and descriptive. While you practice, its important to read the explanations for the answers you got wrong and ALSO for the answers you got right - make sure you got them right for the right reasons.

The theory in the Sentence Correction chapter was especially useful. Even for the Data Sufficiency problems in Quant, the problems given in this book are well-chosen examples. If you get comfortable with the methodology to solve problems of every kind in this book (plus the OG11 official GMAT guide) I believe you would not have any surprises in the actual exam.

Wish you good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be retitled GMAT 700
I agree with the reviewer who says this book should be called GMAT 650-700. I was scoring in the low 700s before I got this book and found it to be a big waste of time. There are some hard 700-800 range questions, but the vast majority (like 80%) are not. I wasted a week on this book when I could've spent just a couple hours on the difficult questions, had I known which ones they were in advance. If you are shooting for 800, not 700, you're better off working off of the last questions in the Official Guide (these are purportedly the most difficult), trying out difficult math problems posted in GMAT forums and, as I did, working on your problem areas with the Manhattan GMAT quant guides. I scored a 51 on quant on the real GMAT, thanks to the Manhattan guides, NO thanks to Kaplan GMAT 800!

5-0 out of 5 stars Improved my score by 50 pts
Great book to use in conjunction with a more introductory study guide. If you want to score 700+, definitely invest in this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is all you need to prepare for GMAT!!!
This book is really all you need. I spent 3 months studying it and doing practice tests and did very well. The practice test in this book is the closest to the real test. Don't spend money and time on other books, I found the tests in others are not so great. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 10th Edition
<<<4-0 out of 5 stars Great for verbal , Sucks for Quant
You got have this book for scoring top percentile in verbal. its worth every penny and the questions in the verbal section are the closest to what you will see on the GMAT.

The book is a bad one for Quant, as most of the questions are real easy. That way it does not truly reflect what you see in the actual GMAT. Thats the reason for the 4 star rating. I would highly recommend KAPLAN for quant any day. Good luck people

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Necessary to Score High on the GMAT
I started preparing for the GMAT test approximately 8 weeks ago using the Offical Guide for GMAT Review, practicing roughly 40 questions per day. Since the Official Guide doesn't have much in the way of test taking techniques, I also used the Kaplan and the PR Verbal Workout. Aside from these books & the PowerPrep tests, there wasn't much else I used.

I took the test today and scored a 720, which closely matched my scores on the PowerPrep tests (720 and 740). On the Kaplan tests, I scored 630, 620, 680 (don't trust the Kaplan scores). In my assessment, the Official Guide practice questions are crucial for maximizing your score - you'll probably want to use the other test prep materials to learn some useful techniques, but the Official Guide MUST be used. Since the math in the Official Guide comes from the old paper-based test and has changed somewhat since then, I found the quantitative questions on the actual test to be slightly harder. I'd suggest supplementing with questions from the Kaplan for the math. For this reason, I gave the Official Guide 4-stars. Seems the Verbal questions haven't changed though - I found them to be quite similar to what I encountered in the Official Guide.

Practice as many questions as possible from the Official Guide and you'll be good to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing you'll need
I don't have much to add to all the great reviews for this book, but the one thing that's important to realize is that if you want to use the ETS PowerPreps as diagnostic tools, you should take both tests before you really get into the guide.I took the second Powerprep after I was done with the guide, and scored a nice ole 800.Of course the fact that I had seen about half of the questions tested in the guide made the accomplishment a slight bit less extraordinary.

Another thing - for the math section, even though all the questions in the guide are good practice, only the last 100 or so in each of the math sections look like anything you'll see on the test. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice companion to textbooks
Flashcards are a nice companion for textbooks to help with study on the go or a good way to stimulate your mind when the head is not cooperating.... maybe.

The Good:
1. 400 flashcards with a metal ring (don't recommend putting more than 100 on at the same time)
2. Physical, so you can write/make notes (use sharpie instead of pen - glossy paper takes a long time for pen inc to dry). Many have plenty of space where you can make notes and write your own questions/notations; pretty good paper and a neat ring. Nice box and overall great presentation that encourages to keep using the cards
3. Includes both strategies and questions
4. Split equally 200 verbal and 200 quant cards; SC dominates the Verbal section though there is a decent RC coverage (strategy but no questions)
5. Each card is numbered - very helpful

The Bad:
1. Very strong inc/paper smell (not related really but it bugs me)
2. Not that many of hard questions/concepts
3. Based on Barron's GMAT book
4. Fairly quick to go through on a plane/train/bus - would like some more

Bottom Line: Decent set of cards to compliment a good set of Kaplan or Manhattan GMAT books

1-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan are crooks - their books are full of mistakes.
Buy with great care - recent Kaplan GMAT prep books have been littered with printing errors. The extent of the mistakes is shameful, and when you raise it with their customer service, they respond with silence.

I wouldn't give these con-artists a penny more of my money and would urge anyone considering buying one of their products to tread with care.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended--the book lacks structure and doesn't cater well to top GMAT scorers
I self studied and scored a 770 on the GMAT.Here are my thoughts on the Kaplan GMAT Advanced book:

===== OVERVIEW =====

Kaplan GMAT Advanced 2009-2010 Edition is one of the few GMAT books on the market specifically designed to appeal to the high scorer. The previous edition of the book was called Kaplan 800. There are no significant differences between the two editions. At times it seems Kaplan just replaced "800" with "Advanced" in the tips boxes and in the section forewords (example: at the very beginning of the book, Kaplan claims you can get an "Advanced on the GMAT!"I think this originally read "800 on the GMAT!"), so buying the newest edition is not really worth it if you already have an older one.

The extent to which the problems presented by the Kaplan book are advanced is... debatable. This is because there is no clear cut way of assigning such a subjective characteristic to scores: does "advanced" mean over 600 (66th percentile)? Or does it mean over 760 (99th percentile)? If you consider a test taker with a 700 (90th percentile) an advanced one, than this book does not deliver, particularly in the quantitative portion. Questions you'll find in Kaplan Advanced:

* 42 Critical Reasoning
* 31 Reading Comprehension
* 112 Sentence Correction
* 98 Problem Solving
* 37 Data Sufficiency

===== PROS =====

* Generous math word problems section, with 56 Problem Solving and 18 Data Sufficiency questions. On my test day, math word problems required the most effort for me, so I would advise any GMAT hopeful to allot proper attention to these kinds of problems

* Kaplan Advanced lives up to the reputation of the Live Online program and provides a substantial list of practice problems - no less than 320, which means you'll get a pretty decent amount of practice material for a good price

===== CONS =====

* The strategy in this book is scattered, in my opinion. There are no condensed reviews at the beginning of each chapter and tips sort of just "pop up" in answer explanations. There's no clear structure to learning, just practice. This book could have been a good quick reference for some tough strategy, but unfortunately this is not the case

* Although marketed as an advanced guide, the book does not live up to my personal perception of intensive prep. This is particularly obvious if you evaluate the overall quantitative portion of the book, since topics such as permutations, combinations, probabilities, and statistics are not covered sufficiently. These math topics are the ones that scare even well-prepared students, so I would have expected Kaplan to devote entire chapters to them

* As is the case with Kaplan GMAT 2010 Premier Live Online, I didn't think the practice questions mimicked the actual GMAT very well. I thought this was particularly the case for Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension. The quality of the questions does not match that of the The Official Guide for GMAT Review series.

* The book is not balanced, since there are huge differences in the numbers of problems. Also, since Data Sufficiency is a type of problem unique to the GMAT, it should have been covered more thoroughly - only 37 questions is too little as compared to the 98 questions in the Problem Solving section

===== BOTTOM LINE =====

Kaplan Advanced gets only one star out of five mainly because I think it lacks structure. If you ask me what matters most in preparing for the GMAT, concepts or practice, and I'll tell you that it's concepts. The fact that the book is almost 100% concerned with practice without proper (advanced) content review means that there will be no solid conceptual framework for drills. Additionally, the questions themselves do not meet my standards of advanced prep. However, if you're looking for a resource of math word problems and sentence correction questions, this book is definitely worth a look.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not pleased!
I agree with one of the reviewers here. This book just serves to outline the dificult questions. This is not a guide or does not explain any strategies.
I would definitely not recommend this to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exact Copy of Older Versions - Save your money!
I bought this book because I figured it would provide extra questions.I already had the 2004 GMAT 800 book.

I was very disappointed to see that every single page is IDENTICAL with the two books.

You would think that Kaplan would be able to come up with new questions in 5 years.

Do yourself a favour - buy a used older edition and save some money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Guidebook but a Good Question Collection
I am not blasting this book - I am giving you a rating based on the expectation that the description of this book sets. It does not live up and you are bound to be disappointed. However, it is actually a valuable book but you need to be aware of what you are buying and probably how to use it best when you buy it:

As a pure guidebook - 1 star
As a question collection - 3.5 stars

What You Will Find Inside:
28 Critical reasoning questions
31 Reading comprehension questions
110 Sentence correction questions
107 Problem solving questions (only 7 of which cover combinations and probability)
37 Data Sufficiency questions

Issues that I had with this book:

* No review of math principles or grammar rules. This book assumes that you have gone through the Kaplan's main GMAT book. If you need help with basics look into getting the Math or Verbal Workbooks before getting this one.

* Illogical structure. Instead of the typical approach of providing a rule and then questions to practice that rule on, this book just lists questions in each of the sections. All of the valuable information and tips are scattered around the explanations section. The book assumes you will read/review explanations for every question. In defense, the main point is often emphasized, so they are not too hard to find.

* Question difficulty. Fewer than 50 people per year score 800 on the GMAT, and most of the lucky guys get past 700. To appeal to a broad audience, Kaplan designed this book at a 650/700-level

* Math section is fairly easy and lacks meaningful practice in advanced subjects such as probability, combinations, or coordinate geometry, statistics. If these are your weak areas, you should look elsewhere

Items I found valuable:

* The book does what it was supposed to do - provide advanced selection of questions, giving the necessary practice with relevant questions. Though Kaplan's questions are not one-for-one official GMAT questions, I found them fairly close overall. I also liked the explanations - they were very detailed

* Good verbal section with valuable RC practice; huge selection of SC's

* Good quality publishing and paper; good layout

* Price - I thought it was worth every penny :)

FYI: This book is the re-branded edition of a book previously called Kaplan GMAT 800.
One reason Kaplan changed the name of this book is that it did not live up to expectations - it was not a book for those aiming for 750+ but rather for those seeking 650+.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reinforcement
Try these first to review math and/or vocabulary you haven't seen for awhile. Just the basics are presented and I found I already knew some of the answers, but other times, the cards filled in the gaps. That's what's good about flash cards, you can pull out the ones you don't need. Can't do that with a work book unless you want to rip out some pages and use a lot of white out!! The software and the cards were both helpful; the same information in two different forms. Thanks, Exambusters. You've covered it all and given me more confidence!

4-0 out of 5 stars IMPROVED VOCABULARY
Helped me to prepare for the exam. I tried taking sample tests in some review books, but ended up turning to the cards first for review, then those sample tests were easier to tackle. The vocabulary section was really helpful. Some of the words I learned came up on the exam, and as a separate bonus my reading comprehension and working vocabulary in general have improved. I've tried to add these "well-educated" words to my every day speech which sometimes annoys my friends but impresses anyone over thirty!

5-0 out of 5 stars INEXPENSIVE TOOL FOR REVIEW - HELPED WITH SEVERAL CLASSES; SOFTWARE SCREENSAVER TEACHES BY OSMOSIS
I bought several courses. The cards offer basic concepts in small bites. The information was relevant to what was presented by my teacher. The cards and CD's gave good review before exams and a head start at the start of the new school year. The cards had a lot of questions; you can carry them in your pocket and learn a few each day. The software was easy to use. It is like the cards but on the screen. You can take a test or just review. Front is question, click for answer on back of card. The software can also show the cards on the screen at random, first the question, then the answer. They change every few seconds. That keeps you reading and wondering what's coming up next. It's entertaining while you're studying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not specific to the GMAT at all
These are just general review cards -- they don't really prepare you for taking the GMAT.They are interesting for keeping up on general pre-calc math and vocab though.

I prefer the Princeton Review products, though they don't have flashcards.Cracking the GMAT with DVD, 2008 Edition (Graduate Test Prep)

1-0 out of 5 stars This product is NOT specific to the GMAT
About 200 cards are strictly centered on vocabulary words, which are NOT on the GMAT. How could I actually believe that this company even KNOWS what's on the GMAT? I completely lost confidence in the product and will never us it. What a waste of money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick shipping..books in good condition
I really liked the books as they looked pretty new.. also quick shipping..
Happy for purchasing from this seller..

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need to study for the GMAT
This and all the other Manhattan GMAT guides were really helpful in helping me prep for the GMAT.My colleagues had recommended them over other guides and I continue to do the same after getting the score I needed on my first try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for math virgins wanting to take or retake the gmat
The Manhattan series was the most helpful for me on my GMAT because other GMAT prep books only shows time saving or test taking tips but does not go into details about the various topics which I needed because I don't have a strong quantitative base.In fact, I didn't know even the basic idea of number properties or even odd plus odd is even (must have been asleep in math class) and so these guides were a must for me.Except for the critical reasoning guide, I give them all five stars +++!

Too bad I found these guides too late (just 2 weeks before the exam) and by the time they arrived in the mail, I didn't have time to do any of the practice exercises but I still managed to improve my score from 500 to 640 from just skimming through these guides.640 may not be a high score, but for someone who didn't know what a cube root is two weeks before the exam, these guides sure did a good job getting me up to speed. In my situation, these guides were heaven sent.

If you're really good with math then they might be too easy and too basic for you.Even then, they would still serve as a nice 'refresher'.They are short and concise and it only took me about an hour or less to skim through each and so they are pricey if you're just using them for a quick review. But if you don't know math like I don't know math, BUY THEM ALL!!! THEY ROCK!

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth
this is really worthless book, a school kid will know more math than in this book, the book is not helpful to get even decent score..

5-0 out of 5 stars Major improvement over the previous version
The geometry portion of GMAT has become much more difficult over the years. GMAT rarely test the basics (what is an area of a triangle?), but GMAT tests such things as "find the midpoint of a perpendicular bisector of a line with with equation y=mx+b".

The explanation of triangles and all its intricacies are explained in detail, such as a height of a triangle can be any perpndicular side of a base of a triangle even though the height is external to the triangle.

The book really shines in coordinate geometry. It provides very good explainations of finding intersection of two lines and perpendicular bisectors.

I highly recommend this book to those who are preparing for GMAT. ... Read more

Product Description

* Score high on the GMAT. Get accepted to the Business School of your dreams.

* Comprehensive coverage of all problem types: Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Analytical Writing.

* 200 all-star problems to ensure you score high on the GMAT.

Ace the GMAT lends candidates a secret recipe for use in mastering GMAT study. Each hand-selected problem comes with a novel Classification, Snapshot, and Chili Rating. Classification tells you what category a problem belongs to. Snapshot highlights why that particular problem is chosen, as well as any special insights or problem-solving approaches that are deemed relevant. A Chili Rating helps candidates judge the estimated difficulty level of a given problem. A single chili indicates that a problem is "mild" (500 to 600 difficulty level), two chilies spell "hot" (600 to 700 difficulty level), and three chilies denote "very hot" (700 or above difficulty level).

Along with answers and detailed explanations, there arguably exists no other learning tool to help you tackle GMAT study at a high level in a more focused, efficient manner. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all impressed - sloppy mistakes
I am unclear as to how this book as 5 or 4 star reviews. I found so many editorial mistakes in here, including typos and changes from what the question asked to what the answer states the question to be. Ex: #104. The question gives us data sufficiency statement #2: a>c, but then the answer refers to data sufficiency #2 as b>c, which completely (obviously) changes what the answer should be. There are so many errors like this in the book.

Also, another very large error occurs on page 31, giving the surface area of a cylinder as (2 pie r squared) + (2 pie r squared times h). *Note to book writer, the actual formula for surface area of a cylinder is (2 pie r squared) + (2 pie r times h) **there is no square in the second half of the formula. When I saw that formula error, I knew immediately I could not trust this book to be correct. I kept doing the problems just for the sake of practice and found over 10 typos. I have not even gotten to the verbal yet and I am not sure that I will bother.

The problems are way too easy. There are not enough three chili peppers, which are supposed to be the hardest problems (that is how the problems are rated). Most of the problems are only one or two chili peppers. This book is completely not worth the $30 I spent. My suggestion to people looking for the best practice books - use Manhattan GMAT books. They are absolutely worth it. But make sure you practice enough tests using the actual GMAC exams. They will give you best idea of problems on the test. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books to use
This book is just okay. There are better books on the market which will help you much more than this one, such as GMAT review v. 12 or something with a little more substance. If you have limited time to study ( 2 month or less) go for a different book.

2-0 out of 5 stars I used this book and scored 510 on the GMAT
1 - The first few chapters gave helpful points about how to approach the test, especially the essay part.
2 - The math practice questions were just like the test, but the explanations to the answers weren't very helpful.
3 - The English questions were just like the test and the explanations were better written than the explanations for the math answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you devote the time to it.
"Ace the GMAT" is a great book in preparation for the Graduate Management Admissions Test. I would recommend getting a head start on studying, as it can take a while to digest all of it.If you're like me and have forgotten all the stuff you learned in high school math, take a month or so and give yourself the time to actually review the material.Make sure you're not wasting your money.Give yourself time to study before the exam.

I subtracted one star due to the fact that there are typos within the book, and they seem to be careless ones.Just be careful to look for those mistakes, as many can be found.

Overall, it is a good product.I did only decent on the exam (fortunately I only had to take it once), but if I had devoted more time to learning the strategies laid out I know I could have done much better.I did very well on the AWA portion, however, and I have to say that the guidelines laid out in that section are a surefire way to receive a 6.

Also, the problems in this book are harder than those in the The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition. They are also more representative of the exam's difficulty.Do not study the Official GMAT book alone and expect to do well. The questions are not as hard, there are limited explanations and you will not score as high.(I used both to study in preparation for my exam in February.)

So, in conclusion:

-Allow yourself time to actually use this book. Results do not occur overnight.
-The AWA portion, if memorized, can allow you to do extremely well in that section.
-The problems in here are harder than those in The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition, but are more representative of what will be on the exam.
-Practice practice practice!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
This is a good introduction to the GMAT and how it works. If you need more specialized practice I would suggest purchasing the subject specific guides published by GMAC which makes the GMAT test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good GMAT book
Good book for the subject matter. It's long and challenging, but if it was easy, then there wouldn't be the need for a GMAT exam. I would suggest using this, along with a GMAT class in order to get the best results (no matter the testing company).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Prep Book
I was thinking of trying the GMAT and got this book for Chirstmas. The book is pretty good. It's got a nice pace to it, sample tests, and overall is easy to read.I thought it explained things well in its specific sections on how to do things and gave pretty good tips on what you should expect going into the test. It's easy to understand and you should get what you need from it.If possible, you really might want to go to your local library and see if they have some of these.Even if it's from a year or so ago, it might help as an addition to this one if not a substitute.

Anyway, things changed so I didn't end up taking the test and probably won't for at least quite some time, so I can't really say for certain if it will help with the real test, but unless the test is wildly different from what the book shows it should give you some good preperation.I have read some places though that it might be on the easy end of things, so if you have taken the test before, try looking for some of the more advanced books on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not receive item
I did not receive the item that I ordered, but instead got a random book. When I emailed them about this issue they could not resend me the book because they had sold it to someone else. At least they are paying for the postage on the way back, but I was really wanting this book fast and did not want to have to wait another week for a new vendor to send me one. Make sure the price is not to good to be true when you buy from them, or they might sell it under your nose to someone who is willing to pay more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes, mistakes and even more mistakes
I was very excited when I found this book as it's been a while since I've done any math. The book gives a good overview of the basic math concepts needed for the GMAT.
However, it is disgraceful that a book with that many mistakes was ever published - for example, the Geometry review test has mistakes in every question containing a diagram! I am now going to buy the Manhattan Series as this book has completely put me off Kaplan's review books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with errors!
This book is loaded with errors.I'm only 112 pages in and I have already found 4 major errors. The idea of this book is good, and the basic concepts that it teaches are good as well. But if you don't want a book with errors, then stay away from this one!I wish I had read the reviews before buying the book, because I would have never bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for basic brush-up, but the errors do not inspire confidence.
I always check Amazon reviews, except this time... I was browsing in Borders, looking for a GMAT math prep book, and the back cover caught my eye: "Did you know that you learned all the math concepts tested on the GMAT in high school?" That's just what I needed, since I finished high school 28 years ago and last took the GMAT 18 years ago. (I did well, I might add!) I couldn't even remember how to solve for "x", so I really needed a book like this. It explains concepts very well. However, the errors are very disconcerting. The one that really got me was the same that another reviewer caught -- the unlabeled triangle on page 219. Then there is the "rectangle ABCD below" on page 221. It's not a rectangle, and it's not labeled ABCD. I could go on, but I'd rather have my $25 back.

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors abound
I purchased this book from a bookstore since it caught my eye and I needed help with Math for the GMAT.I should have at least looked at the Amazon reviews (which I ALWAYS do for everything else I purchase), because I would have been warned on the mistakes.I have no idea how this even made it to the printers since there are several mistakes.Although annoying, I'm not sure that it takes away from a great deal of the content. But at the same time, it does seem simplistic. If you haven't had math in a long time, then get it.Otherwise, look for something more challenging.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?
I bought this book and opened it up when I got home... To my shock, I found at least 3 errors just browsing through random pages.

Things like: 'What is the area of triangle ABC below?' and the triangle is labelled 'HIJ' or something to that effect...

This book was seriously not even proof read -it is that bad. [...]... What a waste!

Do yourself a favor and do NOT get this book. Or, at the least, go to a book store and look through it to verify how horrendous the mistakes are... Clearly this book wasn't proof read. Just because the economy is not doing well doesn't mean customers deserve a crap product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great strategic approach
This Veritas Prep book is an excellent guide to tackling the reading comprehension section of the GMAT. It teaches a good overall strategy and provides useful insider tips. Specifically, the STOP strategy works well to deconstruct the passages quickly and efficiently. Using the strategy, I have a framework in place as I am reading, allowing me to isolate the main messages and critical facts of the paragraphs. When you reach the questions, you almost know what they are going to ask, and the insider tips helps to avoid the incorrect choices and pick the right answer. Great tool and approach to tackling the test.

Another positive is that even after the test, this made me a better reader. It helps you understand how a good passage should be written - helping you read efficiently going forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the book
Extremely well written and great passages, they exactly replicate the GMAT, neither too easy nor too difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides good practice...
The question sets are quite good... Some of the toughest GMAT relevant sets I have seen.. If you do well on these, there is no way you wont do well on the actual GMAT RC. So this book can be very helpful in gauging your preparation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Comprehension Book Review
I used Veritas Prep's Reading Comprehension book as a guide for approaching this time-consuming but important component of the GMAT Verbal section.Because the GMAT is computer-adaptive, the better you're doing on the Verbal section, the tougher the Reading Comp passages will be.The subject matter becomes abstract (ex - different approaches to studying double helix DNA) and unclear if you don't have a strategy to guide you while you're reading.I found VP's framework for Reading Comp to be the most concise and reliable of any other GMAT prep materials (I had also referenced Kaplan and Princeton Review prior to VP).This book is very clear and its principles will save you tons of valuable time on the GMAT's Verbal section - don't let yourself fall behind on time like so many do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the difference on the Verbal score
As you probably know, you can make the biggest improvement on your GMAT score by nailing the Verbal.I picked up the Veritas prep books when I decided I needed to retake the GMAT and improve my score. Not surprisingly, I was particularly interested in the various books for the Verbal section of the test. This Reading Comp book really helped me develop a strategy for efficiently tackling RC problems without getting bogged down in lots of re-reading.Ultimately, I was able to significantly boost my verbal score in part because I used this RC book from Veritas. ... The authors tell you up front: "The GMAT is not easy--nor isthis book."While that may seem daunting, the test is challenging fora reason, and if you want to get into the top business schools, you'llneed to excel in a very competitive field. If you're willing to workhard, the GMAT Prep Course will show you the ropes and get youto score your best. Its refreshing, no-nonsense style reflects theauthors' insistence that it is hard work, not tricks or insiderknowledge, that brings success.

An orientation chapter sets the scene and guides you through thebasics of what you'll find inside: overviews of each test section(including the essays) with lots of sample questions and in-depthanalyses of correct and incorrect answers. No frills here, just lotsof practice and some general help with the types of questions youshould expect, such as analogies and data sufficiency. While somereaders might miss the flashy design or eye-catching logos of thecompetitors, the authors maintain that attention and diligence are allthat's needed to beat the GMAT. If you're up to the challenge, get theGMAT Prep Course and start burning the midnight oil. --RobLightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good deal
It was shipped on time and the book is great for someone who hasn't had math for a while. It reviews many basic concepts which Kaplan and Princeton assume you know them. If one has been out of school for a while and is weak in math, this is a good book to start. If you do think you are good in math but only a little rusty I'd suggest Kaplan or Princeton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for tips, tricks and strategies for GMAT
NOVA's GMAT preparation book is a very useful guide for overall GMAT preparation. It has very good strategies for solving GMAT problems.

For Math section, the theory part is very solid with lot of examples and sample problems on each topic. It first teaches the theory, followed some relatively easy questions directly based on the preceding theory notes. It helps to practice those concepts. Then, there will be additional questions to practice the whole topic.

For Verbal section, they have very good concepts and strategies on RC, CR & SC. I specially liked their Critical Reasoning part. For every section, they take you through their strategy, solve some examples using it and then make you practice more questions.

Analytical Writing section is excellent with a detailed description of each style and how to approach the writing task.

I didn't used their online course or simulated exams, so can't review them. But in general, their level of questions is pretty close to GMAT. I will recommend it to use with The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition and Sentence Correction GMAT Preparation Guide (Manhattan GMAT Preparation Guides).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for math foundation

This book is second to none when it comes to math review. However, you may consider the Princeton Review(PR) for Data Sufficiency. I haven't really used the book for the verbal portion as I am happy with the PR's version -- though it is a bit too easy. Currently, I am preparing with the OG, PR and Nova. This should be sufficient for a local university I am trying to 'apply to' (Whoa! Is that an idiom?:)). Best of luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
I read some other reviews stating this book helped you.I don't know how you managed that, but cheers. There are more errors in this book than I have ever seen in a professionally published work. The answer descriptions are weak at best, and their relations to the questions asked are awkward and obscure.I made a special note to review this to warn off anyone considering the purchase.Stay away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bleah software
Perhaps the book itself is a nice enough book on preparing for the GMAT, but the software on the CD accompanying this book has to be the worst ever designed for testing. And the online course (while looking slick) is pretty much a rehash of the CD. An example that I have given below is pretty much symptomatic of the software design.

While doing one of the full-length tests, in the verbal section, I was answering the first reading comprehension section. After I spent about 2 minutes reading through the passage, I answered the first question. Instead of taking me to the next question about the same passage, it immediately took me to a completely new reading comprehension passage and asked me a question there! And this happened with all the reading comprehension passages. I am sure the GMAT is not a sissy test, but surely even ETS would not play with your mind by switching around passages like this.

For those in my situation (I already hold a graduate degree and had about 4 weeks to study for the GMAT): get the Kaplan guide (with accompanying CD) and perhaps the Barron's guide. That may be all you need. However, I sincerely think you need more computer-based questioning than the full-length practice tests that most of these moron testing guides give us. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless piece of crap
It won't allow me to give negative stars, or I would. This book goes through a useful page and a half telling you how the computerized GMAT testing works and how different it is from paper tests, then proceeds to give you five paper tests. What sort of moron publishes a book that announces its own uselessness in the first chapter?

This book is a worthless piece of crap.Don't buy it.Your money is better spent twisting the bills into rolls and setting them on fire. You have a better chance of improving your score by paying $30 to an illiterate homeless person to take the test for you.

I am in the process of contacting Barron's to get my money back.

2-0 out of 5 stars included software is terrible
I have quite a few complaints about this book.

1) The CD is an exact copy of the text of the book.I am not quite sure what the point of the book is now that I have the CD.

2) The software doesnt give you a score on your practice tests!Even the free software that is available from GMAT.com will score your practice test! This software also will not score your essay, you are supposed to have a friend score it for you.(Again, the free software at GMAT.com will score it for you).

3) When "reading the book" from the CD, the format is awful. For example, the math review section is 97 pages long. The controls are "Forward" and "Back".If you dont read it all in one sitting, you have to click "Next" until you get to where you stopped.

My advice:Buy another book, and download the free software from GMAT.com.

3-0 out of 5 stars In combination with Official Review GMAT book, not that bad
I recently started the study for the GMAT and initially I bought the GMAT review book from Barron's, 12th edition. Even though the passages are sometimes too long and too outdated, the review sections of each type of question I have found very helpfull. Together with the Official Review GMAT book I believe I will have a good change to succeed in the test. Also, I just got some software exercises which really should help me master the test.

2-0 out of 5 stars There is better prep material out there
This book the typical job of explaning the test, and what is going to be tested, and will review you over the basic types of quesitons that the test has. Then the book gives you a pretest to let you know where you stand, and then it begins to give you some review sections.

The review sections are pretty good, but they are not helpful if you are someone that needs to brush up on a subject. In fact, they do tell you they are no substitute to real knowledge. So you might want to keep that in mind.

The next sections of the book are a series of practice tests that are good exercises to go through, but some people claim some of the answers are wrong, and I did find a few typos in the book.So it is a little frustrating to work through.

The computer software disk, is worthless.Other books such as the Princeston review's disk has LOTS of questions. This book computerized the first exam in the book only. Not exactly helpful, not adaptive, so don't look for a lot of help.

Now this book might be good if you just want to sit down and do problems similar to the ones on the exam.If you are looking for a reach coach, or anything that is adaptive, this book isn't much help.Personally, I wouldn't purchase the book, but if someone had a copy laying around, I'd pick it up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad
This book really wastes money because its stuff is outdated and
biased. You will find this book can not improve your scores on actual GMAT test if you are studying GMAT through this book.
In verbal section, SC and RC are very poor because they have
dissimilar with actual test. Really, not buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ books
In order to get a real GMAT prep - I would recommend you use the EZ Solutions series of 10 books, or whichever book(s) you think you need most help with. These books are very detailed oriented and cover everything on the GMAT math. First use the review modules to get the concepts and then use the workbooks for practice. Some of the most challenging math topics, such as basic arithmetic and number properties, algebraic concepts, complex word problems, logical reasoning problems, etc., are brilliantly explained in these books. Just because of the high price of the book, you can skip the math strategies book. However, the EZ basic workbook is a good refresher to get started and advanced workbook is a "must have" if you are aiming for a high score.

After doing all this, use the OG and you will see a dramatic difference in your scores. You don't even have to take any of those pricy courses. I followed this process and my scores have jumped from the 500-range to the 700-range. Good luck in your prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I really enjoyed this book; working through the problems was easy to follow. Regarding studying for the GMAT test this book is all you will ever need for the Algebra section. Excellent book - well done EZ Solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book for GMAT Data Sufficiency!
This book is by far the best material I have seen for the fiddly data sufficiency format. This book breaks down the entire data sufficiency mechanism in a very easy to understand system. It will remove any confusion related to how the data sufficiency system works. It also has many techniques about how to tackle the data sufficiency questions and which statement to consider first. The author does an excellent job at making the data sufficiency process so manageable. There are more than hundred practice questions to give you ample practice. Highly recommended for anyone seeking help with the data sufficiency.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont Buy -NOT Worth it- Please read before buying
I bought this book hoping that it would help me practice Data sufficiency.
I am hugely disappointed in this book- that is to say the least.

Here is why-
1- The quality of questions are way way low-basically it is designed for those targetting below 500 score
2- Many questions have errors in it.
3- Total lack of creativity on the part of the writer. I can not imagine why someone will write a book like this and hope it would sell. But unfortunately there are are buyers like me who fall into the trap of "more practice material" and spend the money on horrible books like these

If you took the time and read upto this stage- take my advice and DONT buy this book
You will thank me

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
I am thankful for these books. They are far more in-depth than any of the other sources I have used. The Math Section Data Sufficiency is an excellent book. Its practical, organized well and my mind is just clicking with the information in a way that it didn't using other sources.I did not spend money on expensive courses; I invested in the EZ Solutions Series and its made all the difference in the world.I recommend this series you are aiming for success through a high score. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be edited carefully.
    I found 2 errors already.
    1) Page 17, Q.11: Are all cars in the parking lot brown or blue? Otherwise, answer is wrong.
    2) Page 84, circle diagram is all wrong.

    An ambiguous question:
    1) Page 18, Q.15: is 'a' an integer? Otherwise, the question/solution pair are wrong and too hard to do without a calculator.

A book of this type cannot afford to have even one mistake when it comes to questions and answers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Low quality, very different from the official guide
I got this one after finishing the official guide, hoping to get more computer-based practice, but the book was a disappointment.

    1. The practice problems in the book are quite different from the official guide, in the way how the questions are constructed.

    2. Practice sets in the CD-ROM are of extremely low quality. While reviewing my results of the first practice set, I found 5 questions in the verbal section that they marked the wrong answer. For example, I picked E, they marked it wrong in the result and put the check mark on option B, but at the same time in the explanation stated "So E is the correct answer".

    3. Many repeated questions in the math session across the 4 computer-based practice. I moved to the 2nd practice set and saw at least 5 to 6 questions that were identical as in the 1st practice set that I just finished.

I hesitate to continue using the book given its poor quality, which could bring an extremely low ROI to your study time.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book has ISSUES and sets wrong expectations
I prefer to ignore books that are not the best or have issues instead of writing negative reviews but I feel I need to give a word of warning to a few test takers. However, I won't bash the book; instead I will just point out issues it has and hopefully this will result into a better preparation for you with or without this book.

    ....ISSUES....
    1. LACK OF CONTENT. This is probably the shortest GMAT Book I have seen - only 182 pages are dedicated to the GMAT overview and that includes everything (AWA, Quant, Verbal, practice questions, etc)

    2. WEAK STRATEGIES. The real test for a good GMAT Book is the CR/RC strategies it provides since these sections are hard to prepare for and only a consistent and solid strategy is what can help. This book has strategies that are correct and good but are too general to make a difference

    3. FEW PRACTICE QUESTIONS. As mentioned above 182 pages are dedicated to the GMAT and are inclusive of practice problems/questions. There are 4 tests included in the book (which take half of the pages).

    4. PAPER TESTS. There are 4 in the book, which offsets the lack of practice questions but at the same time there is a big issue with paper tests - the fact that they are on paper, not adaptive, and do not provide you with a GMAT score, not even an approximate one.

    5. COMPUTER TESTS. They are adaptive (good) but consist of separate Quant and Verbal sections that are not packaged as a test, missing the AWA section, and don't provide a GMAT Score at the end of the test(Wow, really?). The interface of the tests on the CD is quite different from the Official GMAT as well as the process of confirming answers. Here each question is numbered, there is an arrow right, and the timer shows time in minutes only and cannot be hidden

    6. A few other minor inconsistencies that are not worth bothering with such as wrong book cover on the CD tests, etc.
Also, the 2010 and 2011 editions are pretty much identical with exception of 5 vs 4 tests in the book (there are different software editions too but I have not been able to find any differences)

    7. One final issue is that with only 182 pages of instructions and gmat exercises, the book positions GMAT as an easy tests that does not require much preparation - watch out. It is not easy!

P.S. The book says there are 2 tests avaiable online but I was able to find only one; all references online were to the 2010 book, so perhaps the website has not been updated yet, but the test is not to be found.

Hope you find this review helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good
    Delivered as expected.
Most of my GMAT taking friends recommended this book, so I hope it helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Source for knowing the exact status of your preperation
Well this book has by far got the difficult most questions you'll ever come across..However dont start off your GMAT preperation with this book, otherwise you would completely feel completely de-motivated..
    All in all good questions!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I recently took the LSAT and began studying for that test using Kaplan materials but quickly noticed how absurd some of Kaplan's advice was, not to mention the fact that their made-up questions were way out in left field. Despite Kaplan's claim that they make-up these ridiculous questions in order to over-prepare the test-taker, in reality Kaplan does this because they are too cheap to pay LSAC to use actual LSAT questions and this is the best they could do.When I saw little improvement in my practice test scores I decided to invest in the Powerscore Bibles since they use actual LSAT questions and I immediately noticed a difference in my practice test scores and ultimately did well on the LSAT.

I've decided to take the GMAT so that I can pursue a dual JD/MBA and, since I didn't learn my lesson last time, I purchased Kaplan's GMAT 800.The only value I got out of this book was where Kaplan would point out the most commonly tested errors of a particular section of the test.It isn't that the questions are difficult, they aren't really, it's that they are poorly constructed and don't really resemble those written by the GMAC.

While going over GMAC's Official Guide 11, I realized that I needed help with the sentence correction questions so I bought Powerscore's Sentence Correction Bible, which was fantastic.Fortunately, I still have Powerscore's Logical Reasoning Bible so I can use that to prepare for the Critical Reasoning section and a math degree that'll come in handy with the quant section.

This test is too important to waste your time and money on Kaplan's GMAT 800.I'm obviously fond of Powerscore but unfortunately they don't offer a comprehensive study guide so it can get expensive...but you get what you pay for.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the "Holy Grail: that everyone claims it to be
Apart from the brilliant name, there is nothing else in the book that's in the top leagues.
This book has a lot of errors in the verbal section (trust me, I know what I'm talking about; I had a V51). Some of the problems in the quant section are quite challenging though.

So overall, if you do need extra practice beyond the "Official Guide". I suggest you go for the Official Guide verbal and quant books rather than this one. Kaplan 800 is a waste of money, but can be of use for quant if you get it free.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre attempt at hard questions
While a good bank of hard questions, the explanations of the book do little to help you develop the skills needed to actually get an 800. ... Read more
