5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for anyone serious about doing well on the GMAT
When I first started studying for the GMAT, I had not heard of Manhatten GMAT, though I was impressed with the positive feedback they received on Amazon.Only a few weeks into studying I now understand why they have received such positive feedback. I have tasted their Koolaid and highly recommend using their entire suite of tools for all things GMAT related...

Manhatten has come very close to perfecting the art of studying for the GMAT.Their strategy guides provide the most comprehensive, easy to understand GMAT roadmap on the market.I highly recommend purchasing the entire study guide if you are just beginning your studies, or purchase any of their 8 strategy guides if you need targeted practice in a specific area on the GMAT.

Who should use these guides:
Anyone who is serious about getting a good score on the GMAT AND has the time to invest in getting that great score.Manhatten GMAT's philosophy is to teach students to "do more with more" rather than to "do more with less".This is a great concept for anyone who has the time to invest in learning the test and for those with the desire to score well above average.

Who shouldn't buy these guides:
Those who don't have time to invest and just need a basic understanding of the test.Manhatten really caters to those who are trying to get above a 600 (if not above a 700) on the GMAT.If you are a last minute studier or don't have the desire to ace the test, then I would recommend going with either Kaplan or just the Official Guides provided by the test makers.

Bottom Line:
Manhatten GMAT provides the most comprehensive, in depth coverage of the GMAT.These books, which are accompanied by access to their online practice center (and 6 practice exams), are worth the premium compared to other study material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set of learning tools.
These books are a great way to review for the GMAT I love how they are designed to work with the Oficial Guides!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to GMAT Practice
Math Essentials is a great book to use as a gateway into rigorous studying. It includes ALL of the underlying principles needed to solve more challenging problems to come, and also serves as a great reference tool once you've completely mastered more difficult quantitative concepts. I am working toward taking the GMAT for a second time and find that Math Essentials is an easy transition into the thick of my future study sessions. I strongly recommend all course materials but I am particularly a fan of this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good consice review of math essentials
The book starts out with a diagnostic test that consists of 48 questions. It does not say to complete it in a certain amount of time, but I would recommend you allocate about 90 minutes for it. One of the biggest mistakes is solving problems without a time limit. Browsing the questions, there was a big mix (definitions, algebra, geo, graphs, etc.) The pre-test questions also appear in ascending difficulty (much like the OG). Like the OG problems/GMAT, there are answers in the problems that follow common mathematical mistakes (you can complete the work, think you have the correct answer, but a common mistake led you here and VERITAS knows it).

The subsequent sections cover the topics in the order seen in the diagnostic test. Many of the definitional issues (and shortcuts in algebra) are covered throughout the book. Each section has a post test to cover the topics covered. Draw back: explanations were not always given. The content appeared to be sufficient to figure out where the misstep/confusion resides, but that may not be true for all people. This is true across the drills and in book exercises (not consistent where explanations are given vs where explanations are not given). Explanations were given more often then not.

Strengths:
- Word translation section appears solid (as an intro. There is a later book on word problems).
- Given this is an intro book, there is a limited supply of advanced problems (later books are labeled "Advanced" or "(section name) 2")
- Lots of sidebar notes (i.e. triangles always show up). These sidebar notes supplement the section in question and provide some strategy to the topic
- Later problems in the book combine the current section with previous sections

Weaknesses:
- Sometimes steps are skipped (factoring does not show all the steps for simplification)
- Shape sections (triangle and quadrilateral section) are a bit thin as an intro
- No mention of combined shapes (a triangle or pizza slice shape embedded in a circle or semi circle)
- Could use a cheat-sheet for each reference of most common formulas/shortcuts/etc

Bottom Line: Excellent intro for the quant section. Provides a solid framework on what is needed and what areas may require additional attention.

Let me know if any questions about this book - I reply to comments

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliving High School Glory Days
The Veritas Prep books are simply amazing.I've never considered myself to be a math whiz, but the Veritas Math Essentials really helped bring back the basics. In my opinion, the Veritas Prep books are the essential tools for preparing yourself to succeed at taking the GMAT.Veritas Prep Math Essentials covered all that math I hadn't seen since high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer
If you're anything like me, your working knowledge of math is pretty limited. I was lucky enough to go to a progressive high
school where math consisted of electives, so I took 'The Art of Mathematics', where we practiced building sculptures with
parallelograms, 'College Math Basics', where we learned to figure out how much Chef Boyardee you could buy with $9 in
cafeteria credit, and 'The History of Math', which taught us how to convincingly plagiarize from a bunch of mathematicians'
biographies on Wikipedia. While this was admirable preparation for the math challenges I face in day-to-day life, it didn't really
equip me to calculate the volume of a spheroid or determine whether x^2 - y^2 is odd if x is root 676 and y is a prime factor of 123.

They say in AA -- also offered at my progressive high school -- that the first step is admitting you need help, a step I reached after
about five seconds of math review in the official guide to the GMAT. Before I started with Veritas, I had picked up a couple of other
foundational math books, but all of them seemed to make the strange assumption that I was simultaneously brilliant and retarded,
giving advice like this: "Remember that word problems are easier if translated to algebra. If, for example, a question states that Paul
has two electrical resistors x and y, where the resistance of x is inversely proportional to the current k and the resistance of y is
directly proportional to the cube root of 8k, simply begin by writing this statement as an algebraic equation." Of course! What on
earth was I thinking?

Advice like that was useless for me: it felt like those books were basically telling Rain Man to remember to wear pants before going on stage to accept his Nobel Prize. The rest of us aren't quite eligible for that prize yet, so we need to learn some math, and a book like Veritas's Math Essentials is one of the best ways to do it. The book is designed as a primer for the classes they offer, and before the first class somebody at Veritas gets in touch with you and advises you to review the entire Math Essentials book on your own before being plunged into the advanced concepts that emerge in the course itself. As such, this book is designed for self-study and should be perfect for those of you studying on your own without the benefit of the class. It starts with the basics, drills you on all sorts of fundamental subjects -- exponents, square roots, decimals, conversion, basic operations, word translations, etc. -- and it does so in a relatively friendly environment. One of the most obnoxious things about the GMAT is the way its equations exploit loopholes, exceptions, and little details, to the point where even people with a good math background can be driven to despair. This book helps you learn all the concepts BEFORE they get twisted, a crucial strategy. It's pure hell to try to learn GMAT trickery at the same time as GMAT math: you simply have to grasp the latter first.

All in all, this was probably the best of their math books for me, in that it convinced me I could actually learn this test. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Essentials
The Math Essentials book is a great review of all of the math skills that you once knew but haven't used in a while.Going through the exercises is very helpful in getting your mind used to mental math again, and the explanations help to show you the bad habits and mistakes you've picked up over the years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Review, but a Few Obvious Errors
After reviewing this book for a few days, I feel that I am receiving a great "crash course" for the GMAT.The book is also small and easy to carry anywhere.

But I agree with a previous reviewer that there are a few obvious mistakes in the Math Sections:

1) As stated by another reviewer, the Permutations formula is wrong (corrects itself in the example.)

2) Again as stated by the same reviewer, 100 fish are mentioned in the solution but not the problem.

3) I also found an example regarding addition of square roots to be incorrect.

I believe most people will really benefit from this book, but again watch out for errors; they should be obvious if you think it out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good value for the money, if you are serious about the GMAT
The book accomplishes what it sets itself forth to. It is a great panic management tool as it helps you understand the logic behind the test. It is also extremely valuable when it comes to the proposed elimination process.
I used this book to study for about 2 weeks after 9 years out of college and scored 700 points using some of the techniques they suggest. One have to consider that I have a strong statistical basis due to my work experience, so the mistakes the book contains in the math section were no concern to me.
Not wanting to sound cocky, I have to confess my belief that if you do not catch those errors on your own, there is no book on earth that will help you score well in the GMAT within a week. If you need more than an orientation on how to get through the test, you need more time and other books. The simulated test available for free at gmat.com is a good basis to determine what is it that you need.

In two sentences: great book if you have some statistical and analytical background, but little time to study. If you need to develop some disciplines, you need more time, and there is no book that can help you in less than a week.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, many errors, questions are too easy
I purchased this book because I found myself having to take the GMAT with only about two weeks to prepare.Reading the book gives you a false sense of confidence as the questions on the GMAT are much more difficult than the examples. In addition, there were many errors in the book with formulas and answers which makes it difficult to study if you are starting from square one.

It is a good book to get your feet wet if you have not studied GMAT material in a while but follow it up with the Official GMAT guide. The book also had some good ideas (like the process of elimination method).

Worth the cheap price, but don't expect much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good tips, but too many errors!
This book is a good crash course with a lot of helpful tips and rules to remember, BUT when it comes to examples or practice test, author makes a lot of mistakes. What's more, author does not explain well why this answers better over others. And most of the time, when she tries to explain, she basically says "it's right - just because it is right!" Does it make sense? No? Well, get used to this kind of explanations because this is author's tactic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the GAMT
After many years in the workforce, I decided to pursue a graduate degree. The most significant hurdle was the GMAT.Writing and language are strengths for me, but for the past 18 years, I've let computers take care of quantitative issues. So, in short order I had to become reacquainted with math concepts long forgotten, and learn how to take a CAT exam and score reasonably well. All of my research led me to one conclusion:it takes more than one study guide to adequately prepare for the GMAT.The course I followed, with an evaluation of each guide, is outlined in the following paragraphs.

For my math review, I selected Peterson's Math Review for GRE, GMAT, and MCAT, 2nd edition. There have been some comments about errors in previous editions, but I found this guide quite helpful, and an excellent refresher on math topics I have not seen in years, but need to know for the GMAT.4 out of 5.

The GMAT Advantage with Professor Dave was selected because of its readability and the questions. The material is challenging, and the more difficult questions in each category provide a good idea of the difficult questions faced on the GMAT.The verbal chapters are very strong and have excellent examples. The math problems are also very good, but the text assumes that the reader already is familiar with most math topics. This is why I recommend Peterson's MAth Review to compliment this guide.Overall 4 out of 5, with a solid 5 for the verbal sections.

The Official Guide for GMAT is the best resource for practice questions.1400 questions are in this guide, and the last 1/3 in each section represent some difficult concepts that will be tested. This book gets the reader prepared for the real questions that will be seen on the exam.In addition, the question writers provide excellent explanations for the solutions, and reveal some elegantly simple ways to solve math problems that at first appear to be very labor intensive.4 out of 5.(Also, be sure to take the 2 free CAT tests available online from GMAC.These prepare the user well for the GMAT experience.)

Finally, I also used the Princeton Review Crash Course for GMAT.I used this as a final review and to gain some additional pointers and time savers. While brief, this book does provide excellent quick reference tips for all question types that will be seen on the test. The idiom list and formulas are worth the price alone.4 out of 5.

I prepared over an 8 week period, with at least 1 hour of review per day, and moreoften it was 2 to 4 hours.Regular, consistent preparation, using different references that fit your style of learning will prepare you for this rigorous test.Prepare thoroughly with relentless repetition, and take the test. After 18 years out of school, I scored a 690.

Good luck. ... Read more

Product Description
CHILI HOT GMAT: MATH REVIEW will help readers develop the skills and mindset needed to score high on the quantitative section of the GMAT exam. What is this book¹s secret recipe? Each hand-selected problem comes with a Classification, Snapshot, and Chili Rating. Classification serves to identify each problem according to category or sub-category. Snapshot highlights why that particular problem was chosen, including the underlying problem-solving principle or strategic approach. Chili Rating helps candidates gauge the estimated difficulty level of a given problem. A single chili indicates that the estimated difficulty level of a given problem is "mild" (500 to 590 difficulty level), two chilies spell "hot" (600 to 690 difficulty level), and three chilies signal "very hot" (700 or above difficulty level). By studying problems of varying difficulty, candidates will learn to maintain discipline on easy but tricky questions and also to exercise flexibility when deciding on multiple approaches and time-saving shortcuts for use in tackling harder, more involved problems. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point if you're lost in the woods but misses probability and stats
When I took my first GMAT practice test, I stopped a quarter of the way into the math because I realized how BAD I was! I figured it was hopeless continuing because it was just pure frustration.

This book is good if you're really at the head scratching level (like I was), but it doesn't cover everything you need to know for the exam (it totally ignores probability and statistics for example - which is very important to know for the exam). The big plus with this book is that they give you basic 101 practice problems just to test your knowledge of a concept that was just explained. GMAT books like Barrons illustrate a concept, give you 1 easy and 1 difficult problem, show you how to solve, then you're on your own until the practice exams. The approach here is much more like a genuine math textbook.

Use this as a supplement and source of practice, but definitely get more than this. I did like Barrons math review overall, that was a help. Princeton's was really a joke, more like "here's some basic stuff, and then just guess the rest".

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't use this book!
I got this book from my local library (thank goodness I didn't spend money on it), because I took a practice GMAT test and scored lower than I had hoped I would on the math section.I worked through this whole book before taking a second practice test, and my composite score only increased by 10 points. This book is filled with errors, typos, and flat-out inaccurate information about math.As an example, on page 166 under "Roots Revisited" the book incorrectly (or, rather, incompletely) tells you how to solve roots:It completely ignores the option of a negative answer for an even root.(For example, the answer to the square root of 4 could be either 2 or -2, but the book only considers the positive answer 2.)I missed two questions on my second practice test because I incorrectly assumed that because this book did not address negative answers to square (and other even) roots, the GMAT would also not consider those negative answers. That was an incorrect assumption.I'm just glad I only used this book to prepare for a practice test, and was not trying to improve my score on an actual GMAT exam that I'd paid $250 to take.I don't want other people to depend on this book for GMAT math preparation because they are likely to be disappointed with the results.Don't make the same mistake(s) I did!Don't use this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EZ GMAT logic stats
Some of the complex problems require logical reasoning as apposed to solving straight math and the math involved is not that hard but interpreting the logic into mathematical terms can be a problematic job because most of these problems are pretty abstract and often difficult to crack. The EZ GMAT logic and stats would be an excellent choice if you are struggling with logical reasoning.

5-0 out of 5 stars With this book logic will seem logical
The EZ logic and stats book was of a great help with some of the trickiest math problems. This book is entirely based on solving different kinds of logic and statistics topics. I have some of the other books in the EZ series but this is the only book which is written purely for logic based questions. If you are having difficulties with logic problems, you may wish to consider getting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I purchased this book along with the EZ Solutions' "Word Problem" book. The book is easy to follow and has lots of examples. I shows different methods of solving the same problem. The book is paperback and easy to carry around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Honest Review of Logic and Stats
I have yet to find a better book on Logic and Statistics.Believe me; I own GMAT books from several other companies. From the first page of the EZ Solutions Logic and Stats book, you will be guided through examples of how to solve the type of Logic and Statistics questions that will appear on the GMATPrep and Princeton Review's Practice GMAT Exams.

In my opinion, this book is perfect for anyone who wants to become knowledgeable in the areas of Logic and Statistics. Furthermore, this book assumes you have no knowledge of Logic and Statistics.Prior to this summer, I had not taken a Statistics course in 10 years.

During my undergraduate years, I was a Psychology and Classical Civilization major.Unfortunately, I was not a great student of Statistics. At times, I struggled with Probability, Venn Diagrams, and Permutation.Fortunately, I was strong enough in other areas of Statistics to pass three Statistics courses during my undergraduate studies. In my junior year, I decided to take Deductive Logic; unfortunately, I learned quickly that I did not have adequate Logic skills to pass the course, so I retook the course at another university that summer.

While I have not taken the GMAT, my opinion still has merit. This past summer, I ordered the Logic and Stats book before taking a non-graduate Business Statistics course through a top-tier business school.Without this book, I doubt I would have done as well in the Business Statistics course. Finally, I understand Probability, Venn Diagrams, and Permutation.I owe it all to EZ Solutions! If EZ Solutions had made its series of book while I was in college, I would have been a Math major.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practice for GMAT
The topics in this book are well organized and the content is easy to understand. I found the book to be especially comprehensive in its coverage of each topic. It is a very helpful book if you have been out of touch with math for some time. This book will definitely help to refresh the math skills you learned before, and the explanations/solutions to each math problem is very clear.

On comparison with other practice books, I found this book to be much better. If you are sincere about doing well on the GMAT, and diligent enough to work through each math problem, then this is the book to get. Upon completion of the problems in this book, you will feel well prepared and more confident about handling the questions on the GMAT. I would highly recommend getting this book if you want to get a higher score. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You won't get close to 700 with this but can be useful for a brief review
This book has the most potential if you are very short on time (2-3 weeks) or if you are re-taking GMAT and put most emphasis on one section but still want to refresh the other one with minimal time investment. I would not recommend this book to GMAT novices who have a few months and can actually take advantage of more serious materials.

As with any Cliff's product, you are getting a very condensed and stripped down version of a prep book, about 150 pages of material and 65 pages of tests (compare that to the 650 page behemoth from Kaplan or Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides. The absolute strength is that you cut out a lot of fluff and it is down to the point. The weakness is that there are no second chances and very minimal time is spent on each topic.

* I felt the RC section was actually useful
* In general it is helpful to have a full section overview on just one page vs 15 (good after you have been exposed to lengthy strategy descriptions, not before)
* CR and SC struggle as you need a lot more space to cover them well
* Quant depends on your level - was good for a quick review and even had a tiny section on Probability
* There are 2 tests in the book (Diagnostic test upfront and another at the back)
* I am reviewing the early release of the book (you will notice that book availability is not until 1/7/2010) and the online supplement is not yet available. it's expected to have vocabulary and sentence correction quizzes. Don't get carried away with vocabulary - GMAC actually ran some research and there is no correlation between vocabulary practice and GMAT score - keep that in mind
* The book does mention the free practice tests available from GMAC (GMATPrep) but fails to mention Official Guide, which I think is a disservice to those not familiar with the GMAT
* Plenty of practice questions for this size of a book, so a great resource for retakers or to run through questions.

Hope my review helps with your buying decision. Please reply to this review if you have any specific questions - I respond FAST.
Good luck on the GMAT and with your MBA pursuit

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ GMAT word problem
Some of the intricate problems need word translation instead of merely solving straight math and the math involved is not that tough but converting the words into mathematical expression can be a challenging task because most of these problems are quite verbose and mostly difficult to break. The EZ GMAT word problem is a great tool for anyone who is seeking assistance with word problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars With this book word problems with no longer be a problem
The EZ word problems book was a life saver when it comes to converting words into a math problem. This book is exclusively dedicated to solving different kinds of word problems broken down into different categories. I have some of the other books in EZ series which also has word problems, but going through this book first made it easier for me to understand them. If you are stuck on word problem, definitely get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The book is very easy to follow and explains the problems very clearly. It has some really good helpful tips and concrete examples. I also liked the fact that it is paperback and is easy to carry around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Smart GMAT Study Guide!
Before I bought this book, I could barely solve a simple word problem. Now I have confidence to tackle complex age, weight, and mixture problems.Where was this book when I was in grade school? I would have been a math whiz! This book needs to be owned by anyone who wants to improve his or her quantitative skills, not just an individual studying for the GMAT. In addition, this book breaks down each word problem in its simplest form.Sometimes the author gives you more than one option for solving the math word problem. Even if you have been out of college for 10 years, you can relearn word problems in one night because of this book.

I will be taking the GMAT in a few months. This book is the main reason that my GMAT practice scores have improved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is an excellent prep book for the GMAT because the topics are well organized, with very comprehensive coverage. The solution to each problem is clearly explained. If you have been out of touch with math for some time, this is the book to get.The book will help refresh your memory and develop your math skills.

I bought the entire EZ Solutions math series for GMAT and it was well worth it! If you are sincere about getting a good score on the GMAT, and are diligent to work through the problems in the books, you will definitely be well prepared and feel more confident about taking the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ books
In order to get a real GMAT prep - I would recommend you use the EZ Solutions series of 10 books, or whichever book(s) you think you need most help with. These books are very detailed oriented and cover everything on the GMAT math. First use the review modules to get the concepts and then use the workbooks for practice. Some of the most challenging math topics, such as basic arithmetic and number properties, algebraic concepts, complex word problems, logical reasoning problems, etc., are brilliantly explained in these books. Just because of the high price of the book, you can skip the math strategies book. However, the EZ basic workbook is a good refresher to get started and advanced workbook is a "must have" if you are aiming for a high score.

After doing all this, use the OG and you will see a dramatic difference in your scores. You don't even have to take any of those pricy courses. I followed this process and my scores have jumped from the 500-range to the 700-range. Good luck in your prep.

Product Description
Few prospects are as frightening to business school candidates as taking the GMAT. Ironically, most preparation guides only cover half of what students need to know to earn a top score on the exam. To ace the GMAT, students must master far more than the requisite concepts in math, grammar and writing; they must learn the tricks of the test writers, who tend to ask the same types of questions, with the same types of traps and pitfalls, on every exam. This publication addresses the second half of the equation, by "teaching the test" in an efficient and practical manner. It presents targeted strategies for each section of the GMAT, along with dozens of relevant examples. Readers will learn the sneaky ways that test writers try to confuse students and distract them from the correct answer choices. They will learn practical (and manageable) ways to dismantle arguments and solve tough reasoning and math problems. Most importantly, they will learn how to exploit the predictability of the GMAT, which makes it a surprisingly learnable test. For many students, the GMAT is the greatest obstacle they will face in the MBA admissions process. With so much at stake, they must work smarter (rather than harder), to earn a top score. This savvy publication shows them how. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for GMAT
I started my GMAT course and have looked over many books relating to Arithmetic and this book is by far the best book that I have read. The solutions and problems are well laid out. It's both an excellent book for a beginner and the intermediate of us. The collection of books is well worth the money when studying the GMAT.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rather poor arithmetic review
I did not find this EZ Solutions Arithmetic review very helpful. The main reason is, that it is not very textbook/explanatory-like, but instead lists one definition after the other; this is not what I expect from a good math book (I found the math review in the barron's GMAT book a lot better). Also the first 14 pages are just "we bring you the breakthrough etc."-bla bla.
But, after all, the book does give you some arithmetic review, so its not a total waste.

This essential preparation tool takes the surprise out of the scratch paper and marker that you will be given when you take the GMAT at a real testing center. Use it to hone your time management and notation to help you achieve the highest possible score.

The Test Simulation Booklet consists of 5 laminated double-sided pages, and is virtually identical to the booklet used for the real GMAT. A non-permanent marker of the same type used for the GMAT is included with your purchase. You may erase and re-use the booklet by using a moist paper towel or napkin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST have this item.
If you are studying for the GMAT, you have no choice. You MUST have this item.Taking such a high stress test means that if you can eliminate any variables, then you will be in a better position.Having this sheet and taking some practice exams with it will better prepare you for the real thing.FYI -- the Pen died on me after I used it a lot.So, if you are studying and practicing a lot -- you will need more than one pen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the exam
This notepad is just like the exam.Great for practicing with a non-permanent marker.

5-0 out of 5 stars You should get the booklet & marker
This booklet is not a must have - people have scored 700+ without it, BUT, consider these arguments:
1. This booklet and pen are exact replicas of what is used at the test center, and the more you can be comfortable with that environment, the better. (This set comes with one pen, but you will actually get 2 at your test center)
2. You are probably not used to writing notes and solving questions on a spiral-bound dry-erase board with a dry-erase marker pen. Having used this pen and board for a test can help you avoid some discomforts and set expectations properly
3. The size of this board (see customer images for comparison) is huge - much larger than expected (larger than OG 12) - it will take a good portion of your desk space, so again, something else good to know

!!!IMPORTANT!!!
Regardless of whether you buy this set of not, remember 2 things:
1. Test the pens at the test center - many report that they get dry pens that do not write, and then end up exchanging them mid-test while the clock is ticking
2. Close the cap of the pen if you don't plan to write for a little while

Let me know if any questions - I reply to comments!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stimulation Booklet & Missing Marker
I received the Test Stimulation Booklet with out the Marker.Though i paid for both.
The customer service guy responded by offering a refund of $3 for the Marker.I feel disappointed.
But the Test Stimulation Booklet arrived in good condition and looks great. On the whole felt Amazon let me down.

In the 3rd week of May,2010 Amazon refunded $5 for the Marker. Now i am satisfied with Amazon's service.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Math Strategies Alternate Methods is a great prep aid.Its the belt and suspenders approach to Math Strategies.Armed with these alternate strategies you double your arsenal to successfully take on the quantitative portion of the exam.In combination with all the other EZ Solutions books you have a comprehensive study regimen that is organized well and communicated in a clear and expert manner.I recommend the entire GMAT series.I have tried other providers and I'm sticking with EZ Solutions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Content; Poorly Written
I bought two of these books in the GMAT series; Math Practice Advanced Workbook and Math Test Taking Strategies. The content was excellent; I also used the Kaplan book and the official one from the GMAC. EZ Solutions covered much of the same strategies as Kaplan, but I found the practice exercises more helpful in getting me to remember and apply the strategies. I attribute EZ Solutions for most of the gain from my first practice score of 690 to my actual test score of 750.

The series is very repetitive, which can be good for reinforcing the techniques. However, some practice questions are too similar to be helpful. For instance, one problem may be identical to the proceeding one except all the numbers are different by a factor of 2. That indicates to me a little laziness on behalf of the author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
This book" ez math strategies" was a huge disappointment. Based upon the reviews I thought this would be the GMAT MATH book I have been looking for. NOPE. If you have worked through "crackin the gmat" the information in this book will be a review. At least in "Crackin" additional subject matters are covered so you get more for your money. I do like the way this book is written and I may explore one of the module specific books such as "Geometry." I can tell based on this book that the subject specific will most likely be very detailed and informative. This authors "strategies" however are nothing new and as I stated can be found in the above mentioned books as well as "Gmat for dummies." The only book that was lacking in Math Strategy was Kaplan. Therefore if you just worked through GmatKaplan and the Official guides then this material would be "new." Again I will try a subject specific in hopes of finding help in math. Save your money avoid "strategies"

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but understand its purpose
I have just finished reading EZ GMAT-Math Strategies and I find it excellent for the techniques that it suggests to solve GMAT Math, and the explanations are extensive and clear. In fact, the book is repetitive in many ways; while I would usually find that annoying, here I believe it is a strength because the concepts being taught need to be reinforced. The presentation is very logical and I found none of the techniques provided to be difficult to implement.

I consider myself to be fairly strong at algebra and geometry, so I was happy to see that the author has provided two methods to solve the vast majority of problems given: the "EZ" alternate strategy (which will be the technique suggested in the chapter), and the "EZ" direct method (usually involving algebra or in some cases mathematical intuition). Sometimes I found myself bypassing the highlighted strategy because I could solve the problem quicker or more comfortably with algebra; other times the strategy proved essential. The emphasis is on finding the best method FOR YOU (efficiency and accuracy!).

I agree with other reviewers: the final part of the book (Data Sufficiency), is brilliantly done. For this section alone the book is worth its purchase price. Finally, a book that explains whether or not you should simplify the question stem if possible (yes), flowcharts to reason through these types of questions, and how to deal with all sorts of DS formats (yes/no, value, conditional questions, etc.). When you finish this section, you will understand how to do the problems. I have come to agree with the author: in many cases DS questions are easier than regular problem solving!

This book is NOT intended for extensive problem-solving practice. The problems are simple, but well-chosen, because they reinforce points of emphasis. They are clearly not representative of what will be on the GMAT.

There are some typos in this book and every now and again you will run into a question that is poorly written and confusing to answer. However, this book is not intended for extensive problem-solving, and the errors in text never detracted from the points the author was trying to convey.

Definitely Recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised
Albeit the book contains several nice techniques for preparing for the quantitative section of the GMAT, you are required to purchase the other books to obtain a complete preparatory library and see the entire picture.

Also it looks like the publisher laid out the entire book using microsoft works; not easy to find where you left off if you close the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for an intro book but not enough to get to 700
I felt it was an OK starter book that explained how the GMAT works and logic behind the test, etc but after that it started to fall apart. In particular, I had a few issues with the strategies and expectations this book set - it gave an impression that GMAT was pretty easy and it was a guessing game rather than a test of skill and knowledge (it is definitely not a game).

NEGATIVES:
- Approaches GMAT from high level strategies such as POE, getting into the mind of test writer, backsolving, and others, which are all great strategies but they really belong at the very end of the book, not upfront. Basics such as blocking and tackling need to go first; otherwise it works in a controled practice environment but fails on the test
- Lack of basics coverage for Verbal (very little review of questions, grammar)
- Reading Comprehension strategy needs to be reconsidered. Every other provider such as Kaplan, Manhattan GMAT, Manhattan Review, PowerScore, Veritas, and others suggest to read the passage in its entirety. Which I strongly agree with. Princeton continues to insist on briefly reading the passage and then jumping into the question - the result is the same as above - jumping into hot water unprepared and fumbling through questions. By changing my reading strategy I was able to go from 30% success rate to about 60-70. Literally within 2 days.
- Weak AWA section (thoug this is not anything you should spend more than a day on)
- A few typos carried over from the 2010 edition
- The online interface for tests does not resemble the actual GMAT

POSITIVES:
- Has a pretty good math review section covering even topics such as Statistics and Probability
- 2 GMAT tests are included (online) - there is a code at the back of the book to be redeemed online
- Practice questions in the book are structured by difficulty (convenient)
- You a

Bottom Line: I felt this book emphasized tricks and tips more than a solid knowledge of Math, Grammar, and Logic, which is Ok if you are looking for a 600 but not enough to get past that.

P.S. This book officially comes with 2 online tests (though for some reason I got access to all 4). The same book with DVD, provides access to 4 online tests. The actual DVD does not have much besides a few practice questions in video format. All of the tests are online. The trade off for $10 is the 2 extra tests.

SOME OTHER THOUGHTS:
* How do I get 700 then?
There are several options:
1. Review each section separately using other books such as the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook and Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook
2. Thorough/Methodical review of each area - If you have a bit more time, grab the collection of 8 Manhattan Guides. These books are excellent and are actually used in the classroom setting for their classes, so you are defintely get the top books. If you dont need/want the entire collection, see my review for what stand-alone books to get. This plan is likely to get you a higher score with this section but it will also take up more time (about a month more). Decide on the approach based on your starting position, target score, time you have, and willingness to study math and grammar for months without a break.

* Any other books I need to know about?
YES. There is one - The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition. This book is published by the creators of GMAT and contains real GMAT questions. You should also download the Official GMAT Prep software from GMAC's website [...] - they offer 2 tests for free. These are great to get a feel for the official GMAT interface, official questions, and also the official score (make sure you don't click past that at the end; if you do, you can't recover it and it will remain a mystery). I would suggest taking one at the very beginning of your prep. Many feel that it's a waste of one practice test but in reality it is not. You can take these multiple times and after a few months, your level will be much higher than when you started (hopefully), and the questions you will encounter on the re-take will be froma differen difficulty level, thus not overlaping and thus not wasting anything :)

* What if I have trouble getting through this book? Where can I find help?
There are several books that can help you get up to speed with quant and grammar:
1. For Quantitative section: Foundations of GMAT Math by Manhattan GMAT
2. For Verbal Section: Kaplan GMAT Verbal Foundations (grammar only)

Let me know if you have any questions about the book - I reply to comments!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan GMAT prep book
Great deal. The book came not too long after I ordered it and was in good condition. Thanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the CD-ROM
The product is GMAT with CD-ROM: fifth edition(kaplan), but there is no CD-ROM in it. If they know there is no CD with the book they need to inform the buyer, or else the shipmnet must include book and CD. shipment took more than two weeks to arrive which is OK because the expected delivery time was in between two weeks. Please inform the buyer if the product is with out some parts which might be important to decide weather to buy or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars You prepare for GMAT? You read KAPLAN!
I have just finished reading the KAPLAN GMAT prep book. Previously I have read a few books on this topic already including princeton review. The value of this book in comparison to other GMAT test prep books is numerous times greater. Sections are explained in order of appearance during the real test and each section is followed by a set of exam questions on the relevant topic. Each section of exam questions is followed by the test result explanation. I prefer this approach over princeton approach and I can warmly recommend this book to any perspective GMAT applicant.

5-0 out of 5 stars a time-effective way to prepare for the GMAT
this study guide is well written and includes all the necessary math and English review notes needed to "study" for the GMAT. The notes are helpful and worth the read before tackling the practice questions.

If you have time to spare, I would recommend using this book in combination with the GMAT official guide published by ETS (it comes with 1400 practice questions).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I used thi book to prepre my GMAT and I scored 760.
There are few tests on the book in itself but the software on the CD rom is very useful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this AWFUL book and CD!
I'm not usually one to complain, but this book and the CD that came with it were absolutely terrible. The book itself was okay in some ways, good layout etc., despite some errors like those beneath said. But add to that the fact that it gives you NO INDICATION of how you are going to do on the GMAT whatsoever- it doesn't even take a stab at giving you any scores. Or tell you the difficulty ratings, or anything useful. I really regret not looking ahead of time to see which books were the best; I chose this one for the CD-rom, maybe naively expecting it to give you an authentic experience and an expected score, both of which it entirely failed to do.

They don't even mention that the answer choices have no letter on the test, so they train you to go by A, B, C, D, E... and it's totally different. There were also several mistakes in the scoring. The CD had marked several correct answers wrong, with the explanation saying the one they'd marked wrong was right, it was almost insulting. It was a trainwreck...

Avoid this book at all costs! I won't bore you with the specifics of how terrible this book was. Just don't buy it... And to add insult to injury, when I wrote to them complaining about it, they didn't even attempt a decent apology. Boo. You ought to be ashamed McGraw Hill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please read this before you make thesame mistake I did!
I made the unfortunate mistake of buying this before reading reviews. After taking two of the practice tests I was feeling a little bit too good about this test. But something didn't seem right as 3 or 4 of the questions on the math section were just plain wrong. Typos in 1/3 when you mean 1/5 and then telling you you answered incorrectly is very frustrating. I started looking into the reviews by other people from previous years editions and the one review before me and realized that this was a trend.

It is laid out very well, and can be a fairly quick study guide, but I wouldn't call it comprehensive, good, or as they say aimed for the upper portion of students aiming at getting the highest scores. This really started scaring me. I talked to a friend who took the test two years ago and he said that there is no way this should seam easy. He is giving me his Kaplan 08 complete study book. I am going to go through that in the 12 days I have left to study. I will comment after I take the test and be frank with my score and which one was closer at simulating the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Study Guide
I am sure that if I had continued to use this study guide I would have done pretty poorly on the GMAT.First of all, the book gives the impression that the GMAT is pretty easy, which it isn't.Second, I found a pretty bad algebra error (not just a typo) and emailed McGraw-Hill about it but didn't get much of a response.Luckily Borders allowed me to exchange the book and I purchased the Kaplan GMAT book instead. Much better!DO NO PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Immensely helpful
I was looking to improve my reading comprehension skills and this book helped a lot.
All the practice passages have detailed explanation about both right and wrong answers - which is very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull - buy it
This is a very helpful book on Reading Section. One of the very few available ones on the market. I don't understand why there are so many books conserning LR and AR, and almost none conserning the reading. Reading was my most difficult section (as it is for many students- passages are long time is not enough, same problem..) and if there was more on the market about it I would have purchased it. Anyhow, this book is well written, explanatory, enough exercises.
The reason why I rate it with 4, not 5 stars is because it is not LSAT specific, but it also tells about MCAT, GMAT, etc. Which is important when it comes to the length of passages in the excercise section which takes up 130 out of 180 pages from the book. There are passages of different lengths from 30 to 80 lines, covering the formats of the passages given on GMAT, MCAT, etc. But what we need for LSAT - are passages of 55 - 60 lines so we can properly time ourselves and as we all know on the LSAT - TIME IS EVERYTHING.
In conclusion: helpful book - get it.
P.S. If the publishers get to see that - consider improving it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I was preparing for GMAT and was very in Reading Comprehension. This book was helful to me especially the LSAT passages which were difficult compared to GMAT passages. explanations were good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Time-wasting if not skill-diminishing
I've read this book for LSAT prep. While the selection of passages is excellent, crafting of questions is simply a bad joke.To be precise, it is mostly the answer choices that makes this book time-wasting, if not skill-diminishing.The answer choices in this book are just not the kind of choices that appear in an actual test.Especially annoying is that many "right" answer choices can be right only after a very very long stretch of logic, which NEVER happens in a real test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool
This book helps the reader learn the correct way to annotate and outline the paragraphs on the reading comprehension section of the GRE*MCAT*LSAT*GMAT.It was very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best
This prep book has just the right amount of information in an easy to digest format. The explanations are short, down to earth and straight to the point, the advice is great. The shortcuts shown will save lots of sweat during the exam. Even the sense of humor is there so it's actually enjoyable. I have studied for a few weeks already and, although I do use other books, this one is my ultimate go to. Along with Princeton's Word Smart which I also highly reccomend. Good luck with your studies!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Effort on Cracking the GMAT by Princeton Review
This book helped me a lot in my preparation for the GMAT. It gives really good examples of using things like process of elimination, pacing during the test, and GMAT tendencies to help improve your score. This book covers each section of the GMAT in great detail and has a good number of practice questions of varying difficulty. The online practice tests are useful but the scoring seems to be a little off (I scored 30 to 50 points higher on the Offical GMAT practice tests and on the actual test). I would buy this book as the "how to take the GMAT" guide and the Official Guide for GMAT Review for actual tests questions from past versions of the GMAT. As mentioned in another review the DVD is pretty worthless. If you want to watch it I would suggest watching it first just to get an overview of the test and then delve into the book. Here are some of my tips for the GMAT: 1) Find out if the school of your choice uses the scores for the writing assessment. The one I hope to attend does not which allowed me more time to prepare for the other sections and cut my test time by an hour. 2) Finish the test... from the practice tests I learned that not finishing will cost you big time. Even if you have to guess on some questions you will come out better by finishing the test compared to getting a few more problems right but not finishing. 3) Take your practice test at a location away from home (library, coffee shop, etc.)... this will get you prepared for taking the test in a different environment. 4) Time yourself on practice questions to get a feel for how long you can spend on a problem. Cracking the GMAT has a good section on pacing which will give you a game plan going into the test. Good Luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars THE RIGHT STEP TO START
This book guide you from point A to point B, but not for all. It is the right step to prepare yourself. There are so many of the same, but be careful to pick the one best for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars I passed using this
I had only a few months to study and not every day and I only used this book (and the free practice test that the Gmac mails out) and I got a 500 on the test. It was harder than the SAT but the advice on the video w/ the book and the practice tests ( I recommend that one focus on the tests above all) and you can do well. I did not study as much as I could have

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
I found the questions to be a bit rudimentary. The classes might help. but you're probably better off with Kaplan, etc. classes and mentoring. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
The Official Guide for GMAT Review is the only studyguide on the market with real--though retired--questions from oldGMATs. Published by the Educational Testing Service and the GraduateManagement Admission Council (the organizations that administer theGMAT), this book is an excellent guide to the kinds of questionslikely to appear on your exam--because they've appeared on examsalready.

The book begins with an overview of the exam itself, briefdescriptions of the different types of questions, and a list of skillsthat each question type is designed to measure. A very thorough reviewof the math skills you'll need for the exam is followed by chapters onproblem solving and data sufficiency, as well as individual chapterson the three types of verbal questions. Each of these chaptersincludes strategies for doing well on the exam, hundreds of samplequestions, and explanatory material for all the questions. The chapteron the analytical-writing-assessment (a.k.a. "essay") portion of theexam includes all 180 possible questions as well as guides to thestandards used in judging your responses.

This book is not intended to provide "shortcuts" or "tricks to foolthe ETS"--many others on the market can do that for you. It does, however, provide hundreds of actual GMAT questions. As a result,The Official Guide for GMAT Review is an excellentsupplementary tool if you're serious about preparing for this majorexam.--C.B. Delaney ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GMAT review
I haven't had a chance to dive into it yet, but so far, it seems informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget others
In my opinion this book will be the only one to worth its price. This book is "must" for every exam takers. It reflects all the material that you are responsible for. For that reason forget about all the other books such as Kaplan, Barrons, Princeton etc. These books are a piece of ... and you don't have to use them. Because you shouldthink that ETS is aware of these books' strategies and questions. In sum, there is no alternative for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The most important book to buy, but still *NOT* enough!
In a word, this is a great book!

We use this book as the basis for our GMAT preparation--we require all of our students to do all of the exercises in this book before they take the test.

This book has LOTS of practiceauthentic practice questions. There is no substitute for official GMATquestions--the questions in the practice books are just not the same. Manyof the practice books have mistakes and address topics that are not reallyrelated to what you will see on the GMAT. It is very easy to doubt thesequestions and to find fault with them. However, official GMAT questions arenot like that--you will almost never be able to find fault withthem.

However, this book has MANY problems--it is not a perfect solutionfor GMAT preparation. Some of the questions are too easy, especially themath questions--many of our students have said that the questions on thereal test are much harder than the ones in the book. Many TestMagicstudents can get over 90%ile on the math section and they think the math inthis book is too easy.

Moreover, the explanations are hard tounderstand--they are written for college professors! It doesn't makesense--obviously, if the questions were difficult for you, you needexplanations that are easy to understand. These explanations are written inthe same style as the reading passages--not very helpful for manypeople!

In fact, many of our students quickly finish this book and needmore. Unfortunately, there are no other good materials available. This bookis not enough.

Finally, some of the reading passages are shorter than theones on the real test. We actually called ETS to complain about this and wewere told, and this is a quote, "Well, we were just trying to givepeople an idea of what the test was like." In other words, the readingwill be about as hard as the hardest passages in this book--prepareyourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars The first book you should buy, but it's not enough!!
I run a course preparing people to take the GMAT and this book is*required* material.

There is absolutely *no* substitute for officialGMAT questions, and this book has them. You will get a pretty good samplingof the kinds of questions that ETS has prepared for you to take theGMAT.

The big problem, however, is that this book is now getting old andETS spends a lot of money updating their tests almost every day. In otherwords, this text is becoming outdated.

I talked to a higher-up at ETS andcomplained to him that the real GMAT reading passages were longer than theones in this book. What did he say? He said, "Well, we just wanted togive people an *idea* of what would be on the test."

In other words,if you feel confident after acing this book, be careful--you might getsomething harder!

Unfortunately, there is *no* harder material availableon the market right now. We should all pressure ETS to release moreofficial questions so we can be better prepared for the GMAT.

Good luckon your test!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're serious- buy this book!
While the book is no help in brushing up on math, and the questions on the archaic floppies are the same as those in the book, if you want a better score, get this. While Princeton Review and Kaplan are great forre-learning your math, they can only approximate the questions on the GMAT,and they can be confusing.

This course is excellent because it ggives youreal questions. This prepares you mentally for the GMAT, and is anexcellent tool for your last week of studying. Also, becuase the format isthe same as the real GMAT, you won't stress about anything on testday.

Some warnings: do the test on the disks (it's the same as the book, and gives you valuable practice on taking the computer test); don't try tolearn the math from the meager review; and do one essay question (thesoftware is so primitive, you have to get used to it!).

Also, this courseaccurately predicts your GMAT score (it hit mine on the nose). ... Read more
