5-0 out of 5 stars Fast shipping!
The book arrived in perfect condition, and is exactly as described (if not in better shape!) It doesn't look used at all. It also arrived extremely fast. Thank you so much!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I like this gre book better than others. It gives you really good strategies so even if you don't know how to answer a question, you can increase your chances of getting it right. From the prelim practice test to the real gre, my verbal score went up by ~100 and my quantitative score went up by ~250.

A worthwhile buy in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but a little scary
I recommend this book with one reservation: it makes highly inaccurate predictions of what your eventual score will be based on your performance on the practice test. I don't know if this is meant to scare you straight or what, but I did 100+ better on the actual GRE than I did on both sections in the book test. Don't let it freak you out! It was the last practice test I took before the real GRE (today) and I definitely went in with a sense of foreboding because I bombed the practice test so hard.

The strategies themselves in the book are good, but for an idea of what an actual GRE will be like, just use the Powerprep software that ETS sends you when you register. It is a much more accurate experience and the scores at the end line up much better with your eventual GRE scores.

I also agree with another reviewer that it seems this book has a whole chapter or so of filler material about how to apply to grad school. Thanks, Kaplan.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's gonna Ok with this book
I didn't fininshed it, but I do have a thorough review of it.
The book is great for the GRE-takers, but you will find it astonished that the program has a sister-program: premiere program!!Know what, I got this fact after I pushed the paying buttom.
But somehow the comprehensive program is still effective for test takers.
Oh, I forget to tell you the latter part of the book--how to apply to college---is somewhat redundant. How could a person be ready to take the GRE when he doesn't know how to apply and select the uni??

5-0 out of 5 stars Great strategy review

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike others, I used this book and got a 680
I spent a number of weeks using this book, it was quite helpful... do the questions over and over... understand why your right answers are right and your wrong answers are wrong and you can't go wrong... between this book and wikipedia you're set. Like I said, this was my only GRE psych prep book and I never even took intro to psych as an undergraduate and pulled a 680 using it. I was a psych undergrad but CLEP'd out of intro. Good resource... It's true that there are no test taking techniques in this book... if you need test strategies get the Princeton or Kaplan book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good practice tests
I used the same brand book to study for the GRE's and took a class, and felt the book and practice was just as good as the class I paid a lot of money to take.So for the subject tests I'm just using this.It gives strategy, but most importantly practice tests.I work part time in educational psychology and what I tell parents, and what I understand, is that with standardized testing the best way to increase your score, (other than taking more classes and studying over periods of time--and realistically who is taking that much time and energy for a test), is just knowing how to test well by knowing the strategy of the test and feeling comfortable with the format. There is only so much more knowledge you can cram into your head before a test like this, so I think time is better spent by understanding it and taking as many full length tests as you can, rather than focusing on content knowledge (unless you have the time to cover a lot of content).
this book is useful in both aspects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow shipping, damaged book... overall very disappointed in this seller. I would suggest going to someone else.... ANYONE else.
Dont even bother with this seller. They dont seem to care about getting the product to their customer, or providing what they described.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Total waste of money. Here's why:

1. This book provides no review material whatsoever. It consists of a couple tests and a CD-Rom which has the SAME tests.

2. The answers to the test questions are not thorough. Reading over 200 answers will not help you learn the material well, as the questions and information are in random order. This is a very inefficient way to study and difficult for consolidating new information.

3. The GRE Psychology test is paper written. I wish I knew before I bought this so-called review book with its CD-rom. It is important to practice taking the test in the format it will be given in.

4. Buy a Kaplan Guide--they're cheaper anyway. With this book you're going to have to obtain an Introductory Psych textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive, do NOT cram!
Although I only received a 500 (23%) on the actual exam, that was only because I crammed and didn't try to adequately prepare and study for the exam. It wasn't the publisher's fault, but rather my poor preparation. I'm supposed to rate the book's content and that is what I'm doing. This in combination with either the Princeton Review or Kaplan GRE Psychology will put you over the top. Visit www.123collegedegree.com for more study material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Math Review
I thought this GRE review workbook competent and concise.Though, it was the only "advanced" math review I could find.

3-0 out of 5 stars Many errors and typos, but OK overall.
I've worked my way through this book from cover to cover and found dozens of errors along the way. There are a few silly typos and ambiguities very early on, and this sort of "sets the tone" for what you expect later on: you quickly learn not to trust the questions, much less the solutions. Obvious typos are one thing, but a number of the questions are so badly-phrased that they are ambiguous. You shouldn't have to guess what the question means!

Worse still, in a number of cases, the *solutions* are just plain wrong. One question begins "A positive number, n, ..." then the solution solves a quadratic to get n=-1.25. Aside from that kind of obvious stupidity, there are more subtle errors in the solutions of the kind that the GRE relies on -- overlooking possibilities, making erroneous assumptions, and misreading the question. For example, the very last question in the book is about 7 books on a shelf having a total of 777 pages, no book is shorter than 90 pages, the 1st 5 books have an average of 105 pages, what's the longest any of the 7 can be? The solution subtracts 525 for the 1st 5, then considers only the last two books and gets 162 pages, ignoring the possibility that 4 of the 1st 5 are 90 pages and the 5th 165 pages. Some solutions don'tanswer the question that was actually asked, another thing that the GRE hammers on. In quite a few cases, the solution is extremely naive "longhand", not done in the quick way that you expect a GRE book, particularly an advanced one, to use. In at least one case, the intersection of two quadratics is found by solving the two of them independently and looking for common roots, rather than equating and simplifying.

Although it's a rather poor book, it is one of very few sources of reasonably "hard" questions, since most of the other prep books are very much aimed at the middle ground of those working toward an average score. It could be a lot worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review for those aiming for 750+ on quantitative section of the
In short, there is no equivalent in terms of advanced workbooks. If you are aiming for a 750+ on the GRE, this is the book for you, along with the following from the same series.

EZ Logic and Stats books
EZ Advanced Workbook
EZ Strategies

The following pros and cons refer to the workbook only.
PROS: The questions are probably just slightly easier than the hardest of questions you may face on the actual exam, so they are good for review.Explanations are brief (pro if you are reviewing and make mistakes due to carelessness, con if you are trying to learn concepts for the first time).

CONS: Needs more problems and it would help to split up the sections as multiple practice tests as opposed to by topic.Gets expensive if you try to buy the whole set.

The above 3 books are basically all that are needed for those that have a solid grasp of all math subjects but need some review before taking the GRE.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate!
The Sparknotes GRE guide was the second book I began working through after finishing Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2010 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation). My first impression was that this guide would give a witty yet thorough treatment of GRE topics and some no-nonsense practical test taking advice. My first impression was erroneous!

First, this book has no margins in which to take notes or solve example problems as you go along. You'll have to squeeze your personal scribbles in between paragraphs and in the upper/lower margins of the page. This wasn't such a fatal flaw for me, but it was an ongoing aggravation as I worked through the text.

Second, the book assumes you are dumb. You might say, "well I am dumb!"But you and I both know otherwise.Students who are serious about test preparation are probably also serious about graduate school. Therefore, the writers should assume we are inquisitive bookish people who want to know both "how" and "why."The authors of this book come right out and tell you "it doesn't matter why method X works, it just does." I wasn't a fan of this oversimplified sarcastic tone.

Third, the examples are sparse as you work through the text.Furthermore, they are poorly designed questions intended to "look" like GRE questions when in reality, they are a bit left field. In short, as I read and worked through the example problems, I sensed that the questions truly didn't mimic the true "GRE style."This brings me to a similar but somewhat unrelated point. This book's chapters follow the exact organizational structure as the Princeton Review book (minus the fact that they put verbal second and math first).I got a sense that the authors simply took the competitors books and condensed them to produce this Spark Notes amalgam.

Finally, the explanations for math topics are poor and inadequate. There are several occasions where the author will have you reading 3 paragraphs of text just to conclude that 1 is not a prime number.Or, they'll spend 4 pages showing how to solve 2x + 4 = 10 and a mere sentence explaining complicated concepts.

Given a choice, I would pass on this book (unless it were free.)Take a look at the Princeton Review GRE book I mentioned earlier and also spend some time with GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test 10th Edition (Practicing to Take the Gre General Test) since those are resources with actual GRE-style questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for the Guideless
This book offers in depth tutorials for those that need the basics covered like it's their first time learning it. The book offers a fun way to relearn and review all that old math you've forgotten. VERY HELPFUL book that I highly recommend over any other GRE guide book (and i've tried a few). This book is laid out well. It does not offer much on your own practice and I've gone to Arco for a GRE practice book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not much help for the GRE.
This is a book similar to a dictionary its good to learn potential words for the GRE but since there is a vast number of words its practically useless since the GRE is a conflicted test that measures your ability to reason through and since this book gives no strategies for reasoning through the answer I would get a different one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I cannot give this book a super high recommendation.

I actually got 670 on my verbal for my GRE, but this book didn't give me much help.

Let me put it this way, in order to get really high grades in GRE verbal, you need a decent amount of advanced vocabulary. The list of words here is insufficient to give you a good score.

I believe that the only people who will benefit from this book are people who already has very good vocabulary and are looking for a quick review on more important words.

The ideal books are recommended in my listmania! for vocabulary building.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book to build GRE Vocab!
I bought countless books to build my Vocab for the GRE and this was the one I found most useful. It is comprehensive and helped be significantly raise my score. If you are to buy one book to study vocab for the GRE, this should be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Help
I must say that my first try at GRE was awful, after that I got this book and studied it like crazy and I improved my verbal score by 200 points. If you are serious about nailing this exam give this book I try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me.
I used this and the ultimate math refresher to prep for the GRE and scored in the 90th Percentile on the verbal section.I'd say that speaks volumes.Considering I'm the guy who just doesn't do well on standardized tests I'd say it worked pretty well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
There is no way you'll be able to memorize all the essays in this book so if that's what you're looking for, forget it.If, however, you are looking for tips on how to prepare for the essay portion of the GRE, common themes you'll find, and you want to review well thought out essays for every possible essay topic (just to get ideas and to get your creative juices flowing), this is the book for you.I thoroughly enjoyed using it as a study guide and found myself well prepared when I actually sat down to complete this portion of the GRE.As I wrote, so many ideas came to me, many of which were touched on in the book.My score was a 6.0!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not situable for my use
I do not think it is situable for my GRE preparation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, insightful, helpful
I truly enjoyed reading this book, not only as a preparation for taking the GRE general test, but also as a tool for self-enrichment. I admit that I don't agree with everything the author put into the issue or argument essays, but, that's hardly the point for reading this book, isn't it? The sample essays are truly extensive and exhaustive, serving as good models for students who might not be familiar with GRE writing. Moreover, very often I find that the essays jump start my own train of thoughts, challenging my point of view on an issue or argument, and that's a big part of reading this book is about, I believe.
This book truly epitomizes the saying - learning by doing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only 1st section is useful
like titles says... 1st section is useful. Essays themselves are outdated and not really written well. Author says himself that he was not under pressure of time and had time to think it thru, in the end all his essays contain some sort of reference to work of Shakespier or some statistics. How sitting on GRE test I will come up with all these sources? So do not waste your time on 2 nd 3 rd part of this book, but do read thru the 1st one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Does its job just fine
Although it's true that the topics are not kept completely up to date vis-a-vis the current topics available on the ETS website, the great majority of these topics are in fact still being used, and hence the book is still useful.I should also add that Stewart uses brief phrases describing the topics rather than reproducing them as written on the official list, and they are not in the same order. But as he explains, this is not his fault, since ETS often changes the order and wording of the topics. However, it only takes a little attention to correctly identify which topic the essay is on.So ignore the other reviews which complain about this.

As a science student, I have done very little "college writing," and to tell you the truth, I find this sort of essay-writing deplorable and asinine. At first, I didn't feel like I had a decent idea of what would be expected on the GRE.But Stewart gives nice, concrete, concise advice and useful if standard pointers in Part 1 to help you get started, which is more than I can say about either Princeton Review or Kaplan.Parts 2 and 3 consist of good, solid, middle-of-the-road answers to "all" (as of a few years ago) Issue and Argument topics. I found his answers to be a helluva lot more instructive than the [poor] sample essays provided by ETS.I can't think of a better way to prepare for the Analytical Writing part of the GRE than taking a shot at the ETS topics yourself and then comparing your answer to Stewart's, as he recommends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book....
There is another book on GRE math which definitely worse than this one (I saw it). This book covers all the material you need, how ever there are not enough practice problems. You might want to solve extra problems from your text books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD book, though not quite enough.
Now I'm having a good time reviewing the GRE Math sub test under the guidance of this book.

It provides me with explicit syllabus for what I need to know for this test. And what's more? It tells me to which extend I need to prepare for each section. GRE Sub test doesn't like a test we might have in college. It covers a wide variety of knoweldges but with little depth. So we must be very careful with how much effort we put into each section. If you go without this kind of guidance, this would be a big problem.

What test takers need to pay attention for is that this book may not be adequate to prepare you for a high score. Other references should also be referred to for a better understanding of the concepts and theories. Plus, for going through the test skillfully, other practice works should also be taken into account.

Finally an advise for non-english test takers: this is a vital book for us to get familiar with english vocabularies related to math, so don't miss it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I think the book is good, hoever, I do not finish reading it, that's why I did not rate it "5".

By the way, I think your worker in China do not take his job seriously. When I was not at home, he simply put the book on the floor leaning the door. It was easily picked by others, and I could have no chance to get it back.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
This book acts as a good guider to help me prepare the gre math test. It provides the knowledge that is needed to grasp and many examples along with concrete and clear explanation. It gives me a big help.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for refresh. but CURRENT ACUTAL GRE is MUCH harder
I reviewed this book more than 3 times before the exam.
After that, I felt somewhat confident about the exam.
but actual exam I took today(4/2, 2005) showed that
the real exam is much much harder than this well -writen
practice book. Some advanced topic, topology, real anaylsis,
abstract algrebra is way way hard. You better review or study with actual textbook.

This is a great tool but I really think practice makes perfect. Get this one or get a similar one if you're studying and practice practice practice. I did really like the lay out of this and it was easy to use and keep track of my progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book for GRE verbal part. I have got a really good score on GRE verbal considering I'm a foreigner. Highly recommend!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not an Encyclopedia of Verbal
I bought this book hoping to get some boosts in verbal section of GRE. Well, it did but not big enough. I got only 50 points of increase. Altough, 50 points is quite an achievement but not enough to pass my personal limit. For verbal section, the key is to memorize and eat up as many words as possible. This book do provide SOME words, but not enough. For words I would prefer to go with Barron's or use free vocabulary builder software, eg. guru's wordlist.

To ace verbal section will need alot of hardwork, especially for foreigners like me. This book will provide complementary assistant but surely not the bible for verbal section. One thing that I like about this book is it categorizes words according to it meaning, positive or negative, and typical meaning, such as there are many words have the same meaning, this book categorize them.

As always Kaplan has the simple strategy to overcome problems. I like the sentence completion stretegy to paraphrase and words elimination. All in all, if you have time (more than 3 months of preparation) I think this book will increase your score alot, then again maybe it's not because of this book, but because you have memorize so many words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots to study, little to show
Though I have to admit my score was probably better on the verbal section having studied this book than if I hadn't, I must say it's a lot of work for such a pittance toward your score. For those who aren't applying to English related programs (or others that specifically require higher verbal scores) I'd highly recommend buying a more general book and understanding the methods for eliminating wrong answer choices. This, along with practicing the test format on the ETS software and other Kaplan software helped me much more than the HOURS and HOURS I spent memorizing a 2,500 word vocab list, only to get in the testing center and discover plenty of words I had never heard.

Though the book does include a list of root words and the top 200 words in context (used in sentences, synonyms, etc.) beyond that it simply ranks the remaining 2,300 as equally important. The lists included which group the words into synonymous categories such as "criticize" or "praise" are also too general to be effective if you're working on the harder questions the book is intended to get you to, simply because those questions invariably include multiple antonyms or analogies that could apply and that require you to know the exact nuances of the word. Probably a better idea is to buy flashcards, which are grouped into high, medium, and low frequency words, so you can buy how many ever sets you will have time to study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have
Getting a high score in GRE Vocabulary do not necessarily depend upon years of experience with the English Language. Kaplan's Verbal Workbook is a living testimony to this fact. It definitely increased my test taking ability. It is a must have book. You should be honest in doing all your exercises. The list of high frequency words at the end is not meant to be comprehensive, but a combination of the understanding of the word roots and a familiarity with this word list will carry you a long way. Good Luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for All Writers, Not Just Students
I recommend this for any writers who want to improve their skills. It helped me with using the active voice, and avoiding vague words and cliches. I liked the section with different essay forms (personal, persuasive, how-to, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and problem/solution). It shows an example of each and then a revision so you can see how the rewriting improved it.
This would be a good review for anyone starting a blog or writing for a website like eHow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
If you have not enough time to study for the GRE writing test but want to get high scores, then this is the right book for you!! I'm from a non english country but I still manage to get high scores for my GRE test after I study this book. Excellent book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good book !
I was lucky to find this book to improve upon my skills for GRE's analytical writing section (introduced as of october 2002). The author describes effective writing techniques by recommending a set of rules & showing instances of each of them in action. The examples provided would be most useful to a reader because it shows what to avoid & how to rewrite sentences more effectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars PassKey for GRE
good first book for review. very small paperback ; I believe Iwill need additional review material, but good place to start for such an unbeatable price

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quick Review for the GRE
I bought this as a supplement to the thicker Barron's GRE Review and I could have done with one or the other. If you just want a quick review, then this is a great option. It is FULL of information and tips and everything that can be found in the thicker book but in a lot less detail.I personally preferred the larger book because I wanted more review problems and such but if you just want to brush up on a few skills and grab a few REALLY helpful pointers, then get this book. My only complaint was that it didn't have enough review problems but it's not even a true negative. Helpful study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
The perfect size test prep book for throwing in a bag instead of the usual Kaplan and Princeton Review monstrosities.I wish they had more editions with just practice exams.Sometimes I wished that the answer explanations were clearer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pass Key to GRE
This is the most basic of GRE review books. If that's all you need, then it's perfect. If you need more explanations of how to solve math problems then this is not the right book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless if you are aiming for a high score
The author of this book is trying to help you more at guessing than to help you understand the matter. Let me start with the verbal section. Some problems in the practice tests do not make sense at all. Reading the explanation I am surprised to find out that some words have meanings that cannot be found in any dictionary.

The math is horrible. In general the graphs require great skill at guessing where the values fall or otherwise you will not get correct numbers. (Practice test 2 questions 14 and 15) There are graphs that are wrong. (Practice test 2 questions 20 and 21). The problems are solved and explained in such a manner that shows you the workarounds if you have no idea how to solve the problem. The essential theory behind the problem that is being actually tested is not explained.

I would not recommend this book if you want to get an excellent score. Rather it would be good for someone who wants to get the scores from low to an acceptable level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit unjustly maligned
You need this book if you are studying for the Literature GRE.

A couple things about this book:
1) Yes, the review chapters are not very good.
2) Yes, you will do relatively poorly on the practice tests. They are pickier and more difficult than the actual exam.
3) Yes, the seven-page reading list at the beginning is something of a joke, although you should really only be using it to pick out the handful of authors you know nothing about to see which of their books might be worth skimming.
4) Yes, the "explanations" for why an answer is correct or not is lacking, and the de-emphasis on literary theory is a bit out of date.

However, the book's been a bit unjustly maligned by other reviewers, some of whom seem a bit bitter that they did badly on its (completely meaningless) practice tests. The fact is, having three full-length practice tests for the Literature GRE, when the Princeton Review book contains only one, is worth the cost of the book alone. You simply need to cover the broadest range of stuff possible in studying, and this book, by its very nit-pickiness, will help make you aware of some holes in your knowledge you didn't know you had. (In my case, early American, where I wouldn't have even known half the names to look up to find more about.)

My advice is not even to score the tests; seriously, it will depress you. But take them! And after each one, go through answer by answer with a reference like the Norton Anthology or Oxford Companion to British Literature in your other hand, and look up each and every answer choice you didn't know (whether it was correct or incorrect). You will cover a lot of ground very quickly, and it will make a difference on the actual exam. That is a smart way to use this book.

Also if you are studying for this exam, read (or re-read) King Lear. Now. Forget that the Princeton Review book tells you not to read any Shakespeare.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!
I've read some negative reviews of this book on this page, and I'm not familiar with the Princeton book, so maybe that book is better than the REA book. But I do have a couple of comments. One: I used this book for my review and I did well on the test. I would not have known what to expect, nor would I have done nearly as well without the review book. Two: Yes, there are some pretty obscure questions on the sample tests in the book. But the fact is that there are lots of obscure questions on the actual GRE subject test in literature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the first 20 pages are helpful
I bought this book before reading all of the bad reviews on amazon, but it cerainly deserves the poor reviews because it was really not that helpful in preparation for the Lit GRE. The first few pages have reviews of major authors in different periods which helped to narrow down the ones to review, but the practice tests are ridiculous. The questions are extremely specific and trivial and do not reflect the true nature of the exam."Cracking the GRE" by the Princeton Review is more helpful, but honestly the best prep one can do is grab some Norton Anthologies and review that way.

3-0 out of 5 stars It got the job done
Bought this study guide and passed my exam with 97%...since I was a vet major so all my coursework and knowledge is concentrated in life sciences and not English, I would have to say that it works!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time/money!
The standardized test prep version of a placebo.Only gave it one star because zero isn't an option. The two positive reviews are hilarious propaganda.Nobody could rate this book so highly... no one preparing for the GRE Literature in English subject test, at least.
Basically, the prep materials at the beginning are ok, but they aren't so great that you need to buy this in addition to the Princeton Review book... the latter will be just fine.
The practice tests are worse than nothing, for this simple reason: they do not accurately simulate the types and depth of questions that will be on the actual test, so they provide test-taking practice that is ill-focused.Honestly, this test is enough of a handful... who needs to make things more complicated?
While it is true that there is very little out there to replace the REA book (in the sense that it promises 3 practice tests), I must say that I regret having purchased it and prefer to move forward with my own skills and knowledge, coupled with what is out there in the way of actual prep materials. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Problems without a process.
The NOVA GRE Math Bible is a good resource for gaining experience working on problems that are much more difficult than the actual test -- however, the book doesn't provide a consistent process, or methodology, for solving their problems. This means that the solution to one problem will not necessarily be applicable to other problems of a similar kind, not like, say, determining whether or not two triangles are similar, or calculating the hypotenuse of a right triangle with the length of two sides given. So don't expect shortcuts and magic tricks out of this book.If you can work under those circumstances, the book does give you enough exposure to difficult problems, and forces you to use your creative problem solving skills, which no other book on the market does quite as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I have tried kaplan and other brands to help increase my GRE math score but I found this book by far to be the best. Some of the questions are indeed harder than what you will see on the test which is a good thing as I stuied from this book for 4 weeks and my quantitave score improved drastically. After the 4 weeks I returned to look at some questions in other math prep books such as Kaplan and I could do them all, even the difficult ones quiet easily. You need to be meticulous about studying the questions and if you dont know where an answer comes from, persist with it until you do - the book does not always explain answers in the best way but I feel this is an advantage as you have to root out the solutions yourself which is the best way to learn.

You need a good understanding of math concepts and this book is not for beginners. It will definitely get you into the 700-800 bracket quiet easily. Acknowledged there are mistakes here and there in the book but the way I look at it is if you can find them and know that the mistakes are there then you are doing good!

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful purchase
I hope to have found what i need to prepare for the Gre quantitative and have good scores. Before buying this product i tried the most known ones, Kaplan, Princeton Review and Barron among others, but they have all been of little use. My first GRE scores were poor, especially the math section of the test.
This book seems more detailed than others, with good explanations and, most of all,it avoids giving you the supposedly "magic tricks" to solve maths problems without using the proper math calculations and algebra (like many other books do ) which, in the end, it's not the best way to get the right answers.
The only problem is that some solutions suggested are not the fastest, and time is crucial in the GRE test.
Overall, it's a good practice book and it's worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comment
This is a great book to get more tricks and knowledge for the quantitative part of the GRE. It has hundreds of exercises of several types, it is well-written and reviews in detail every subject tested in quantitativeGRE. Finally, it has a good, thorough diagnosis test.

However, there are some nasty mistakes in the resolutions (usually 1/2 per chapter). In addition, the exercises groups are not organized by time. This implies a little bit of creativity and extra work for you to find the really quickest ways to solve the exercises in the CAT-type exam. A nice way to fix the last problem would be a CD with CAT exercises, like those offered by Kaplan.

In summary, if you have a book for general preparation (like the ones sold by Kaplan) and you really need to have a high quantitative score (for those who want to attend courses like computer sciences, physics or economics), this one will be a great complement!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
The practice questions in this book are, in my opinion, nothing like the ones I've found in past tests and official GRE test prep material. They're often rather complicated and convoluted, which isn't a problem in itself. But the math questions in the GRE usually have "shortcut" solutions built in if you can train yourself to spot them, while the questions in this book don't, or else they're too tricky to be of use. I find myself either completely stumped or doing long, ridiculous calculations with all sorts of long division and whatnot, neither of which are very productive practice for GRE prep. I'll stick with the official material, thanks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LSAT Review
The book I purchased arrived on time and was useful for a test I was scheduled to take.

No problems or worries with this order.

I passed the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good mental workout
I agree with reviewer B. Peet that the problems in the Arco workbook are unlike the LSAT problems and that the best LSAT prep is to simply take as many of the old tests as possible. However, I think that for $9 it is really worth the cash simply for the mental habits it inculcates - habits that are quite useful on many of the logic games. While the Kaplan book provided tests that were more like the LSAT I found that Arco gave me more of the sort of challenge I was looking for in a supplement to taking actual old LSATs. Also, 75% of Kaplan's advice was fluff and commonsense and could have been said in half the words, whereas Arco's advice was succinct and genuinely helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing
If you are struggling with the Logic Games section of the LSAT, as I am, you might want to stay away from this book. Perhaps it was designed for someone already scoring fairly well and was looking to add a few more points to their score, because it certainly does not cater to the individual trying to learn the basic techniques in solving logic games. I cannot imagine anyone diagramming in a timely manner using the methodology contained within. The structure of warm up exercises followed by mini-games eventually leading up to practice games should work but doesn't. I never grasped how the warm-ups tied into the overall scheme of the game. The explanations following each section were short, at times awkward, and narrow in scope. The sections and explanations just did not seem to build off of each other. Not a friendly environment for someone trying to learn. However, if you are looking for a source for all of the different types of logic games, this might be for you. It contains an incredible variety of game types. You just need to be fairly efficient with them before you get started on this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful study guide
Are the logic puzzles your Achille's heel on the LSAT? Then this is the book for you.

Work through the problems in this book, and the actual questions on the test will seem much easier. The examples in this book are much more difficult than the actual test. I do not think you will ever learn all the catagories of questions and identify each one definitively, but that is not the point of your studies. This book will challenge you and make the process of thinking through the logic puzzles much easier.

The book only gets 4 stars because it surprisingly contains several typos and one wrong answer. I would expect a study guide to have no mistakes.

This book had a definite impact on my score. If you take the free LSAT practice exam and score less than 150, then this book is probably not for you; purchase a more generalized study guide. This book is for the people that want to get the highest scores and accepted at the best rated law schools.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated
While this book does cover all the material for the Logic games portion of the LSAT, the book complicates the material to a point of confusion. In order to remember all the set-ups they use, you would have to study for months. It is a good source but I couldn't get my head around all the different types of games they explain. Try somethig else if you are having a hard time with the games, this will only complicate matters more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential GRE Vocabulary Flashcards
This is a good set of flash cards, a lot of them appear on the GRE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource!
This is a great resource for someone who kind of knows a lot of these words, but has never tried to construct a true definition of them. I haven't used the "extra" cards in it, but I have been using the tab to keep track of my progress. I think any vocab flashcards are great (You don't have to get the Princeton Review) as long as there are many words and you review them in increasingly larger chunks--overlapping.

5-0 out of 5 stars These flashcards are amazing!
When I was looking to buy a set of flashcards, I was very torn between getting the Kaplan version and this version. I have to say that I am absolutely in love with these flashcards! They're visually appealing, while still being basic, provide great definitions as well as sentences and synonyms. It even comes with 50 additional cards to make your own.. genious. I've only had them for 2 days, and I've already learned 50 new words! This has to be the single best GRE-study-aid that I have purchased so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivered quickly and as promised
The item was delivered very quickly and I received just what I expected. You can't ask for more than that!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent cards
I was a straight A college student, and I've already got a few degrees-- I have an itch to go back to school, so I started preparing for the GRE. I'm pleasantly surprised with these cards. I was concerned that I would know all the words already, and that the cards would end up being useless. However, I've just gone through the letters A to D and I'm happy to say there are plenty of words I don't know.

My only reservation is with some of the synonyms; these are often slightly inaccurate, or perhaps 'stretched'. What I mean is, some of the synonyms are actually a little bit wrong (unless you're using the term 'correct' very loosely). There are no glaring errors; I just mean some of the synonyms are sort of off. If you don't know what one of the synonyms means, don't count on it having the exact meaning of the main word on the card.

Overall, I'm very pleased. The definitions are fine (although the sentences are sometimes not the best usage examples). I'll definitely be able to expand my vocabulary with these cards. I'm happy I purchased the cards, and I think they were worth the money. Just be aware they are not true 'cards', they are actually pretty thin. That's fine with me though, if they were thicker, they wouldn't fit in a reasonable amount of space... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst purchase ever made
This book is a waste of time because it is ridiculously full of errors. There are plenty of practice problems, but a huge percentage of them are not correct. Sometimes the equation in the problems section doesn't even match the equation in the answers section. Other times, a silly addition or subtraction mistake was made in the supposed correct answer choice. This book is only useful if you plan to be a teacher and need practice correcting careless mistakes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible title, do not buy
This book has soooo many errors, that you constantly have to double check the answers to make sure that they are, in fact, accurate. There are plenty of mathematical miscalculations, as well as mismatched answer choices! Example Sentence Completion: "People often misrepresented his _______ sense of humor and allowed their feelings to be hurt." Answer choices: A. arbitrary B. axiomatic C. eclectic D. fallible E. mordant. Right answer: E. mordant. Right? Wrong. The answer sheet will tell you that the right answer is in fact D, because "the best choice is D, because Mordant means...." Very frustrating!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! ITS A RIP OFF!!
I went to the store to buy this book.I was attracted to it because of the cliff notes brand and the fact it had a simple and clear study plan mapped out for 2 months, 1 month, and a week. That is all there is positive to say about this book. There are so many glaring errors in the answers for math problems, it amazes me that it ever passed the proofreader's desk.If I was the publisher and author of this book I would be extremely embarrassed that this book had my name on it.I will never, ever again buy a cliff notes book because of this sorry attempt at a book.I have spent three weeks studying from this book and I am beginning to think that there may also be mistakes in the chapters, not just the answers.I am less than a week away from taking the GRE and I have realized I have made a horrible mistake by purchasing this book. I hope that it will not affect my score too significantly. I just wish I could get my time and money back.Do yourself a favor and buy a Kaplan book. They are way more thorough and professional than this book and they offer a money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with their product.Kaplan GRE Exam 2010-2011 Premier with CD-ROM (Kaplan GRE Premier Program (W/CD))

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
I bought this book to prep for the GRE, I really need the help in Math. This book has so many errors in the math sections, that it makes it all the more confusing. How are you supposed to teach me math, when you can't do it!!!!!a total rip off
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK

1-0 out of 5 stars Very basic math mistakes throughout
This book might be helpful for the basic strategies to solve math and other problems, but you will need to ignore their actual answers. Many math problems have both the wrong answers and wrong results of each step to get to them.
For example: To solve 0.0009 x 500 x 0.04 x 20 = ???, one step shown is "multiply 9 x 4 x 5 x 2 = 36 x 10 = 3600" (should be 360). Then they say to count the decimal places that were moved to get to the simplified equation. However, they only look at two of the numbers in the equation instead of all four. They say move the decimal in the result 6 to the left since .0009 and .04 required moving the decimal 4 to the right and 2 to the right. They ignore the 500 and 20 values.
TWO MISTAKES IN ONE PROBLEM!
The right answer is 360 with decimal moved 3 to the left = 0.36
They say it should be 3600 with decimal moved 6 to the left = .0036 ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful Book
They book offers no real insight into the exam. The practice test is riddled with errors.

1-0 out of 5 stars The most inaccurate non-fiction book I have ever encountered
The only redeeming quality of this book is that it eventually becomes a source of entertainment, once you realize that you dare not believe anything you read in it.After just a few test questions, I started laughing out loud at the blatant errors. The book has absolutely no value as a review or practice for the GRE Computer Science test.In the practice exam, many of the questions and answers are filled with inaccuracies, some questions have no correct answer (contrary to claims in the answer section), some answers and justifications don't match the answers presented in the test, and it's clear that whoever wrote some of the answer justifications has no business staying in the field of computer science. If there were any proofreaders and/or technical editors, shame on them for letting this book through.Having seen the poor quality of this book, I will most definitely never purchase (nor read, even in the book is free) anything published by REA. On the bright side, it was printed on recycled paper, but unfortunately is a complete waste of recycled paper.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
(...).I got this book because it was the only thing out there - I thought, whatever the rating, it can't be worse than nothing, at least there's a practice test. That's not a good reason!I was wrong!Just review your textbooks!Or maybe browse Wikipedia, if you don't have any textbooks... or just get some sleep...

I couldn't even force myself to finish the practice test.As another reviewer notes, the very first question has the wrong answer listed. But even before you get to checking your answers, you'll notice all kinds of problems. The test is full of ambiguous or nonsensical wording, as well as simple typos. It does things with its questions that a real standardized test never will: for example, in at least one case it requires a correct answer to one question in order to get the next.Or, another example, it asks multiple questions that are purely about terminology. It has a bizarre balance of content - the question writers seem to be obsessed by context-free grammars.I could go on...

This book is sufficiently bad that:
1) I regret buying it, and marking it up enough to make it impossible to return, as much because it means I gave money to a pack of fraudsters as because I wasted time taking half the practice test.
2) I would never consider buying another book not just from this author, but from this publisher.

1-0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive mistake
From a senior at the Missouri University of Science and Technology studying both computer science and computer engineering:

The practice exam enclosed in this book does not closely match with the present exam made available by ETS 'for free' online. For example, a much larger percent of the questions in this book's exam are hardware related instead of CS theory or math background related.

Worse yet, this book's review sections prior to the sample exam are shallow at best. The most entertaining of these was the 'More Specialized Knowledge' section, which was seven pages in length, with at most two paragraphs devoted to categories such as 'Networks', 'Protocols', 'Encryption, Compression, and Error Correction', 'Heuristic Search', 'Parallel Computation', etc. There's even a note at the end of this section that attempts to make up for these "surveys" with a feint of reassurance: 'Even when you study every single topic in every practice exam, even if you kept every text from every undergraduate course, even if you take the exam twice, you will miss something.' Profound, at the toddler level.

Most unsettling, the practice test is littered with mistakes. Clear, obvious, blatant mistakes that a freshman in CS could pick out! Prime examples include question 1 - the key incorrectly accomplishes a post-order tree-traversal, question 16 - the key does not apply the definition of the tree depth correctly, and question 29 - where the key cites an answer choice that is not associated with the answer value it claims is correct!

1-0 out of 5 stars The easiest way to sabotage your test grade.
I guarantee that using this book will lower your CS GRE score, between the misinformation and errors it contains and the time you'll waste that could be spent on more useful review tactics. I can only hope I stopped reading it soon enough.

Interestingly enough, the author of the brief review section goes on a rant about what makes a bad practice test, in which he manages to describe many features of the practice test in the book itself. I wonder if he saw the questions that had been written by an outsourced team, felt a little remorse, and decided to give a bit of a warning to careful readers to atone for the fact that he'll profit from having his name on this piece of trash. Or maybe he never saw the test questions. Or maybe I'm giving him too much of the benefit of the doubt, and he's simply an astounding hypocrite who knows that you can sell anything as a test review book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing CD with the Review book
This used review book was shipped to me w/o the CD, which was the primary reason I ordered it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor book
I have used books by both Kaplan and Princeton Review. I have taken Kaplan and Princeton Review tests on-line. Both companies make this book and the practice test look shoddy and amateurish. I am much stronger in verbal than in Math but when I took their computer test I got a 672 in Math and a 600 on the Verbal. It is a waste of money. Buy Kaplan or Princeton review. If you want good quality computerized practice tests, you need to pay for them. I thought 6 tests for $40 was too good to be true and I was right.

1-0 out of 5 stars REA GRE review book
Simply put, this book was the worst preparation I can think of for taking the GRE.The verbal sections were terrible. The relations they defined between words were often tenuous at best in the analogies; their antonyms sometimes involved nouns (e.g., the antonym of "mistral" which is a strong wind... it's pretty tough to say that a weak wind is the OPPOSITE of a strong wind, simply a varying degree); and their reading comprehension section was the worst, and even included a typo in one of the readings.Their explanations on the verbal were also deplorable; seriously, I actually think doing their verbal sections may have hurt my score on the verbal section.

The math sections were alright, but I didn't miss many questions so I can't comment on how helpful many of those explanations were.

Seriously, in general, this was a joke of a review book, and you would absolutely be throwing your money away to purchase it.I really regret this purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Software & non-existent tech support
I bought this book in preparation for the GRE.I bought it online, so I based my decision on the claims made by Research & Education Association. They claim to be "The Very Best Coaching & Studying Course".The other reason why I chose this book was because it offered 6 Full-Length Practice Exams.I got the book and I wasn't too impressed with the set up or the explanations, but I thought it would be redeemed with the tests.I tried for hours to get the CD to load correctly. It was written for ancient machines and the patches provided for Windows Vistas do NOT work.I have tried for 2 weeks to get someone in their tech dept. to help me resolve the issues, but I have not heard back.I also wrote to the main office to express my disenchantment, and they also didn't respond. It is the worse $40.00 (I didn't buy it on Amazon) I have spent on a book!!! The only reason why I give it two stars is because it does a respectable job with some written exercises.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will do as much harm as good
Don't buy this book. If you somehow manage to get it for free then go ahead and do the math sections. The explanations for the math answers will be pretty much useless, but at least the math answers are (usually) correct.

The verbal parts will do as much harm as good. Many of the questions have no 'correct' answer and the best answer is not what the book says is the best answer. The verbal sections were written by people who could never ace the GRE verbal. They don't seem to know things like what words really mean and they don't seem too willing to open a dictionary in order to find out. I found myself looking up repeatedly looking up words just so Merriam Webster can confirm that the word doesn't mean what REA says it means.

I took one verbal practice test and now I feel dumber as a result. I immediately whipped out another GRE book I have that was written by the ETS (the people who make the actual exam). After reading all the right-but-actually-wrong answers and the shoddy explanations in the REA book, I really needed to take (and ace) a sensible exam to make sure I'm not insane. I'm not. The people who wrote this book are insane. Don't let this nonsense infect your brain. ... Read more
