4-0 out of 5 stars I don't feel so dumb anymore...
This book is a great introduction to the techniques required to crack the logic games section of the LSAT.It's extremely well-organized, user-friendly, and enjoyable to work through.I don't know how it compares to the prep classes and material from Kaplan or Princeton Review; but at $16.49 it is a lot more affordable, and it gives you enough of a foundation that you can continue to develop your skills using the free practice tests on LSAC's website (and it will probably be a good idea to keep practicing). One thing, if you are planning on taking prep classes, don't do this book first. It will give you a slightly different notation and approach that is just different enough (from the notation and method used by Kaplan or Princeton Review) that it would probably throw you off.But if you haven't got the money for the classes, this book is a great option. ... Product Description
Approximately 110,000 students take the Law School Admission Test, more commonly referred to as the LSAT, every year. The LSAT, used as a measure of a student s acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills, is required by most American Bar Association approved law schools, as well as most others. On a scoring scale of 120 to 180, the average score is 150, with half of students scoring between 145 and 160. It is important to perform well on your LSATs because this test carries a lot of weight in the decision-making process. But how can you improve your score and be accepted into the law school of your choice? Reading 101 Ways to Score Higher on Your LSAT and employing the techniques found within is one way to do so. In this new book, you will learn about and understand the scoring system, as well as the format and the content. You will learn how to read questions correctly, how to control your anxiety, and how to approach each section. In addition, you will be presented with a list of resources to help you prepare and dozens of proven strategies, mindsets, and problem solving methods. 101 Ways to Score Higher on Your LSAT is filled with practice questions and information found in each of the five sections, including reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning of which there are two sections and a variable section often used to pretest new questions. A writing sample is also included, but is not scored. You will find reviews of the skills believed to be essential for success in law school, such as reading and comprehending complex texts, organizing and managing information, drawing inferences, thinking critically, analyzing and evaluating others arguments, and applying logic to abstract concepts. Instead of panicking and worrying about the LSAT, pick up this book and be confident in your test-taking abilities. Whether you are taking the test for the first time or are reviewing for your second attempt, you will learn valuable information and practical tips to improve your score. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars About a 1 hour read...Buy something else
This book is full of short tips, most of which you will probably already have seen elsewhere in places like the Princeton Review and the many 'how to get into law school' type books (e.g. Susan Estrich or Montauk). The chapter on holistic preparation, (prayer, meditation, hypnosis, stress removal techniques, etc.) is the only part that stands out, but it's only one chapter.I've borrowed my copy from a library and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for very ephemeral pleasure of reading it.Thus, since it's short and not very helpful or original, I'd buy something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gives you dangerously wrong ideas
Gives you dangerously wrong ideas such as:
* take a 35 minutes brake during The Experimental Section (do you know where exactly this section is? You might end up taking a break during scored section!)
* take some drugs to control your anxiety or practice some yoga instead of studying
* pick questions choices that are the longest (really?!)
Examples used in her book are not from actual LSATs, they are made up by her and they are quite different from LSAT
Buy a different book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money buying this book
I bought this book because the title was appealing and the good reviews it had received. This book was a huge disappointment. The 101 ways mostly consist of throwaway paragraphs packaged as tips. Here's some of the more ridiculous ways (you can verify these for yourself by looking at the table of contents):
49. Drink Plenty of Water
54. Therapeutic Massage for Stress Relief
56. Hypnosis as a Tool for Improving Test Scores

As you can see, the author believes in a "holistic" approach to the LSAT. As such, a large part of this book is devoted to talking about how you need to eat right, get a decent amount of rest, don't stress yourself out, and other obvious notes that you already knew to do. As for the "questions" that other reviewers mentioned, they are few and far between, and only a handful are from past LSATs. Most of the useful information in this book can either be found on the LSAC's LSAT web page or in the free resources offered by test prep companies (Kaplan, Powerscore, Princeton Review)

All in all, you're much better off buying a real LSAT test prep book from Kaplan, Powerscore, Princeton Review, etc. rather than throw money away on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book!
Thorough explanation of of the aspects involved in preparing to take and succeed on the LSAT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplemental add for LSAT study
Definitely some great tips and not just on the LSAT but on school and working as a lawyer. For the price, I recommend for someone interesting in law school. I really didn't see an increase in my score by reading the book. I think the other study materials are much better for that but this did add some insightful information. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
This book is full of errors. Not typo errors, actual incorrect answers.I noticed some errors with the general LSAT study book by Kaplan, but I had already ordered this one at the same time so I decided to go ahead and start using it.By the second chapter I found 3 problems in question sets that either none of the answers could be correct or 2 out of 5 could be correct.I double checked this with multiple friends, including one who just received a 174 on his LSAT last year, and we all got the same errors.
The discovery was so disconcerting that I won't even use the rest of the book. I ordered the entire series of the Powerscore bibles instead. They are by far a million times easier to understand, and I have yet to see any typos or errors.
Even if you are struggling terribly with the logic games, I highly discourage you from this book.It may cost less, but you can't learn from your mistakes, if the book itself has them!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all that helpful
The book was nice if you had no experience with logic games and needed to know the different types and how to set them up. But if you were already familiar and were looking to practice more and become an expert at the logic games, this book is not going to help you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go with PowerScore
Finishing this workbook improved my confidence but not my score. My score has actually gone down.Don't ask me how that's possible. But the great irony is that, though my logic games score is stagnant, my scores on other sections have improved quite a bit without my really even paying attention to them. I think I would've been better off to just take practice LSATs than to do this workbook.Kaplan has been quite literally useless and maybe even counterproductive.I'm scoring in the upper 160s, so I'm not just someone who is bashing this book out of frustration at my own stupidity. Really, just spend the extra money and get PowerScore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy editing
The usefulness of this book is seriously limited by the number of mistakes throughout. Surely the fine folks at Kaplan could have afforded a copy editor and someone to check the answer key???? Unless the mistakes are part of the Kaplan method - if you're able to find the errors in the instructions, preambles, questions, answer keys, etc., you are now an analytical-reasoning phenom and are ready to take the LSAT.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the Powerscore
Kaplan's logic book is just okay, in my opinion. Like a few others said already, this book needs some major editing. Some of the explanations do not make any sense and they get the answers mixed up, which isn't exactly a good thing if you're just starting to learn about the LSAT and its logic games. Also I do not feel that they give enough practice problems to make ensure that you get the logic games down solid. BUT it's not a total loss though. You can get the basics through this book.

I just received the Powerscore Logic Games Bible today and started working through it. Already I can say that it's A LOT better than this Kaplan book. The strategies are much easier to comprehend and they offer a lot more practice problems and step by step guidelines. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Go with Powerscore instead
I bought this book in edition to the three Powerscore bibles and I have to say, the Powerscore books were much better tools and explained each kind of question very thoroughly (sometimes too thoroughly, but that's another review...).

Here's some of the biggest problems with this book:
1. The practice tests are nearly 20 years old.
2. The CD-ROM won't work on a Mac. So maybe the CD is great. I wouldn't know.
3. Some of the advice in the book is just plain bad. They recommend that you take your iPod to the testing center and listen to music during the break. Electronics are not allowed at the testing center - you can be dismissed if proctors find them. Bad, bad, bad advice.

The one good thing I got from this book is that I was able to sign up online for a free test at a Kaplan center - again, a very old test, but since I was doing self=study, it was my only chance to be in a room full of test-takers before the big day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice is great
This is a nice alternative or additional tool to taking the class.Offers tests and practice exams and allows one to check the answers and give an idea to problem areas.IMHO, it is worth the purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars CD doesn't work in Windows 7 64-bit
Like others, I found myself unable to use the included software in Windows 7 thanks to a request for (now ancient) MCI drivers. For a supposedly updated 2010-2011 version, I question the relevance of information this old and recommend you look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Issues with the CD-ROM:Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
I really wanted to be able to use the included CD-ROM but was disappointed when it had trouble installing.

The error message I got was "This application requires the MCI drivers for Windows to be installed. Please install the MCI drivers as instructed in your sound card users manual." I went online and found how to change the compatibility of the installer, but there was not an option for Windows 7. Windows Vista SP2 was the most recent compatibility option. Also, the date modified for the .exe file was 11/18/2004, which makes me think this program needs an overhaul to work with current, modern computers.

I am not the only one who has reported this problem. While researching this product online, I ran across several people who have had problems with Kaplan GMAT and LSAT CD-ROMs. Until this is a fully functioning program, I just can't recommend it. If you run into this problem, and are perhaps using Vista or XP, I'll post a link to a "fix" in the comments section.

I am currently running Windows 7 Professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Kaplan Review book
The Kaplan LSAT 2010-2011 Edition is a great asset for any Pre-Law Student.

It features real and official LSAT questions. It consists of the book
itself, a CD including several more practice tests and an online component
as well. They guarantee a higher score with effective use of all their
materials.

Our kids have used the Kaplan books for the SAT and the ACT as well. As with all Kaplan books if you put the time in to do them you get great results. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Serious LSAT Student
There isn't a better text out there to explain the ins and outs of the LSAT logical reasoning section, which is 1/2 of the test score! I've taken classes from Testmasters and this text includes material that is not in the Testmasters work books and occasionally mentioned in class by the teachers.

The book takes you step-by-step through making the insanity of LSAT logic into something well understood.

The text is THE "Bible" on the LR section and there is nothing better out there on paper. The best way to use this book is to read and work your way through it and apply your knowledge in to practice tests, which are not included. LSAT students usually read through the book two or even three times to absorb all of the information chocked between its pages. Make sure review EVERY sentence in this book and how it is applied in both simple and complex questions.

There is an additional benefit to the Reading comprehension section. Some questions are similar, such as the inference/conclusion questions.

I recommend this book to anyone serious enough to break new grounds in the LSAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is an exhaustive, but great book to use to sharpen up on the logical reasoning section of the LSAT. I highly recommend it to anyone preparing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Savior of the self-studier
So I took a prep course (some might call them MASTERS of TESTing) a year ago when I first took the LSAT.Not blaming them for my score, but their pacing can leave some behind and not everything they cover is essential, despite their mountains of statics proving otherwise.Didn't like my score and so I decided to take the test a year later but to study on my own.Tried a few other books but their pacing was too slow or over-emphasized topics that were really supplementary at best.I found Barron's, thumbed through the diagnostic test and analytical reasoning sections and knew right away that I'd finally found something worth studying with.

They set the book to take approximately 5 weeks. I spread it out longer for myself (about 7-8 with a day or two breaks in between) but the explanations and layout make it easy for you to review the highlights of a lesson after you've completed it.They inter-mix explanation with problems samples and are thorough in breaking down the reasoning of the answer. They even go so far as to break down the wrong answer choices. After each section, the following diagnostic test focuses on the themes of the last section with an abundant supply of problem samples. You can easily work through them in one or two sittings or save some for later review. Finally, it has two full test at the end to compare your progress to the first diagnostic and compare score progression.

For anyone studying on your own, either after prep-course experience or for your first shot, this book is critical to your success.I felt like I finally learned crucial steps for sections that were previously problematic for me because of reviewable, well paced, sections and simplified, accessible explanations. With each diagnostic test I took, I saw my score improve vastly (10+ points between the first and last), and felt that I finally understood the reasoning behind each problem set. There's a lot of books that claim to have an edge but Barron's LSAT definitely has the best combination of pacing and explanation. After preparing with Barron's I really felt confident going into my second LSAT.It is insightful to problem types you'll actually encounter and when to just move on.This was definitely money well spent.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the worst LSAT prep book I have seen
This book is of incredibly low quality.Do not buy it.

    My biggest complaints:

For starters, the strategies outlined for the various question types are lacking in substance and, especially for the logic games, are absurdly time-consuming.You could spend the entire 35 minutes re-creating just one of the charts or diagrams that they claim you should use for the logic games. You would be better off just guessing than following their methods.

The practice tests at the end of the book are laughable. The questions are full of spelling and grammatical errors and many questions have NO correct answer, in many cases as a direct result of these errors. Many of the questions are confusing and are of obviously lower quality than those on the two actual LSAT tests that are also included in the book. The explainations offered are also laughable - one sentence "explaining" which is the correct answer and no information about why the other answers are incorrect.

(see Practice test 3, section 1, question 12 for a good example - there is NO correct answer and they do not explain how they managed to choose one over the others).

Trying these practice tests will drive you crazy and you won't gain any skills to help you with the actual test. This book was not properly thought out and it appears not to have been edited at all.

Again, do not buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good do not use as your "base" study guide
I have explored (bought or borrowed) almost every prep series out there on the market. I got to Barron's last and I must admit it was very disappointing. I have reviewed both the 12th and 13th editions and they are very similar so if you really love this series just buy one not both.

Now since I don't like this series I will say this, do not try to learn their techniques they truly are rubbish. The explanations are very short and do not give you much insight. Also I really just laughed out loud when I read through the logic games and their suggested set-ups. OMG, if you do these set-ups first off they will eat at your time (way too elaborate) AND they will confuse the heck out of you! It took more energy to try to follow the suggested format then to just use commonsense and guess (assuming the question is just that difficult).

The one positive I will note is that the questions in the diagnostic part and the sample tests are "closer" to real LSAT questions when compared to Kaplan but that isn't saying much. In my humble opinion official LSAT material paired with Powerscore truly is the best stuff on the market for those of you (like me) who are "teaching" ourselves vs. classroom instruction. If you insist on using this just use it for more practice tests but know that these are "easier" than the real deal so your score will tend to be inflated.
** gave this two stars simply because the tests are better than Kaplan, but again that is NOT saying much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very High LSAT Score Thanks to the Bobrow Book and Course
There are so many LSAT products available, it can be a daunting task to pick just one.Fortunately for me, I picked the right one.The Bobrow book/course were outstanding.I had college friends who took other courses and used other materials and were disappointed with their LSAT scores.I got the highest score of all my friends, and it was all thanks to the Bobrow book and prep course.

I would highly recommend this book and course to anyone looking to score high on the LSAT. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of practice tests
I have not yet taken the LSAT, I've actually gone on a different path, but I did purchase this book when I was considering Law School and the book has a lot of practice tests in it which are very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful; note the difference in cover color
I've always used past practice exams as my primary study aids, from the SAT to AP to GRE.So I find these 10 exams (from Oct. 1999 to Oct. 2002) pretty useful.I plan to do the 2002+ exams after I'm done with these. The main reason I'm writing this, though, is to point out that my version (which I bought at the end of 2006) has a purple/red cover rather than the white/blue cover shown in the product image. After comparing the contents of the two, I'm pretty sure they're the same thing-- just in case anyone was wondering.

5-0 out of 5 stars No surprises
I did not much enjoy the time I spent with this book, but it's exactly what it claims to be.In the end, I decided to take a low-end test prep course instead of studying on my own, and I didn't need the book anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Official Preptests...the way to go
Without taking these official tests, my score would have been much lower.Practice, practice, practice.By the time I'd reached the last few tests in this book, my score on each test in the book was the exact same as what I ended up with for my actual LSAT score.

3-0 out of 5 stars not great, but not too bad
The strategies and techniques taught in this book were very useful. However, this book is filled with errors. After working through the first section of the book I thought I was losing my mind because the principles that they had taught me, and I had applied, were generating (according to the book) the wrong answers. But the answers that the book said were correct were blatantly contradictory to the constraints of the questions.I cannot in good faith recommend this book, especially if you are using it as a sole resource, however the logic techniques and principles were somewhat useful. Just watch for the errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Use
This book is really really good. It goes through all game types. It starts out every section with the game type and goes through IN DEPTH diagrams and psychology of each in 3 or 4 games with 8 typical LSAT questions following each. Then after the explained 3 or 4 LSAT games, it gives you 4 more that you do on your own and they provide semi-lengthy explanations of. At the end you have two practice tests. One that you do before using the book and one that you do after reading the book so that you can see how much you improved by. Very good book. This book was created by a group of Harvard law school graduates. They did an excellent job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great accompaniment to recent tests for Reading Comprehension practice.
While this book is not sufficient to ensure success on the reading comprehension section, I use it regularly as an LSAT tutor with my students. Many students particularly dislike the passages about art or literature, and this book's categorization of passages by subject matter helps students to get over the psychological barrier associated with a given type of passage. It is true that the more recent tests have comparative reading passages that were not present in tests 1-20, but students would be wise to use the more recent tests for full-length test practice. This book is ideal for supplementary practice, or for practice on improving speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grouped by Passage Type is Better Than Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice
In a few days, I will post a more detailed review of this book on my LSAT blog. However, I just wanted to briefly note that this book is much better than the previous alternative, Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice.

Grouped by Passage Type contains every LSAT Reading Comprehension passage from PrepTests 1-20, so it includes some Reading Comp passages that are otherwise out-of-print and difficult to find in book form. It organizes Reading Comp passages according to various categories, but it also goes beyond the traditional Natural Science, Social Science Humanities, and Law categories.

For example, it divides Humanities passages into the categories of Art, Literature, and Music & Poetry.

The Kaplan Mastery book just sticks with the 4 basic categories and doesn't do a more detailed breakdown, which would allow you to focus on specific areas. (The Mastery Practice book also just includes a random assortment of passages.)

This book is definitely worth getting if you plan to go through Reading Comp passages in PrepTests 1-20.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste
Let me preface this by saying that I have not, and will not be purchasing this book, because it is a waste of money. This book will sell you the RC from tests 1-20. The Lsat is currently around test 60, and the Reading Comprehension has dramatically changed since around test 40. They now how comparative reading sections and the sections are generally much harder than they were before. If you buy this book you will fool yourself into thinking that you're prepared for the reading comprehension section when you will not be. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy the actual recent tests here on Amazon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grouped by Question Type Has A Lot of Study Material
I agree with the review from Stephan Schwartz.Having all logical reasoning questions in one book and grouped by question type makes it easier to study and is very convenient for practicing my weak areas.I haven't even finished the book yet and already I feel like I have significantly improved on logical reasoning. The price was pretty good considering you get questions from 20 PrepTests.

I know a lot of LSAT prep books give tips on how to study or strategies but this book gave me material to study.Practicing the questions helps you come up with a strategy on how to approach the questions during the LSAT.It becomes muscle memory for the brain in a way that reading about test strategy will never compare to.You don't have to go through all the questions at once but can go at your own speed so you can really master the question types.

I really recommend this book for people having trouble or wanting to brush up on logical reasoning when studying for the LSAT.

The LSAT is an exam which is full of patterns. Because of this, using previously-administered LSATs is indisputably the most effective way to prepare for the test. Logical reasoning questions, especially those with argumentive stimuli, exhibit recurring structures and patterns of reasoning. In order to maximize your potential on this section, it is important that you learn to recognize these patterns and exploit them to the fullest extent. In this volume, Cambridge LSAT groups the 1,012 logical reasoning questions from PrepTests 21-40 by type, and presents each particular grouping in order of increasing difficulty. Thus, as your technique improves in any one category, you will face more challenging questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money!!!
Suggest you to buy PowerScore Logical Bibles and Examkrackers as the preparation guide for the LSAT exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Basic Introduction to the LSAT
This book is a good place to start with preparing for the LSAT; well written, filled with practical & useful advice/material, it is also reasonably priced and not an oversized-waste of paper. Moreover, it is an excellent, inexpensive means of determining whether or not one's aspirations for taking the test and trying to get into law school is worth the time, effort, and trauma. If one indeed wishes to continue, my recommendation is to rely on official LSAT test-prep materials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for intended purposes
Obviously this should not be your only or primary source of LSAT prep if you're serious about getting a high score on the test. You should be studying with actual tests from the LSAC, powerscore, taking a prep course, etc. That said, this book provides good practice and useful advice in a very affordable and compact book, albeit with some poorly written questions that were overall of a lower standard than what I've encountered in official LSAT tests. My rating therefore isn't based on a pure assessment of its test preparation credibility as I would the Powerscore Logic Games Bible, but on how I used it.LSAT prep is all about constant practice and reinforcing your brain to work a certain way.For the times when you're on the bus, have free time between classes, on a plane, waiting around with nothing to do, etc...it's great tohave this compact book around. It offers hundreds of practice problems to strengthen your skills and memory with certain strategies and problem types, which remain relevant even if the quality of these questions are sometimes substandard. No complaints.Just be sure to supplement your studies with more rigorous and complete books/tests/courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a good predictor of actual score
I used this book mainly for the sample tests--but I found that I was scoring about 10 points worse on them than I was on actual, previously used LSATs or ones in other books.I don't think they use practice questions from LSAC, instead making them up (which does lower the price, but still...)

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent studying tips
Pass Key to the LSAT provides good/basic study tips and guidelines for the LSAT. This book is recommended for its information, affordability, and user-friendly layout. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Second Verse, Same as the first
This seems to be a trend with this series of books. I've come across one confirmed error in the book so far but after reading reviews on earlier products I'm quite sure that there are others as well that I assumed I just wasn't understanding because everyone says that LSAT stuff is so difficult. I'm very disappointed that I cannot confirm my score. That being said, the information in the book seems to be sound, as far as tips and hints to use when taking the LSAT, it's just that the writers of the book cannot answer their own questions correctly which means you cannot easily get an accurate LSAT score from taking the tests in the book. I used their tips and strategies to find the errors in the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
This book is inexcusably poor, riddled with typos and errors.Grievous errors include, but are not limited to, a) the answer key for a practice test listing a different answer than the explanation of correct answers for that same practice test; b) practice test explanations addressing different questions than were actually asked; c) practice test explanations referring to a different number of answer choices than were listed in the practice test; and d) reusing practice test questions in the examples you read through in the chapters, reducing the amount of material you are exposed to.Having also ordered and worked through the Princeton Review's LSAT prep book Cracking the LSAT, 2010 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation), I can report that that book not only has no such errors, but also gives more useful tips anyway.

2-0 out of 5 stars Received item dirty
When I received this item it was supposed to be in good condition, there were coffee stains throughout the entire book. It looks as if someone spilled an entire pot of coffee on the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation
Bought this book last month, have taken 5 full tests up till now and I'm pretty satisfied! I started off by buying this book before joining Princeton Review just to get a heads up what I was getting myself into; this book really prepared me well! I'm loving it and I would surely recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars really quite awful
I thought the Kaplan LSAT study guide was helping me... until a week ago I started discovering errors in the practice tests. These mostly consist of disagreement between the correct answers of the answer key versus the answer explanations, but include, as one other reviewer has noted, an instance in which the explained question is completely different than the given question in the test. On the bright side? I realized that I had been making significantly fewer errors than I thought I had been. The downside is I now have no way of knowing how prepared I actually am for the test.

If I had realized this well in advance, I might have had time to switch to a more accurate study guide. Unfortunately, I didn't find these errors until this past weekend, and I'm taking the test tomorrow. Sucks to be me. Hopefully this review will steer you away before you make the same mistake I did.

The only saving grace of the whole situation is that I borrowed the book from the local library, so Kaplan won't be getting any profit off my mistake.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This is not a book to waste money on for deep learning. The "concepts" and approaches to question solutions are really basic and will not teach you anything new, outside of your normal commonsense. The questions also appear too easy, when compared to real LSAC questions which makes me question the overall goal of the book. Also they recycle their own questions!! yes the practice questions in the front also appear in the practice tests in the back! What the heck Kaplan you couldn't come up with additional questions. Lastly, Kaplan, I have noticed uses very similar question structure throughout so many times you can easily guess the answer by simply looking at the word choices or format, which is not the case in with real LSAT questions. I say use this only if you need more practice thinking logically or simply getting more comfortable with the general format for the test. I have been studying now for over 50 hours using powerscore and lsac materials and these products seem much more effective for those who are "on their own" and not taking a prep course. I really feel that powerscore is perfect for those venturing out on their own and who need vast details on how to go about solving problems. Again use Kaplan only for "extra" practice assuming you have extra time to prepare or to boost your ego on down days, since your scores will rock on the EASY practice tests. **I have no idea how Kaplan prep classes are, as I have never taken one, so my criticism is purely based on the publications. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for Those Seeking a Top Score, but not Required
The best prep for the LSAT is to take actual tests and examine your mistakes - for example, 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests and 10 More Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests (Lsat Series). This book from Kaplan is a nice addition, although it's not required.

The questions in this book are not the official questions, and most are far harder than anything you'll see on the LSAT.However, the value in this book isn't getting realistic questions. The value is training yourself to think like the test-makers want you to think.Think of this as high-altitude training. You get your mind ready for the types of questions you'll see on the LSAT, and you do that under tougher conditions than you'll see on the real thing.

Don't rely solely on this book - the core of your prep should be real test questions. But it's worth spending some money for some variety on a book designed for people shooting for the very highest scores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...for what it is
LSAT 180 is a great book...for what it is.It should be used not as a replacement for more standard test materials, but as a supplement. If you are looking for realistic LSAT questions, this isn't the right book for you. What LSAT 180 does is it gives you difficult LSAT-esque questions that will help you prepare your brain for the LSAT even if the questions are remarkably different. For example, it emphasizes process games, which are rarely seen on the LSAT...but which working through is good preparation nonetheless.

I'd say if you can score 168+, you'll find it helpful. But definitely don't use it at the expense of full-length prep tests and actual questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unlike any real question
I've used this book for a week, and I've found numerous weak points in this so-called book for advanced students.

The weakest part of the book is that it does not use any real question --all of the questions in that book are "imagined" by kaplan staff who will never have a chance to write a real question for a real test.

Among all the dissimilarities of three types of questions, LR questions have the most similar materials to the real ones, because kaplan staff did not invent any "new" types of those lr questions. They just changed contents in real questions without ruining the overall logical structures.

Games questions are so ridiculous that you will never have one-millionth chance to see any of SIMILAR ones even if you take the lsat in the rest of your life( let's say 50 times). They are out of scope of real questions.

For reading, they excerpted some philosophy essays or so called plain tough articles from law documents or academic research magazines. They call those articles hard because no layman can possibly understand it without any peripheral assistance. That is totally opposite to LSAC reading principle that you do not need any further assistance to understand the passages. Those passages in the book are not similar to the real ones not only in contents, but also in strutures. They usually do not contain any argumentative elements which prevail in real ones.

I did not raise my practice score after I had finished this book. Instead, I raised my practice score from 165 to 175 after I had gone over all the tests I had done.

Therefore, I think if you really wanna achieve a high-170's in the real one, you should focus on real tests only. Kaplan will waste time of any high-score achiever.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questions not really the flavor of those on the real LSAT.
The book gets an E for effort, but the questions are lacking in flavor from what you'll see on an actual LSAT.

For example, in many of the questions in the games section, you can solve the entire question by appealing to only one of the rules of the game. This is a rarity on the LSAT, and certainly doesn't make for a particularly hard quetion.Much more often, you'll have to combine several clues, and the complexity of the deduction is what makes for a hard question.

Another example -- In the arguments sections, a key feature on the LSAT is the verbatim repeating of several key phrases from the passages to the answer questions -- it is this key rephrasing that greatly helps in choosing the right answer among several answer choices that appear to be of similar quality. This book is, in some cases, much looser with how it repeats phrases, which loses the LSAT flavor, and also makes the arguments questions hard, but not for the same reason that the hard LSAT questions are hard.

The techniques given in the book are all valid, but on the other hand, they're not earth-shattering, and the likely audience of the book (those that would already score at least in the mid 160s or higher) probably already have a good grasp of them.

This book, therefore, probably won't get you from the 165-170 range to the near-180 range. You're better off getting one of the Official LSAT books with explanations (these are good because it gives you insight into how the test-makers think) -- or Kaplan's 2 LSAT's explained.Even though a top-flight test taker won't miss more than a dozen or so questions in the first place (thus limiting the set of explanations that actually would tell you something you didn't already know in the first place), it gives you a set of explanations for the tough questions from which you can derive tactics for getting these quesitons right on test day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I took Kaplan's LSAT course, and the instructor actually recommended this book to the class, which really got my attention because I was bored in the class (I was ahead of most of the students there as far as understanding the basic material the course teaches). But because of many of the negative reviews written here on the book, I decided not to buy it. I kept practicing on real LSAT questions and tests and eventually reached a point, particularly on Logical Reasoning, where I felt stuck. I knew I didn't want a 180 (mainly because I probably wouldn't get one anyway), but I knew the purpose of this book was really not necessarily literally to get a 180 from it but to help push your score as high as it could go! After having some people continue to recommend the book to me to help me out of my rut, I decided to order it.

I received this book and immediately started studying the Logical Reasoning section (this review is mainly going to pertain to this section because I really didn't need help with the others!). Based on my studying, here's what I believe:

Most of the people who complain about this book are either just Kaplan haters (and there are quite a few who really just hate Kaplan even if they have limited or no experience with it)...or are basically complaining due to the Logic Games section (which is the section most people seem to have a problem with/want to strengthen their skills on and, thus, look for supplemental materials on)...or are people who seriously bought into the title literally. If you're already scoring in the 170's, I really don't see what this book (or any book) can do for you, and, to me, there's nothing wrong with that. If you're in the 160's, you're missing enough questions for the book to possibly be of some use...but it depends on what you need help with.

The questions in the Logic Games section that I have studied honestly didn't seem too bad in terms of how much they differ from the real questions or being impossibly hard. My take on if you are looking for something for Logic Games is that if you don't want to spend time doing problems that are unlike the ones on the LSAT (like the rare/outdated ones) or are too hard, then you probably don't need to buy this book. I mean, the point of this book IS to do some really, really tough questions--don't buy the book, then complain when it delivers just that. If that's not what you want, or if you are solely looking for a book that will help you master the Logic Games section, you might be better off checking out Powerscore's "Logic Games Bible."

As for the Logical Reasoning section, I think the book is great. I don't see how the questions differ too drastically or are impossibly hard here, either. In fact, I felt like the questions in this section were basically like the hardest ones you actually do see on the Logical Reasoning sections. I did miss some questions, but reading the explanations and the tips they offered proved very helpful to me because questions that were similar in structure did show up subsequently in the book and on practice tests I took (not to mention I immediately recognized that these questions were like ones I had done and found difficult on practice LSAT's before). Other times, I looked at questions and thought, "They think THIS is a hard question??" I guarantee that if you study this book (the LR section, at least), you will think that at some point...and it will make you feel good, which is what many people told me--at the very least, this book helps by building confidence!

This book DOES give tips that other books tend to leave out. And what they do is anticipate the types of Logical Reasoning questions that students usually consider the hardest and present those for you to do...then give techniques for handling them, basically, when they explain the correct and incorrect answers. I agree with the question types they mainly focus on--Formal Logic (mainly in the form of Inference questions), Parallel Reasoning, Statistics/Numbers, Surveys/Studies and then a mixture of questions from all other categories (but the ones that tend to be of the tougher variety in those categories). But, for example, on the Formal Logic sections, you kind of already need to being fairly knowledgeable on formal logic to have any kind of chance at these or, even, some of the Parallel Reasoning questions! This is where studying more basic guides beforehand like Nova's "Master the LSAT" comes into play!

I like that the Reading Comprehension section of this book presents a chapter devoted to the Science passages, as, again, the writers have correctly anticipated that these are the type that freak a lot of students out the most. Again, I didn't pay a lot of attention to this section because what I really needed was something for Logical Reasoning, but I believe that this book definitely has something to offer to those having trouble with RC, as not only does it present Science passages but also those kinds of passages that are difficult solely by being boring or complex through language/topic despite not being Science passages.

Honestly, if you need help and are stuck, you have nothing to lose by giving this book a try. I was desperate and decided to try it despite bad reviews, and I'm glad I did. If you do happen to be one of those people who feels this book has ruined your score or thinking, you can probably get back into your normal groove by working on practice tests from LSAC before taking the real thing! As far as the money goes, you can always just sell it to someone and get some of your money back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for mastering logic games.
I am a professional LSAT tutor, and I use this as a workbook for teaching my students the logic games. It is a no-nonsense compilation of all of the logic games from tests 1-20, clearly and intuitively organized. This book is a great tool for helping students to master the logic games - I teach them a strategy for diagramming and solving a certain type of game, and then they are able to apply that strategy several times over to reinforce their learning. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are no explanations for the answers!
I was very excited to purchase this book, as I am preparing for the LSAT and struggle with Analytical Reasoning. I somewhat suspected the book did not contain explanations for the correct answers because the book description did not say so; however, I still purchased the book because I figured the practice would be good anyway. I just received the book today. I did a few games right away in excitement and yes, as I predicted, I was frustrated with the questions I got wrong and could not figure out why they were wrong and there was no explanation to help me.
I do think the book will be great practice but I know I will have to continue spending money on private LSAT tutoring to get help understanding the answers I can not figure out.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got -0 in the Logic Games because of this book!
Logic games were by far my weakest section (keyword: "were"!) so I've definitely gone through my fair share of logic games books.First off, let me say that I absolutely love that Grouped by Game Type uses actual and official LSAT questions.I bought the book for this reason alone.Let me give you some words of advice: DO NOT use any books that do not contain real LSAT questions!Trust me, you don't want to waste your time on the fake ones.

I started my prep with PowerScore's Logic Games Bible. It was good but I needed more practice questions.I almost bought their Logic Games Workbook, but I decided against it when I heard that it uses questions from the later PrepTests so sometimes when you do practice tests you come across questions you've already done before. This book turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.I really liked that Grouped by Game Type uses only questions from the earlier PrepTests so I knew there was no overlap when I did practice test later on.

I'd heard that you just need a lot of drilling and repetition to do well on Logic Games. That is sooooo true and this book is PERFECT for drilling. It provides you with 80 logic games from real LSAT's (more than any other book that I know of!)The best part is that the book divides all 80 games up by type.I just did game after game after game of each type until I finally started getting it.By doing this, I went from only being able to finish 3 out of the 4 games on practice tests to getting zero wrong on the real thing! This book is a MUST for anyone not consistently getting -1 or -0 on the logic games section!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grouped by Game Type is Better than Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice
I've written a more detailed review of this book on my LSAT blog. However, I just wanted to briefly note that this book is much better than the previous alternative, Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice.

Grouped by Game Type contains every LSAT Logic Game from PrepTests 1-20, so it includes some Logic Games that are otherwise out-of-print and difficult to find in book form. It organizes Logic Games according to their various types, while the Kaplan Mastery book lumps together some games that are very unlike each other and just includes a random assortment of games. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!Worth the expense.
If you're just beginning to prep for the LSATs, this is a great book to start with.No doubt, you will be using several prep books to study for the LSATs.This book compliments other LSAT prep guides. It was insightful re:logic games and reading comprehension.Plus, the book includes 6 exams with explanations for each answer. The exams were extremely helpful.
Definitely recommend this book in conjunction with other LSAT prep books (i.e. Nova's Master the LSAT, Peterson's Logic and Reading Review, and the Kaplan series).I initially started out apprehensive about the logic skills section(s) of the LSAT; now, I have much more confidence. The CD in this book is extremely helpful. The paced reading exercise on the CD helped me with reading in a more efficient manner. We take the practice test(s) for the LSATs on our own time; it is a lot different when you are under a time constraint during the actual test. The CD was helpful with preparation for this time constraint. There are also practice tests w/ explanations on the CD, as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst LSAT book out there
In preparing for the LSAT, I have used a wide variety of study guides--10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests, 10 More Actual Official PrepTests, Kaplan's LSAT 2004, Kaplan's LSAT 180, Princeton Review's Cracking the LSAT 2004, and this one.In comparison, this book offers you NOTHING.The practice tests are not in the same format as on the LSAT, the questions are often nothing like the ones you see on the real tests, and, as everyone who has reviewed it has said, there are basic editorial errors throughout.Don't waste your money on this book.If you want to do well on the LSAT, this is the way to study:

Your first two purchases should be Kaplan's (or Princeton's, if you prefer) most current LSAT guide and 10 More Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests.Kaplan's book will give you a good intro to the test, along with 3 full tests with a detailed analysis for each question. The PrepTest book will give you plenty of real, recently-administered LSATs to take, though without question analysis.Just getting used to taking the test is the most important part of the preparation process, and between the two books, 13 full tests should be plenty.

If, after 4 or 5 tests, you're noticing your scores plateau around 165, and you want to bump them up, get Kaplan's LSAT 180.It is full of the toughest questions that Kaplan's crew could come up with (along with a few nasty ones you might see adapted from real questions on LSAC's PrepTests), and strategies on how to approach them. The regular, yearly guides are a great way to start studying, but they will only take you so far.LSAT 180 can take you the rest of the way, as its name implies. You should be warned beforehand though--these are THE TOUGHEST questions you will find anywhere. If you can handle these, most of the actual test will seem like cake.

If you burn through all of Kaplan's Tests--including the free online one--and all 10 Actual tests (Like I did), you can always get the older 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests. It's still good prep; the only difference is that the tests are older--December '92 is the oldest; September '95 is the most recent. Some minor things have changed: the older tests are a little harder, which means a lower raw score here translates into a higher scaled score; the wording of questions is different; and some of the types of logic games that are on the newer tests aren't on these. However, if you've taken all the tests in the more recent book, and you know what to expect to see on the actual test, taking the PrepTests in this book is a good way to keep your practice going.

Also, both LSAC.org and Amazon have individual PrepTests available for $8 apiece. You can get all the most recent tests--sometimes right up to the one most recently administered. These aren't as good a deal as the books of 10, but seeing the most recent material--even if it's just 1 or 2 tests--is worth it.Though I haven't taken it, I've heard that PrepTest 31 (June 2000) has the most difficult Logic Game ever on it... that might be worth checking out.

Anyway, that's about it.If you want to prepare for the LSAT as thoroughly and effectively as possible, this is the way to do it.As for REA's book, don't bother.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
This book was a complete waste of money. Like other reviewers have said, it is full of errors, and is simply not helpful. I have only finished the first three tests, and I do not think I'll even do the rest of them because they are a waste of time. I haven't looked into any other books yet, but if someone has a suggestion of a better book, let me know!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many fatal errors!
The LSAT doesn't give you points if you mark the wrong answer, no matter how good your intentions. So why should you forgive the editors of this book who misspell and misuse words in almost every section including the practice tests? I wasted several hours giving REA the benefit of the doubt, but the fact is that this book was slapped together too hastily to give you solid grounding for the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Your Money!
After exhausting all the tests in the one LSAT book I had, I thought this would be a great deal -- 6 tests for the same price as the competitors 2-3 tests.I soon realized the tests were worthless, bearing little similarity to the real LSAT questions.I ended up having to buy another book. ...
