Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Story of Maths is the title of a television series outlining aspects of the history of mathematics. The series was a co-production between the Open University and the BBC and aired in October 2008 on BBC Four. The material was written and presented by Oxford professor Marcus du Sautoy. The consultants were the Open University academics Robin Wilson, Professor Jeremy Gray and Dr June Barrow-Green. Kim Duke is credited as series producer. The series comprised four programmes respectively titled: The Language of the Universe; The Genius of the East; The Frontiers of Space; and To Infinity and Beyond. Du Sautoy documents the development of mathematics covering subjects such as the invention of zero and the unproven Riemann hypothesis, a 150 year old problem for which the Clay Mathematics Institute has offered a $1,000,000 prize for its solution. He escorts viewers through the subject's history and geography. He examines the development of key mathematical ideas and shows how mathematical ideas underpin the science, technology, and culture that shape our world. ... Read more

The study of mathematics for its own sake and the use of generalized mathematical theories and proofs is the key difference between Greek mathematics and those of preceding civilizations. ... HOGM sat, pristine, on a remainder table. That would be cool to have on the bookshelf to amaze and intimidate. HOGM sat, pristine, on my bookshelf, untouched for several years. Then, one day, I picked it up and started to read. Wow, what a treat!

This is a microscopic and macroscopic study of the development of Greek mathematics. Heath traces the development of constants, equations, and individuals, and he explains how the geography, attitude, academies, commerce, and history of Greece helped advance their mathematics. Heath also explains how their alphabet [they had numbers; they used an letter with a number symbol attached to it] hindered their mathematics and forced them to concentrate of geometry which became their defining legacy in architecture and invention.

Even though he explains how many equations and constants were derived and tells the tales of the individuals involved, some equations' creations are still left to the mysteries of history.

Heath takes something that should be repulsive and makes it an entertaining, enlightening, and educational read. Even if you do not care about the constants and equations, Heath's tracking their paths through history is entertaining and amazing.

Once in awhile, Heath would slow the pace as he listed each iteration of an equation. While seemingly unimportant, he explains how each change in the equation's development reduced the error and led to the extremes of accuracy which we enjoy today.

If you abhor math, this book might not be for you. If you are anywhere in between "dislike math" and "love math" this book should enlighten and entertain. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Archimedes Palimpsest is a palimpsest on parchment in the form of a codex. It originally was a copy of an otherwise unknown work of the ancient mathematician, physicist, and engineer Archimedes of Syracuse and other authors, which was overwritten with a religious text. Archimedes lived in the third century BC, but the copy of his work was made in the tenth century AD by an anonymous scribe. In the twelfth century the original Archimedes codex was unbound, scraped and washed, along with at least six other parchment manuscripts, including one with works of Hypereides. The parchment leaves had been folded in half and reused for a Christian liturgical text of 177 pages; the older leaves folded so that each became two leaves of the liturgical book. The erasure was incomplete, and Archimedes' work is now readable after scientific and scholarly work from 1998 to 2008 using digital processing of images produced by ultraviolet, infrared, visible and raking light, and X-ray. In 1906 it was briefly inspected in Constantinople (now Istanbul) by the Danish philologist Johan Ludvig Heiberg. With the aid of black-and-white photographs he arranged to have taken, he published a transcription of the Archimedes' text. Shortly thereafter Archimedes' Greek text was translated into English by Thomas Heath. Before that it was not widely known among mathematicians, physicists, or historians. It contains: The palimpsest also contains speeches by the fourth century BC politician Hypereides, a commentary on Aristotle's Categories by Alexander of Aphrodisias, and other works. The most remarkable of the above works is The Metho...http://booksllc.net/?id=167417 ... Read more
