Product Description
How do people search evidence for a hypothesis? A well documented answer in cognitive psychology is that they search for confirming evidence. However, the rational strategy is to try to falsify the hypothesis. This book critically evaluates this contradiction. Experimental research is discussed against the background of philosophical and formal theories of hypothesis testing with striking results: Falsificationism and verificationism - the two main rival philosophies of testing - come down to one and the same principle for concrete testing behavior, eluding the contrast between rational falsification and confirmation bias. ... Product Description
Puzzled about stuttering? If so, here is a book, written in clear, every-day language, that fits together the pieces of the stuttering puzzle as never before. The key to its approach is the Valsalva Hypothesis. This exciting new theory proposes that stuttering blocks may result from a neurological confusion between the voice and the Valsalva mechanism (which normally assists us in exerting effort and forcing things out of the body). The book demonstrates how physical and psychological factors may interact to stimulate and perpetuate stuttering through a "Valsalva-Stuttering Cycle."

The book sheds new light on virtually every aspect of stuttering behavior - its causes, its paradoxes (e.g., why it's worse in some instances but not others), and its many forms of treatment. Finally, it suggests an experimental self-therapy program, called Valsalva Control, aimed at controlling the Valsalva mechanism, breaking the stuttering cycle, and freeing the stutterer's inherent fluency. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indebted to Mr. Parry for his hard work
This book describes the way I stutter more than any thing else I have read. Mr. Parry has posted videos on youtube and was even available to phone conference with me free of charge. A trial lawyer, he has spent his life trying to crack the puzzles and paradoxes of stuttering, and anyone who uses this book to help them gain a grip on their problem can easily see the effort he put into writing it. I hope I can give back a fraction of what he has to people should I ever master my fluency. The practice routines are very helpful and if you are persistent with them and change your mental approaches to speech, you will begin to notice changes after only a few months. Highest recommendation I could give. Thanks Mr. Parry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - looks like bogus reviews
All these 5-Star reviews made me suspicious, so I took the trouble to do some digging. On the first two pages, most of the reviews are from single-review commenters. Needless to say, this looks shady. On top of that, the reviewers are a veritable United Nations - Africa, South America Asia, Britain, USA on two pages. Also note that only one reviewer bothers to mentionthe "secret" of the book - the butthole hypothesis! C'mon now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlocking the mystery of stuttering
This book is a must read for people who are stuttering. The author Bill Parry explains the physical components of stuttering as well as the psychological aspect in a easy straight forward manner. Mr. Parry unlocks the great mystery of why people who stutter tend to be caught up in struggle with their speech and offers easy to follow self-help strategies to take control of your valsalva maneuver. This is the most interesting book regarding stuttering I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Of course, the book is titled Understanding and Controlling Stuttering. The first half of the book, the "understanding" part of it, is fantastic, and goes into deep detail.

The second half, which is supposed to reveal a "comprehensive new approach" can be summarized in one sentence: relax your butt hole. I am not making this up!! The author is convinced that relaxing your anus will also relax the same part of your body that is keeping you from breathing and making you stutter.

I don't think I have to tell you that his suggestion is bogus, although his reasoning is somewhat sound. As another reviewer implied , the author molds the entire book around his hypothesis, as if begging you to believe him.

This book is pretty good for the "understanding" aspect, but the "controlling" aspect, read Self Therapy for the Stutterer instead, which has tried-and-true methods of control. For those of you thinking of buying this book to find the miracle to cure your stuttering, this isn't it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Believe it or not, this book really helped my trombone playing even though I don't stutter! The Valsalva Maneuvre is quite common among brass playersand this book is the most profound source I found so far. ... Read more

Product Description

This radical reevaluation of one of the foundational figures of semiotics presents Peirce as the theorist of the “machinery of talk” rather than of the mind and its contents. The book is a genealogy of Peirce’s writings on signs that seeks to account for the changes displayed across forty years of his work. The author’s comprehensive knowledge of Peirce’s work brings an incisive understanding to his notoriously elaborate and complex theory of signs, at the same time challenging some standard readings in Peirce scholarship. Freadman introduces the postulate of “genre” in order to argue that the transformation of materials from one genre in and by the objectives of another can account for the modifications in sign theory observable through the course of Peirce’s career. The Machinery of Talk engages on a theoretical level with general issues in semiotics, taking Peirce’s writings as a case study through which to investigate the adequacy of a theory of signs to account for the way “talk” works. It finds that “the sign” is inadequate without the accompanying postulate of “genre.”

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for applied researchers
If you want a useful book on modern ANOVA and regression methods, this is an excellent choice. The book begins with some technical background on robust techniques and then focuses on how commonly encountered problems can be addressed. Included are two-way and three-way designs, split-plot designs, a variety of robust regression methods plus some recently developed exploratory tools. The book also contains a description of s-plus functions that can be used to implement the methods covered. The s-plus functions used can be downloaded for free. S-plus is easy to use and learn and I make use of these functions on a regular basis. If you are more interested in theory than applied work, other books, such as Staudte and Sheather, or Huber, or Hampel et al. will be more interesting. But for applied work, this is the only book I've read that covers many experimental designs that are typically encountered in practice. Even some modern advances related to least squares are covered and can make a substantial difference in accuracy as well as the conclusions reached.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an S-PLUS user? Go elsewhere-
Dr. Wilcox apparently works copiously but unaccompanied (36 of the book's technical references attribute sole authorship to him). With all due respect to the author, lack of collaboration can be detrimental to what was intended to be a basic technical treatise - and this may be one of those occasions. The author notes (p. 11) "We stress, however, that many mathematical details arise that are not discussed here. The goal is to provide an indication of how technical issues are addressed without worrying about the many relevant details."Indeed, the reader may find this concentration of effort a bit contrary with the introductory nature implied by the book's title. This impression is reinforced by a subject index perhaps too terse for an introductory or reference textbook (being only 3 pages of regularly-sized font, while a less-useful "author index" takes up almost 4 pages).

For the most part, this lean 296 page book is not so much an "Introduction to Robust Estimation" as it is a tutorial or user's manual for numerous S-PLUS functions relevant to the subject matter. If the reader is not heavily invested in S-PLUS (S-PLUS being a high-level computer language and interactive analysis environment trademarked by MathSoft, Inc.), he can never fully appreciate the contents of this title. For example, in the discussion of median variance (p. 42), the author notes that this estimator is related to the beta distribution, but does not acknowledge that there are several related functions that can take this name (such as the incomplete beta distribution, as well as its ratio).Instead, an S-PLUS function 'pbeta' defines what was meant. One must therefore resort to cited third-party references or a computer to really grasp the basics in these situations (in this case only to discover the terminology was inaccurate).A fundamental reliance on propriety software packages and professional journal articles for basic instruction and accuracy is a characteristic unbecoming of an "introductory" textbook, in my opinion.

Often, software manuals tied to specific libraries or languages become dated.I liked the fact that the companion software was downloadable, rather than provided on a medium that might be incompatible with the user's operating system, such as a 5 1/4" disk (the link in the textbook has been updated to www.apnet.com/updates/ireht.htm).For an S-PLUS owner already familiar with robust statistics, this book would probably rate higher. However, of the four textbooks I currently own on this subject, I regret to say that this title only sees infrequent use.A better alternative for emphasizing basic concepts and theory is "Robust Estimation and Testing" by Staudte & Sheather (ISBN 0471855472). ... Product Description
Race and those other socially divisive creations, concepts, tropes, ideologies, and behaviors that have enabled human beings to dominate Earth and other species are now obsolete because of weapons, technology, and internationalism. The "big brained" animal must transform and transcend his or her culture with the Ecological Revolution or become extinct. The production and reproduction of social inferiority is maladaptive in a global village. Status superiority and inferiority threaten the human race. Human beings can no longer deny, defy, and defile their animal kinship in their own endless search for security. If human beings fail to change, they may leave the Earth to other social animals who have evolved better paradigms of social cooperation and ecological fitness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "history is made with ifs"
An old saying states that you can't rewrite history. But what afascinating practice it is, when is done with such skill like Morselli's. It's an absolutely enthralling experience I think for everyone to discover, in a novel with a very factual and convincing flavour, that if the wicked guys (Germany and Austria) had won the war, there wouldn't have been no nazis, no fascism, no shoa and so on. But the plot is thrilling too, the way the Empires managed to win with a sort of blitzkrieg tactic; it's moving, seeing the inevitable fall of the nevertheless winnign asutrian empire thru' the eyes of an official who secretely deserves all the merit for the victory. The only flaw is a long intermezzo in which the author imagines to argue with the publisher about history, novel and narratology. Quite boring. But maybe it would deserve a second reading. I think the American reader, used to excellent historical novels, would enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Italian Top-quality Counterfactual Fiction
Past Conditional : A Retrospective Hypothesis is one of the best books written by one of the best Italian novelists of this century. It is a counterfactual story, which explains how Germans and Austro-Hungarians could have won World War I.The plot is simply breathtaking, and gives the reader an idea of the complexity of the war on the Italian Front;it is fully detailed, and presents you with aspects, facts, scenarios that can be surprising for a non-Italian reader. The historical facts are skilfully mixed with counter-historical fiction, creating a well-crafted plot where the latter help you to see the former in a completely new perspective.Well-written, and thoroughly enjoyable, even for those readers who have only a foggy notion of what W.W.I was like. This book proves that alternate history fiction is not a monopoly of US authors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Highly valuable perspectives
Bellinzoni did a masterful job of bringing in multiple perspectives to alternatively support or debunk Marcan Priority and the existence of Q. The essays are of somewhat uneven quality, but most are very well done. I particularly found helpful that there were articles from scholars supporting various alternatives to the currently dominant Two-Source Hypothesis. And it was good that the concluding essay, recognized the difficulties of coming to a definite answer, which stands in contrast to the many scholars who simply assume this is a closed question. This is a great book for people who are familiar with the basics of the Synoptic Problem, but want to go deeper into one of the more fascinating problems of modern biblical scholarship. ...
