5-0 out of 5 stars Great story book!
This is a great story, accessible enough for younger kids (my 7 yr. old loved and understood it.)It will help anyone who reads it (younger and older) to have a more concrete understanding of the how and why behind the pythagorean theorem.

-The book does an excellent job of VISUALLY bringing to life the mathematical concepts and their application, in a way that is memorable and interesting.

-It is also a great story for kids... a young person being observant and trying to figure things out, being inquisitive and curious, and thus being able to find solutions to problems that are helpful in tangible ways to his family and other adults, earning their respect. It seemed "inspiring" and "empowering" to my kids, in the sense that they could see themselves figuring things out and having something to contribute, even though they are young.

This book has been one of my absolute favorites of the various "educational story books" that we have read, because it does the two things I mentioned above so well.We like the Sir Cumference math story books as well, but I like this one even better; it seemed to present the concepts more clearly.

The illustrations are also delightful.

See the "most helpful critical review" titled "Unfortunate Anachronisms" for useful information on a few anachronisms within the story that could be helpful to discuss with your kids, and perhaps teach a little extra history on the side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for young kid
I got this book for my 9 years old daughter. It made her think that math was fun. But the topic was so simple that she only read it once or twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Delightful and informative book explaining the principle of the Pythagoras therom. My kids enjoyed it (age 8 and 11)and I only wish I would have had this book when I was in school!

4-0 out of 5 stars good for all classes
I bought this for my 7th and 8th grade classes and they totally enjoyed it.I wouldn't think so because it was a picture book, but they seem to love it when I read the book to them in an elementary teacher voice. And the explanation of the theorem is good as well and presented in a similar way that I would present it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Way to Introduce Math
What's Your Angle, Pathagoras? is a great way to get students ready for math on a day when you aren't going to start with a computation drill. It is a pleasant, easy read and it not only explains the Pythagorean Theorem in easy to understand language and with pictures, but it also can be the starter to a discussion about possible careers in math.'Tis a great book for students 3rd - 6th grade. ... Author Julie Ellis and illustrator Phyllis Hornung Peacock team up once again to explore Pythagorean ratios in Pythagoras and the Ratios, the humorous sequel to What s Your Angle, Pythagoras? Pythagoras and his cousins want to win a music contest, but first they must figure out how to play their instruments in tune, something that s never been done before. While trying to fix the problem, Pythagoras makes an important discovery--notes that sound pleasant together have a certain mathematical relationship. When Pythagoras applies this ratio to his cousins pipes and lyres, the result is music to the ears. 5-0 out of 5 stars a needed topic
This book is written in an interesting narrative, and couples the story with the math concept of ratio and proportion. Pythagoras gets distracted from his chores, as he works on how to construct musical instruments that will harmonize. The ending is very humorous!I had been searching for a book that addressed the topic of ratio, and this book serves the need well.A must add to a teacher's literacy library! ... Product Description
The main thread running through this somewhat unorthodox approach to the special theory of relativity is the Pythagorean theorem. It appears in its most elementary geometric form in the very beginning of this monograph. Then it reappears in algebraic garb, is further modified and finally reinterpreted to play the role of one of the main characters in the special theory of relativity.

The first four chapters are easily accessible to high school sophmores or juniors. the remaining part of the book may be a little difficult for students who never studied physics, although the author actually employs onlythe notion of impact and presupposes no background in physics. With the aid of the vector geometry introduced earlier, he leads the reader from the impact conversation laws to the famous formula e=mc2. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pythagorean theorem as a unifying theme
The mathematical theorem with the greatest name recognition is the Pythagorean theorem. Originating as an empirical fact used in land surveying, it is easy to prove and the number of distinct proofs is rather large. People from many walks of life have devised a proof, one of which was even the president of the United States (Garfield). The Pythagorean theorem is the unifying theme of the topics in this book. Considered as a special case of more general operations, it is the base for the explanation of some advanced physics and mathematics.
Vector analysis is a direct extension of the measuring of distance, in that direction is included. The basic operations on vectors involves the use of triangles, and the notion of perpendicular is based on the Pythagorean theorem. Since a vector can also denote velocity, it is an easy generalization to include the kinetic energy of motion. Finally, by adding in the potential energy of position and rest mass, the end result is a description of the special theory of relativity. Each step follows as a logical consequence of the previous, giving a unique and understandable derivation of the most famous equation of all e = m(c^2).
With the exception of the last chapters, where some of the transformations are mathematically more difficult, basic high school algebra is all that is needed to understand the material. Even then, a concerted effort will lead to understanding. This is an approach that can be used for several purposes, the foremost of which is to demonstrate how basic, empirical mathematics was the starting point for the development of explanations of the most complex phenomena.
I found this thematic approach to be a very successful one. This is a book that could be used as a supplement in high school and college physics courses. It would also work well as a demonstration of how applied mathematics led to a theorem which eventually led back to more applied mathematics. ... Read more
