I chose him mainly because my favourite paintings of all time is "The Merciful Knight", which I first saw as a schoolchild on my first visit to The Birmingham Museum of Art which has a particularly good Pre-Raphaelite section and I can remember as a child I was completely seduced by the use of light and the composition I found very seductive. The whole thing about this period for me is the romance, it's like a bitter romance. Most of the subject matter within Pre-Raphaelite paintings is usually suffering internally and that's captured on the faces or with the body language and I rather like that, it's not sickly sweet, its rather like a tender trap, there's something a bit more sinister behind it. Edward Burne-Jones was not only a watercolour painter, he was also an illustrator and a designer. He was born in 1833 in Birmingham and I'm a Birmingham girl ..that's coincidental. He first saw the work of Dante Gabrielle Rossetti, and up until this point he had never met an artist or known an artist, and knew nothing about their work, even though at this point he was a self taught painter. He finally got to meet Rossetti through his own push and desire and Rossetti advised him to leave university which he was at at the time, because it was Burne-Jones's intention to enter the church and become a minister, and Rossetti persuaded him otherwise, that he really should follow a life as an artist and I think because of that I find even more captivating, that he didn't really discover his path in life until he was an adult, and I think that because of that I find him even more exciting.

    Extractions: BURNE-JONES The Rare Book collection has ten proofs from the story of Cupid and Psyche in William Morris's unpublished Earthly Paradise on five sheets of paper. The paper is the earliest made by John Batchelor in 1891-1892 for Morris in its two sizes: 28 x 41 cm and 41 x 56 cm. The first has the primrose watermark in opposite corners of the sheet and the second has the primrose watermark in all four corners of the sheet. He was educated at the University of Oxford and later trained by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Burne-Jones firmly believed in the rebirth of the romantic style that the Pre-Raphaelites are so well known for. Inspired by biblical, mythological and medievil themes, his are considered the finest of the Pre-Raphaelites. Notably the Story of Perseus, which can be seen in the Southapton Art Gallery, Hampshire, shows Burne-Jones' dreamy and sentimental style. Aswell as a painter he designed stained glass windows, mosaics and tapestries for friend's firm, William Morris. His windows can be seen at Christ Chruch in Oxford, and Birmingham Catherdral. Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894, four years before he died.
