Printed from Burne-Jones' watercolors, this series of interpretive paintings was begun in 1882 for his own pleasure and was published posthumously. He chose the flowers according to the names that inspired him. A beautiful example of his Pre-Raphaelite art, and a scarce book, this being the only edition. In addition, this is a very fine copy in the deluxe binding of full brown morocco with green leaf design onlays, gilt bordered and tooled, probably by Douglas Cockerell. The binding is signed W. H. Smith and Son and differs from the normal green leather binding. The book is copy number four. Housed in the original cloth clamshell box with a clasp; the box is worn and the cover is detached. The book is in as new condition. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bromer Booksellers, Inc. ; click here for further details.

    Extractions: SEARCH FOR EDWARD BURNE-JONES EVENTS Edward Coley Burne-Jones is the professional name of Edward Coley Jones, English painter, designer, and illustrator, born in Birmingham. He was trained at the University of Oxford, where he befriended poet and artist William Morris . Both men trained with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , who reinforced their desire to restore to art the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. Burne-Jones paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. He designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries for Morris' firm. His windows can be seen in many English churches, including Christ Church, Oxford, and Birmingham Cathedral . He also illustrated books of Morris's Kelmscott Press, notably Chaucer (1896). Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894.

Discípulo de Rosetti, pese a que ambos eran prerrafaelitas, Burne Jones desarrolló un estilo más alargado y menos sensual que Rosetti. Le impresionaron mucho Botticelli y Mantegna cuando visitó Italia en 1859 y 1862. Se diferenciaba de los prerrafaelistas en que carecía del vigor y de los ideales sociales de estos. Pintó cuadros místicos, románticos e históricos que se basaban en temas literarios. Estos temas los tomó de la Mitología griega, de Chancer y de Malory. Burne-Jones pretende representar un mundo de ensueño como una escapatoria a los aspectos negativos de la industrialización. El colorido que trabaja suele ser un tono suave y un dibujo lineal compartiendo la técnica con el Art Nouveau. Este pintor realizó algunas de sus mejores obras en colaboración con William Morris, especialmente como diseñador de vidrieras y tapices, y como ilustrador de libros. La mejor colección de su obra se encuentra en lla City Art Gallery de Birmingham, su ciudad natal.

    Extractions: With Morris, Burne-Jones spent endless hours in the library, finding and discussing poetry. As soon as they discovered how similar their interests were, they bonded and began a rather strenuous working relationship, pushing each other to absorb as much poetry as possible. It was through one of these sessions that Burne-Jones found what was to become his lifelong passion and source of inspiration, Malory's Morte d'Arthur . His first impressions of the poem can be seen in some of the journal entries he wrote while at Oxford. He comments on: "The depth, the mystery, the allegorythe beautiful characters of some of the knights"(Harrison and Waters, 11). Jones in fact became so enamored with the legends that he set out to create his own brotherhood in the reflection of Arthur's knights. A description of this group can be seen in a letter he wrote to his friend, Crom Price: Remember, I have set my heart on founding a Brotherhood.

    Extractions: Edward Coley Burne-Jones was born in Birmingham. He went to Oxford to study theology and was on the same course as William Morris. The two men became firm friends. It was at Oxford that Burne- Jones was to see work by Rossetti and it was then that Burne-Jones resolved to become a painter. In 1855 he became Rossetti's pupil. Burne-Jones's early paintings were influenced by Rossetti until he developed his own style after travelling to Italy in 1859 and 1862. On one trip to Italy, he was accompanied by John Ruskin. Jones also created decorative work for William Morris's company illustrations, tiles, tapestries, stained glass and other crafts. He was an able book illustrator and illustrated Morris' works such as his translation the Volsunga Saga. He produced much work for the Kelmscott Press and designed the famous Kelmscott Chaucer. His creative output was extensive. Rossetti became ARA in 1885, without even having put his name forward, only to resign some years later after exhibiting only one picture at the Academy. Burne-Jones was an all-rounder who had a reputation in Continental Europe, his honours included Corresponding Member of the Institute of France. He was created a baronet in 1894. Burne-Jones wrote: I mean by a picture, a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be - in a better light than any light that ever shone - in a land that no-one can define or remember, only desire.
