He was 70. The team said he died of a heart attack. Police were called to the Grand Hyatt Hotel at 5:30 a.m., and Ashburn was dead when they arrived, department spokesman Officer Kevin Tyrell said. Ashburn, a center fielder who played for the Phillies from 1948-59, was a broadcaster for the team for the last 35 years and worked Monday night's Phillies-Mets game. A two-time NL batting title winner, he finished his playing career with the Chicago Cubs and the Mets. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995. For the generations unfamiliar with his Whiz Kids performance on the field, Ashburn was beloved for his dry wit as the Phillies color man on TV and radio. "I don't think there's been an athlete in this city who had the impact that he did," longtime Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk said. "He was here for six decades. ...

Richie Ashburn Quotations From Richie Ashburn "After fifteen years of facing them (pitchers) you don't really get over them. They're devious. They're the only players in the game allowed to cheat. They throw illegal pitches and they sneak foreign substances on the ball. They can inflict pain whenever they wish. And, they're the only ones on the diamond who have high ground. That's symbolic. You know what they tell you in a war - 'take the high ground first.'" "I'm flattered that so many baseball people think I'm a Hall of Famer. But what's hard to believe is how one-hundred and fifty plus people have changed their minds about me since I became eligible, because I haven't had a base hit since then." "I wish I'd known early what I had to learn late."
