Extractions: talking about a dark obsession Interview by Laura Reynolds Adler "I f anybody had said to me when I was an adolescent, 'You're going to write fiction one day,' I would have said, 'You're out of your mind!'" says Caleb Carr. "Because I thought all fiction was this kind of confessional, drunken, contemporary . . . BLECCCHHH!!" He sticks out his tongue as he says it, then lets loose a cackle. "If that isn't too fine a word to put on it." It was not until 1991 that Carr found a form of fiction to suit him, some 11 years after publishing his first novel, entitled "Casing the Promised Land." "It was one of those bildungsroman, coming-of-age things," he says dismissively of his literary debut. "That kind of pseudo-autobiographical contemporary fiction." The 42-year-old author feels that fiction should be about more than "just what happened to you. If you can't find a way to make it a more universal truth and a more universal experience," he explains, "you're not doing your job as a writer."

Urban Violence Summary The story begins with Theodore Roosevelt's funeral. The narrator, a reporter with the New York Times, decides to tell a story that happened more than 20 years earlier in 1896 when Roosevelt was Police Commissioner of New York City. A serial killer is murdering young male prostitutes. Roosevelt invites the infamous Dr. Laszlo Kreizler to form a special unit to track down the killer. The unit also includes the narrator and three members of the police department. Kreizler's qualification is that he is an alienist who champions the radical new concept of forensic psychiatry: the belief that one can predict a criminal's behavior by reconstructing his personality based on evidence in the crimes themselves. This concept smacks of determinism. Thus, Kreizler was violently opposed by many, including the religious establishment, who believed Kreizler was denying that people were morally responsible for their crimes. Because of the sensitivity of their mission, the small investigative unit operates secretly, but runs into powerful opposition. Over several months Kreizler and his colleagues perform the seemingly impossible job of identifying and tracking down the killer, using Kreizler's psychological methods.

The two books feature the same cast of characters, most prominently Dr. Lazlo Kriezler, a controversial and talented "alienist" or mental health specialist. Carr is a historian by nature, and figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, Clarence Darrow, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, John Pierpont Morgan, Inspector Thomas Byrnes, and Albert Pinkham Ryder appear as fully fleshed out characters also. The premise: a serial killer is on the loose, and the corrupt New York PD is incapable of dealing with the situation. Kreizler's team includes Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, two detective sergeants who are frustrated by their fellow officers' failure to accept "modern" methods of detecting; Sara Howard, a feminist secretary in the station house who yearns for a chance to use her extraordinary mind on more than paperwork; John Schuyler Moore, a journalist for the Times and cast-off member of a high society family; Stevie Taggert, an streetwise 11-year-old whom Kriezler rescued from an unjust prison sentence; and Cyrus Montrose, who plays piano beautifully and was taken under Kreizler's wing after killing a racist cop in a blind rage.
