Der Schriftsteller J.M. Coetzee, mittlerweile zweifach mit dem Booker-Preis ausgezeichnet, hat diesem Thema ebenfalls eine philosophische Erzählung gewidmet. Offenkundig wurde Coetzee dazu von Franz Kafkas "Bericht für eine Akademie" inspiriert, denn dieser wird in der Erzählung mehrmals erwähnt. Konsequenterweise hat der Verlag, der seit Jahren verdienstvoll das Gesamtwerk des Südafrikaners ediert, den Text Kafkas dem "Leben der Tiere" beigefügt. Coetzee bemüht sich nicht um Antworten auf die Fragen, die seine Erzählung aufwirft: Bedeutet Massentierhaltung nicht auch Massenvernichtung?; sollte es, wenn der Tierschutz so vehement eingeklagt wird, nicht auch ein Grundrecht für Tiere geben?; sollte man lieber vegetarisch leben?; woher bezieht der Mensch sein Recht auf Tötung von Tieren?; warum betrachtet er sich als Krone der Schöpfung? Coetzee lässt diese Fragen unverkennbar zwischen den Zeilen anklingen, die geschickt und distanziert den Besuch einer Mutter bei ihrem Sohn und seiner Familie schildern. Die Mutter hält an der Universität, an der der Sohn unterrichtet, einen Vortrag - über Tiere - und führt mehrere Diskussionen in wissenschaftlichen Seminaren und bei einer Soiree. In diesem Rahmen werden Pro und Contra der Tierhaltung und des Fleischverzehrs erörtert, wird die Argumentationskette dieses nicht neuen Streits ausgerollt - von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Kein Wunder, dass die Lektüre bisweilen an den Stil etwa in Platons "Gastmahl" erinnert.

Coetzee's self-penned life story makes sense. The reader will delve into this morbid, rather self-indulgent tale of a young man trying perhaps too hard to summon the muse with the comforting knowledge that he does indeed go on to win global acclaim as one of the most important novelists of the modern era. It also makes sense only if one has read the first installment, which provides vital clues as to why this young mathematician, freshly graduated from university in his native South Africa, tends to spend much of his three years in London gazing at his navel and asking big questions instead of actually writing.

At age 52, he's been divorced twice and he's been demoted from professor of modern languages to adjunct professor of communications. Coetzee by arguing that Coetzee has absorbed the textual turn of postmodern culture while still addressing the ethical tensions of the South African crisis. As a form of "situational metafiction," Coetzee's writing reconstructs and critiques some of the key discourses in the history of colonialism and apartheid from the eighteenth century to the present. While self-conscious about fiction-making, it takes seriously the condition of the society in which it is produced. Attwell begins by describing the intellectual and political contexts surrounding Coetzee's fiction and then provides a developmental analysis of his six novels, drawing on Coetzee's other writings in stylistics, literary criticism, translation, political journalism and popular culture.
