Er bewundert die großen Leistungen der Vergangenheit und die Männer, die sie vollbrachten. Er ist überzeugt, daß Rom die besten politischen Einrichtungen hervorgebracht hat und daß dies auf der Einsicht und Weisheit vieler Generationen beruhte. Er ist entschlossen, diesen ehrwürdigen Einrichtungen mit selbstlosem Einsatz ( pudor, abstinentia, virtus ) zu dienen. Seine ideale Gesinnung ( animus ) orientiert sich am Vorbild der mores maiorum . In diesem Anfangsstadium sind Sallusts ego und animus im Einklang miteinander. Erst als er merkt, daß ehrliches Bemühen in den konkreten politischen Verhältnissen nicht den gewünschten Erfolg bringt, entstehen innere Konflikte. Nun wird ihm bewußt, daß das Ich seiner ehrgeizigen Selbstbehauptung gegen das "bessere Ich" seines animus Entscheidungen fällt. In der Rückschau des gereiften Alters schreibt er sein Abweichen von seinen Prinzipien der Schwäche seines jugendlichen Urteilsvermögens zu. In einer ungewöhnlichen Parallelkonstruktion verdeutlicht Sallust seine seelische Lage: Quae tametsi animus aspernabatur insolens malarum artium, tamen inter tanta vitia inbecilla aetas ambitione conrupta tenebatur;

Sie dient einer biographischen und historischen Aufgabe. Wie andere bedeutende Persönlichkeiten römischer Politik und Literatur, die aus dem Provinzadel stammten, war Sallust voller Bewunderung für die geschichtliche Größe Roms und war bereit, seine besten geistigen und moralischen Kräfte für den römischen Staat einzusetzen (Cat. 3). Die eigensüchtigen Interessen des stadtrömischen Adels ernüchterten ihn zwar, aber er hielt daran fest, daß Rom seine einzigartige Machtstellung einer einstmals vorbildlichen sittlichen und religiösen Werteordnung verdankte. Am Anfang von Sallusts Geschichtsschreibung steht also eine ideelle Konzeption: Er entwirft ideale Maßstäbe individuellen und gemeinschaftsbezogenen Menschseins, die er gleichsetzt mit der Wirklichkeit römischer Frühgeschichte. Römisches Denken sieht in wichtigen ethischen Werten weniger Begriffe als vielmehr innere Antriebskräfte, die den einzelnen Menschen oder die menschliche Gemeinschaft erfüllen und sie zu entsprechendem Handeln antreiben. Manche von ihnen werden in den Rang von Gottheiten erhoben. So verehrt der Römer seinen GENIVS und die Römerin ihre IVNO als die ihnen innewohnenden männlichen und weiblichen Lebenskräfte. Im staatlichen Bereich werden Tugenden Tempel errichtet, z.B. CONCORDIA, FIDES, PAX, LIBERTAS, VIRTUS, HONOS. Ihre Verehrung soll sowohl dem Staat als auch dem einzelnen Bürger innere Stärke verleihen.

Since this episode has raised questions about the moral character of the Republic the subject matter seems to require that I look farther back and give a brief account of the political and military institutions of our ancestors, of how they managed the Republic and of how great a Republic they left it, and of how it changed little by little from the most admirable and the best of Republics into the worst and the most depraved. They had a system of government based on laws but which was called a kingship. Some chosen men whose bodies were weak with age but whose minds were strong in wisdom watched over the welfare of the Republic: these men were called Patres either because of their age or because of the resemblance of their responsibility. When the rule of the kings of which the original purpose had to protect liberty and to strengthen the Republic turned into pride and tyranny under a revised constitution they created annual magistracies and two magistrates: in this way they thought the spirit of men could least grow aggressive through lack of restraint. [VII]. But at that time each man began to have more ambition and to have readiness for action. To kings good men are more suspect than evil men and to them virtue in others is always a source of fear. It is incredible to record how great the Republic became in a short time after liberty had been seized, such was the passion for glory that had grown up.

He was ejected (50) from the senate ostensibly for adultery, but more probably because of his partisanship for Caesar. He served with Caesar after his praetorship and was his governor in Numidia; he was subsequently accused of misusing his governorship for personal gain. His principal works are the Bellum Catilinae, on the conspiracy of Catiline and his account of the Jugurthine War, Bellum Jugurthinum. His history of Rome is extant only in fragments; it probably covered the period 78 B.C. to 67 B.C. There are also two letters, in rhetorical style, from Sallust to Caesar, the authenticity of which has been greatly disputed. As a historian Sallust was important as one of the first to write historical monographs dealing with sharply limited events and periods. Although his style is consciously archaic, it is distinguished by its terseness and directness. His character sketches are particularly impressive and vivid, and his work has found as many imitators as critics. See studies by D. C. Earl (1961) and R. Syme (1964); bibliography by A. D. Leeman (rev. ed. 1965).
