    Extractions: Nineteen Stories A book review by Danny Yee It is hard for me to judge an anthology of detective stories, since I am not a real devotee of the genre. Great Tales of Detection contains nineteen stories by different authors, among them Edgar Allan Poe, G. K. Chesterton, Agatha Christie, Robert Louie Stevenson, Wilkie Collins and Dorothy L. Sayers herself. An important thing to note is that it was first published in 1936; so those wanting an up to date survey of the field of detective fiction will want something more recent. The introduction by Dorothy Sayers (in annoyingly small print for some reason) gives a brief but interesting survey of the history of the genre. Lord Peter Wimsey interessiert sich natürlich sofort für den skurrilen Fall, zumal fast gleichzeitig ein dem Toten entfernt ähnlich sehender Börsenmakler spurlos verschwunden ist. Fehlt da ein Toter? Die Herzogin-Witwe unterstützt ihren Sohn Peter tatkräftig bei seiner wenig standesgemäßen Detektivarbeit. Daß sie dabei für einige Verwirrung sorgt, erhöht das Hörvergnügen nicht unwesentlich. Sayers is best known for her "Lord Peter Wimsey" series of novels and short stories, though she wrote many other short stories and a number of plays and theological essays as well. I should say that her Peter Wimsey novels are among my all-time favorites; reading (or re-reading) one is like enjoying a gourmet piece of chocolate. The writing is terrific, and can be savored slowly. Peter Wimsey, brother to the Duke of Denver, war hero, and amateur sleuth, has been described as the diametrical opposite of Sherlock Holmes. Both are brilliant, of course, but where Holmes is stern, cold, and implacable, Wimsey is (on the surface) one more well-educated upper-class twit. His manner hides a keen mind, and all-in-all makes him considerably more fun. Of particular note are the quartet of novels which pair Wimsey with novelist Harriet Vane: Strong Poison Have His Carcase Gaudy Night , and Busman's Honeymoon . It is in these four that Wimsey's personal growth is most apparent. All of the Wimsey novels are currently in print;

Sayers: The Lord Peter Wimsey Stories As it seems that no one else has put a comprehensive chronology of Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels on the Web, I thought I would give it a shot. The goal of this chronology is to provide a guide for the order in which the stories should be read, and therefore I've avoided giving spoilers in this chronology. Stories in italics are novels, while those in "quotes" are short stories. All the short stories can be found in the volume Lord Peter . The short stories rarely give a clue as to when they occur, so unless given reason otherwise I try to keep them in the order in which they appear in that volume. Year Story Comments "The Vindictive Story of the Footsteps that Ran" Early in the story is the sentence, "It was a Sunday afternoon in that halcyon summer of 1921." This then is the chronologically earliest Lord Peter story, although "Copper Fingers" has a flashback which occurs in 1920. Whose Body? The first published Lord Peter story. Peter was born in 1890, so is 32 in this novel, which takes place in November.
