He was a friend of Pliny the Younger and married the daughter of Cnaeus Julius Agricola. In A.D. 97 he was appointed substitute consul under Nerva, and later he was proconsul of Asia. The first of his works was the Dialogus [dialogue], a discussion of oratory in the style of Cicero, demonstrating to some degree why Tacitus was celebrated as an eloquent speaker; this work was long disputed, but his authorship is now generally accepted. Tacitus then wrote a biography of Agricola, expressing his admiration for his father-in-law as a good and able man.     Extractions: Svou spisovatelskou dráhu zahájil teprve za klidné vlády Traiana a to spisem Životopis Iulia Agricoly, v nìmž oslavil úspìchy svého tchána v Británii. Spis z roku 98 je protknut témìø posvátnou úctou pøed vynikajícím mužem impéria. Ještì téhož roku pak Tacitus sepsal spis o pùvodu, sídlech, zvycích a kmenech Germánù nazvaný Germania (nebo úplnìji a pøesnìji O pùvodu, sídle, mravech a národech Germánù). Toto dílo má obrovský význam pro poznání starovìku v Nìmecku, by vychází pøedevším z knih Caesara a Plinia staršího. Kromì tìchto historických dìl sepsal Tacitus Rozhovor o øeènících, kulturní dokument velkého významu. Dialog má téma úpadku soudního øeènictví, kterým se Tacitus mimo jiné dlouho živil, ve starém Øímì za císaøství. Styl a sloh tohoto spisu se pomìrnì radikálnì liší od všech ostatních Tacitových dìl, což dalo vzniknout sporné myšlence, že autor tohoto spisu je jiný a nám neznámý. Tuto otázku však asi nikdy s jistotou nevyøešíme. Tacitova díla nejsou opìvována jen pro svùj obsah, ale pro svou vynikající formu. Tacitovi se jako jednomu z prvních podaøilo díky síle své osobnosti napsat dìjiny jako historické drama, plného vzruchu, ale pøitom vìtšinou pravdivého. Používal propracovaných psychologických obrazù osobností, hledá souvislosti a pøíèiny. S historikù antiky jej mùžeme srovnávat jen s málokterými Øeky (Hérodotos, Thúkydidés, Polybios) a možná s žádným Øímanem. Jeho díla samozøejmì nejsou bez chybièky, nìkterá fakta úèelovì pøevrátil, ale stejnì ho øadíme k naprosté elitì svìtových historikù všech dob.

Though he wrote quite a bit, he was very "taciturn" when it came to writing about himself. His birthplace may have been somewhere in the vicinity of Massilia (modern Marseilles, in southern France). It was an old Greek city-colony, a centre of sophisticated Greek culture and philosophy in a Roman empire that thought such things effeminate and unworthy. Tacitus was an aristocrat through and through, the son of a member of the privileged Roman "knight" class. He eventually became a Roman senator. This position brought him great wealth and power. Despite his social advantages and very high rank, he complained bitterly about the tyrany of the elitist, autocratic political system and the lack of political and personal freedom in the dictatorship of the Empire. Like many people in such situations, however, he led a very successful public career. This could have been the result of several factors. Perhaps he could deal with the obvious hypocrisy of his position. Perhaps he was personally ambitious or cynical. He may have had a sense of duty to his state, his people or to the idealism of Rome and its "destiny". It may have been a combination of all these.

The works of Tacitus that have come down to us are as follows: Annales Minor Works The titles Annales and Historiae are 16th century, as the manuscripts present both works under the title Ab excessu divi Augusti Historiae 1-5 appear as books 17-21 in the MS. It is generally accepted "that Tacitus completed the Historiae in 14 books, and then wrote 16 books Ab excessu Divi Augusti , but did not complete the prolegomenary and supplemental works which he had projected. The result, therefore, was two historical works which were subsequently combined, possibly by the author but more probably by a later editor, into a single sequence of 30 books numbered consecutively. Z Famous exegete, born either at Diest or Brussels during the latter half of the fifteenth century; died at Louvain, 25 August, 1559. After receiving a scientific education at Louvain, he entered the Franciscan Order, joining the Province of Cologne. At the division for that province; he was assigned to the Low German Province. There, coming under the influence of Francis Titelmann, professor of exegesis in the convent of Louvain, he devoted himself to the study of Scriptures and succeeded Titelmann in the chair of exegesis in 1536. In 1548 he gave up his chair to devote himself to writing. His solid foundation in Greek and Hebrew enabled him to exercise sound critical judgment on the explanation of the different passages of Holy Writ, a quality at that time very rare. Memeranus writes of him: Vir pietatis amans, semper studiosus honesti, Et bona qui semper publica ubique juvat. The fruits of his literary labours were very numerous. Besides many translations of ascetical works from the Flemish and French into Latin, he also wrote: "Proverbia Teutonica Latinitate Donata" (Antwerp, 1550 and 1571); "Scholion in omnes Novi Testamenti libros" (Cologne, 1553); "Epanorthotes, sive Castigationes Novi Testamenti" (Cologne, 1555); "Dye Collegie der Wysheit ghefundeert in dye universiteit der deughden" (Antwerp, 1556); "Inventorium in Testamentum Novum", a kind of concordance (Antwerp, 1558 and 1566); "Novum Jesu Christi Testamentum juxta vetorem ecclesiae editionem" (Louvain, 1559); and finally a catechism in Flemish.
