4-0 out of 5 stars Good computer graphics text
This text has a novel approach to entry level computer graphics using homogeneous coordinates entirely.I struggled a bit with the use of these representations in perspective transformations. However once I got it I found the derivations and formulas to be easy to get and easy to use. The book has an extensive set of exercises with complete answers.I deducted one star because the theoretical aspects of homogeneous transformations could use expansion and simplification. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Advances in low-level synthesis
This collection of papers presents the latest (as of 1993) in synthesis of logical expressions. About half of the papers extend traditional sum-of-products approaches. The rest focus on xor synthesis, timing, and decomposition in to other functions or under physical constraints. One presents, at a high level, the basics of asynchronous system design.

Decide what you want, though. These papers, except maybe the one on async design, address synthesis of logic expressions in terms of fixed primitives. The world has changed since 1993. Even then, sequential logic (especially synchronous design) was very important, and is not addressed here. This also disregards LUT-based function decomposition. FPGAs were already common when Sasao edited this collection, and they have become increasingly prevalent and varied since then. Anyone doing synthesis for LUT-based FPGAs just won't find much of interest.

Commercially important logic systems are a lot more complex than they were in 1993. They have more levels of hierarchy, to the point that multiprocessor systems and communication networks are implemented in single chips. This book addresses only the very lowest level of that design hierarchy, down to one paper on transistor sizing. If this book's subject matter is important to you, great. You may find it very helpful, but you're one of a vanishing breed. More people work in the higher levels of design and synthesis, and they won't see much that they can use.

Product Description
Since their introduction in 1984, Field-Programmable GateArrays (FPGAs) have become one of the most popular implementationmedia for digital circuits and have grown into a $2 billion per yearindustry. As process geometries have shrunk into the deep-submicronregion, the logic capacity of FPGAs has greatly increased, makingFPGAs a viable implementation alternative for larger and largerdesigns. To make the best use of these new deep-submicron processes, one must re-design one's FPGAs and Computer- Aided Design (CAD) tools.Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs addresses severalkey issues in the design of high-performance FPGA architectures andCAD tools, with particular emphasis on issues that are important forFPGAs implemented in deep-submicron processes. Three factors combine to determine the performance of an FPGA: thequality of the CAD tools used to map circuits into the FPGA, thequality of the FPGA architecture, and the electrical (i.e.transistor-level) design of the FPGA. Architecture and CAD forDeep-Submicron FPGAs examines all three of these issues inconcert. In order to investigate the quality of different FPGA architectures, one needs CAD tools capable of automatically implementing circuits ineach FPGA architecture of interest. Once a circuit has beenimplemented in an FPGA architecture, one next needs accurate area anddelay models to evaluate the quality (speed achieved, area required)of the circuit implementation in the FPGA architecture under test. This book therefore has three major foci: the development of ahigh-quality and highly flexible CAD infrastructure, thecreation of accurate area and delay models for FPGAs, and the study ofseveral important FPGA architectural issues. Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs is an essentialreference for researchers, professionals and students interested inFPGAs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start here for today's place-and-route
This book derives from Vaughn Betz's doctoral dissertation. Despite that, it provides a clear and readable introduction for researchers in at least two areas of FPGA tools and implementation: tools and fabric.

This work is best known for the tools that Betz developed, including the Versatile (or was it Vaughn's?) Place and Route - VPR. Nearly a decade old now, VPR has achieved such iconic status that it appears twice in the SPEC 2000 benchmarks. VPR also seems to be the de facto starting point for nearly all current academic research in P&R. Chapters 3-4 of this book, following some introductory material, present the essence of Betz's research. When I say that it all unfolds in a logical, even obvious way, I don't mean to denigrate this work. Quite the opposite. Only a very fine mind and writer can make the subtle appear obvious, and even that statement disregards the huge amount of experimentation and CPU-months that went into proving that it is obvious.

The second half of the book's thesis lies outside of my central interests. Given groundbreaking tools for exploiting an FPGA's structure, a new question arises. Within the range of possible structures, which can most readily be exploited? At this writing, 3.5 Moore generations after this book was published, the answers are very different. The questions remain valid, however, as do Betz's means of answering them. Parameterized tools explore the space of parameterized structures.

Perhaps the sticker shock on this title will put some readers off - it certainly lead me to some fancy talking in convincing my department to get a copy. Compare the price to tuition you'd pay (if you could find a course) to acquire the same knowledge. Despite its age, this book's content underlies today's commercial P&R tools. If you're starting in the field, you must start here.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on the market for this subject
Our company almost did not get this book because of the review posted here. Seems the review was for something completely different than what the book states as its intent.
The twenty dollars we did spend on it has come back in a considerable savings in our transition from ACAD to a 3D CAD system. Almost every situation and pitfall described in the book(we also invested some new problems) played itself out during out transition(which is not yet complete). From legacy designs to legacy employees we went through every problem and situation.
Not to say that using the book as a guide will remove or eliminate all road blocks, but we at least new what was coming and had a variety of ways to confront the problems with workable solutions before and during the transition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly light on real content
I've been doing engineering design for a long time, mostly electrical, but some mechanical stuff here and there. I've done plenty of 2D mechanical drawings. What I was looking for was a book that explained the core differences between AutoCAD-like 2D drafting and the new wave of 3D parametric modeling tools. I wanted an overview of when to use 3D, and when 2D would be quicker. I was hoping for some guidance as to how to approach the modeling of a large assembly in 3D. Some tips for real-world designs, like the thought process to be used when modeling sheet metal assemblies. Do you leave every screw, nut and bolt used to cut holes in the drawing for use on the BOM, or leave them out because they clutter 2D views? Stuff like that. Instead, what this book delivers is breathless prose extolling the superiority of 3D CAD over 2D CAD over and over again. To be fair, the first 5 chapters do a decent job of covering some of the advantages of 3D CAD and the associated workflow, using the usual cylinders and rectangular solids. However, the text is constantly proclaiming"See how easy this is compared to 2D CAD?" Well, no, not really. How do I add 2 degrees of mold relief on that cylinder parametrically? And this leads into what I really hate about this book: the author's answer to that question is: "take college courses, get workplace training, etc. etc" and he spends the last 80 pages explaining the advantages of doing that. Well, sir, I was hoping this BOOK I purchased might contain a little more depth. No such luck.

If you're an IT person or management type who wants to know why your engineers are requesting or need a 3D CAD system, this book is great for bringing a non-technical type up to speed. If you're an engineer trying to figure out how to be productive on a 3D CAD system, well, I guess you'd better take one of the author's college courses, or wait until someone publishes a truly useful book. ... Product Description
The purpose of the book is to develop a generative theory of shape that has two properties regarded as fundamental to intelligence - maximizing transfer of structure and maximizing recoverability of the generative operations. These two properties are particularly important in the representation of complex shape - which is the main concern of the book. The primary goal of the theory is the conversion of complexity into understandability. For this purpose, a mathematical theory is presented of how understandability is created in a structure. This is achieved by developing a group-theoretic approach to formalizing transfer and recoverability. To handle complex shape, a new class of groups is developed, called unfolding groups. These unfold structure from a maximally collapsed version of itself. A principal aspect of the theory is that it develops a group-theoretic formalization of major object-oriented concepts such as inheritance. The result is a mathematical language that brings interoperability into the very foundations of geometry.

The book gives extensive applications of the theory to CAD/CAM, human and machine vision, robotics, software engineering, and physics. In CAD, lengthy chapters are presented on mechanical and architectural design. For example, using the theory of unfolding groups, the book works in detail through the main stages of mechanical CAD/CAM: part-design, assembly and machining. And within part-design, an extensive algebraic analysis is given of sketching, alignment, dimensioning, resolution, editing, sweeping, feature-addition, and intent-management. In robotics, several levels of analysis are developed for manipulator structure and kinematics. In software, a new theory is given of the principal factors such as text and class structure, object creation and modification, as well as inheritance and hierarchy prediction. In physics, a new theory is given of the conservation laws, and motion decomposition theorems in classical and quantum mechanics. ... Read more

Product Description
This monograph addresses the problem of device layout forhigh-performance custom analog cells. In particular, an alternativeplacement and routing formulation is proposed that is designed tominimize the cost in layout quality that is traditionally associatedwith analog layout automation. The goal of analog layout is to minimize the effects of layout inducedperformance degradation while, at the same time, to maximize the areautilization of the circuit. Human layout experts observe a variety ofanalog-specific layout constraints and exploit a range ofgeometric optimizations to achieve these performance anddensity goals. This work is directed at discovering how theseconstraints and optimizations can best be incorporated into automaticlayout optimization. Two of the products of this research are a new analog device-levelplacer, KOAN, and a new analog device-level router, ANAGRAM II [40],which incorporate a more comprehensive set of layout constraints andgeometric optimizations than in any previous systems.AnalogDevice-Level Layout Automation focuses on the formulation, algorithms, and certain relevant implementation details of KOAN andANAGRAM II. ... Product Description
Computer-aided design (CAD) of very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits is concerned with the development of computer programs for the automated design and manufacture of ICs. Automated VLSI design is referred to as VLSI synthesis. Synthesis of VLSI circuits involves transforming a specification of circuit behavior into a mask-level layout which can be fabricated using VLSI manufacturing processes. Optimization strategies are vital in VLSI synthesis in order to meet desired specifications. However, the optimization problems encountered in VLSI synthesis are typically nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP)-complete or NP-hard. Therefore, solutions to the optimization problems incorporate heuristic strategies, the development of which requires a thorough understanding of the problem at hand. Thus, optimization-based VLSI synthesis has evolved into a rich and exciting area of research. Automata theory forms a cornerstone of digital VLSI system design. Sequential Logic Synthesis deals exclusively with finite automata theory and practice. The extensive use of finite state automata, finite state machines (FSMs) or simple sequential logic in VLSI circuits and the recent proliferation of CAD research in the area of FSM synthesis has prompted the writing of this book. ...
