Book Description
A major advantage of a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) is thatits output frequency, phase and amplitude can be precisely and rapidlymanipulated under digital processor control. Other inherent DDSattributes include the ability to tune with extremely fine frequencyand phase resolution, and to rapidly `hop' between frequencies. Thesecombined characteristics have made the technology popular in militaryradar and communications systems. In fact, DDS technology waspreviously applied almost exclusively to high-end and militaryapplications: it was costly, power-hungry, difficult to implement, andrequired a discrete high speed D/A converter. Due to improvedintegrated circuit (IC) technologies, they now present a viablealternative to analog-based phase-locked loop (PLL) technology forgenerating agile analog output frequency in consumer synthesizerapplications.
It is easy to include different modulation capabilities in the DDS byusing digital signal processing (DSP) methods, because the signal isin digital form. By programming the DDS, adaptive channel bandwidths, modulation formats, frequency hopping and data rates are easilyachieved. The flexibility of the DDS makes it ideal for signalgenerator for software radio. The digital circuits used to implementsignal-processing functions do not suffer the effects of thermaldrift, aging and component variations associated with their analogcounterparts. The implementation of digital functional blocks makes itpossible to achieve a high degree of system integration. Recentadvances in IC fabrication technology, particularly CMOS, coupled withadvanced DSP algorithms and architectures are providing possiblesingle-chip DDS solutions to complex communication and signalprocessing subsystems as modulators, demodulators, local oscillators, programmable clock generators, and chirp generators. The DDS addressesa variety of applications, including cable modems, measurementequipments, arbitrary waveform generators, cellular base stations andwireless local loop base stations.
Direct Digital Synthesizers was written to find possibleapplications for radio communication systems. It will have appeal forwireless and wireline communication engineers, teachers and students. ... Read more

Book Description
Modeling with an Analog Hardware Description Languagespells out, in general terms, what modeling with an analog hardwaredescription language (AHDL) adds to the existing field of computersimulation, using specific examples to develop this understanding.
The book is divided into three major sections:

  • Fundamentals of Modeling provides an overview of generalmodeling and simulation concepts that are used in subsequent chapters. These introductory chapters cover topics such as macromodels, behavioral models, primitive device models, modeling hierarchy,top-down design, non-electrical technologies, and the Newton--Raphsoniterative simulation technique. These topics are presented to helpfurther the understanding of what is needed to develop models in anAHDL.
  • Model Implementation begins to convey theimplementation details of the MAST AHDL. The chapters in this sectionshow how to use the governing equations of several commonly usedmodels, along with equations that are readily available fromwell-known textbooks and papers. This information is provided in bothtutorial and reference fashion, serving as an introduction to thebasics of the MAST ADHL. Each chapter builds on the information frompreceding chapters in order to demonstrate progressively more complexmodeling concepts. This culminates with the diode and MOSFET modelsgiven in Chapter 9, which are intended to show the depth of the MASTlanguage and which may be of interest to a more specialized segment ofthe modeling population.
  • Advanced Applications containsseveral examples of designs that use models written in the MAST ADHL.Each example makes use of concepts brought up in the first twosections. The main purpose of these chapters is to illustrate theimportance of using an AHDL to enhance the power of computersimulations.

Book Description
Oversampling techniques based on sigma-delta modulation are widely used to implement the analog/digital interfaces in CMOS VLSI technologies. This approach is relatively insensitive to imperfections in the manufacturing process and offers numerous advantages for the realization of high-resolution analog-to-digital (A/D) converters in the low-voltage environment that is increasingly demanded by advanced VLSI technologies and by portable electronic systems. In The Design of Low-Voltage, Low-Power Sigma-Delta Modulators, an analysis of power dissipation in sigma-delta modulators is presented, and a low-voltage implementation of a digital-audio performance A/D converter based on the results of this analysis is described. Although significant power savings can typically be achieved in digital circuits by reducing the power supply voltage, the power dissipation in analog circuits actually tends to increase with decreasing supply voltages. Oversampling architectures are a potentially power-efficient means of implementing high-resolution A/D converters because they reduce the number and complexity of the analog circuits in comparison with Nyquist-rate converters. In fact, it is shown that the power dissipation of a sigma-delta modulator can approach that of a single integrator with the resolution and bandwidth required for a given application. In this research the influence of various parameters on the power dissipation of the modulator has been evaluated and strategies for the design of a power-efficient implementation have been identified. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a race car, not a Yugo
This book is written for the advanced IC designer and systems engineer (practicing engineer or smart grad student.) It's not for the novice. It introduces all the analog-to-digital conversion and sigma-delta concepts, but it assumes you know basic concepts like how to design an op amp and how MOS transistors work. If you don't, it's better to start with Grey & Meyer or with Razavi's introductory books. The publisher, Kluwer, prints a lot of PhD dissertations - which is what this book looks like.

If you have a good foundation in the basics of modern electronics, you'll learn a lot about sigma-delta and low power analog design. Otherwise, you should concentrate on the fundamentals before moving on to this level of material.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of room for improvement
After spending sometime reading this book, I find that this book still has a lot of room for improvement. This book does not have any proof on all the results that it states. It lacks all the required basic concepts andskips some important topics (IMHO).Nevertheless, it shows a lot of stateof the art circuits and applications. This book is great as a referencebook if you consider yourself an expert on ADC.There are a lot ofmathematics without any detail proof. For a hundred dollar, I am expectingthe author to do some work rather than trying to make some quick money.Iam returning my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to sigma-delta and lots of practical advice
This book takes the reader through a step-by-step intro to sigma-delta modulation. It's full of practical hints on design and testing of A/D converters. It also has a thorough discussion of noise inswitched-capacitor circuits andcompares the switched-cap technique withcontinuous-time and switched-current. It's a great reference book for allanalog, mixed-signal and switched-capacitor designers, not just thoseinterested in sigma-delta modulation. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
From the Foreword..... Modern digital signal processing applications provide a largechallenge to the system designer. Algorithms are becoming increasinglycomplex, and yet they must be realized with tight performanceconstraints. Nevertheless, these DSP algorithms are often built frommany constituent canonical subtasks (e.g., IIR and FIR filters, FFTs)that can be reused in other subtasks. Design is then a problem ofcomposing these core entities into a cohesive whole to provide boththe intended functionality and the required performance. In order to organize the design process, there have been two majorapproaches. The top-down approach starts with an abstract, concise, functional description which can be quickly generated. On the otherhand, the bottom-up approach starts from a detailed low-level designwhere performance can be directly assessed, but where the requisitedesign and interface detail take a long time to generate. In thisbook, the authors show a way to effectively resolve this tension byretaining the high-level conciseness of VHDL while parameterizing itto get good fit to specific applications through reuse of core librarycomponents. Since they build on a pre-designed set of core elements, accurate area, speed and power estimates can be percolated to high-level design routines which explore the design space. Results areimpressive, and the cost model provided will prove to be very useful.Overall, the authors have provided an up-to-date approach, doing agood job at getting performance out of high-level design. The methodology provided makes good use of extant design tools, and isrealistic in terms of the industrial design process. The approach isinteresting in its own right, but is also of direct utility, and itwill give the existing DSP CAD tools a highly competitive alternative. The techniques described have been developed within ARPAs RASSP (RapidPrototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors) project, andshould be of great interest there, as well as to many industrialdesigners. Book Description
Software development environments are integrated sets of tools, techniques and processes that assist in the sys- tematic development of software products. They are intended to support all phases of the software development cycle: requirements definition, design, implementation, test, and maintenance. These Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools typically make use of graphic manipulation facilities and rely on some form of development database to exchange various types of design objects between tools. Facilitated by the availability of powerful workstations, implementations of these technologies are now within reach of every software developer. This volume presents the proceedings of a symposium organized by the GI (Gesellschaft für Informatik), the GMD (Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung) and ESEC (European Software Engineering Conferences). The symposium brought together application development managers and top specialists involved in the selection and introduction of software development tools, leading developers of such tools and well known authorities from the research community. The proceedings contain first-hand information on practical experiences and requirements, development directions and strategies, and key research issues and results. ... Read more

Book Description
This book is based upon work done under the project "Correct Software through Formal Methods" supported by the German Ministry of Research and Technology. As a case-study report on the practice of formal software development, this book systematically presents and compares 18 different approaches to the control of a real-world production cell. Mathematically precise, formal methods play an increasingly important role in software development, particularly in areas where failure of software would result in injury to people or, at best, significant loss of money. By analyzing the benefits and explaining the use and limitations of formal methods on a sample basis, this book provides a roadmap for the selection and application of appropriate approaches and thus helps in putting formal methods into industrial use. ...
