Using a new approach, Mayo Clinic researchers have successfully "taught" an RNA molecule inside a living cell to work as a decoy to divert the actions of the protein NF-kappaB, which scientists believe promotes disease development. The findings are published in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ( http://www.pnas.org/ Although it also plays helpful roles in the body, NF-kappaB (pronounced "en-ef-kappa-bee): * activates genes that promote cancer-cell survival; * enables the HIV virus to reproduce, contributing to the onset of AIDS;

Extractions: The Grinch and Universal Pictures top an impressive list of EMMA winners. Why entertainment tie-ins? They work. Technology is advancing and media is fragmenting, giving the public an unequaled opportunity to enjoy the show whatever that show may be and in whatever format it may be delivered. And while the marketing world is expending a lot of energy these days identifying the changing needs of consumers as individuals, one thing remains constant: everybody loves...
The Chronicle: 2/22/2002: Hungry To Teach From the issue dated February 22, 2002. NOTES FROM ACADEME Hungry toTeach. By LAWRENCE BIEMILLER Chestertown, Md. Douglas W. Darnowski's http://chronicle.merit.edu/free/v48/i24/24a04001.htm
Extractions: Chestertown, Md. Douglas W. Darnowski's small backyard greenhouse is crowded with plants young orange trees in pots on the pebbled floor, water hyacinths in dark tubs presided over by croaking frogs, sundews and triggerplants and a blooming orchid on the sunny benches. On a cold afternoon, the plants inhabit an earthly paradise of warmth, humidity, and greenery. But as Mr. Darnowski's tour moves from pot to pot, from description to description, from scheme to dark Darwinian scheme, the greenhouse begins to seem more like a house of silent terrors. "Excuse me," he tells a frog he jostles as he reaches into a tub to lift up a small, floating bladderwort. He points to its miniature bladders, which are actually suction devices that are activated when tiny water creatures approach the creatures are pulled into the bladders and slowly devoured. The sparkling sundews on the benches consume their prey with digestive enzymes after snaring them with fine, sticky hairs, he says. The pitcher plants lure insects into elegant pitcherlike leaves filled with viscous fluid in which the insects drown and are digested. Every second container, it seems, holds another carnivore exotic pygmy sundews the size of a silver dollar, waterwheel plants, forked sundews, Berman's sundews, all carefully tended. Most of the carnivorous plants are normally found in shallows or in poor, boggy soil, and all have a craving for nitrogen that they satisfy with occasional snacks of insects, small crustaceans, or in the case of the tiniest waterborne plants single-celled creatures that you may have seen swimming around on microscope slides back in high school.

Extractions: Printed in PHS #13, 1996. In 1990, in our neighboring city of Anaheim, California, AIDS activists handed out condoms to eager teens in front of their high school. School officials, observing what was occurring, were only concerned that "activists stayed on the sidewalk and didn't block traffic . . . " One teenage condom recipient remarked, "They know we're going to do it anyway, so why not give us some protection?" Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler, in writing their new book Right From Wrong, found that casual regard for truth and falsehood and inability to identify right and wrong characterize a majority of today's young people, including those who have grown up within the Church. Statistics such as those from a 1989 Gallup poll report, "Cheating is rampant in high school and college . . . about 75 percent of high school students admit to cheating, while about 50 percent of college students do." Still, we are shocked when we also discover, as did McDowell and Hostetler, that 66 percent of "Christian" young people lie to those in authority. Most Christian home educators find such attitudes shocking or dismaying because they so clearly violate God's law. We sometimes fail to realize that many folks now consider basing ethics and morality on God's law backwards and ignorant. We even find "Christian" churches that teach a form of self-centered, psychological morality that substitutes man's rationalizations for God's truth.
