    Extractions: A palynologist is a person who examines minute microfossils and especially pollen grains and spores liberated from plant communities living in the geological past. These have accumulated in ancient sediments which are frequently lithified as rocks. Palynologists working in these ancient rock sequences will often assist other geologists working on the stratigraphic record to establish the age of these strata. This work is of great importance to the petroleum industry. Palynologists working in younger parts of the geological column can provide vital information about the nature and extent of plant communities living in the recent past. Here the pollen grains are preserved in unconsolidated sediments. The results from pollen analysis are used by archaeologists and Quaternary workers trying to establish paleoenvironmental records, and, most recently, by computer modellers reconstructing climate patterns in global change studies.

View looking west towards Twin Diapirs (Carboniferous-Permian evaporite diapirs) in the forground, and Split Mountain (to the right) on Kanguk Peninsula, western Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic. The youngest units visible are the black basalt flows of the Strand Fiord Formation, capping cliffs over 800 metres tall on Split Mountain, about 6km away. These are underlain (in order) by thin black shales of the Bastion Ridge Formation (marine), the Hassel Formation (sandstone, nearshore marine) and Christopher Formation (shale, shelf marine), all Cretaceous in age, and the subjects of the study. In the foreground, around the orange-yellow diapirs, some of the sandstone of the Isachsen Formation is visible. The orange-yellow colour of the diapirs is caused by oxidation of sulphide minerals associated with the diapirs.

It is impossible to understand the stratigraphic and geographic distribution of ancient life on this planet without having at least a basic knowledge of these subjects. In addition, an understanding of radiometric dating is also beneficial, although you will not have to learn much about chemistry and physics to achieve that understanding. This page is divided into two rather long sections. The first section lists all the geologic periods from most recent to most ancient. Wherever possible a series of maps is presented showing the size and position of land areas during each period. Also a small list of links is given for a description of the period and for museum and fossil exhibits related to it. The second section of this page contains a dozen or more broad topics within paleontology with a variety of links to help you explore each subject area. Those links will in turn offer you additional sources of data. A great deal about the fossil record of life is available online to help you learn. But I urge you to read a couple of books and a journal or two and, if possible, to take an introductory course in paleontology. New fossils are being reported almost daily and old, troublesome gaps in the fossil record are rapidly being filled.
