I have a good-sized collection of these which were sold under the trade name Tru Vues and were coiled into little sleeves and then in boxes. The exhibition, entitled Nocturnal Moments/Waking Dreams , is comprised of stereoscopic images in several 3-D print formats by these innovative artists. The opening will be held October 1, from 6: P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The show will run through October 31, 1999 at Dream's Light Gallery, located at 106 5th Street, in Charlottesville, Virginia. In Nocturnal Moments , Lynn Butler presents her dreamlike 3-D photography using cutting-edge full color StereoJet prints, viewed with polarized glasses. Her stereographs of horses and nudes in the nighttime forest setting reveal her love of the animals and of the places and landscapes they inhabit. Butler's three-dimensional work is a rarity in the art world as the StereoJet technology she employs is still in development at the Rowland Institute for Science. The prints are similar to so-called Vectographs, first developed in 1940 by Edwin Land for use in examining aerial stereographs during the war effort. The StereoJets bring the improvement of full color 3-D images and the promise of wide availability in the future, as they are printed using mostly off-the-shelf inkjet technology. Currently, this technology is available to only a few artists in the stereoscopic genre.

As early as 1584, Leonardo da Vinci, one of the great scientific artists, studied the perception of depth. Stereoscopic Photography Stereoscopic, or 3-D photography, works because it is able to recreate the illusion of depth. Human eyes are set about two-and-a-half inches apart, so each eye sees an image slightly differently. If you take two separate photographs that same distance apart, with a suitable viewer it is possible to recreate that illusion of depth. There is some dispute in 3-D circles whether the concept was invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone who, in June 1838, gave an address to the Royal Scottish Society of Arts on the phenomena of binocularvision. He made geometric 3-D drawings and a device to view them called a reflecting mirror stereoscrope. (This is preserved at the Science Museum in London.) Almost twelve years later, the Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster invented the first practical photographic device called the lenticular stereoscope. Early workers in this field include Roger Fenton, who took photographs in Russia, when he visited there in 1852, and Jules Duboscq, who made stereoscopes and stereoscopic daguerreotypes. Duboscq in turn caused Antoine Claudet to become interested in stereoscopy; Claudet patented stereoscopes in 1853.

For example, they can be stored in databases and later retrieved; transmitted electronically over long distances; viewed on color monitors; used in computer simulations; manipulated and edited using software tools; and used as templates for making copieseither electronic or physical ones.

    Extractions: HOW TO BUILD A 3-D MOVIE CAMERA/PROJECTION UNIT by Adam Ross - AKA 'Larry Wilson' - Written for publication on the Sledgeham Film 3-D Pages This, the first installment in a series of articles, is meant to describe the construction, operation and theory of a stereoscopic motion picture apparatus. The device described can be built by just about anyone with moderate technical ability. What is every bit as important as accurate construction and included here is understanding of the principles at work in the optical system to be described. This system can be used with any film or video format, as long as it is understood that the final product is intended to be projected, and from one single optical axis (lens). Three beam video projectors cannot be employed with this system. The format yields a projected image of 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The image can be shown in full color with light polarization, in monochrome with light polarization, or in monochrome with anaglyphic filters such as red and cyan. Color anaglyph presentation is NOT recommended. Actual stereo projection test used to calibrate Vari-Vision Since many of those attempting to build and operate this device have absolutely no prior experience with 3-D in any form, the instructions will have to be  both overly simplified AND overly complicated, for there are important theories of stereoscopy that must be understood along the way. A good analogy is a layperson building a liquid fueled space rocket from printed instructions. It would of course be helpful if that layperson learned a thing or two about rocket science along the way, but not so much as to hinder the entire project.

For the third-dimension to be revealed you must first "fuse" two images, bring them together. The links below contain examples and viewing instructions. Walleye Viewing - The left image is viewed with the left eye, and the right image viewed with the right eye. This works well for images that are small and spaced the same distance as your eyes. If the images are too large or too far apart the eyes would are forced to diverge from each other, hence the term "walleyed". Not everyone can easily view this way, and for them crosseye viewing is often easier. Crosseye Viewing - The opposite of Walleye. The left image is on the right and vice-versa. The images are fused by crossing the eyes. This is more natural to some people as our eyes normally cross when we view and focus up close. This is the preferred method for larger photographs. In order to objectively perform these duties, police need to gather accurate information and clearly explain the crime scene and physical evidence in a court of law. Part of this information includes the documentation of the incident. Documenting an incident has always been divided into three categories: notes, sketch and photography. This method of recording an incident has been the standard for years. The major drawback to this is that the visual documents of sketches and photographs are two-dimensional. This greatly restricts the actual visualization of the incident requiring a careful cross referencing of the details in order to understand it. We live in a three-dimensional world and the technology of creating images three dimensionally has been in existence and has been used since long before the turn of the century. Yet in law enforcement we often find ourselves trying to analyze it using two dimensional devices, photographs and sketches. By using various techniques we can make our eyes into believing that we are seeing three dimensions. Sometimes we can fool our eyes into performing comprehensive diagnostic analyses, making critical medical decisions, and formulating strategic military plans.     Extractions: Back in the 1950's, at the height of the Cold War, in America the movie industry was all agog at a "new" gimmick: the 3-D movie. Major films like Dial M for Murder The House of Wax , and Kiss Me Kate were shot in polarized "stereo," and Americans flocked to the latest in American technology. What did the Soviets do in reply? Nothing. You see, the Soviets had been making 3-D movies since the 1920's! It was all old hat here in St. Petersburg. In the U.S., the interest in 3-D fizzled and died by the 1960's, but here in Russia, it went slowly and quietly on. Because of this, you can occasionally find screw on attachments for the Zenit camera to convert it to a 3-D camera. If you special order from the film shop above Agfa, you can get a FED Stereo camera, which in 3-D photography circles is considered to be not only better than the Japanese Nishika 3-D, but the best stereo camera ever. In keeping with the continued Russian interest in 3-D, St. Petersburg even has it's own 3-D movie theatre, the Stereokino, right on Nevsky Prospect, opposite the Nevsky Palace Hotel. The Stereokino also shows "flatties" (regular un-3-D films), mainly pirated American B-movies. On one occasion I even saw a film there that was not only projected from an out-of-focus video projector, but had "FOR SCREENING PURPOSES ONLY" in big red letters on the bottom edge of the picture in the key scenes! However, every so often, the Stereokino comes to full flower when they actually get hold of a real 3-D movie. These range from American porno films (the only 3-D movies of note made in America after the 50's were porno flicks), Japanese action-adventure cartoons, and Russian family features.
