Thanks to the Historic Staunton Foundation, you are able to click on twenty-two houses and buildings in 1857 Staunton and see them in close-up photographs. You may also read about the buildings and their histories in greater detail, or see the ad for the original lithograph The two images below are representations of the same spot: Rockfish Gap, in Augusta County. The image of the left was painted by the same artist as the Staunton lithograph above, in 1856-57. The version on the left has been electronically generated from topographical maps. Such a map will be able to be rotated so that features can be seen from different angles. This manipulability will be useful both for showing the distribution of people and institutions on the landscape and for a more dynamic understanding of battles. The images of Rockfish Gap and Staunton were painted by a German artist, Edward Beyer. They are only two of approximately thirty plates that Beyer included in his Album of Virginia . The region chose to remain in the Union and form a new state. West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. The state motto is "Mountaineers are always free", and West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the "Mountain State". With an average altitude of 1,500 feet above sea level, it's the highest of any state east of the Mississippi River. For a long time, West Virginia was a leading producer of coal in North America, but many people left to pursue better employment opportunities. That trend has turned around, and now the state's economy is in a more stable condition. West Virginia, in the Appalachian Highlands, has some of the most rugged land in the United States. The state has very few large areas of level ground, except for strips of valley land that lie along the larger rivers. Forests of valuable hardwood trees grow on the mountain slopes and vast mineral deposits lie under the ground. Beautiful scenery, mineral springs and a variety of wildlife attracts tourists, campers, hunters and fishing enthusiasts.

Extractions: PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY Physical Features Virginia (which lies between the extremes of latitude 36'32' and 39'27' N and longitude 75'15' and 83-41' W) before 1851 recognized officially, for statistical purposes, four "grand divisions": Tidewater, Piedmont, Valley, and TransAllegheny. Since the loss of West Virginia only southwestern Virginia remains of the last division. Geographical differences in these divisions have profoundly influenced Virginia's life and history. Tidewater - Tidewater is a level plain of alluvial soil lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Fall Line (q.v.), the latter a distinct break in the crystalline rock formation of Piedmont, a line where waterfalls furnish power for mills and act as a barrier to advancing tides. Running southwestwardly across Tidewater are four great rivers-the lower Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James, the lower reaches of which form estuaries of Chesapeake Bay into which they empty. At the Fall Line, which runs north and south, cities-Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Petersburg-arose about trading posts at the bead of navigation and on the mill sites at the falls. Piedmont - Piedmont, the largest of the geographical provinces, lies between the Fall Line and the Blue Ridge Mountains (q.v.), extending in width 40 mi. (64 km.) at the north and 185 mi. (298 km.) along the southern border. It is a relatively low, rolling plateau region cut by many streams.

But how do you split - or lump - the pieces together? Does "Southwest Virginia" start at Roanoke, or Bristol? Do the suburbs of Richmond include Goochland? Is Fredericksburg in Northern Virginia? Jim Fonseca, when he was a geography professor at George Mason University, before becoming Dean of the Ohio University-Zanesville campus, ended up with 9 regions that seemed to "fit together." Here's how he saw it after years of studying Virginia, in an article published in the Virginia Geographer (Fall-Winter, 1990 issue): The human geography of contemporary Virginia is the product of complex interaction between the state's physical environment and its human population. The diverse physiographic regions of the statethe Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Appalachian Plateauare important influences, but they are not the only factors explaining regional population distribution and economic activity in the Commonwealth. One of the more critical factors influencing Virginia's geography is the location of the state in reference to larger multistate regions, such as Megalopolis, Appalachia, and the Piedmont Manufacturing Belt. The boundaries of these regions are seldom sharply demarcated, either on the national or the Virginia landscape. However, a useful approximation of their spatial extent in Virginia can be obtained by analyzing the state's physical geography in terms of social and economic data for nine contemporary regions that are based on the boundaries of the state's

These topographic map exercises are intended to serve as an introduction to topographical maps and to the physical and cultural geography of Virginia.
