It is believed ancestors of the Amerindians inhabited the Yukon 10 000 to 25 000 years ago when they migrated from Asia across a Bering Sea land bridge. The first modern European visitors were Russian traders in the 18th century. Sir John Franklin anchored off the Yukon's Arctic coastline in 1825, and the Hudson's Bay Company moved into the interior in the 1840s using maps and information from Franklin and other early explorers. The Hudson's Bay Company first used the name Yukon in 1846. They named it "Yucon," from the Loucheux Indian word "Yuchoo," meaning the greatest river. U.S. traders arrived after the 1867 Russian sale of Alaska to the United States. Historically, the Yukon is associated with the great Klondike Gold Rush. On August 17, 1896 George Carmack discovered gold on Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River. This discovery marked the beginning of what is often considered the world's greatest gold rush. After centuries of quiet habitation indigenous peoples found their lands inundated as gold prospectors pushed northwards from northern British Columbia or moved inland from the Bering Sea. Miners also traveled up the Yukon River by sternwheeler. The town, then city, of Dawson, at the junction of the Klondike and Yukon rivers, and named after the chief Canadian surveyor, came into existence to serve the great gold rush influx.

Extractions: History CYFN Today Culture and Language Until 1993, Yukon Indians never signed a treaty with the Government of Canada. In 1967, Indian leader and activist Elijah Smith began organizing "We must have, both the right to be different, and the right to be accepted as fellow citizens and as fellow humans. Most of the time Whiteman have insisted that we become instant Whiteman. This was never possible." Yukon Indians in order to present their case for a claims settlement to Canada. In 1970 Smith organized the Yukon Native Brotherhood, representing twelve Yukon Indian bands. In January 1973 YNB held a special five-day meeting attended by 110 representatives from the twelve Yukon Indian Bands. At this meeting Yukon Indian leaders finalized Together Today Together Today Tomorrow , a statement of grievances and a claim against the Canadian government. It was presented to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in February 1973. Extractions: History of the Yukon Quest Yukon Quest Information Summary The Yukon Quest began as a shared dream of musher LeRoy Shank and non-musher and historian Roger Williams. They dedicated their vision to the gold seekers, mail carriers, trappers and the traders who settled the great North during the turn of the century. This international sled dog race began in 1984 with 27 teams, covering 1,000 miles / 1,600 km of rough and sometime hazardous terrain between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska. This event takes place each year in mid February at a time when the weather can be unpredictably cold. The starting point alternates between the two cities; even years from Fairbanks and odd years from Whitehorse. The race starts on schedule regardless of weather and will take from 11 to 14 days to complete, depending on weather conditions encountered on the trail. Only the race Marshall or Judges can change the starting place and time. The race becomes more popular internationally each year. The Yukon Quest will begin in Whitehorse, Yukon on February 8, 1998. The Quest allows no more than 50 entrants and the $100,000 (U.S. ) is divided among the first 20 finishing teams. The race winner will take home $25,000. Drivers ( mushers ) must be at least 18 years of age and start the race with no less than 8 dogs and no more than 14. Drivers must finish the race with no less than 8 dogs. Dogs may not be added to the team after the start of the race.
