Extractions: At A Glance HISTORY Yukon First Nations elders and people have many stories and legends about the creation of earth and the first human inhabitants. These stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and are an important part of the Yukon First Nations culture. Along with these stories, archaeologists theorize that the first people crossed a land bridge from Asia to northern Canada during the Pleistocene Ice Age between 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. This link between continents was estimated to be 2,400 kilometres wide. The growth of glaciers lowered sea levels and exposed portions of continental shelves which created this broad land bridge. Parts of northern Alaska and Yukon remained ice-free during the last ice age and provided a haven for many animals and humans fleeing from colder regions. Archaeologists suggest early inhabitants of the Yukon hunted woolly mammoths, bison, horses and caribou. They lived in small family groups which travelled with the animals. The earliest evidence of human activity was found in caves on the Bluefish River near Old Crow in northern Yukon. Stone tools and animal bones found at this site were estimated to be 20,000 years old.

Extractions: After immigrating to Canada and travelling throughout North America, Frank found himself heading far North. He began working at a silver mine in Keno Hill during the early 60's, where he was eventually promoted to Operations Manager. Years of hard work later, he saved enough money to go out on his own. Following some research, Frank decided to start a placer mine in a remote area of Northern Yukon called Highet Creek. He chose this location based on its history it was an area that already had been prospected for gold by miners during the Klondike. Over time, Frank expanded his operation by building a fleet of heavy machinery, and staking another series of claims near scenic Minto Lake. The decades that followed saw many mining operations come and go, but Frank remained a constant presence, forging ahead and establishing himself as one of the few expert pioneers of the ancient craft of gold mining.

Extractions: In this Web page, we trace the evolution of the Chamber from its start in 1912, when it had to go hat in hand to government to obtain operating capital, to the respected position it occupies today. Credit is extended to Thomas Elliot who served as the Chamber's manager from 1955 to 1975 and who compiled the information this chronology is based on. At the first annual meeting on October 29, 1913, when L.W. Shatford was elected president, the financial statement showed total receipts of $4,096.65 and expenditures of $5,581.66. The Chamber fortunately survived these early, difficult financial years. Early in 1922 the signing of a five year lease in a building located at 438 West Pender Street signalled that better financial times had arrived. During this period and in later years financial aid was provided by both the City of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia. The province still provides a grant largely in recognition of the educational role played by the Chamber.

Extractions: current motorcycle plate How it all began... Even though Yukon is in the remote North, vehicle registrations were set up suprisingly early. This is probably due to the gold-rush (the Klondike ) which started at the end of the 19th century. The Yukon was settled by many, who came to seek their fortune in gold. Dawson City was supposedly the largest city west of Winnipeg at one point! Today, much of this boom has gone bust, as many of these "get rich quick" overnight operations folded. As a result, there are a lot of isolated ghost towns not connected by any modern routes. The Yukon first started registration in 1914, using flat tin plates which displayed the year of issue rather than the year of expiry . The plates were handpainted using a stencil on flat tin and probably all done by the same signpainter. They were intended to be permanent until replaced by the annual embossed license plates provided by the territory starting in 1924. All these early plates carried "YT" for Yukon Territory. An interesting design came out in 1952 with the miner "Yukon Sam" panning for gold, complete with a gold nugget in the pan! This wasn't real gold, of course, but rather a dab of gold paint, applied by hand. The "Land of the Midnight Sun" has provided us with a colorful license plate history as you can see on the far left. The tri-color styles (where the miner is of a different color from the numbers) are very popular with collectors.

Mining has continued to be the cornerstone of the Yukon economy from the famous Klondike gold rush of 1896/98 to the present day, although the territory has experienced several "boom-and-bust" cycles as metal prices have risen and fallen over the years. The first reported exploitation of metals in Yukon pre-dates European settlement. The aboriginal people are known to have mined native copper nuggets in the White River area of southwest Yukon to fashion arrowheads and to trade. Prospecting for placer gold by white settlers began soon after the first reported discovery at Fortymile in 1850.

Extractions: Seven "C" (10 Hp stock) class tubs entered the race with five finishing the entire race. The fastest tub was rookie pilot Dave Fowler from Robinson Marine in Chilliwack BC, whose time of 14 hours, 33 minutes was enough to beat another rookie, Whitehorse tubber Tom Eschak. They were followed in by Bill Bloor, Mike Murphy, and Ted Sandor in his silver stealth tub. Whitehorse's Warren Isaac blew his engine short of Carmacks and rookie tubber Collin Varga had to be towed from rough weather on Lake Laberge. Nineteen year old Collin, who built his own tub from scratch, did complete the second leg of the race from Minto into Dawson City and was awarded this year's Red Lantern and a pair of red underwear by the Kapital Kickers. The annual awards ceremony at the Downtown Hotel provided the tubbers an opportunity to thank their supporters and to relate the high and low points of the race. Rookie Tom Eschak had to maneuver around a swimming black bear in a narrow channel. Bill Bloor was awarded the "Best Splash" award including water wings, a snorkel and a bent propeller for his many entries into the water, sometimes after being nudged by his supporting jet boat. Bob Robinson of Chilliwack's Robinson Marine was a close runner-up after he strode off his jet boat into what he thought was two feet of water. Teammates related that all they could see for several seconds was his hat.
