Because of the very small population licensing was confined to a few settlements with certain discretionary authority held by the Commissioner in more remote areas. Six liquor stores and central warehousing facilities in Whitehorse, now service the requirements of more than three hundred licenses as well as permit holders, and the general public. The Corporation operates under the mandate that it shall regulate the purchase, import, storage, distribution, and sale of all alcoholic beverages within the Yukon, under the requirements of the Liquor Act and Regulations. It also provides that the Corporation conducts its business in a socially responsible manner. It is this commitment to social responsibility that has moved the Corporation to a position where it not only offers low and non-alcoholic alternatives but assumes pa rtial responsibility for the education of purchasers and consumers with reference to the moral and legal obligations associated with alcohol service and consumption.

    Extractions: Yukon College About Yukon College History of Yukon College Yukon College has its roots in the Yukon Vocational and Technical Training Centre (YVTTC), a creation of the territorial government in the early 1960s. Over the years it served the people of the territory well, even (in 1977) arranging with UBC to offer university-level programs and courses. Public demand, however, for greater locally available post-secondary opportunities only increased. As a result, the YVTTC and the UBC programs were merged and Yukon College was officially born on March 23, 1983, replacing the YVTTC, and taking over its buildings and facilities. In June 1988, the College moved its Whitehorse campus to its new facility at Yukon Place in the Takhini subdivision. Located on a bluff overlooking the river valley, the College commands a spectacular view of the river and the mountains to the east of the city. The new campus was officially opened with a potlatch in October 1988, at which the College was given to the people of the Yukon. First Nations people of the territory were represented by Mrs. Angela Sidney and Mr. George Dawson. Mrs. Sidney, whose mother tongue was Tagish, was asked to give the College an Indian name. She began by describing how her father's people had built a killer whale house on the banks of a river, and then had to move it when they discovered that the house was too close to the river bank. Observing the similarity between the killer whale house and the main campus, she named the College

The membership of YEU is spread throughout the Yukon from the most northerly (Herschel Island) near the Northwest Territories border to Beaver Creek, a point 350 miles west of Los Angeles, California. The Yukon Employees Union is one of the youngest members of the National Board of Directors. Our founding convention was held in June 1990. However, we have been members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada since 1966. The first 20 years of our existence was as a unique "Local" entity within the Alliance structure. The first full-time President was elected in 1987. A term negotiated in the collective agreement with Yukon Territory Government allows the President to be on a 75 per cent paid leave of absence. All other executive members are elected volunteers coming from any of the Locals represented. The Component Executive consists of the full-time President, two Vice-Presidents, a Secretary, a Treasurer and six Directors. The Executive is the governing body of the Component between conventions and meets on a monthly basis to discuss and implement programs and policies to support its membership. The Component's Triennial Convention in February 2000, elected an Executive who will serve the members till the fall of 2002.

    Extractions: Several practice games were held before the first official league game was played on Sunday, May 27 th . The Midnight Sun Pipe Band entertained the crowd before the ceremonies and Commissioner Gordon Cameron performed the official kick-off at 2:00pm. The opening game was between 918 Construction and Howard Firth Insurance (Firth Canucks), and was refereed by Derek Irons from the Royal Canadian Air Force. The first season proved to be a great success, with an excellent brand of soccer being played and as many as 200 spectators watching the games. It was not without it’s problems, however. The field at Selkirk was gravel and hard on the knees and elbows when the going got rough, the ethnic rivalries caused problems for the two officials, Derek "Dawson Festival" Irons and Norm "I-bin-robbed" Chamberlist. Negotiations with the Territorial Government secured a better piece of land at F.H. Collins school and the league discipline committee banned ethnic teams. In 1964, under the presidency of Norm Chamberlist, the first Disciplinary Committee was formed, made up of Bert Whybrew, President of the Senior Hockey League, Gerry Ball, President of the Baseball League, and Norm. Having people from outside the soccer fraternity made it easier to shift the blame for decisions made by the committee. Discipline was often a problem with the many ethnic groups from Europe playing, and on one occasion, Norm sent off John Gerencer (nicknamed Coca-Cola), but failed to notice that he did not get off the field. John ended up remaining on the field through to the end of the game.

From the Chuchi of Magadan, Siberia, to the Inuit of Canada's Arctic, northern peoples have travelled by dog sled for hundreds of years. Indeed, one of Frank's highlights of his mushing career was the 1991 Hope Race, which ran from Nome, Alaska, to the Chukotka region of Siberia, over 1200 miles. Frank is the only Canadian to have participated in the Hope race. The country he travelled through, the wonderful Chuchi mushers, and the warm hospitality of villagers along the Siberian coast, all left a really powerful impression on him. In Siberia, indigenous peoples still rely on dog teams for their travel and survival. They must travel through extreme weather conditions very severe cold and high coastal winds so they wear double skin parkas and pants like the ones in the picture to the right. When you visit our kennel, you can see this traditional hand-made caribou outfit worn by Chuchi mushers.

    Extractions: In June 1843 Robert Campbell, Hudson's Bay Co. trader, made his first trip down the Pelly River to the Yukon. He travelled with Hoole, the interpreter, Lapie and Kitza the hunters. The trip was successful and was the first of many. His life is chronicled in the book, "Campbell of the Yukon." George Dawson George Dawson, of the Canadian Geological Survey, mapped the Pelly River in August 1887. He had led a party from Wrangell, Alaska, up the Stikine River, down the Dease River, up the Liard River to Finlayson Lake and overland from there to the Pelly River. There they built a canvas covered canoe and travelled back to the Pacific at Skagway, by way of the Yukon River. His report on the area encouraged later prospectors. Charles Sheldon Charles Sheldon, the American hunter-naturalist, hunted Stone sheep in the Pelly area in 1905. His collection of skins and skulls was sent to the museum in Washington, D.C. He met Del Van Gorda, Oliver Rose and Jim Grew while he was in this area. Danger Creek is named for his packhorse. His book , "The Wilderness of the Upper Yukon" made the area famous among the world's big game hunters.

    Extractions: History of Wood Bison In North America Map: Prehistoric and Historic Bison Distribution Bison are not "exotics" but have inhabited the Yukon for perhaps as long as 700,000 years. The Wood bison as a distinct subspecies evolved about 5,000 years ago in the Beringia Refugium - the ice-free area extending from central Yukon westward across Alaska, via the exposed Bering land bridge, into eastern Siberia. During and after the ice age they were one of the most common large grazing animals in the area. However, climatic changes in the following millennia brought about a decline in the extent of cold steppe with the accompanying invasion of spruce forests. Bison habitat shrank and bison numbers declined. It is estimated that around the year 1800 there were about 160,000 Wood bison in North America. With the initiation of the fur trade and the introduction of firearms in the latter part of the last century, bison numbers declined rapidly; they became almost extinct with only 200 to 300 left by the 20th century. Early this century, Wood bison conservation measures, such as the establishment of Wood Buffalo National Park, brought about a slow recovery of the Wood bison herd, with numbers climbing from 500 to 2,000 in the 1920s.
