Extractions: The Histology course was developed for students entering the health professions. The course offers an introduction to the light microscopic structure of tissues and organs. Each topic corresponds to scheduled lectures and laboratory sessions. There are 23 lessons in all. When entering each lesson the students is given information about the lesson. Beginning students are encouraged to go through each Lab Intro sequentially. The left side of the screen contains a description of the image displayed on the right. Words in red describe certain structures on the image. Words in blue boxes further describe a particular structure for the advanced learner. Words in dark blue highlight structure-function correlates and selected histopathology which are included in many lessons in order to emphasize normal structure and function. From the text screen the student can view the image displayed in a magnified view. This view also offers a movable scrolling text field so that you can view the enlarged image and compare the text to the image. Intermediate and advanced level students can use a directory to randomly jump to particular text/image combinations

Extractions: Return to the histotechnology menu. There are a variety of mucin stains, all attempting to demonstrate one or more types of mucopolysaccharide substances in tissues. The types of mucopolysaccharides are as follows: Neutral - These can be found in glands of the GI tract and in prostate. They stain with PAS but not with Alcian blue, colloidal iron, mucicarmine, or metachromatic dyes. Acid (simple, or non-sulfated) - Are the typical mucins of epithelial cells containing sialic acid. They stain with PAS, Alcin blue at pH 2.5, colloidal iron, and metachromatic dyes. They resist hyaluronidase digestion. Acid (simple, mesenchymal) - These contain hyaluronic acid and are found in tissue stroma. They do not stain with PAS, but do stain with Alcian blue at pH 2.5, colloidal iron, and metachromatic dyes. They digest with hyaluronic acid. They can be found in sarcomas. Acid (complex, or sulfated, epithelial) - These are found in adenocarcinomas. PAS is usually positive. Alcian blue is positive at pH 1, and colloidal iron, mucicarmine, and metachromatic stains are also positive. They resist digestion with hyaluronidase. Acid (complex, connective tissue) - Found in tissue stroma, cartilage, and bone and include substances such as chondroitin sulfate or keratan sulfate. They are PAS negative but do stain selectively with Alcian blue at pH 0.5.

Extractions: The past century has witnessed a breathtaking array of discoveries in the biological sciences, in particular in the general area of molecular biology, the scientific discipline that seeks to fully understand the molecular basis of heredity, genetic variation, and the expression patterns of individual units of heredity called genes. (Please see our brief primer on molecular biology ) Newspaper articles and media reports today routinely discuss advances in "gene therapy" and "transgenics", procedures which would have been unimaginable even a generation ago. Many people view genetic engineering as a relatively new field of scientific pursuit, but in fact the techniques that are in use today are the result of a series of landmark discoveries that were made over a period spanning more than 125 years. This article presents a timeline of key discoveries that have culminated in the human genome project, an international effort to decipher the sequence of the 3 billion base pair subunits of DNA which reside in the chromosomes of human beings. Mendel published the results of cross breeding experiments he had conducted on the garden pea Pisum sativum . By noting the appearance or disappearance of traits, such as pod and flower color, over several generations Mendel was able to postulate a generalized set of rules governing inheritance. He proposed that there are discrete units of heredity (which today we call genes) which are transmitted from generation to generation, even though some of these units are not necessarily expressed as an observable trait in every generation.
