On 7 March, representatives of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) sought to answer that question at an unusual workshop for potential grantees gathered here at the institute's home base. In focus. A new genomics initiative aims to make sense of millions of DNA bases, like those shown here in an array. CREDIT: NIH In late February, NHGRI released a call for applications for its newest genome project, the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements, or ENCODE. Now that the sequence's 3 billion letters have been spelled out, the next goal is to locate and identify the meaningful portions. This includes determining which DNA codes for proteins and which doesn't as well as pinpointing elements that mediate gene expression. NHGRI took the unusual step of inviting interested applicants to ask questions and offer feedback, helping shape the project. The institute has earmarked at least $36 million to ENCODE over the next 3 years. Most of the money will be parceled out among five to 15 groups, which all told will identify the functional elements in 1% of the genome. When finished, the teams will compare notes to determine which technologies proved most efficient and accurate. NHGRI envisions then scaling up the project to annotate the other 99% of the genome.

Organized by the Henry Art Gallery, Gene(sis) seeks to bridge art and science by elucidating technical advances for a lay audience and examining ethical issues raised by genomic research. Recognizing the complexity that these new opportunities present, curator Robin Held developed the exhibition during three years of on-going dialogue with geneticists, artists, science historians, medical ethicists, and art historians. In the spirit of fostering dialogue across disciplines, an extensive array of public programming is slated at each tour venue in conjunction with the exhibition. In describing the research, Regush comments, "If science hopes to unlock the mystery of how chronic diseases occur, it seems likely that the emphasis will have to be placed on better understanding how viruses might help to orchestrate changes in the body's genetic programs." "'The Virus Within' does an excellent job of explaining our recent genetics work," said Dr. Howard Urnovitz of Chronix Biomedical. "We are beginning to unravel the mystery of how the environment around us acts upon the environment within us through a process of gene reshuffling." Urnovitz testified last month to the Congressional Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans' Affairs and International Relations on gene reshuffling and chronic diseases.

Extractions: than human genomics But although the Human Genome Project grabs headlines, perhaps the bigger story in biology will be in plant and animal genomics: the first benefits to society are likely to come from these areas, where it is generally easier and less controversial to utilize genetic information, according to Randy Woodson , director of Purdue University's Office of Agricultural Research Programs "Agricultural genomics is well behind human genomics," he says "But we can adapt the tools used in the Human Genome Project to find solutions for problems in food much faster than drugs for human problems can be brought to the market." Genomics uses automated laboratory equipment and high-power computers to identify all of the genes in an organism. These genetic road maps can be used to create genetically modified organisms, such as Bt corn. Genetic information also can provide an advantage to traditional crop and animals breeders that was unthinkable 10 years ago. "Genomics is much, much more than biotechnology," Woodson says. "Understanding the genome of a crop or animal doesn't always mean we'll modify the organism's genes. Once we know what every gene in an organism does, following a trait through a traditional breeding program becomes much, much easier. If you're wanting to increase disease resistance in plants or animals, for example, you don't have to grow the plants or animals to maturity and subject them to years of testing to see if the trait is there. You can look at their DNA and know whether it's there or not."
