4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you learn well with humor
An excellent book to review microbiology as well as antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals. The illustrations are great and some are quite humorous. This text book would also make a good supplement for learning microbiology during normal course work.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Very well, fun and easy explained concepts. Anyone who is taking micro i highly recomend to buy. It is better than the texbooks which teachers recomend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic intro to Micro
This book gives a good, quick overview of the basic principles and key issues of micro and serves as a good BRS-type review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good review
This book is a really good review of microbiology. It doesn't read like a typical (somewhat boring) medical text.It has a lot of goofy pictures and mnemonics to help you remember things. It's style might turn some off, but it was helpful for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars best microbiology text ever
This book is very thorough covering the bacteria, fungi, worms, and viruses as well as pharmacology. So it is like a micro book and pharm book in one. On top of that, this book has amazing illustrations that are funny to help you remember the key concepts of micro. If you are a Medical, Dental, or Grad student taking micro I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book! ... Read more

I have never had a problem with Amazon overseas until now. This book was shipped on 2 January and received 6 February. This does not make me stray from Amazon. I am just disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Delivery
I received this text book in a very timely manner, in the wrapper, and paid a very fair price. The text is easy to read and had a very good primer on the biochem that is the basis for Microbiology.I would give a good rating to this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent office text
I purchased this text to help review for the FNP examination. It is an excellent resource--one that I frequently pull off the shelf to review.I would strongly recommend it for your medical library.

5-0 out of 5 stars I miss it
This was the required text for the microbiology class I took.I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it!And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book is easy to read for a science text and has pretty good descriptions and pictures. I'm using it for an Intro to MicroBio class and it suits me well. I was a little shocked that it did not come with a CD or an online website supplement, but I guess that helps keep costs down (A book like this for only $100 brand new is great).

5-0 out of 5 stars best book...ever
this is the best science book in the world, and i don't even like science. the book keeps me entertained and i love it. i love it so much i am not going to re-sell it after my class ends and save money. I would rather keep the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very hard class but the book is great a great source for learning
a lot of info but it is broken down into bonehead terms.....

5-0 out of 5 stars A solidly written and comprehensive life science text
Now in an updated and expanded seventh edition, Alcamo's Fundamentals Of Microbiology by Jeffrey C. Pommerville (Professor of Biology and Microbiology at Glendale Community College) is a solidly written and comprehensive life science text designed specifically for college students. Individual chapters address bacterial diseases of humans, physical and chemical means to control microorganisms, microbiology's relevance to key public health issues, and much more. The explicit and easy-to-follow text offers a thorough and in-dept indoctrination into this vital body of scientific knowledge. A superb reference or instructional text especially for students (and also for professionals or even non-specialist general readers seeking to brush up their understanding), Alcamo's Fundamentals Of Microbiology is a vital and welcome contribution to Biological Studies reference shelves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good study guide for microbiology students
I thought this book was a good source for summarizing microbiology subjects like telling the difference between staphylococcus and streptococcus in a very understandable way. It gave good summaries and served as a good source for studying for my college microbiology exams.If you really want to know the type of questions given on college microbiology exams get the following;

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology text,It helped me.
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me.Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.

I also used a study guide "Microbiology Study Guide Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This book has awesome questions for studying during the semester and really gets you ready for the exams.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information....disorganized
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

4-0 out of 5 stars dr. black is my professor
she really knows what shes talking about and has designed the book to be easy to understand.unfortunately, you guys miss out on the stories that the editors wont allow her to put in that make things even more understandable. anyway, there is a lot of good and interesting information in here.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of typos and missing info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Images are great references.
The images are great for referencing the different cells charachteristics under a microscope. Convenient when you are studying somewhere besides lab.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I bought this as a first year medical student in hopes that it would simplify and better illustrate the complicated world of microbiology. In the end, it was a totally useless book. The pictures are average but really low yeild. If you are a med student trying to find pictures, I strongly reccomend you look elsewhere. If you are an undergrad and have tons of time on your hands, get it and waste a nice weekend or two. Otherwise stick to the assigned books. If you are a proffesor who has chosen this as an assigned book, shame on you!!!

the item I purchased wasn't complete, it was missing another lab book that was supposed to come with the atls. i have sent it back for my full refund.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have the lab manual, you don't need the atlas!
I highly recommend that you don't spend the extra money on the photographic atlas if you have purchased the lab manual (Laboratory Theory and Applications) by the same authors. There is nothing special about it and it has all the same pictures that are in the lab manual.....If you don't plan on getting the lab manual then it is very interesting and I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool
I'm new to Microbiolgy and didn't know where or how to start studying. My textbook was just too huge.I felt a little silly ordering a coloring book but it has become a great way for me to flesh out key concepts and become familiar with the vocabulary.

Each drawing comes with a detailed and easy to read description on the opposing page.Something about reading a paragraph and then coloring in the applicable section makes the information easy to understand.

It's also a great way to get a little quick studying done. Each picture can be colored and reviewed in about 15 minutes (although I take a little longer just to really absorb the material).

Thanks for the great book!I've already ordered the Physiology and Anatomy coloring books to use next semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I am currently in Microbiology and this book is very helpful with its layout.I am a visual learner and this book has exceeded my expectations so far.The only complaint/comment I have is that the pictures are very small and compact therefore making it hard to color with anything other than colored pencils.I would have liked crayon as they have better colors but beggers can't be choosers.Great book overall!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Paper is too thin, colors bleed through, otherwise it is terrific
I took microbiology and anatomy at the same time.I used coloring books in both classes and they were a big help. The only complaint I have about the microbiology book is that the paper is thin, lighter than the paper stock used in the anatomy coloring book.I placed a paper between the pages so the markers didn't bleed onto the next plate, but you could see the colors through the page and sometimes it was distracting trying to read the information on the page. I tried coloring with pencils and it worked out fine, it just takes longer to use pencils as opposed to markers.

I highly recommend the book if you are a visual and tactile learner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoruough
The best thing about coloring books is that they are a form of entertainment while being a tool for learning. That is my experience with this book.Enjoyable, thorough, and money well spent

3-0 out of 5 stars Shipping Info Not Accurate
The item was correct & came in good condition, but DON'T believe Amazon's shipping info. Instead of picking the free shipping this product was eligible for (which said could take anywhere from 3-14 business days, I paid for Standard Shipping (since Amazon said it took 3-5 business days). By the 6th business day I STILL hadn't received the book & called customer service where they basically said even though their shipping policy clearly states 3-5 business days that that is not always when you get it?!? I received my book on the 12th business day! Had I known their shipping info was basically a lie, I would have paid for Express or Overnight shipping. So if you need a product by a certain day, don't count on Amazon's shipping policies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology book
This book is very helpful in breaking down the necessary tests, etc. Easy to read charts and format. One of the better Micro books I've seen lately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy little med student...
This book is a great resource book for any medical student to have on their shelves.I agree with many of the other comments that it is not an easy book. This more because of the massive extent of information, not the method of writing.Overall it's easy to read, which is why I refer to it as my reference book. I did rather well in my micro class using mostly class notes and Medical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple mostly because the typical medical student just doesn't have enough time to thoroughly use this text. However, any time I had a question, this book could answer it.It saved me a lot of time tracking down the various professors to ask questions. It has great "green boxes" that summarize the virulence, epidemiology, disease, diagnosis, and treatment for each bacteria and virus.I definitely plan on using those for reviewing. The end of each unit (bacteria, virus, fungi, parasites) summarizes the role of that microbe in disease which is basically charts of differentials for pneumonia, diarrhea, ect..but very useful when transistioning to clinical thinking.

The companion question book was great too.The questions were typically harder than my exams (which I should note Dr. Rosenthal was my course coordinator so that was a nice surprise) but helped me discover gaps in my understanding.

I don't know if this is the best book but I certainly don't have any huge complaints. And I repeat, it's my reference book not my main study source.Definitely get Ridiculously Simple and First Aid...both have great memory tips for highly detailed subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward text, basic immunology required for understanding
For medical students the medical microbiology is often generalized as a subject full of detailed information and names of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites which ought to be memorized and written on an exam sheet at the end of the course. Unfortunately, complex texts with many parallels often cause confusion and strengthen the reinforced need to memorize as much details as possible. In some context, it reminds of the perception of the human anatomy.

A lot of things in medical microbiology are meant to be memorized but there is a way around which makes the student to get a core understanding of the subject. Hence, the beginner student needs sincere and concrete information prior to the course, which result in fast and effective studies.

To begin with, the text in this book requires a strong understanding of three crucial subjects: biochemistry, molecular cell biology and basic immunology. Without any of these three components, most parts of the book will seem nothing else but difficult information based on names and technically undefined principles. Therefore, before a student should start with this material the principles of basic immunology, based on cell-biological and biochemical mechanisms, shall be understood. Even if the book does not mention much pure biochemistry with exception of maybe different enzymes (e.g beta-lactamase) secreted by Staphylococcal Aureus bacteria to break down different types of penicillins and thus partly become resistant, without biochemistry and cell biology there is no chance that the student will understand the immunology part in the first place, making the entire subject resemble fuzzy concepts based on names only instead of natural science based on logical analysis.

Time constrains may give it a lower priority and the immunology part of this book is definitively not for students who have not yet been familiar with the subject. In fact, the chapter in immunology is more of a concise summary without any details making it very hard for the beginner to get any form of understanding and intuitive problem-solving skills.

Therefore, I would personally recommend the book Basic Immunology, Updated Edition 2006-2007: with STUDENT CONSULT Access before start any reading in medical microbiology. The book contains 263 pages with problems after each chapter, clearly written and fits the time constrain most students may experience during the course. Starting with this book the student will be guaranteed to get the most out of the microbiology courses and understand the crucial keys, principles and theoretical frameworks needed at the clinics and future research. If needed a student can always buy a more advanced book in immunology, but she needs to buy this book together with the microbiology materials.

With understanding of the above mentioned subjects, the chapters in Medical Microbiology 5th Ed will seem clearly written and much easier to read and comprehend. Often, the student may need to read the chapters over and over again to get an intuitive problem-solving skill, which occurs in any medical subject anyway like physiology, anatomy, and cell biology. The illustrations are quite simplified, but there is no need for details as the skills in biochemistry and cell biology already are in the back of her mind. Medical Microbiology 5th Ed is probably the best book for introductory microbiology building up the intuitive self-confidence and understanding needed during practice.

There are plenty of lists and summaries about CD markers, cytokines, virulence factors, microbe physiology, diagnosis and vaccines in every chapter but memorizing most of these details are often not needed to get an understanding. I would recommend memorizing them (if needed) after the student has a concrete understanding of medical microbiology and is capable of putting small details in the correct contexts and still find the process easy.

There is a strong need to attend live seminars where students and professors have a chance to discuss different topics. Otherwise, attending lectures can be a good opportunity to ask the questions which may naturally arise during the course.

My overall judgement of this book is 5/5, based on the text, illustrations and the understanding I achieved after three weeks of intensive reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book ...
I used this book for my undergrad class and luckily my med school also uses this.As well as my husband has a previous copy that he used in med school. The text is very thorough, although it was lacking in a basic classification of bacteria, that would have been nice.(Like a chart of all gram - on one side and all gram +).Just gave a previous edition to a physician for reference and he loves it! I used this book in conjunction with clinical micro made simple and I have to say, I love both these books. Diagrams are clear, sometimes some of the topics are a bit jumbled (like immunology). There aren't alot of images either so you may need to supplement. That shouldn't be a problem though. This text is better if you have a basics of micro already down, definitely a higher level micro book or grad book. I would recommend!

I purchased this book for my Microbiology class and it is very helpful. My teacher uses the same figures and tables as in the book, which are easily readable/understandable especially when you think of each process as steps. My advise is to buy the book if you need to and take advantage of the given website that is given to you in the beginning pages to test your knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this book for our infections & immunology block in medical school. I found it comprehensive enough to give me a good understanding of the subject, without going into too many details that I wouldn't have time to learn. It was an easy, almost effortless read. The fact that there is a certain amount of repetition (not enough to be bothersome, in my opinion) through the different chapters means that 1) I could understand a chapter without having read all the previous ones and 2) I memorized as I went, insead of spending hours doing it after reading. Generally, I found it to be very a very clear & efficient way to learn a subject that could otherwise have been a bit overwhelming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book
This book is an EXCELLENT review of Microbiology. Highly recommended for use with a Medical Microbiology course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Medical Micro Book!!!
For those who are sick of bullet-point powerpoint presentations and bulky books, finally a book that has all the stuff you NEED for the USMLE..

I have tried the BRS, Lippinocott's and other's; this one is THE book to get. It is a great way to review the concepts in a concise and compact way. Plus it has great charts in it; these are great for the quick reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good review for USMLE
I liked this book very much. It is a very good review of Microbiology and Immunology for USMLE.

The main section covers major bacteriology, virology and parasitology. At the end of each chapter, there is a brief section with 'PEARLS', most important information in the chapter in brief. Then there is a 40-page section with brief summaries of medically important organisms. There is a concise Immunology section. It is followed by clinical cases and USMLE type exam questions.

If you like to have most important information repeated more than once, then this is the book for you. I found a little problem with organization of information. In virology, there is a chapter with brief description of virus families. Most of that information is repeated in following chapters. In immunology section, I had to go back and forth between chapters. The chemotherapy section could cause some confusion if you also read Katzung & Trevors Pharmacology (Exam & Board Review). I don't know if you need all that information about the parasites not common in the US.

Overall, a very good review book for USMLE. ... Read more

This text is very helpful with its readable language and diagrams. It provides a sufficient review of basic biology and is written so that one could technically skip chapters and still understand the topics. The text's website and CD provide excellent review tests, flashcards, and animations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a good book
This book holds a lot of useful information from safety to bacteria. Some of the parasitology was lacking and all of the tables can be useful or a menace depending on how well you can learn from them. The pictures were very useful and everything is easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
The great pictures and tables in this book keep it interesting, the only bad thing about it is that there are no end-of-chapter reviews or questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is it really good?
The eleventh edition is good in many aspects. But it cannot be denied that it is not as good as Koneman's book. Bailey and Scott is more suitable only for the bench technicians and not for researchers and graduate students. The book churns out table after table, in the name of comparative analysis. A student's mind will have difficulty in memorising and reproducing tables in the exam. In that sense, the lucid style of presentation in Koneman is commendable. Probably, the author of B&S did not have 'the student' in their mind when they wrote it. Another grossly lacking area is Parasitology. When compared to books written by Indian authors like SC Parija and Chatterjea, Bailey and Scott lags far behind. Probably, it is because parasitic infections are less in the US, which is why this area has been under emphasised.
As a gradute student in India, I would strongly encourage my friends and fellow microbiologists to singularly follow Koneman alone. Trying to use Koneman with Bailey and Scott or trying to substitute Koneman with Bailey and Scott is an exercise in futility.
These are my personal views only. Perhaps, students who want tofinish studying clinical microbiology quickly because of the proximity of the exam dates, can go for Bailey and Scott. For MD students like me, we all in our college unanimously vote for the
    Koneman.
