4-0 out of 5 stars Makes micro funny and memorable
The slightly silly cartoons really are good about drawing your attention to what's important, and making it stick in your head.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars micro
this is a great review book that is full of stupid but incredibly memorable cartoons and tricks in the book.it's not completely comprehensive but is a great way to spend less time memorizing little details.without the chapters on antibiotics and antifungals i would have failed my micro exam!

5-0 out of 5 stars lifesaver
This book is awesome. It's saved my in micro. Totally worth it if your professor is as.. organized.. as mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is an excellent book for a high range of students whether you are first exposed to microbiology or have taken the course many times. It has great mnemonics and funny pictures.very easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty excellent, but please pay attention in class
I'm using this book for a class. It basically contains MOST of what you need to know about micro, and I imagine that it will be a more than adequate review when it comes time for Boards. However, if I used it as my only source of information (ie I didn't read the assigned text at all)I'd probably be in trouble when it came time for exams. It does not have EVERYTHING you need to know, and there's a good chance that your specific instructors want a great deal more detail than this book might cover. In addition, bear in mind that new things are being discovered about micro every year, and you need to keep an eye as to new developments and not assume that EVERYTHING in CMMRS is current.

My overall assessment?Buy or borrow this book, particularly if you are a visual learner or you remember things well through crazy mnemonics. It gives you an excellent foundational framework, and it is adorable and funny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book came just as expected.
Book arrived brand new at my apartment still in the plastic wrap. There were no surprises, and I am very pleased. Author is very thorough on the topics presented. Full color pages help for a better understanding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorley Organized, poorley written
User:medical student, allopathic USA school
Time of use:2 years

This book's presentation of microbiology is disorganized and often hard to follow. Particularly bad is the way each microbe family/viral family is laid out. There is little consistency from bug to bug...headers and sentences like the following are typical:

"Pathogenesis and Immunity:
Only the pathogenesis of rabies virus infection is discussed here"

The 'immunity' discussion is a sentence in a table on a following page...

This book would be an excellent book for an survey course in undergraduate micro. It is completely unacceptable at the professional level and in particular to the medical student, where it is important to absorb a great quantity of information in a little time.At my school I hear the professors constantly say "it is poor, but it is better than the alternative."

One would be better served to invest in Cecil's text of medicine.Though dense, at least the writing is such that one can skim quickly and learn the high points of each bug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a very good book for medicine students. I'm in the second year and has been very usefull. But this book dont justify changing your 5 edition on it. Almost all the chapters are equal, with just some boxes with clinical cases, and there is no answers to the questions of the end of the chapters, although the answers are clearly in the text, the old one, or at least the one that i saw in the library, had all the answers whith some complement to the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent!
I am in love with my book, is in excelent conditions. Really Amazon is a perfect way to have good quality in a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Micro 101
Book is a great help in my Micro class.I read it before class, along with the text book that I paid $189.00.It broke stuff down too.Its like listening to the Prof.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
This book is much more well organized than my textbook. The review questions and practice tests at the end of every chapter really help reinforce the material that is given. I've gained a more thorough understanding of the material we go over in class by using this book. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EXPLANATORY BOOK!
I used this book all the way through my semester of Microbiology. This book helped supplement my learning with my professor, peers, and tutoring. I would recommend this book to anyone. It was really helpful and explained things really well!

5-0 out of 5 stars ref book to prep for classes
This book is exactly what I was looking for to read over the summer to prep for fall classes and keep my mind fresh.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK - A must buy if you're taking Microbiology
I have to say that this book is a AMAZING. I'm using it as a supplement to my note from class and it is more understandable then my 1000+ paged textbook. Of course I skim through my textbook since this book doesn't have EVERYTHING, but the essentials are summarized quite nicely. I felt like I was actually learning something as I read it! Although I have yet to take my first test for Micro, I feel that whatever grade I get, it is (by God's grace of course) with the help of this book that the grade will probably be higher, rather than burdening myself with reading 7 chapters about microbes.

A great supplement and a must buy. I recommended it to my friend, too. :) ... Read more

Product Description

Books à la Carte are unbound, three-hole-punch versions of the textbook. This lower cost option is easy to transport and comes with same access code or media that would be packaged with the bound book.

This #1 selling non-majors microbiology textbook is praised for its straightforward presentation of complex topics, careful balance of concepts and applications, and proven art that teaches. In its Tenth Edition, Tortora/Funke/Case responds to the #1 challenge of the microbiology course: teaching a wide range of student levels, while still addressing student under-preparedness. The Tenth Edition meets students at their respective skill levels.

First, the book signals core microbiology content to students with the new and highly visual Foundation Figures that students need to understand before moving forward in a chapter. Second, the book gives students frequent opportunities for self-assessment with the new Check Your Understanding questions that correspond by number to the chapter Learning Objectives. Then, a new “visual learning” orientation includes: an increased number of the popular Diseases in Focus boxes, newly illustrated end-of-chapter Study Outlines that provide students with visual cues to remind them of chapter content, and new end-of-chapter Draw It questions. The all-new art program is contemporary without compromising Tortora/Funke/Case’s hallmark reputation for precision and clarity. Content revisions include substantially revised immunity chapters and an increased emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, bioterrorism, and biofilms.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst company ever! Don't buy!
So I decided to get the 9th edition instead of the 10th to save a hundred bucks... Wish I hadn't because I I'm waiting for the dam book to come in after I take my first week of classes and I'm still waiting. I ordered the books 2 weeks before classes and I ordered 3 other books, they all came in and I was forced to buy the book from school store so I don't fail any assignments. So guess what! IM STILL WAITING FOR THE BOOK! they stole my money and didn't send the book, I reported it to amazon and they said they can't do anything about it because they are an outside company, not technically amazon, so take my advice and don't give these people your money, they will steal it and not give you anything in return, Imma give the better business bureau a call see if they can do something about this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have done without
This book is also required by my college for this course. It has some helpful tidbits but after reading 2 other sperate sources to make a "complete" picture you dont have the engery to color the pictures.I honestly think I could have done without this book and saved some money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Learning Resource!
This book is about as good as it gets for basic study materials.Even if you don't want to spend time meticulously coloring it, the book gives an excellent overview of basic microbiology. If you are visual learner---this book is a MUST.The book comes complete with a helpful coloring guide and each section includes text explaining the illustrations. The text is clearly written and the authors are extremely well qualified, hailing from the UCSF medical illustration program.UCSF may very well be one of the top medical education programs in the world.(and this level of quality shows in the book!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent visual study aid
This book will help with your microbiology class, visual aids ar extremely helpful in the learning process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Coloring Book
Excellent book! Superb condition and prompt shipment.
The book far exceeded my expectation. A+

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool
I'm new to Microbiolgy and didn't know where or how to start studying. My textbook was just too huge.I felt a little silly ordering a coloring book but it has become a great way for me to flesh out key concepts and become familiar with the vocabulary.

Each drawing comes with a detailed and easy to read description on the opposing page.Something about reading a paragraph and then coloring in the applicable section makes the information easy to understand.

It's also a great way to get a little quick studying done. Each picture can be colored and reviewed in about 15 minutes (although I take a little longer just to really absorb the material).

Thanks for the great book!I've already ordered the Physiology and Anatomy coloring books to use next semester.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for a 200- level course
I used this book in the 200-level microbiology course I taught last year and will use it again this year. It has wonderful figures and great instructor resources. There are a few errors in the text, for example the glossary gives the definition of an auxotroph to be that of an autotroph, and the autotroph definition is that of the auxotroph. This confused my students.

It's a great book for a nursing/ non-majors microbiology course. I would stick with Brock's Biology of Microorganisms for a Biology Majors course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet sweet Micro
If you have to buy it for class, thena review is not too helpful. The seller was cheap enough and the book arrived about a week after ordered

5-0 out of 5 stars This Study Guide is a Grade-saver
I am taking an online Microbiology course that employs the textbook that this study guide supplements. Our professor is incredibly unhelpful when it comes to helping us decipher what material in the book is most important, and simply recommends that we should be extremely familiar with all of the material in the text. Before I bought this study guide, studying for my tests was like drinking from a fire hose:You are able to get a little bit of it in your mouth, but the majority of it just blows right by you because there is just too to much take to in at once. This study guide as saved my grade in this class. It has helped me to sort out the material in the text, and presents the information in a way that can be understood. Also, the set-up of the study guide also helps in the areas where rote memorization is necessary.I would recommend this study guide to absolutely everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
book has a lot of info and this seller was quick on the sending it. great seller and great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars couldn't be more happy...
excellent condition and arrived right on time. will definitely use this seller in the future!?! :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Told one thing got another
The item said used very little highlighting minor wear. What I got was a book with the inside binding completed cracked and broken. Heavy highlighting in some areas. I would say use a different dealer. I would have given them zero stars but that was not an option. The only thing that went correctly was it was delivered on time. But keep in mind I dont think they know how to correctly write a description on the used books they are selling. I would never use them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another life saver!
I purchased this book as a "prep" for Microbiology for nursing school. I HIGHLY recommend it for all nursing/medical students!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok book. But didn't really help me.
The book itself is good.High quality and written pretty well.Just like all the other books in the Idoiots series. But it didn't really help me.Didn't go along with what my instructor taught. So I didn't really use it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Covers only 3 chapters of college Micro text books
Get Microbiology Demystified instead. This Idiot's guide only covered the first 3 chapters of my micro text book.Where as the Demystified book covered all chapters of my college text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Microbiology
This book really helps me comprehend the concepts that are so difficult to decipher in the text book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm out $16 for this book
Thought this would be a good supplement to my sophomore level Microbiology text, but so far, I have not used it at all. When I've needed a simpler explanation (an overview) of a particular subject, I've looked in the table of contents of the book and not found what I'm looking for.I've received much more use out of the "Essentials" book (~$7) that I bought at the same time.

The author of C.I.G. to Microbiology seems to have been more interested in being "cutesy" with the content rather than focusing on necessary information.I would not recommend this to anyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This book is a good reference sourse for the Microbiology course.I would definitely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars lpn
I expected more from this book, but i will see if it can help me.
is there a way i can sell it back to you??

3-0 out of 5 stars The books title is very appropriate
I have not read through it yet, but I usually rush into things and did not consider what this book was before I purchased it, its a small sized book (I thought it was a regular sized book when I purchased it) and its 243 pages. The title is correct, its only a quick review, its probably not good for studying, only getting the basics, probably good for people who don't study and need to do a cramming session before the test, do not buy this book expecting practice questions or in depth analysis.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
I'd imagine most microbiology courses for biology or science majors is going to require knowledge at a much higher level than what is on here. So maybe it would be good for a basic introductory course but for most it won't help and your time would be spent on better material.

5-0 out of 5 stars cliffs micro
I'm in a very fast paced micro class. Our class is only 5 weeks long and we get the same amount of info as a normal length term. This book is going to be a life saver!I'm so glad I got it.And spending the extra $1 to see it and print some pages out on line while waiting for it to come in was a huge help, too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great source!
This book helps you as a great source if you are taking a Microbiology class. It helps you study and learnd the mos important topics.Hoever, you must read your textbook, too, and class lectures. The only bad thing is that you have to look for the topic you want to read because it will not be in the same order as your textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars a Must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review for Microbiology!!
This review book is great! I used the same brand for anatomy and physiology and it helped me tremendously. This one is great too. And much more portable than my textbook! I can take it anywhere...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for undergraduate microbiology
I took a microbiology class in undergraduate and found this book quite thorough and well-organized no nonsense approach. It got right to the point, without the added wording of many textbooks.I also used the Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi which is on amazon.com.
I found the last book to be quite on the mark with the type of questions to know for the test. These two books really helped alleviate many surprise questions on my microbiology exams. My friend who took microbiology last year recommended these two books. He was right, these two books helped me get an A. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great transaction.
The book came in perfect condition wrapped in plastic and in a box with styrofoam fillers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skimpy on highlighting essential topics. Generous on graphic illustration
After progressing in reading, the reader will get used to the generosity of the authors in their constant, yet might be odd, attempts to illustrate the subject matter, specially, the extended review summaries at the end of the book. The book strength lies in standardizing the review methods of classification of microorganism, of drug stacks used in treatment, and of microscopic and culture morphology.

Despite the reasonable flow of thoughts in the paragraphs of each subject, the book lacks highlighting of names of diseases, organisms, and methods that are left hidden in the maze of words. Thus, the student reader has to struggle with underlining and highlighting the dense text. For example, a long paragraph on selective, bacterial culture media contains five media names typed as plain text. That would require thorough re-reading, while reviewing, in order to memorize the five media. Thus, the authors abandoned the very premise of the book, which is "to review", and left the reader with the burden of searching while reviewing.

The book lacks of adequate footnotes or paragraph notes in visible locations. As such, the book paragraphs are plain, dense, and burdensome. Though there are plenty of boxed highlighted concepts, and even funny cartoons, it appears that the authors dismissed the busy and somber mood of busy lifestyle of students and rather tended to the relaxed style of casual readers.

Although most of the graphic illustrations are useful and neat, there is a sense of naivety in making trivial illustrations that serve no higher cause than the obvious. For example, on modes of virus transmission, a figure shows placental, birth canal, and postpartum images of contact between the agent and fetus/baby. Nothing is gained from such simplistic graphing of the plain and obvious course of action. In displaying the microscopic slides and culture photos, the book wasted more space on the entitling of the medical illustrations than on making the slides and cultures large enough to be legible.

The book ventures into an odd and redundant way of describing bacterial classification using colored pie chart. The frequently repeated colored pie serves very little purpose compared to the space it occupied. Neither the portions of the pie correspond to any numeric value of the bacterial classes they represent, nor do the colors of the pie wedges serve any purpose other than decorating the book page. The same odd style of representation applies to the use of one-column tables that use multiple rows to compare two different types of organisms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good MCAT study guide
This book is a great review for microbiology on the MCAT.Clear explanations, with pictures and figures, as well as concise chapter summaries make this a helpful book for MCAT prep.I also used the Lippincott Biochem review and thought it was also very useful as a MCAT study aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology:Abreeze
Even before I began this course I was terrified.Just the word "Microbiology" terrified me.This textbook is wonderful. It is easy to understand and it makes the course material fun to learn.I would definitely recommend this textbook for any beginning Microbiology course.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment
This book is nearly worthless. Large parts of it are just lists of organisms and there are frequent grammatical errors, typos, misspellings. It's clear it was written in a rush. The blurb on the back says "lavishly illustrated" which is a lie. All the illustrations, of which there are few, are not even B&W photos but line drawings, and not even very good ones at that. For example, The very first two, meant to illustrate two different organisms, are hard to tell apart. Save your money and buy something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not enough detail
I bought this book to help with a Microbiology class I need for nursing. Some of the more important things we are doing in lab (staining and cultures) have little detail or are not mentioned at all.For example, they mention MacConkey agar but not the others that we are being tested on.Chemical metabolism has some details, but not enough about ATP production. This book has helped clarify some things, but I have not been able to use it to the extent that I would have hoped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Second Degree
I'm going back for a second degree after 21 years. This book is very easy to understand and will make my class a lot easier and enjoyable.Great seller, quick shipping.I would highly recommend.

I have to say for myself it is a very difficult read. This layout of this book is horrible.I am a in a MLT program and we were given this book as our textbook. The teacher that we have isn't the best either so I thought at least I have the book.Well I was wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for the micro lover
this book is great. very detailed, easy to understand, and great pictures and tables. the only problem...it quite heavy. but good science books often are..

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical text book for diagnostic microbiology
I really think this is a great book. I am a medical doctor who wants to finish her specialisation in virology, microbiology and environmental hygiene. This book really covers the practical techniques to identify different microorganisms. You finally understand which steps are taken, the flow-charts are excellent. I have not found a similar book in the German literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date micro for the MLT student
The hospital where my wife is doing MLT clinicals had this book. She was so impressed with it, she wanted one of her own. It is up-to-date with many color and B/W pictures of the most recent micro technologies and procedures. East to read and understand.

Item came quickly, questions were answered immediately by seller.Book is in perfect condition, couldn't be happier! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
The book is not that hard to understand, it's written a way for people who are not major in medical field can understand. My professors are two authors of the book (student @ UW), the book & lecture together should be very easy to understand compare with other books that i have read. Plus, not everyone are going to microbiology field so there is no expectation that the book supposes to tell you everythng about microbiology. Plus, a good book is a book that everyone can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars good

1-0 out of 5 stars Book lost
Paid $135.00 and never received book. PostOffice can't find it. Very sad, $135.00 is alot of money. Especially when I had to buy another one for $200.00. So, the book cost me $335.oo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brand New!
I purchased this book brand new from Amazon.com.It arrived on time along with my lab manual. The book is in mint condition. It is full of infomation on Microbiology. It has end-of-chapter reviews and coorelating websites along with case studies. It is a very "interactive" book, if you will.Full of vibrant photos and excellent detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, decent deal
Its a solid textbook. The graphics are up-to-date and well done, the "sidebar" information is pertinent and helps illustrate and explain the concepts in the text.Get the study guide, its helpful too.

Amazon saved me a pile of money over the campus bookstore (no sales tax either!), and this one arrived quickly thanks to me being a Prime member.

As text books go, this one is pretty decent to learn from (especially since we have no choice, only the professor does). It is much more oriented toward nursing/medical than general biology majors, and puts most of the data in a medical/healthcare context. So if you are straight-biology major and not headed to Med or Nursing, then you may want to see what else is out there.
