The son of Thomas Anthony Trollope, a lawyer, and of Frances Trollope, a prolific writer herself, Anthony Trollope was born in London in 1815. As a child, Trollope was not particularly happy. A major factor in this was his father insistence upon sending him and his two brothers - Thomas Adolphus and Henry - to public school, despite the fact that he lacked sufficient finances to support them properly. They were the brunt of much teasing on account of their poverty. Firstly, Trollope attended Harrow School, later transferring to Winchester. However, he showed little academic promise during his time at either and, unlike his two brothers who continued their studies at Oxford and Cambridge, he was unable to obtain the scholarships he would have needed to support himself through university. Shortly after leaving school Trollope moved to Brussels to teach, but he remained there only a short while as with his father's help he was able to obtain a position as a junior clerk at the Post Office in London, a job which gave him little satisfaction. However, he was given the chance to take a job with the Post Office in Ireland as an administrator, a post in which he exhibited considerable ability. At this point in his life, Trollope experienced for the first time not only success in his work, but also began his literary career.

The Barsetshire series and the six Palliser or `political' books were the first novel-sequences to be written in English. His works offer an unsurpassed portrait of the professional and landed classes of Victorian England. In his Autobiography (published posthumously in 1883) Trollope describes the self-discipline that enabled his prolific output: he would produce a given number of words per hour in the early morning, before work; he always wrote while travelling by rail or sea and as soon as he finished one novel, he began another. Am beliebtesten bei der zeitgenössischen Leserschaft waren Trollopes bekannteste Chronikromane, wie die so genannten Chroniken von Barsetshire (The Warden, 1855; Barchester Towers, 1857; Doctor Thorne, 1858; Framley Parsonage, 1861; The Small House at Allington, 1864; und The Last Chronicle of Barset, 1867). Schauplatz ist Barsetshire, eine malerische, vom Autor erfundene Landschaft. He is best known for his depictions of upper-class English life and satires of the political and religious establishment. Anthony Trollope was born in London. His father, a fellow of New College, Oxford, failed both as a lawyer and as a farmer. The family's poverty embarrased Trollope during his education at the prestigious schools of Harrow and Winchester, where sometimes his parents could not afford to pay their son's school fees. After financial troubles the family moved to Belgium, but returned to England when Anthony's father died. His mother, Frances Trollope (1780-1863), took her three youngest children to America to assist in the founding of a utopian community in New Harmony, Indiana. The venture failed and she travelled for fifteen months in America. In 1832, back in England, she published Domestic Manners of the Americans , which gained success, and she was able to support her family through her writing.
