Ammons was an extensively published poet distinguished with some of the greatest honors of our times, a classic poet in the truest sense. Archie Randolph Ammons authored almost thirty books of poetry, including 1993 National Book Award and Bobbitt National Prize winner Garbage. His A Coast of Trees was in 1981 the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. Sphere received the Bollingen Prize in 1974. Ammons first won the National Book Award in 1972 for Collected Poems 1951-1971. His honors were many including a Tanning Prize, Lannan and Book Critics Awards, the Robert Frost Medal, Ruth Lilly Prize, fellowships from Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations and Academy of Arts and

Extractions: 1 of the ballsiest things to occur in the published world of poetry was the release of a book length poem by the recently-deceased A.R. Ammons called Garbage . Its too easy to go where you know I can. That the same title would be apropos for his inevitable Collected Poems should, likewise, be obvious. But, Garbage won a National Book Award ...and meanwhile of rejoicing... But you quoted out of context! No, but a gaze at the poem under discussion (below) will confirm what Ive just said. ARA is also 1 of those artists who is known for 1 thing- he once typed a whole poem on an adding machines roll, letting the natural stricture govern the line length of the poem. Was this a breakthrough? Hardly. Gimmickry has always been a part of the arts.

Garbage Ammons, an acclaimed master of words, decides the best description for the form of a flock of birds is "in a single computer-formed net," an unusual simile. In fact, it doesn't even function literally. What is a computer-formed net? A net formed out of computers? That's slightly illogical. A net(work) of a group of computers? But does anyone know what that looks like? Is there an actual image to call to mind of an inter- or intranet? Born on a farm outside Whiteville, North Carolina, Archie Randolph Ammons was educated at Wake Forest College, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in 1949. He wrote his first poetry aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer escort in the South Pacific. After a two-year period at the University of California, Berkeley, Ammons became an executive of a New Jersey glass-making firm. In 1964, he took a teaching position at Cornell University as a Goldwin Smith Professor of Poetry and taught there until his death in 2001. His first book of poetry
