Extractions: In the course of a few decades, Borges presented Argentina with a new and different way of relating to literature. He completely reorganized the system, placing at one end of it the residual gauchesque tradition and at the other end the fictionalization of the theory of the intertext, years before it was disseminated by books of literary criticism. Borges is a 'commonplace' for Argentine readers and writers, and his influence can be seen in a sort of lingua franca, a literary koine, in which the twists of his stories are mixed up with anecdotes that he himself mischievously invented for the mass media and repeated in hundreds of interviews from the 1960s onwards. It is easier today in Argentina to show that the question of Argentine literature is central to his work, now that the forces of narrow cultural nationalism, which denounced Borges in the 1940s and 1950s, have become weakened, perhaps terminally. In short, there is no writer in Argentine literature more Argentine than Borges. In his work this national cultural tone is not expressed in the representation of things, but rather in his exploration of how great literature can be written in a culturally marginal nation. Borges's work always deals with this issue, one of the most important questions for a relatively young nation, without strong cultural traditions, located in the extreme south of the former Spanish dominions of Latin America; the extreme south, too, of the most culturally impoverished Viceroyalty of Spain-one which had no great Precolumbian indigenous cultures of its own. Guides One of the more notable collections in the Special Collections Department at the University of Virginia Library is that of works by and about the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), a distinguished poet and essayist and one of the finest writers of short stories in world letters. It contains more than two thousand individual items in virtually all formats, spanning Borges' career of sixty-five years. The collection's depth is unsurpassed, and many items it contains are quite rare. During his lifetime, Borges became renowned as a creative artist whose works affected modern literature far beyond the borders of his native land. Despite the critical acclaim Borges enjoyed, however, his books have been uncommonly difficult to acquire, particularly titles from his first decade of active literary production. Some early works survive in only a scant handful of extant copies, the author having recovered and deliberately destroyed many more. The University of Virginia Library owns copies of all these early pieces. One of the recently-acquired items in the Borges Collection is a nine-page manuscript acquired in 1996

Man, the imperfect librarian, may be the product of chance or of malevolent demiurgi; the universe, with its elegant endowment of shelves, of enigmatical volumes, of inexhaustible stairways for the traveler and latrines for the seated librarian, can only be the work of a god. To perceive the distance between the divine and the human, it is enough to compare these crude wavering symbols which my fallible hand scrawls on the cover of a book, with the organic letters inside: punctual, delicate, perfectly black, inimitably symmetrical.

As his pieces grew increasingly more complex, he turned to classical music, and in 1954, he was granted a scholarship to study music in Paris under the legendary Nadia Boulanger. There, he realized that his destiny was not to abandon tango, but to infuse it with classical and jazz influences. During the latter half of his career he virtually resurrected and reinvigorated the tango, creating a series of emotionally complex works, experimental tango operas, and song cycles that looked back to the mythic Buenos Aires of his literary favorite, Jorge Luis Borges. Although much of his work was at first quite controversial in Argentina, today the music of Piazzolla has a world-wide following, and has attracted the attention and support of such artists as Gidon Kremer, the Kronos Quartet, and Yo-Yo Ma.
