Fa un parell d’anys que comentàrem els tres primers àlbums, uns lliuraments plens de fúria rhythm and blues, potència beat, molta ràbia punk i flamarades de pop contagiós amb aires cínics, misàntrops i antifeixistes. Tres discos excel.lents ("My Aim Is True", "This Year’s Model" i "Armed Forces") que, al costat del següent disc quedaven petits ja que "Get Happy!!" (Riviera, 1980) és el millor de la seva primera època. Hom ha dit que "Get Happy!!" va nèixer del desig de fer oblidar el lamentable incident succeït als EUA durant la gira de presentació d’"Armed Forces", quan bastant carregat d’alcohol l’emprengué contra els músics negres utilitzant expressions racistes. Davant Bonnie Bramlett i Stephen Stills, Costello digué que Ray Charles era un "negre cec i ignorant"; s’endugué un bon cop de puny.

Ha actuat amb gent de la més diversa procedència: Count Basie, The Chieftains, Roger McGuinn... Ha escrit per a la Filharmònica de Londres, per a cinema i televisio. Ha composat amb The Brodsky Quartet, Bill Frisell i Paul McCartney. Ha cantat amb Tony Bennet, Roy Orbison i Chet Baker. I sempre ho ha fet a través de cançons breus i directes, amb un total domini dels registres (des del més vital al més melancòlic), creant textos convulsius i d'enigmàtica imatgeria. Actualment, sens dubte, Costello és el més complet compositor de música pop. "My Aim Is True" (Stiff, 1977). A la portada, amb una mirada maliciosa i les cames tortes, sembla el fantasma entramaliat de Buddy Holly. L'elapé coincidia amb l'esclat del punk però, lluny d'això, les seves cançons havien d'enterrar el moviment. Enregistrat casualment amb el grup californià Clover, posseeix un potent so sense polir. Tretze peces breus ( algunes no arriben ni als dos minuts) interpretades amb fúria de rhythm and blues, potència beat i molta ràbia punk. Els textos, plens de subtils travallengües, versen sobre les misèries de les relacions personals i de la societat que els acull, fent un especial apartat a les frustracions sexuals. "Waiting For The End" té versos dylanians ("L'autoestopista llegendari diu que sap on hi ha l'assumpte..."); "Miracle Man" és una de les primeres reivindicacions blanques del reggae. "Mistery Dance", rock and roll clàssic amb "riffs" de Chuck Berry i uns textos sobre els primers desenganys sexuals de l'adolescència. "Less Than Zero", al.legat antiracista contra el nazi Oswald Mosley. "Alison", el segon senzill, una de les millors balades de la dècada. Flamarades de pop contagiós a càrrec d'un Costello cínic i misantrop, perfectament produït per Nick Lowe.
