As a young lady her talent was more towards the world of opera but a throat operation caused her singing career to take a different direction. She started performing on radio around 1930 and her first break came when bandleader Rudy Valee heard her singing on a Tampa radio station. He offered her a guest spot on his radio show. She then gained real prominence performing I'm In The Mood For Love in the 1935 movie Every Night At Eight starring Alice Fay and George Raft.

    Extractions: a publicity photo from the movie "Hollywood Hotel" Her discography (only 78 rpms) Hear her sing Long Ago and Far Away Frances Langford, born as Frances Newbern Langford on April 4, 1914 in Lakeland, Fla. (according to some surces in 1913) began singing in vaudeville in the late 1920s. In 1931 she was spotted while singing on Tampa Radio by Rudy Vallee and got a guest spot on his radio program. He helped her starting a career in New York, that included a small part in the unsucessfull Broadway Musical "Here Goes the Bride", that opened on November 3, 1931, and closed about a week later. She continued to sing in vaudeville, had more radio and club appearances and made her first records. Since 1934 she had radio contracts for the "Colgate House Party", "Richard Himber" and "Plough's Musical Courier".

    Extractions: I n 1941 she started appearing regularly on the Bob Hope show and when he began to entertain the troops during World War II she joined him on his tours. The tours began stateside but soon expanded to Great Britain followed by Africa and then Italy. In 1944 she toured the Pacific Theater with Hope and in February 1944 on Guadalcanal she met "Westy" Westbrook. While celebrity fighter flights were forbidden, Westbrook managed to fit this tiny (5 foot) lady into the rear of the cockpit of his P-38 Lightning and took her for a ride. A photo she signed for him can be seen on the Westy page . She devoted a great deal of her time to entertaining the troops and was very popular everywhere she went. In February of 1944 while touring the Pacific theater with Bob Hope's USO show Frances Langford met up with Bob Westbrook and joined him for a ride in his P-38 Lightning. Patty Thomas, a dancer with the show, was a passenger in Leo Dusard's P-38. As they flew in formation the ladies waved to each other. The fighter's then proceeded to strafe a derelict Japanese ship that was beached nearby. Patty Thomas, who has remained close friends with Frances Langford since the War is the young lady to the far left of the picture below.
