Extractions: Stringfield was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the first of three siblings. Her family briefly relocated to Albuquerque before settling in Spring, Texas (near Houston). In high school, she divided her time between running track and running lines in drama class until a teacher convinced her to focus her energy on an upcoming musical. "I was really wild back then, and theater just allowed me to sing, dance, jump and run around the stage playing all kinds of characters," says the actress. "It was like playtime. You were creating something, and there was a result that other people could enjoy." Stringfield attended the Acting Conservatory of the State University of New York at Purchase and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. A few weeks later, she was working in a theater box office in New York when she was asked to audition for the daytime drama "The Guiding Light." This led to a three-year stint as the nefarious Blake (her character eventually ran away with her mother's boyfriend). She left the series to travel but soon was called back to Los Angeles to co-star in the first season of "NYPD Blue" as Laura Kelly, the Manhattan attorney and estranged wife of John Kelly (series star David Caruso).

Pre-Order "Ghost Ship" - $22.56 This pretty, light-haired performer first came to the attention of daytime TV soap opera viewers as the nefarious Blake Lindsey on "Guiding Light" (CBS, from 1989 to 1992), a character who eventually ran off with her mother's boyfriend. Sherry Stringfield next showed up on the ABC drama "NYPD Blue" playing the Manhattan D.A. and ex-wife of officer John Kelly (David Caruso) during the first season (1993-94) of the series. In the much ballyhooed NBC medical drama "ER", Stringfield spent slightly more than two seasons (1994-96) playing Dr. Susan Lewis, a dedicated emergency room physician, something of a problem solver who managed to remain cool and in control under the intense pressure of life-and-death situations in an inner-city hospital. Stringfield began acting in high school and later picked up a BFA in acting from the Acting Conservatory of SUNY at Purchase before moving to New York City. A few weeks after graduation, she was working in a theater box office when she was called in to audition for the role on "Guiding Light" which launched her career. In between tapings, she was able to make appearances in several Off-Broadway and Broadway productions. After leaving "ER", she taught acting at SUNY Purchase and was virtually unrecognizable in the small role of Steve Rubell's accountant in "54" (1998). The following year, she made a much ballyhooed return to NBC in the TV-movie "Border Line", which was executive produced by her former "ER" co-star Anthony Edwards. In a somewhat surprising move, Stringfield reprised her role of Dr. Susan Lewis on "ER" beginning in fall 2001.

Extractions: Sherry Stringfield races down the fake hospital corridor shouting out orders and looking very much the part of the cool headed medical resident she plays on ER. In real life, however, Stringfield is a cut-up with an infectious laugh and a bubbly personality that charms just about everyone. To prepare for this latest role, Stringfield had to spend time in a real E.R. which she found fascinating, but certainly not her cup of tea."My character is not a surgeon, thank God," she remarks with a chuckle. "I would fall apart if I had to sit and watch someone being cut open to prepare for the role. All Stringfield, who plays Dr. Susan Lewis, had to do was learn to make fake sutures, which suited her just fine, and remember her lines, of course, which she says is a breeze. "The lines are the last thing I have to worry about," says Stringfield, who was a straight-A student in high school back in Spring, Texas."You have to be focused. When we film those scenes, we go through several rooms at once, without the camera stopping. You can't mess up. If you do, everyone wants to kill you." If she looks familiar, it's because the incredibly-talented Stringfield, at only 27, has had a charmed career as an actress. After graduating from the Acting Conservatory of the State University of New York at Purchase in 1989, one of the top drama colleges in the U.S., Stringfield went to New York City. Within days, a mind-boggling 30 agents asked her to sign with them. Within a week, she had signed a three-year contract to appear on "The Guiding Light" (she played nasty Blake Thorpe, who character eventually ran away with her mother's boyfriend). Soon after that, Stringfield auditioned for

Extractions: When Sherry Stringfield exited her role as ER "The first thing in this business is you can't take anything personally," Stringfield says. " ER ER fame. So they put some serious restrictions on me [doing other projects]. "My attitude then was, 'Fine, I'm leaving to not work. That's the whole point.' What am I, an idiot? If I wanted to work, I'd stay on the number-one show. So it didn't really bother me." But that's all water under the bridge now, says the Texan beauty: "[The producers] saw I was true to my word and everything's fine." Indeed, perhaps the best thing about returning to ER is that fans will finally stop asking Stringfield why she left. "They said I was crazy," she groans. "Oh yeah, [it was] really annoying. People who work on Wall Street change jobs twice a year! Being an actress, I didn't exactly see what the big deal is. But I understand it can appear to be a very coveted position. I think people thought, 'Gosh, was there something really bad about [the job]?' I came to understand that they didn't have a full understanding of an actor's life. It's very rare to have a job that lasts more than a year or two. Very rare Even so, Stringfield admits she's "so bummed" about the impending departures of castmates
