Extractions: Sir John Tavener (b. 1944) Seeking the Hidden Face John Tavener was born in the North London suburb of Wembley Park on January 28, 1944. Musical from an early age, he went to Highgate School with the intention of becoming a concert pianist. Tavener's fellow pupils included, amongst others, the composer John Rutter, the pianist Francis Steiner, and Nicholas Snowman, who was later to found the London Sinfonietta, and it was in such an environment that he began to compose seriously. The pieces he wrote during the Highgate years such as Credo and Duo Concertante (both 1961) helped win him a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1962. Three Holy Sonnets of John Donne (1964) brought the young Tavener into contact with his hero, Stravinsky, who, on taking one look at the score, simply wrote the words 'I know' on the first page. Tavener continued his studies under first Lennox Berkley and then David Lumsdaine, and in 1964 wrote his first opera, The Cappemakers , a setting of the stories of Lazarus and the woman taken in adultery from the York Cycle of mystery plays. It was the premiere of The Whale , in January 1968, which made Tavener's reputation. The first performance was given by the newly formed London Sinfonietta under David Atherton. The piece, a cantata for soloists, chorus, tape and 'men with loud hailers', was enthusiastically received, with Tavener being hailed as the boy wonder of British music. Tavener's music at this time was much influenced by Serialism and collage, and was often deliberately iconoclastic.

Born in North London in 1944, he attended the Royal Academy of Music following a music-filled upbringing, and in the late 1960s, he premiered "The Whale" and had it released on the Beatles new Apple Records label. Tavener is largely at odds with the popular contemporary views of classical music. In part one of his interview, he explains why he is not a big fan of Beethoven or Mozart and why most classical music sounds contrived to him. Tavener makes the case for an approach to music he calls more "primordial" and "traditional." While Tavener's reputation has been growing over the last 30 years, one recent event catapulted him to international prominence. We'll hear a piece of Tavener's that was sung to close the funeral of Princess Diana, the "Song for Athene" (ah-THEE-nee). Martin Neary conducts the Westminster Abbey Choir. A fellow student in Peter Sander's composition class at the City Literary Academy in Holborn had been taught by Tavener at Trinity, and when I decided to try and get into a conservatoire it was one of the obvious places to apply. However there was no reason why I should have been allocated to Tavener, and no reason why he should have chosen to accept me. Acceptance wasn't by any means automatic. John admitted later that if he didn't like a student or their music, he'd refuse to see them. A boy in the year above me repeatedly made the hour's journey from Trinity in central London to Wembley Park for his lesson, only to find his teacher apparently not at home. In fact Tavener loathed this student and was waiting for him to lose heart and go away. In the end the student was transferred to another teacher. The College never took this up with John, perhaps because he was one of only a few luminaries on their staff. You could hardly fail to find his appearance and manner striking. When I started at Trinity at the end of 1984 John was about forty, but seemed much older. He'd had a minor stroke not long previously, and walked slowly and stiffly. Almost invariably dressed in loose white clothes, as if a small part of Greece had come to Wembley, he wore his thinning sun-bleached hair long. I never worked out how much of his florid complexion was attributable to sun-worship and how much to high blood pressure. Tavener spoke slowly, in an old-fashioned patrician drawl.

The 70-minute piece, entitled Lamentations and Praises , will feature the 12 male voices of Chanticleer and nine instrumentalists: string quintet, alto flute, bass trombone and percussion (Byzantine bells, Tibetan bowl, tam tam and timpani). The text for Lamentations and Praises is taken from the Orthodox service of the Burial of Our Lord on Holy Friday, and is translated by the composer. Chanticleer will offer the world premiere of Lamentations and Praises in San Francisco in March 2002. The work is co-commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their concert series and by the Boston Handel and Haydn Society, who will join Chanticleer at that time in presenting the debut series of performances.

Since that time Tavener has continued to show an originality of concept and an intensely personal idiom making his a voice quite distinct from those of his contemporaries. His growing interest in the Russian Orthodox Church, which he joined in 1977, marked a significant change in his style of composition. Increasingly, his influences looked back to ancient Tradition as he worked towards the creation of an icon in sound. Major works of the 1980s and early 1990s include the ORTHODOX VIGIL SERVICE and the AKATHIST OF THANKSGIVING, which was given a standing ovation in Westminster Abbey at its premiere in 1988. The Virgin Classics recording of THE PROTECTING VEIL for solo cello and strings with Steven Isserlis was awarded a Gramophone Award in 1992. Large-scale choral and orchestral works include RESURRECTION and an opera for the 1992 Aldeburgh Festival, MARY OF EGYPT which was recorded by Collins Classics. Combined with his reflective spirit, John Tavener has an engaging humour which is never far from the surface. This is captured in both Glimpses of Paradise (1992), a documentary by director Geoffrey Haydon and The South Bank Show, broadcast on ITV on Easter Day 1998 and subsequently released on video.

He proceeded to the Royal Academy of Music where he won several prizes for composition. Among his teachers were Sir Lennox Berkeley and the Australian composer David Lumsdaine. In 1965 his dramatic cantata The Whale, given in the debut concert of the London Sinfonietta, brought him to the attention of the London musical public. The first recordings of his work were issued by Apple, the label made famous by the Beatles. Over the years, the contemplative side of John Tavener's nature has led him in more spiritual directions and his commitment to the Russian Orthodox Church, which he joined in 1977, is now evident in all his work. Recent major works include The Akathist of Thanksgiving (1988), The Protecting Veil (1989) for solo cello and strings, a large-scale choral and orchestral work, Resurrection (1990) and an opera, Mary of Egypt, written for the 1992 Aldeburgh Festival. Tavener's 50th birthday year in 1994 was marked by commissions for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's centenary celebrations (Theophany), the 1994 Proms (The Apocalypse), the Monteverdi Choir's 30th anniversary (The World is Burning), and a work for violist Yuri Bashmet and the London Symphony Chorus (The Myrrh-Bearer). In 1995, new works have included Let's Begin Again (1994), jointly commisioned by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Festival d'Art Sacré, Paris, Greenwich Festival, London and Perth Festival, Australia; Svyatuiee (1995) for Steven Isserlis and the Kiev Chamber Choir at the Cricklade Festival; Innocence (1994), written to commemorate the victims of World War II, and premiered in October by the Westminster Abbey Choir. Arc of Light and Agraphon (1994) for soprano Patricia Rozario and string orchestra were commissioned to form the centrepiece of a Tavener Festival in Athens, November 1995. Tavener was the subject of a 1992 BBC documentary entitled "Glimpses of Paradise" which was also screened at the BBC's Tavener Festival in January 1994. Geoffrey Haydon's book 'Glimpses of Paradise' was published by Gollancz in the autumn 1995.

The slightly perplexed looks on the faces of the performers reflected the feeling many people have on first hearing of a new style taking root in the classical music world.
