5-0 out of 5 stars Never has there been such a manual for success!
This is a system, simple, and direct! Gary Keller has gone to the core of real estate and what it takes to succeed. This book can be used as a step-by-step guide to making any amount of money you wish! His use of real life millionaire agents is inspiring, invigorating, and fascinating. This is a must read for real estate agents and non-agents alike. A job well done goes out to the brilliant authors of this work!

5-0 out of 5 stars IF IT IS TO BE WHY NOT ME? Or even YOU
This book has changed my way of thinking. Gary Keller and Dave Jenks do a remarkable job of mapping out the path to netting over a million dollars. I am currently reading this book for the second time and I plan on reading it ten more times. Our team has made some serious changes after reading this book and we are seeing the benefits and how easy it can be accomplished. Remember we are all in the Lead Generating Business. I wish you all the success after you follow the MILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE AGENT Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made My First Year In Real Estate a Huge Success!
I found this book on Amazon when I was just starting out in Real Estate. I read many of the how-to books because I wanted and needed to hit the ground running in my new career. This book, by far, was the most information-packed and practical guide to starting a real estate business. (By the way, another excellent book is "How to Become a Power Agent in Real Estate" by Darryl Davis).

I am an attorney and before starting my real estate career, I had my own law practice; and before that, I had my own computer consulting company-both successful ventures. I approached real estate from a businessperson's perspective and this book difinitely speaks to the serious businessperson. There are so many books and articles telling new agents where to spend their time and money that by the time the agent figures out what works and what doesn't, they have spent their entire budget and an entire year, and have not made enough money to move on. That's why 70% of new agents drop out of the field by the end of their second year.

This book helps agents, new and seasoned, stay focused on the bottom line. Moreover, it answered the most important question for me--If I need to generate $80,000 in income per year (salary, not gross commissions), what activities do I need to do and how much will it cost me?

So many of the other books and articles claimed to have the winning formula by telling you that you must knock on 50 doors per week and make 50 cold calls per week to generate business. Their theory is that it must be painful if you are to be successful.

This book, however, gives you lists of ideas and says if you do "x" number of activities from this list, you can expect to receive "x" number of transactions per year. YOU get to pick which activities you perform (if you don't like knocking on doors, pick another activity--it does not have to be painful for you to be successful).

The other books tell you that you must know a lot of people--friends and family--and that you MUST call and hound them in order to get business. This book, alternatively, says that if you do not know a lot of people (if you are new to an area) or if you don't want to call your friends and family and beg for business, you don't have to. It gives you the formulas so that you can determine how much marketing you have to do with the "people I haven't met yet" group to generate the same results as you would have with your "friends and family" group.

Using this book as a business modeling guide, I closed just under $3 million in volume in my first year; and just over $7 million my second year. I already broke through the $6 million volume cap that many seasoned agents hit as a glass ceiling and cannot move beyond. My broker with my first real estate company (Long & Foster) was hostile to my business model because she didn't understand it and because I was taking control of my own career. She wanted me to follow her formula and she wanted me completely dependent on her for my success (even though she never provided me with leads).

Then Keller Williams came to Maryland! (Gary Keller, the author, founded Keller Williams to empower real estate agents to run their own successful businesses). I joined Keller Williams and now I am surrounded by agents and brokers who realize that the business is mine and that the broker's role is to support my success. They do not believe, like so many other companies, that the agent's role is to make the broker rich. This is obvious by the fact that they offer one of the highest commission splits in the industry, without charging a monthly "desk fee," and they share the profits with their agents! And their entire culture is based on the "Millionaire Real Estate Agent" business models.

If you are serious about approaching real estate as a business, you must read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely priceless film guide
I received a copy of "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" for my birthday, and it was truly an inspired gift. I love foreign films, and recently went on a film noir bender. I have a list of favourite directors, and I make a point of trying to seek out films I've heard of--even if they're not available as rentals. I buy an annual video film guide faithfully every year, but I still have this sneaking suspicion that there are many great films out there that I'm missing. The book, "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" proved my suspicions to be correct--I have missed many great titles.

This book is a marvelous resource for film lovers. The editor states that it's "a book that seeks not just to inform and to prescribe, but to motivate." The contributors began selecting films by taking "a close look at a number of existing 'greatest,' 'top,' 'favorite,' and 'best' film lists and prioritizing titles based on the frequency with which they occurred." At the front of the book, films are indexed by genre. In the 'meat' of the book, the films are in chronological order (beginning with 1902 and ending in 2002). Film information includes: country of origin, language, director, producer, screenplay, director of photography, main stars, Hollywood awards, and international awards. Each film entry includes a plot synopsis, and gorgeous photographs complement the text. Contributors include professors of Film Studies, journalists, writers, filmmakers, and doctoral students. There's a wide range of expertise here, and it truly shows. And for those who want to search by title, there's a complete title index at end.

I am really impressed by the range of the selections here--including--classics, foreign, documentaries, comedies, horrors, and musicals. While I was happy to see I'd watched many of the titles here, I was shocked at the number of films I've never heard of. Believe me, I'm going to remedy that. I heartily recommend this book to all film lovers who--like me--are sick and tired of going to the video rental place and renting the same old rotten mush. Film lovers--this book is for you--displacedhuman

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source book for movie fans
One of the first lessons about movies is that excellence doesn't necessarily mean box office success and vice versa. When I first saw this I thought it would be simply be a listing of those films, mostly Hollywood, that are too big to ignore. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to see it includes a lot of lesser known films that generally go under the label of "art house" and thus get ignored except at film festivals. The fact that several different people contributed the essays on each film no doubt helped in that. Yes, like other reviewers, there are several omitted films that I would have included, and some that have been included that I would have omitted. Maybe a list of the next 1001 most worthy films at the back of the book would have been a good solution. The choice of stills accompanying the entries (not all entries are illustrated) is pretty good and they are well reproduced. The book is a full one; it has one of the thickest spines on a book I have ever seen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Before you die books
Add this to your roster of great reads and even more importantly, see the movies before you die. If you love movies, this book describes 1001 of the best films from around the world, with black and white and color photos. All my favorites were mentioned and there are about 500 more I need to see. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Primary Source Guide
Excellent book of primary sources. The author did not intend to put whole documents in this book. If you feel like you need the whole document, most of these can be found on the web.

1-0 out of 5 stars Failed Attempt at a Good Idea
This book has one redeeming quality: the volume contains many unusual and telling 'pieces' descriptive of American history.
However, the volume is flawed in two fatal and fundamental ways. 1) There is no bibliography, thus the reader has no way to determine where the editors located their material. For example, the first piece in the volume ("How the World was Made") is simply attributed to 'The Cherokee Nation'. 2) The editing of the material is suspect at best. The Rev. Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" has been redacted from its original fifty pargraphs to a mere 18 without wxplanation. Don't buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Will, a Historian of some type.
This is a credible source, don't get me wrong, however history, in the form of documents, quotations, etc., can be very misleading. While, I'm certain, the editor selected the articles and quotes with some discretion, you need to stay objective and remind yourself that quotes alone are not always representative of a sinle person or time. Use this book, but read Howard Zinn's A Peoples History of the United States first, to get a good foundation of American History. History has always been told from a biased viewpoint from persons capable of being heard (Usually because of a higher position in a social-economic/political system). Use your mind to discriminate information from propaghanda. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a good bottle of wine
Reading this book is like finally getting a good bottle of aged wine after drinking years of fruit punch. From the descriptions of the seedy offshore planners who sell Cook Islands trusts to people whether they need it or not, to the domestic seminar promoters who line up shills to encourage attendees to buy cheapie family limited partnership kits, this book gives a candid look into how asset protection is sometimes shamelessly promoted. Having revealed the dirt under the rug, the book then goes on to address asset protection as a field of risk management and gives the best treatment of fraudulent transfer and bankruptcy preference rules that I have ever read. Just about all the popular asset protection strategies are reviewed, from Nevada bearer share entities to complex litigation expense policies, with the major strengths and weaknesses of each pointed out. The book spends quite a bit of time discussing both foreign and domestic asset protection trusts and their potential flaws (if I were a creditor attempting to penetrate such a structure, this would be the first resource that I would turn to), such that it is a wonderment that those structures are even used at all. Overall, the writing style is good, with just enough technical background on key points to let serious researchers know where to start, without it being overwhelming for the average business reader. Kudos to Jay and Chris. This book is well-researched and provides a level of thoughtfulness and depth of content that has been sadly absent from all the other books considering the topic of asset protection. Big thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Layperson Perspective
Pretty good book. The book counters a lot of hype by promoters of "bulletproof" asset protection plans, which do not exist apparently. All plans can fail no matter how elegant.
Moderately complex for a layman to read. Some material over the head of most laypersons. Most material practical. Some abstract theory of not much interest to clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only asset protection book you need
I am an attorney and real estate investor and am concerned about asset protection issues. This is the only book I've read that discusses both the plusses and minuses of various known techniques and also gives excellent big picture advice. Every other book has advocated specific cookie cutter techniques and left me wondering "would this really work if...?" This book tells you why those techniques do not work. Forget about that trust in the Cook Islands, by the way, unless you are willing to flee the country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed information for IDS systems and Snort in particular
If you want to know about Snort 2.1, one of the best open source intrusion detections systems available, then "Snort 2.1 Intrusion Detection, Second Edition" is the book you will want to have. This is an extensive examination of the Snort program and includes Snort 2.1 on CD with the Book.

The authors start with defining what an intrusion detection system is, what it is not, and how placing it in your network at different points achieves different goals. This is followed by an introduction to Snort and a description of its capabilities and functions before getting into the nuts and bolts of installing and configuring it.

One of the more difficult parts of Snort to understand is how to write the rules that determine when an intrusion has occurred. The authors do an excellent job of describing exactly how to write good rules to achieve the results you want. They even include an excellent section on how to deal with all that information you will be collecting.

"Snort 2.1 Intrusion Detection, Second Edition" is highly recommended for anyone who wants a good, useful explanation of how an intrusion detection system should work and how to implement Snort to achieve that result.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best Snort book, but not as good as it should be
Syngress published "Snort 2.0" in Mar 03, and I gave it a four star review in Jul 03. Excerpts from that review appear on the back cover and first page of "Snort 2.1," published only 14 months later. I still think "Snort 2.1" is overall the best Snort book available, but I was disappointed by signs of rushed production and lack of coverage of key Snort features.

The table of contents for "Snort 2.1" is deceiving, as it is almost exactly the same as "Snort 2.0." However, the new book is almost 200 pages larger than its predecessor, with many internal modifications. Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12 and 13 are either completely new or substantially new. Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 are either partial rewrites or have some material added or dropped. Despite all of this work, "Snort 2.1" fails to spend time on key subjects, which I will mention during a chapter-by-chapter examination of the book.

First, I recommend skipping ch 1. Aside from some general IDS advice, it is haphazard and contributes nothing to the core Snort discussion. Ch 2 is a quick overview of Snort capabilities, and should have been the lead chapter. Ch 3 describes Snort installation, but suffers apparently swapped figures (3.1 and 3.2) and a wrong figure (3.5). Ch 3 is still a nice upgrade from its counterpart in "Snort 2.0," which gave hints for deploying Snort on Red Hat Linux 8.0. The new ch 3 covers Linux, OpenBSD, and Windows.

Ch 4, "Inner Workings," is one of the reasons "Snort 2.1" has an advantage over the competition. It's tough to go wrong when Snort's developers describe the tool's operation. Still, signs of rough editing appear on p. 170 and 191, and the "-a cmg" switch should be "-A cmg".

Ch 5 covers rules, and is a big disappointment. For most users, rules are the primary means to customize Snort. Like "Snort 2.0," ch 5 fails to help readers with some of the more important new Snort rule options, like byte_test, byte_jump, distance, and within (available since 2.0.rc1 in Mar 03). Ch 5 implies on p. 145 that running Snort with -v is a good idea, despite every other recommendation in the book that verbose mode is a performance killer. Also, the IP "sec" option mentioned on p. 205 is not "IPSec" -- see RFC 791. Overall, ch 5 spends too much time restating rule information found in Snort's manual, and not enough time on features available even in Snort 2.0.

Ch 6's discussion of preprocessors is a solid chapter, with new material on Snort's flow module, http_inspect, and perfmonitor. The telnet preprocessor section is one of the better examples of a "code walkthrough," where the author shows code while explaining what it does.

Ch 7 is really showing its age. "Snort 2.0" was behind the times when it said "Unified logs are the future of Snort reporting," and "Snort 2.1" makes the same mistake. Barnyard, a means to read unified logs, was available in Sep 01! Ch 7 also misses the boat on XML output, calling it "our favorite and relatively new logging format" on p. 322. The XML plug-in spo_xml wasn't even part of snort-2.0.0, never mind snort-2.1.0. Basic research would have revealed Joe McAlerney's announcement of Silicon Defense's snort-idmef XML plug-in in Jun 01, followed by Sandro Poppi's assumption of the project in Aug 03. A mention of Barnyard's "XML formatting capabilities" appears in ch 7 on p. 322, yet Barnyard does not offer this natively.

I was happy to see Sguil addressed in ch 8, but sad to see Sguil's use of session and full content data not appreciated for its true worth. Ch 9 does a good job describing Oinkmaster and gives sound advice on avoiding the "not any" rule negation problem. Ch 10 covers really old testing tools like Sneeze, whose stateless operation cannot fool stream4's stateful inspection.

Ch 11, explaining Barnyard, is clearly the book's shining moment. This is the reason I read "Snort 2.1": Barnyard's author, Andrew Baker, describes Barnyard's history, the format of unified logs, and how best to use his contribution to Snort. Bravo. Ch 12 was also very good, using case studies to compare three different "active response" choices. Ch 13 was new but not exceptionally helpful.

I would enjoy seeing three improvements in the third edition. First, thoroughly scrub the book for old information. Watch out for people writing about "Cerebus" or http_decode or offerings from Silicon Defense, whose Web site disappeared in early 2004. Second, tell people to read the excellent Snort manual before reading the book. There's no need to address topics well-covered in the manual, like all of the IP- and TCP-based rule options. Third, ditch the existing rules chapter in favor of two new ones, one explaining principles via existing rules, and one showing advanced rule development.

I still recommend buying this book, but you might guide your reading choices by the comments in this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars mighty impressive second edition
I was concerned this book may fall into the "second edition trap" of search and replace 2.0 with 2.1. Upon thorough reading, this is obviously not the case. The authors have thoroughly documented all new/enhanced features of 2.1, but more importantly they again break new ground by by providing unique, creative, and thoroughly useful information on things like writing rules, the intricacises of preprocessors, etc. They don't just teach you how to USE snort, they teach you how to think about using Snort (and other tools) to better defend your network. The chapter on Barnyard in particular was very interesting, and it's obvious from following following the Snort site/list that a lot of the new features were develped in conjunction with the writing of this book. So, this book isn't a re-hash of information, it's the definitive work from the creators. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Are you as tired as I am of books constantly telling you the same oldBrady Bunch, Beaver Cleaver, goody-two-shoes BS about doing your best tounderstand your parents, doing your homework, making curfew, getting a haircut, dropping that hemline, and blah blah blah?" So inquires Jay McGraw, son ofbestselling author Phillip C. McGraw, in the introduction to the younger, hipperversion of his father's LifeStrategies. This funny, straightforward guide helps teens steerrather than drift in life, dealing honestly with topics from peer pressure to TVaddiction with the underlying mantra, "Don't like it? Change it." Divided intothe same 10 "Life Laws" that are in his father's book (from "We teach people howto treat us" to "There is power in forgiveness"), McGraw urges teens to takecontrol of their lives at every turn. That said, he doesn't expect any youngperson to respond to the way his father's book is written, so he translates"People do what works" to "The truth about why you can act so weird" and "Liferewards action" to "What are you waiting for? Get it in gear!" He demands thathis readers ask themselves hard questions about missed opportunities, perceptions, self-sabotage, and personal shortcomings so they can figure outwhat's not working and fix it. Why? So that they can turn dreams intogoals--with specific timelines and strategies. There's no doubt that the bookhas the enthusiastic pounding zeal of an aerobics instructor. But it makes a lotof sense, and if a teen took even a few of these lessons to heart, he or shewould be more in control than most adults. (Ages 13 and older) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I may be way past my teens,
I haven't been a teen for a long time, but I still remember the frustrations and not knowing how to do what I wanted or get what I wanted. I bought this book for my oldest son and I read it in three days. Then I bought a new one for him and one for his best friend. If I had had a book like this when I was a teen it would have made my life so much simpler by showing me what I had, what I could have and how to follow the path I wanted. It's a wonderful book for teens, young adults and reminds us "old folks" how we once struggled to "figure out the rules of the game" I can only urge parents to get give this to their kids and read themselves. Closest thing to a "Life Handbook" available. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written guide for teens who need to "get it"
I saw Jay McGraw on Larry King and was so impressed by his calm yet straightforward manner and convictions that I decided to buy his book. I'm glad I did. using clear language and concrete examples, Mcgraw updates and adapts his father's Life Strategies so that teens can understand them. He also adds some personal real-life examples to show how teens can either drift along in life or forge their own directions.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find that this wasn't just another cookie cutter self-help book. There are questionnaires designed to make teens think, REALLY think, about what matters to them - and why - and how they can go about achieving their goals. It isn't always an easy read but it is a worthwhile one.
As the parent of a teen, I found the short quizzes and question sections very thought-provoking and they even started some good discussions in our household.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Mindset & Thinking Habits
This book was quite excellent. As a thirteen-year-old girl, it sure got me in gear! My twelfth year was spent trying to fit in with the crowd, dismiss good grades, and wear tight clothing. Now, thanks to this book, I have newfound self-esteem, willpower, and goals which I am reaching one by one! My aunt, a huge fan of Dr. Phil, gave it to me for Christmas. I am already a different person. It helps so much with self-esteem issues, peer pressures, goal-setting and other teen dilemmas and issues.

I definitely recommend it to all teenagers who want to get their life in gear! It helps so much, but only if you allow it. This is not the kind of book that you can just skim through. You've got to read it and take action, take it to heart, in order for those Life Strategies to work in your life. I'm telling you, it's so helpful! Thanks Jay!

One last thing, however, I would like to direct to those who thought Jay McGraw was copycatting Dr. Phil's book- NO KIDDING! Where've you been? This book is the same as LIFE STRATEGIES, but it's just been rewritten for teenage understanding. And, also, the rich have their problems, too. Maybe Jay hasn't had to work hard for his popularity or money, but I'm sure it's obviously something he knows a lot about- THINK ABOUT IT! He has DR. PHIL for a father. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Good, Good!
As a recovering addict, this book has great ideas and is right on the mark! I will suggest this to the many people I know dealing with the disease. As with many addicts like myself, I have always had problems in relationships with women too. Another wonderful book that helped me is Stumbling Naked In The Dark: Overcoming Mistakes Men Make With Women. Between the two books there is a lot of great advice that helped make my life better and certainly more bearable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best single source for friends and family of addicted
I've read several books and online materials about substance abuse and how to help someone out of addiction. This book is the most comprehensive, considerate, simple, and useful source for friends or family members. It is more complete and helpful than the better-known cornerstone works from the Betty Ford Clinic and Dr. Vernon Johnson. Not only is the text full of information, but the charts offered at the end to help organize an intervention are most user-friendly and designed to give you a thoughtful helping hand. This one is the best investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've read on this subject
Whether you are a family member, a friend or a professional counsellor, this book is a "must-read" for anyone dealing with alcoholism or drug addiction. It may be painful to read, but it's so true. I am purchasing copies to share with friends. I need their support. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep in The Heart of Textus (Receptus)!
This book, the entire Bible in the original languages, with an interlinear English translation, as well as a marginal literal translation, and Strong's numbering over the original language words, is a welcome addition to the library of any sincere student of God's Word. I think this is the first complete Bible, Hebrew & Aramaic as well as Greek scriptures, in interlinear format with marginal translation.

I love this book for Bible study. I can see what the original language states, and using Strong's system, I can then go to a lexicon and research the meaning of the original word. Like many students of the Bible, I am skeptical of paraphrased and other translations that take liberties with the Biblical text. Green obviously has a deep respect for the Word of God, and doesn't play loose with wording while translating.

While I have heard that Westcott & Hort's Greek text is more accurate than the Textus Receptus that Green used here, I consider that a minor point.

The drawbacks that must be mentioned: The single-volume edition, which I have, is large and unwieldy, with tiny print that can strain the eyes if used extensively. At least the print quality is good - very crisp and clear. There is a 4-volume edition, but it can be rather costly. Eventually I'll probably invest in one, 'though. One point I question: the inclusion of "a few readings" from the Latin Vulgate which the author clearly states are NOT considered as "true scripture", but which are included anyway, with the appendix serving as "corrective" - WHY? I'm of the opinion that if its not true scripture, it doesn't belong in with the inspired canon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any serious bible student, period.
This is a fabulous study tool for any interested person in what the bible really has to say!
The Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible, Jay P. Green Sr., One Volume Edition, displays all the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words of the Bible in the Masoretic Hebrew Text and the Received Greek Text, with literal, accurate English meanings placed directly under each original word in interlineary form, with Strong's Concordance numbers over each original word, enabling the Bible student (whether knowing the original languages or not) to refer to all lexicons and concordances that have also been coded with Strong's numbers.
Bound in a bonded leather over boards hardback edition.

The only complete Interlinear Bible is now fully keyed to Strong's Concordance numbers. The Strong's numbering above each Hebrew and Greek word - along with the Interlinear text and marginal literal English Translation and the 1769 Authorized King James Version - opens a treasure house of Bible study possibilities for those who wish to understand the Scripture better.
It's use will allow the novice student to read the original text without losing valuable time to look up the meaning of the Hebrew & Greek words in the Hebrew & Greek lexicons. There is no substitute for a first hand knowledge of the original text. However since only a small minority of Bible students retain an easy reading comprehension of the original text, the Interlinear Bible is a welcome aid to Bible students, laymen, and pastors who wish to continue working with the original languages.

5-0 out of 5 stars JP Green Does an Excellent Job
Based on the Textus Receptus with great references this interlinear is an excellent addition to any serious Biblical Studies Library. The basis being TR is very important because it gives the sense of scripture from that text.

Some feel that the Revised Version is more accurate and the debate will continue for decades, yet to have this tool for TR/KJV only studies is very informative. Too many will miss out on the importance of this book because it is KJV. However, whether you believe the TR is the correct text or the Revised, this is a must in your library. You can compare to the Strong's numbers, however, remember that Strong's tends to be influenced by Classical Greek definitions and not the koine.

I feel George Ricker Berry's translation is very helpful and it is much less expensive and without the Strongs reference is still a great buy. However, to round out your library, get both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Note from an author
I really enjoyed working on this book and hope you'll enjoy reading it. We've tried to keep each chapter both fun and educational by trying to capture fairly realistically what the attackers do, what they think of the targets (all our IT resources), and even sometimes what the admins should have done to defend better. From an educational perspective, the best thing you can carry away from this book is an attacker's view of your networks. My chapter follows a college kid through a fairly involved hack with a big payoff.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time!
I've read just about every "hacker" and security book worth reading over the past few years, and honestly, most of them really were not worth reading. But, this book is truly unique and is well worth your time to read. The security industry is incredibly complex; technically, socially, and ethically; and this book reflects that. There are many very talented (and WAY TOO MANY not so talented) people on the right, the wrong, and the in between of cyber security. The landscape of the internet changes almost every minute. This book manages to communicate the technical and social intracicies at the same time through a fairly compelling story that also encompasses very challenging, technical information. This really is a must read for anyone involved with the security community.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about REAL hacking
This is an amazing book about hacking. This will open your eyes to the world of hacking in the same way 'Hacking Exposed' did when it first came out. But different than HE, this doesn't jut tell you the how it tells you the why, and accomplishes this through an interesting fictional story. Anyone in the infosec world will recognize the tools and techniques used throughout the book as completely real and accurate. In many cases the authors of the book are the creators of the tools themselves--like the chapter Fyodor wrote which uses Nmap. I enjoy reading security books, but it's become incresingly difficult to find truly unique, original material. This book certainly fits the bill. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Moderately Pleased
R. Meredith Belbin's text, Management Teams: Why the succeed or fail is quite applicable to my studies in small group communication. However, I would not choose to read it again outside of this context. I did not enjoy the writing style or the setup of the book, yet it contained helpful information for the assignment I needed it for. The review on the back cover perfectly describes the intended audience of the text, with a line drawn from PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT that says "It should be read by all who have responsibility and authority for guiding organizations in their selection of management teams." For the purpose of writing a speech with the intended audience being a startup corporation looking to build new management teams, this text was very useful and informative. Beyond this, I did not learn much that I had not already learned, or could have surmised on my own. Without having the time to read the text from cover to cover in order from beginning to end, it was difficult to follow some of the associations drawn to other material. There were a few concepts that I did not fully understand even after reading the information, and chose to leave these things out of my speech, such as the Apollo Syndrome. Given that this text is probably not meant for use in coursework, or at least not so much in the area of communication, it was quite applicable to the study of team communication. The focus of the text is more geared toward management research, which seems to be common-sensical at times, yet I think needs to be put into print to establish general guidelines for all to follow. Overall, I would probably recommend this text to someone completing the same or similar assignment or to someone looking to get ahead in a management team. This is definitely a very directed reading and intended for a very tailored audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Building Collaborative Teams
This extraordinary book was written by Dr. Belbin nearly 20 years ago and remains in a class by itself in providing a useful theory for building and operating effective decision-making teams. Nowhere else will the reader find a set of principles that are so soundly based on direct evaluation of competing teams, explain so much of effective and ineffective team behavior which otherwise confounds explanation, and which is so beautifully and succinctly written.

While Belbin's title suggests this book is simply about business management, the content of the book is of much wider applicability. This book is a valuable, perhaps indispensable, source for anyone involved in collaborative endeavors. The book would be useful if it merely answered the question "Why do collaborative (creative, decision-making) teams succeed or fail?" Belbin goes much further than that. He tells us how to proactively build teams that are predisposed to succeed and, equally importantly, how to adopt strategies that will lead to success on the part of teams not so fortunately constructed.

I have found this book very useful in building, and teaching the building, of software product development teams, and heartily recommend it for that purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Using Belbins team roles
This book is a must for all trainers in the HR arena. It explains the background to Belbins research, it explains the roles in detail and goes on to explain what the roles mean and how to use them to optimise team performance.

The language Belbin uses is friendly and easy to read and so the book is ideal material for trainers and students alike.

A classic book which should be included on every HR Trainers bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Something you'll treasure
As you'd expect in a book like this, it tells the tale from Columbus to Madonna, and tells it well, concisely, entertainingly, without being annoyingly fulsome or reverent. What makes this a treaure, though, are all the surprises--you turn a page and find, actually tucked into a corner or attached by glue, replicas of ancient passports, or hand-written recipes, or coupon books from some old immigrant mutual-aid insurance policy. There's even a St. Lucia prayer card from somebody's funeral and the jury's verdict form from a trial of Al Capone. It brings the history to life in a way beyond mere words. 4-0 out of 5 stars The most dog-eared book I own...
Grandmaster Foonberg is at the top of the law practice "how to" food chain with How to Start and Build a Law Practice. Frankly, I own not the millenium model but the Third Edition (it was a little weak on the technology side), but the lessons taught by the mythical Foonberg are invaluable - foremost among them: "it's better not to do the work and not get paid than to do the work and not get paid." Just too much here to miss, all put together in small vignette-style chapters. Lots of substance. A MUST have for lawyers. Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading...Practical...Great Buy!
As I've already said...this is an easy reading, practical book about starting your own law practice. Foonberg is straight forward in explaining things and includes many samples of his ideas. Great buy for anyone planning on hanging out their own shingle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for starting a new practice
I bought this for a discounted rate from the ABA when I was a Law Student. After reading it, I would have been willing to pay 5 times the actual price (albeit, I would not have ever bought to find out it was worth that much). Far too many times I have bought one of these "How to" books and found it too much BS and not enough substance. Foonberg minimzes the BS and maximizes the substance. My only critique is I would like to get a littl emore information about marketing and getting clients in my doors from day 1. He addresses the issue but a methodology would have been nice. All in all, the book is a tremendous resource. If you are starting a practice/firm, I HIGHLY recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
Wolfson and Pasachoff's "Physics" is a great book, either for a class (in which case you really don't have much choice of which book you buy) or for self-study. I found the book to be a very good way to learn the basics of calculus-based physics, even without much outside instruction. It is clear and self-contained, with enough examples and problems to work on. It covers a broad range of topic in limited depth, making it great for an independent enthusiast or a student, including not only simple mechanics and electormagnetism, but also introductions to thermodynamics, waves and optics, and moden physics and relativity. Also, there are plenty of examples of real-world applications, showing industrial and everyday uses of the content covered and effectivly relating abstract material to real life. All in all an effective text and an interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Textbook
Hey, this book helped me learn physics and get an A+ for the first quarter... but the main thing is what I have learned (not greade, of course) ), and as far as learning goes I found this text to be very helpful. It contains all the most needed equations, lots of examples, the text is easy to read and understand. Even though physics may not be your favourite subject, this book will not add to your suffering. I would recommend the study guide and solutions manual to it if you are the kind of person who does not like to read the chapters but only grasp the most relevant material.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
I found this book to be a wonderful guide to freshmen physics. I have only the second volume on E&M and modern physics. I particularly like the little things such as the reminder that phenomena like reflection and refraction can be explained using Maxwell's equations. I believe that this gives the student a preview of things to come in later classes. Perhaps there are not as many examples as in Halliday & Resnick, but there are plenty of applications to the real world. It gives just a taste of quantum mechanics but that may be enough for freshmen. The color layout is an optical feast. I like the "Got it" sections which periodically test the reader's physical knowledge at the completion of each concept. I do think that the questions should have an answer key though. All in all a great book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Abelson and Sussman's classic Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs teaches readers how to program by employing the tools of abstraction and modularity. The authors' central philosophy is that programming is the task of breaking large problems into small ones. The book spends a great deal of time considering both this decomposition and the process of knitting the smaller pieces back together.

The authors employ this philosophy in their writing technique. The text asks the broad question "What is programming?" Having come to the conclusion that programming consists of procedures and data, the authors set off to explore the related questions of "What is data?" and "What is a procedure?"

The authors build up the simple notion of a procedure to dizzying complexity. The discussion culminates in the description of the code behind the programming language Scheme. The authors finish with examples of how to implement some of the book's concepts on a register machine. Through this journey, the reader not only learns how to program, but also how to think about programming. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misguided intro, but great theory
Frankly, I'm appalled at the elitists comments made by many of the 5-star reviewers. It's that very superior attitude which prevents the comp-sci field from creating more scientists rather than code monkeys and justifies poor pedagogy and technical writing for the sake of "scientific integrity."

SICP is neither masterpiece nor pariah. No other introduction to computer science has a truer grasp of the "soul" of computer science. Not only that, but there is ALOT of useful theory in here, if you have the patience to look.

But, the book suffers for dreadful writing and advocacy of a language that can be really quite a horror for beginning programmers. On one hand, the authors took an approach that should have been brilliantly successful. On the other, they did a terrible job explaining fairly simple ideas (or, rather, ideas that should have been simple.)

But, the truth is SICP has SO MUCH to offer. Unfortunatedly, the book is only as educational as the CS professor who teaches it. It turns out that the Berkeley professor who said that SICP is "the greatest CS book ever written" is the finest CS teacher at Berkeley. Unfortunatedly, most CS professors are not even 1/10th as good as he is and therefore help make SICP a tortorous excursion.

As a EECS major at Berkeley, I've come to realize just how important theory is in the field of CS. And to that end, I think it is as easily critical that theory should be taught with the utmost respect, not only for the field but the students. SICP is a brilliant master, but often a contemptuous teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUMMA CUM LAUDE
"Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs", or SICP for short, introduces the reader to the basic concepts of programming and gives an introduction to the programming language Scheme.

Students are taught that abstraction is the most important idea within computer science, because it is a powerful tool that allows us to manage the complexity of the software systems we construct. In the same volume he or she gets in contact with Scheme, the most beautiful, elegant and powerful language there is.

The book is fun to read. There are lots of examples (easy and complex) and clear diagrams. The ease with which the reader is being introduced to the topics at hand is unrivaled. There really shouldn't be a single computer scientist or programmer running around that hasn't read this great book.
If you ask me for the CS books I'd carry with me to a remote island, I wouldn't hesitate to name SICP first, probably followed by Knuth's "Art of Computer Programming" and the Dragon Book (i.e. "Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools").

The second edition has seen some corrections and vast improvements in the areas of compliance to IEEE 1178:1990 (Standard Scheme) and more interesting examples (e.g. involving image processing).

EXCELLENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pons Asinorum of programming
Barry Mazur (talking about mathematics, not programming) once characterised the encounter with a genuinely new concept in terms of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's experience on reading the first lines of Kalfka's Metamorphosis, when he literally fell off the sofa in shock, thinking 'I didn't know you were allowed to do that'.
I still remember the same shock, even if I didn't literally fall of my chair, when, as an undergraduate, I encountered the first edition of this on the new acquisitions rack in my departmental library: I must have been the first person in the University, in Northern Ireland even, to read it, which I did, from cover to cover, over several days sitting in the library, even before it was released into the stacks.

The reason why Structure and Interpretation is the best there is, is that it manages, not just once, but several times, to deliver that fall-off-a-chair intellectual jolt. People who complain that you can only do such things in Scheme, and therefore that the ideas are pointless, are missing the point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital to Understanding the US Constitution
The Federalist Papers is probably the most seminal discourse on the U.S. Constitution that has ever been written. While there are occasional inconsistencies and undoubtedly many of the founding fathers that took part in the Constitutional Convention and favored adoption of the Constitution would disagree with some of its contents, it is vital reading if one hopes to understand the original intent of the founders.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need to know what is in this book
For those newly awakened to American politics, nothing is more important than the Federalist Papers. The federal government now violates almost every principle of government, and every rationale for its existence, as given by Madison, Hamilton, and Jay. From a government of limited and enumerated powers, celebrated by these Founders, we now have a government that, in the belief of most and the frank admission of many, is a government of unlimited power. They would call this tyranny, and say why. Americans sleep through it, waiting for the check in the mailbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Foundation of an Unique Government
The Federalist Papers are rightly considered one of the most authoritative explanations of the provisions of the Constitution in existence. While much further interpretation and definition of the Constitution has taken place over the past 200+ years through the slow accretion of judicial interpretation, the Federalist remains the source for a contemporary explanation of the political causes and justification for virtually every clause in the Constitution.

Some passages are less thrilling than others but Nos. 10, 39, 48, and 51 are about as good as it gets in terms of explicating the structure of what became the US government.

A must read for political science majors, history majors and selected parts for high school students in every government course. ... Read more
