Product Description
PERENNIALS is Albrizio's third print collection of poetry and marks a break from her use of traditional forms. Her first two books consisted of poems written exclusively in formal verse. Although PERENNIALS includes some her most well-received poems from her first collections, it also consists of more than 30 new poems that are largely written in free verse or in forms of her own creation.. The Greater Hartford Arts Council and the New Boston Fund have honored with excellence several free-verse poems that were later included in the first chapter of this book. ... Read more

Book Description
Eileen Albrizio writes entirely in formal verse. This powerful 90-page collection is deeply emotional, highly charged, sometimes witty, and very, very honest! Combining dark contemporary realities with classic grace, this new book is a necessary edition to every poetry collection! 5-0 out of 5 stars A brave and powerful experience...what poetry should be!
This book is visually appealing and powerfully stimulating on every level.Albrizio's poetry has exposed her soul, and touched mine. Her use of form is exceptional!I had no idea formal verse could be so freeing. It seemsshe uses the photographs, which are scattered throughout the book as poemsas well, bringing out only a moment or a word and making it completelyvisual.

I loved "The Thinning of Filomena", a poem thatportrays a traditional woman who is admired for her great (Italian)cooking, only to starve herself to the point of being hospitalized.Thepoem took me through the kitchen.I smelled the calamari, and tasted thebitter lemon, and was shocked by Filomena's ultimate fate. The poemcombines a difficult rhyme scheme, that is not even noticeable upon thefirst read.It is smooth and never forced.

Another example is"Antidepressants".A poem that combines repetition and rhyme toshow the chronic, cyclical patterns of depression.

And "PrettyGirls", a sarcastic, almost tongue-in-cheek look at our basicinsecurities, and the debilitating role we all play in keeping each otherdown. It, like all of her poetry, grabs hold of the emotions we hidedeepest in our hearts and brings them to surface, all the while, surrounding it with perfect form.

A true work of art.I would recommendit to anyone, young or old!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible depth of emotion and deftness of language
Albrizio's poetry has a wonderfully classic feel.It grabs hold of dark and often overwhelming emotions and clips its wings, and puts it in a cage.

I've read her poems over and over, like I have with all of the greatpoets of the early twentieth century. Poetry that is truly art. This isthe kind of book that should be in every classroom. It is a fine exampleof the proper use of form, while at the same time entertaining and moving.Even the seemingly simple poems, such as Haiku and rondolet aresurprisingly powerful and complex. There is a layer to everything, so Ialways have something different to look forward to when I reread the poem. Each word is carefully picked, without ever feeling forced. It also isextraordinarily visual. The imagery is sharp, and the scatteredphotographs are a compliment.

I can't wait for her next book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
"The energy one discovers in Eileen Albrizio's new collect is restless and dynamic, a shape-shifting power the poet harnesses with panache. For Abrizio clearly understands, at a profound level, the relationship between content and form. To say that Albrizio is versatile understates the case: here one finds work in the sonnet, villanelle, pantoum and kyrielle forms, among others, not to mention meters from the ballad measure to terza rima. Poems driven by memory and by imagination reveal the discerning mind of a writer engaged and mesmerized by the great panoply of the human." — Gray Jacobik ... Read more
