Product Description
A century ago, paranormal investigator Edward Grey fought and destroyed a powerful warlock off the coast of the island of Saint Sebastien. In the early 1980s, the B.P.R.D.'s newest agent was sent to retrieve the warlock's remains. But Abe Sapien is ill prepared for the dark forces that block his way.Written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and featuring the haunting art of Jason Shawn Alexander (Damn Nation, The Secret, The Escapists), Abe Sapien: The Drowning is the story of Hellboy and B.P.R.D. mainstay Abe Sapien's first solo adventure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Coming up for air
Set during the years when Hellboy was AWOL, Abe Sapien sets out to investigate the claims of a haunted fishing village. Enter pirates and buried treasure, zombies, voodoo and witches, large sea creatures and rough seas. The art on offer here is fantastic. Jason Shawn Alexander brings Mignola's script to life with vibrant pictures of doomed pirate vessels from the 18th century, lonely coastlines caught in the last glow of a sunset, and the empty, chilling stare of a soulless creature. Mignola's challenge is to make Abe as capable as Hellboy of handling the supernatural threats without resorting to out and out violence and pulls it off admirably. A pitch perfect and engrossing read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice abe story with incredible art
This book really isn't as good as some of the other 5 stars I've given out, but I absolutely love it.It focuses on one of my favorite characters from Hellboy who I always felt got shortchanged as a sidekick.Even though Mignola stepped down from illustrating this, I feel like the artist did an amazing job and if anything his attempts to include the thick block shadows that make Mignola so notable sometimes overshadow his own style.Still, it comes out beautifully and most pages are simply stunning.

The story in and of itself is similar to a lot of the earlier hellboy stories: epic evil, brief fistfight, final conclusion. This feels a bit more cerebral and lacks a lot of the punchy humor that pops up so much in Hellboy (and makes it so loveable) but I think it's a wonderful reflection of a more serious and thoughtful character. It's also a chance to watch Abe come into his own as an agent, and it does that fairly well.

Overall I think this is an excellent addition to any hellboy collection, and my only wish after buying it is that the print quality was as good as the Library Volumes.Still, the print quality is very good, and the binding feels a bit more solid than some of the early Hellboy TPBs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abe Sapien Review
For anyone who likes the Hellboy or BPRD series, this is a must read.Abe Sapien is one of my favourite characters in the series. So, of course, I had to add this to my collection!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Amazing Art for a wonderful comic!
The story is a five issue arc following Abe Sapien's first solo mission after long being assigned on many cases with Hellboy.

This story is inked by my now favorite comic book artist, Jason Shawn Alexander. His wonderful art style is created by inking straight away with little or no pencils. His art drips, and oozes with an edge, giving a clear sense of emotion, relying heavily on the dark shadowing to convey the images. The art gives a sense of foreboding, exhilaration and excitement. I was completely taken, absorbed in the pages, soaking in the images, and when I was done, I went back to page one. Alexander's art tells the story just as well as Mignola's words, which often are sparse letting just the images tell the story. In the end it is beautiful.

The coloring by Dave Stewart was amazing too, winning the 2009 Eisner Award for Coloring on this run.

Whether you are a Hellboy fanboy/girl, or just want some of the best comic book reading, I definitely recommend you pick up this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never Trust a Priest on Fire - No Matter How Good His Sermon Is.
Abe Sapien, the lexicon of knowledge and the dispatcher of Rasputins the world over, has not always been the way we know him. In 1981 he was, in fact, a field rookie and nobody knew how he would perform. His first mission carried him to a little island called Saint-Sebastian (not to be confused with the one off the coast of Spain), to recover a ritualistic dagger from the body of a warlock named Vrooman because the BPRD thought the dagger could be inherently valuable to them. The thing they didn't count on was the fact that Vrooman had secrets of his own, they the island had a horrid past, and that Abe would be walking into something that would ultimately hit the island like a plague and consume souls like moths in flame.

Personally, I was happy to see a little more Abe out there to look at because I have long wondered what the Ictho-Sapien's past was like. In Drums of the Dead we saw a little piece of what he was, and in the Hellboy Companion it talks about Abe in a bit more detail. Still, Abe is an enigma and enigmas are fun to watch unravel - and especially so when Mike Mignola is doing the frame-by-frame. As the mission comes to a head and Abe finds himself confronted with a few oddities, we see the "thing" from his past and are reminded again of the name he had for a time. This is what I like about Mignola's presence - first, anything that he wants to happen can happen and, secondly, he makes great pieces of literature. Mignola actually said that he never considered himself a great writer because he tells his stories with pieces. If only he could see the thing in the mirror.

One thing I was a little torn by was the guest artwork. I liked Jason Alexander and thought some of his characterizations were quite good, but I did not like the things he did with Abe. When he constructed the body profile, for instance, it looked too gaunt and too - I hate to use this word - normal for my tastes. This happens when you have quests, however, and when you get accustomed to a specific way of doing things. Since Mignola is the mind that brought us Hellboy and the others, it is hard to shake the people he gave life in his way. Still, Alexander did good work and did not disappoint by making things too cartoony or too bland.

Anyone reading along with Hellboy might like this, anyone taking in BPRD will like this, and anyone that is interested in adding on will enjoy it as well. A newcomer's book this may not be - I'm not sure because of the movies and all plus the story is about Abe and maybe you like Abe. I recommend it highly, enjoyed the read, and say "buy it but know it as well." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What's with these Eldritch gods looking alike?
OK. I read this vol of King Conan by Joseph Dysart immediately after the Hand of Nergal volume of Conan by Tim Truman and guess what? The Nergal god is exactly like the Midnight God, all tentacles and stuff. As usual, in the fight scenes, Conan gets wrapped up in these tentacles, lops them off mercilessly until the triffid literally is chopped down. So is this the same story rehashed with a different title?

The problem with the earlier Thomas/Buscema/Matteis runs were that now and then, Conan would meet one of these disproportionate Leviathian demi gods and somehow survives the experience. The mere drawing in of one of these gigantic beings into a comic book panel reduces them to mortal proportions and makes for a predictable episode. The same thing is happening in this volume.

The artwork does not dazzle. in fact, the first few pages are just awful. No way is this slugfest a 5 star.

3-0 out of 5 stars King Conan from Dark Horse
Dark Horse's second foray into Conan's life as king proves much more satifying than their first effort, the Demons of Khitai.
Writer Joshua Dysart writes a surprisingly good Conan tale which is in keeping with the tone of Robert E Howard's original stories; and builds a looming sense of dread throughout the tale, delivering on the supernatural threats which make the best Conan yarns. Zombies, serpent people and ghosts make this one an enjoyable read despite some of the clunkier moments in the set up stage of the book.
The artwork, on the other hand, is something of a dissapointment. The story is let down by some weak pencils from Will Conrad, who took over the art chores from original artist Tone Rodriquez and as a result had to rush to complete the book; and it shows.
Conrad is one of those artists who seems to spend his time on drawing a few key scenes very well, and then rushes through the rest of the pages with a different, more hurried art style. This means characters will be drawn with great detail in some panels; shaded and shadowed and with almost photo referential draftmanship, and then drawn hastily in other panels with facial features or anatomy not quite right.
Conrad's art is saved somewhat by some very nice coloring, but ultimately a stronger inker and more time to complete the pencil work may have saved the day. A shame cover artist Jason Alexander was not tapped to draw the interiors of this book as well as the five covers of the orginal miniseries, as it would have been elevated to the level of classic. Hint, hint, Dark Horse!

5-0 out of 5 stars Frickin Awesome. Great story. Reaches you on many levels.
Classic Conan with a gripping plot. Its all of why Conan is awesome at so many levels, and zero complants with the graphic novel. A Must Must read. Great story, great content, great art. Fricknin Awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars CLUMSY BUT DECENT STORYLINE
I will tell you straight up that I was never all that fond of Marvel's King Conan comic series. I found the whole idea of Conan being "tied down" in a palace with a wife and kids and dealing with affairs of state to be completely opposite to the spirit of the adventurous spirit of the character. It's also worth noting that Conan creator Robert E. Howard's only tale of Conan as king was the novel "Hour of the Dragon" which takes place just after he usurped the throne of Aquilonia yet prior to his marriage to Zenobia. In fact this novel features his meeting of Zenobia as the slave girl helps free Conan from imprisonment. I simply preferred the stories of Conan as an adventurer, traveling wherever the winds of fortune took him.

Conan and the Midnight God collects the five issue series from Dark Horse and tells a tale of Conan as yet a new king. By this time he is married although he does not have any children as of yet but Zenobia is pregnant although Conan seems distant towards her, a mild plotline that is never truly resolved. News has reached Aquilonia and the other southern kingdoms such as Koth and Shem of trouble brewing in dark Stygia (more trouble than usual, I suppose). Conan receives and emissary from Stygia who has come to squash rumors of the genocide taking place in his land although Conan sees it as mere frailty and dismisses Ambassador Ra-Sidh. That night, Zenobia falls ill and her child is still-born. An Enraged Conan blames Stygian sorcery and summons forth his army to track Ra-Sidh across neighboring lands and into Stygia itself. Bent on revenge, he throws diplomacy out the window although the Aquilonian army proves to be so formidable that the King of Shem assists Conan by providing ships to cross the River Styx.

Conan takes a handful of his best men to undertake a covert mission into Stygia to find the sorcerer Ra-Sidh but finds a land of horrors awaits him, with an evil far more ancient than even the oldest known Gods of the Hyborian world.

Howard was a friend and frequently corresponded with H.P. Lovecraft and the pair often shared ideas with Howard infusing a number of his stories with Lovecraftian monsters and concepts. Writer Joshua Dysart does the same with this story as Ra-Sidh is serving a deity akin to Lovecraft's Elder Gods who built a nightmare realm populated with the pre-cataclysmic serpent people. I enjoyed the basic plot although I found it a bit clumsily handled and improbable. I do not see Conan as being reckless enough to leave his kingdom, and risk open was with neighboring lands all to track down a lone Stygian sorcerer. This was the same mistake made in the similarly themed Conan and the Demons of Khitai written by Paul Lee. Conan is painted as impetuous and easily baited in both of these stories...perhaps possible in Conan's youth but not so much when he had grown into a wise King, now in his forties.

Will Conrad's art isn't on a part with Cary Nord's who's established himself as the best Conan artist since John Buscema but his dark and moody style is a good fit with this particular story.

5-0 out of 5 stars King Conan Lives!
This Graphic has all the makings of an excellent Conan story. It takes place in the period of Conan's Kingship (He is in his 40's).It is drawn and written in a very grim and dark Howardian style.I won't ruin theplot. The story takes place in Tarantia in the beginning and end, but the bulk of the story takes place in Stygia. This is a must for any Conan fan. It's also a great introduction to the character if you are new to Howard's creation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An adaptation of the original story that children can understand
The original adventures of Alice are much more difficult to read than most people realize. Carroll wrote very figuratively and while people tend to believe that it was a tale for children, it really is not. So much of the book relates to complex adult situations that children simply cannot relate to.
This book is an attempt to change that, by adapting the original story into one more suited for children. In that sense, the target was acquired and hit, the level of the text has been modified so that it is now at the level where children can understand it. I recommend this as the book about Alice's magic adventures that you read to your children, rather than the original version.

This is a very good book with some fantastic art.The story is well played out & the characters are very interesting. The old myths of vampires & werewolves take a different route in this story & it is a fresh and good take on the old myths. My only gripe is that it's a bit too short.I'm really looking forward to the next book and so will you after you read this.
